4-0 out of 5 stars Really good reading
I haven't had so much fun in a long time. I wanted to go up and down the river with this one. I found it interesting and challenging too.Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to run rivers
Having navigated only a few rivers, none of them virgin, my interest was piqued when a former boss of mine told me about this guy Richard Bangs she knows. So I ... read the reviews, ...Suffice it to say I sat down with the book in hand, looked up roughly three hours later, and noticed I finished the book. The last book I recall which captivated me so was Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground.4-0 out of 5 stars Lost River
Richard Bangs and his Sobek rafting company were clearly the early trend setters in world-wide adventure travel. Those who enjoyed other books by Bangs includingRiver Gods and Riding the Dragon's Back will enjoy this first-hand account of Bangs's early development as a world-class rafter including his teen adventures on the Potomac, his first summer working on the Colorado as a swamper and finally a guide through the Grand, and his first major first descent of the Omo River in Ethiopia. It was the Omo trip, which cost the members a total of $1400, where Sobek beat a well-financed National Geographic expedition by three months to what was then billed as the Mt. Everest of Whitewater, a distinction many now bestow on the Tsangpo in Tibet.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE of the guides that works for the Grand Canyon
This guide seems to have excited a lot of controversy. And I can understand why. John Annerino's guide to the Grand Canyon is just as individualistic as all his other books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Infomative
John Annerino gives his readers an abundance of information about the trails and geology of the Grand Canyon. My husband and I especially like the compact size of the book - great for tossing in a daypack while hiking the canyon.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best-ever Grand Canyon hiking guide!
I hike rim to rim to rim several times a year in the Grand Canyon, so I know the inner corridor trails pretty well. This book should now be considered the definitive guide for hiking in the Grand Canyon and the strong points of this book are worth noting. The maps are excellent, as are the descriptions of how to get to trail head. However, the book is incomplete in certain areas and outdated. The Grand Canyon has implemented a shuttle system to stem the horrific crowds (I don't see much improvement) and hikers now can't drive to the South Kaibab trail or Hermit's Rest trail. The directions in this book are therefore rendered confusing due to the new restrictions.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable but needs updated edition
John Hart is the real deal, and anyone hiking the Great Basin needs this book. His mileages are accurate and so are his descriptions of routes. The only criticism I offer is that the book is a bit dated--for example, there is an easy-to-follow use trail to Morey Peak instead of the XC route description JH offers. Also worth noting is that JH must have a very low-slung vehicle.Driving a garden-variety SUV (1996 Jeep Cherokee) I have never had any trouble on any of the roads he describes. 5-0 out of 5 stars good things come in small packages!
This is a book that packs a lot of worthy information into a small book that is easy to backpack. You will need detailed topo maps as those in the book are for overview only, but the hikes are exquisitely detailed andaccurate. Many of the trips are in the less well-known areas of Nevada and Eastern California and will please those who like to hike withoutmeeting anyone else. The author encourages readers to find alternative routes to destinations and, although most of the trips are to peaks, thereare some easier canyon hikes.Longer trips definitely need experienceandroute-finding abilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Southwest Deserts Come Alive
We camped for a week in the Davis Mountains in west Texas in a section of the Chihuahuan desert last summer. This was not our first desert experience - we have hiked and camped across much of the Southwest over thelast twenty years or so. This was an unplanned trip as we were headedtoward southern Colorado, but we became fascinated by the Chihuahuan desertand somehow we never drove any further.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Walking Europe (Sierra Club Adventure Travel Guides)
I have travelled part of the route described by this book.I found the information in the book very useful in planning our trip and in providing local information which made our travels on this route more enjoyable. The book itself is a good read for anyone who is interested in European travel even if not comtemplating undertaking this specific trip.We are now planning a second stage of this trip and are using this book as a significant reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is exact and detailed so that one can follow GR 5
In 1991, four of us, aged 50 - 70, flew to Amsterdam, and from there, in three months, walked the trail as described by the ladies. The detail in which they describe each place they visited, made us feel comfortable when otherwise we may have been apprehensive at the newness of this adventure. They detail places to eat, food to try, little bits of information one might easily overlook all of which enhanced our trip.We have recommened this comprehensive guide to several of our friends. This book will take you by the hand, across Europe, and leave you with a memory for the rest of your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why hasn't this been reviewed?
I can't believe no one has reviewed this very excellent book on "The Middle Atlantic Coast". I've read and reread and learned so much about the area I've lived most of my life. Perhaps it's the title "Natualist's Guide". Before I read this book I wanted to be (a Naturalist) and upon finishing it I found I was on my way. The Sierra Club guidebooks are extremely informative and this one in particular is a great buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete, strong example in this category
Benedict draws from countless sources and personal experience in this book to assemble the most complete handheld book on the Southern Rockies. If you live in Colorado and consider yourself a naturalist, this should already be on your shelf, and in your backpack as you trek around. I use mine so much I had to tape the cover to protect it. The writing is crisp and factual, yet engrossing. Coverage is complete: from geology to ornithology, botany to meteorology, it's all here in ample detail for the interested lay person. Highly recommended... one of the best in class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful series of guides
There are no more beautifully written or pictured guides to the national parks than this series put out by the Sierra Club. For a historical, geological, and biological snapshot of a park, no book does it better. If you need very specific information, contacting the park is your best bet. There is some information about trails, camping, contact info, etc.The main purpose of the book, however, is to give you an understanding about all aspects of the park. These books are truly treasured in our home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome pictures and great history!
This is a wonderful book that introduces through color photography and historical references many of the national parks in the pacific northwest and Alaska. While a little outdated to be considered a true travel guide - it is great for reference and a wonderful guide for those who only can travel to these majestic and mystical places through pictures. ...
