Editorial Review

Captain James Cook's three epic 18th-century explorations of the PacificOcean were the last of their kind, literally completing the map of the world.Yet despite his monumental discoveries, principally in the South Pacific, Cookthe man has remained an enigma. In retracing key legs of the circumnavigator'sjourney, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz chronicles the culturaland environmental havoc wrought by the captain's opening of the unspoiledPacific to the West, as well as the alternately indifferent and passionatereactions Cook's name evokes during the writer's journeys through Polynesia,Australia, the Aleutians, and the explorer's native England. Horwitz skillfullyweaves a biography and travel narrative with warm humor that is natural and human-scale, and his restless inquisitiveness quickly infects the reader. Whilestriking dichotomies abound throughout that journey--Maori toughs who adopt Naziimagery to symbolize their own fight against white domination, millennia-oldPolynesian sexual mores that would shame the Reeperbahn, a sense thatChristianity decimated native cultures at least as effectively as Westernvenereal diseases did--few are more poignant than the ones that abound in Cook'sown life. This fine work is an adventurous reminder that answers to historicalriddles are elusive at best--and seldom as compelling as the myriad newquestions they pose. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining (3-1/2 stars)
This account of Captain James Cook's three voyages is juxtaposed with accounts of what the author encountered two and a half centuries later at venues on Cook's itinerary. The reader switches between Cook's history (upbringing, family, strengths, faults, patrons) and the author's humorous travel impressions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great laid back, meandering read
Though the prose wanders a bit in places, one of the most entertaining travelogues I have read.Best read on a beach somewhere in the Pacific. The style is easygoing, but the author gets his point across.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an easy-going but comprehensive chronicle of Cook's journeys?
During a round-the-world trip, I travelled to Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Bora Bora and Easter Island. I came across lots of places visited by Captain Cook or otherwise connected with him, as well as plenty of monuments with snippets of information about his journeys. I was interested to learn more, but at the same time wanted to avoid academic histories. This book was recommended by my guidebook, and it was perfect. Tony Horwitz combines a chronicle of Cook's journeys in the Pacific with his own experiences of modern-day travel in some of the same regions. It's light-hearted and entertaining, as well as being interesting and informative. It's travel literature, not a literary classic, but it's perfect if you're after an easy-going but comprehensive description of Cook's journeys. Definitely recommended.

Easy to get Lost in this Gripping Narrative....
4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Account
This fascinating book tells two stories, of two men who lost their way on separate journeys into the north woods. Its structure is engaging: it tells the two stories side by side in alternating chapters. It details their peril, their survival efforts, and the search and rescue operations.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
My title says it all, but it bears repeating: I really did love this book. It's interesting, well written, and utterly riveting.I am a sleep-deprived mom to a toddler and a baby, but this book kept me up at night reading well past the hour when I should have been asleep.I read about this book in my alumni magazine (like the author, I am a graduate of the U of MN).When I read that the book chronicles not just one man lost in the wilderness, but two, each in different years and circumstances, I wondered how the author would manage to tell both stories without confusing the reader. He does it masterfully. The stories of the two men are woven seamlessly together, in alternating chapters, and the structure adds beautifully to the suspense. This is a terrific book.I highly recommend that you buy it right now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history on an underreported topic
I love reading history and fancy myself to be quite well read on a variety of historical topics, however I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that much of what I read in this book was completely new to me.
3-0 out of 5 stars All illustrations and some maps omitted
Buy the 1967 softcover edition (isbn 0140019332) instead, it has photographs of quite a few of the characters in the text. The stories revealed in the pages of this book are some of the most fascinating I have ever read, just another example that truth overgoes fiction. The tale is five stars. My 1967 edition had become really tattered so I decided to renew it with this edition. I was very disappointed to discover that all the photographs and engravings of the earlier edition, of Kitchener, King Kabarega, Lord Gordon and his Khartoum palace, Emin Pasha and quite a few more, aren't included here. Gone. I think these original photographs really added a dimension to the story and I lament their passing. Several maps in the earlier book didn't make it either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but interesting
This is one of those books that's hard to evaluate, because of the fact that it was written almost 50 years ago, by an Englishman (though he grew up in Australia) and he exhibits the characteristics of someone of that era. Moorehead was a product of his time, and so his prose with regards to various Africans is not surprisingly condescending and arrogant, at times. On the other hand, he also repeatedly expresses sympathy for them (at least in abstract) and discusses their plight, positioned between Arabs and more distant Europeans, with considerable sensitivity. This makes the book a mass of contradictions for the modern reader: on the one hand you're somewhat revolted by the racism of the author, and on the other hand, he's not racist at all.

I bought this guidebook a few years ago and it is definitely one of the best.It fits easily in our seatback. He covers many trails. What has been helpful about his book, is that the mileage is given in both directions, so you can easily figure out where you are given your starting point. All the cross roads you come across are described as well, so you don't wonder, should I have gone that way.His mileage was right on with our odometer.I have a few other guide books, but his is definitely the best because of the detailed description of your road trip.Highly recommend. With his book and a Trails Illustrated map, no reason for you to get lost. ... This book was amazing and inspiring.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, So Sad
I just finished this book.I read the whole thing in 24 hours. It is definitely a hard book to put down, I just kept wanting to know what happened next (even though I knew of Audrey's fate before I started the book). It makes you think of your own life and relationships. I truly feel for Pipin and can't imagine losing a love like the one he and Audrey had together.I don't think he would have ever put her in harm's way intentionally. At the end, you wish it was a book of fiction.I recommend this book to anyone, it is a fascinating sport.I want to read more from Pipin and see the James Cameron film, if it is still coming out?

4-0 out of 5 stars She knew the risks
My first thought on finishing this book was addressed to Pipin--"You killed her!". I do feel that his obsession with the sport and attaining new records abused the trust of his less experienced wife and pushed her into a dive she may not have been prepared for. However, VeganGurl makes a good point that Audrey was herself quite aware of the safety precautions (or lack thereof) being taken on the dive and was free to pull out or insist on changes at any time. She was by all accounts an intelligent young woman and not a helpless puppet to her husband's ambitions. If there is any blame to be assigned for this tragic event, she must take her share. I can't imagine undertaking something so dangerous without checking and doublechecking my equipment *myself*, but then I've never been very "team"-oriented. Having said that, I found this a compelling read. Pipin is clearly a man of deep emotion and seems to have benefited from self-examination and soul-searching over the last few years. No, it's not literary, but it tells Pipin and Audrey's story simply, in Pipin's own words. Whatever one thinks of the circumstances around the fatal accident, or of the sport itself, one can't help but feel deep sorrow for everyone involved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great details a great guided how to guide
Cycling accross country is something I plan on doing some day. This book gives you a detailed route on where to go. The authors are alot older thenI am which gives me hope of doing this in the next couple of years. Over all the book has great information, equal to anything you can find on the web. Which is one of the reasons I bought it. The only comment I would have would be to add even more editorials and personal ramblings on the things they saw and did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for cross-country bikers & armchair travelers.
Lue and Shannon Christian's road trip adventure, published as Cycling Across North America: A Leisurely Route From Coast To Coast, begins in Fresno, California and picks up Route 66 to Illinois, and then travelsthrough Indian and Michigan, then on into Canada, finally finishes up inQuebec City. The Christians averaged 53 miles a day, totaling over 3700miles in all, and with very little climbing. But it is much more than justa pleasant travelogue adventure, it also services as a superlative planningguide for others seeking their own sense of wonder in a cross-country tripby bicycle. By following their established routes, fellow travelers canenjoy the sights and pleasures the Christians found when they made theirthree month journey. Cycling Across North America is valued and pleasurablereading for armchair travelers, and a "must" for anyone seeking asuccessful and memorable cross-country bike trip of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration to follow in path
At age 36, I would love to be able to do a ride such as this, but would never have the time to plan it.But, now I have the dream of one day doing this ride with the help and inspiration of the Christian's guide.Hopefully, I won't have to wait 'til my spouse is 60...maybe we can takeour passel of kids and see America sooner than that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You mean it is in your backpack?
It's portable reference for everything backpacking. I can't imagine heading out into the wilderness without it. It covers everything from first-aid to a few sample recipies. The only thing I would change is an unexplicable change between the last edition and this one. Before the front and back covers were laminated which gave the book more survivability in your backpack. Since they bill it as a portable reference I'm at a loss to explain why it now has a standard cover. Obviously that has nothing to do with the info inside the book and that is, as I mentioned, invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Manga Series Out There!
This is my all time favorite series - even though it's only Shonen Ai it is the greatest Manga Series out there. The art is great and the story is funny and sweet in a lot of places, especially when it reveals how much the two main characters care for one another. It focuses on Dee Laytner and his persistence to get into the pants of his new partner Ryo Maclean, your average uke not knowing what to make of Dee's advances and Dee isn't the only one after Ryo, their new boss Berkley Rose is and Dee has his own admirers including one hyperactive jealous JJ, who hates Ryo. This is a must have series for any Yaoi or Shonen Ai Fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book...great art
The first time I read this manga was way back when in highschool when my Japanese language teacher gave us manga for us to practice reading with.It was actually in Japanese and it really got me hooked on Japanese manga, especially the Shounen Ai genre. It wasn't really smart for her to bring in some yaoi manga books, but hey, it was awesome. Though the translation really varies...and Tokyopop has a reputation for screwing up some mangas. All in all, the second book is awesome. There's mystery, action, adventure (...). The characters aren't that bad looking either. Sanami Matoh's art is awesome, though her child characters look mighty freaky with weird glass like eyes. There's a lot of humor and Sanami Matoh portrayed NY people perfectly! Although in the second book it goes on to the supernatural realm...ghosts and such, Matoh-san didn't overdo it. I strongly urge any Shounen Ai manga fans to buy this book. It's one of the most popular shounen Ai mangas out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy
Dear god, I love this series! It looks like Sanami Matoh refined her drawing style between the first and second books. A big improvement, if you ask me. The only thing I tend to not like about this volume is that it tended to get riciculous at times, but that's more than made up for by great kissing scenes. ;DRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unpredictable portals.
I've rarely studied anything this much. Is the brilliance found here simply due to painfully severe and possibly intentionally misleading editing? The apparent chaos rewards persistent analysis from both sides of the brain, and the discarding of even one panel risks a world of confusion (I don't believe that one needs to have seen the anime to understand the space babe Haruko's motives or how they ultimately fail). Is this a new genre of mystery? For those into it, what a sustained treat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Chaos
For anyone unfamiliar to the FLCL anime, after flipping through the first few pages of this book you'd most likely end up slamming it back down on the display rack and grab some of the more beautifully animated manga, like Naruta, InuYasha, or an Ani-Manga of some sort. But for fans of FLCL, the chaos of art that hits you from start to finish will make you smile, as it is very reminiscent of the anime in some ways. The FLCL anime had chaotic storytelling and action, while the manga has chaotic art. Both, however, are beautifully made.
5-0 out of 5 stars Manga Gives Ungiven Info not Provided by Anime!
Okay, so this is an essential for any Fooly Kooly fan of any age. A crap-load of background information on Characters is given, though still using a quirky, humerous plot to describe it all. The art is OUTSTANDING! It follows in the quirky, 90's rock feel that was displayed through the Anime. Though it may be confusing at some times, anyone who has watched the Anime should already expect that. This is one of the only must-buy Manga's I have ever encountered, and is a must buy for any fan of Takkun and the rest of the gang. ... Read more

I would like to leave a few words about 'Worlds to Explore.'This is an excellent book for those who love to travel or at least would like to.It gives a great insight into not only the way isolated areas were a hundred years ago, but also how challenging it was to get there. Each short excerpt is taken directly from a long past article of National Geographic, and is perfect length for children of about eight years and older, giving a small taste of a place and it's people without going on about it so long as to be boring. An excellent starting point for further reading on cultures they may find interesting.Later, you may also want to buy a copy of the original issue to read the entire article; even copies from the early 1900s are easy to find on Ebay.I did just that with an article from 1925.My only complaint is that there are few pictures, but primitive cultures usually wore very little clothing, so maybe less pictures is a good thing for younger readers.I would like to see more publications from National Geographic in this style, but would have rathered even more to see this book broken down into several seperate books, one specifically for each continent, and with many more pictures and illustrations. That being said, even if they put out further editions in the same style, I will continue to buy them.If you are buying this as a gift for a child, I would also recommend a tent, a coleman lantern, and a subscription to National Geographic; I have a feeling they will be wanting all three in short order.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gathering of first-person travel and adventure stories drawn from the first half of the 20th century
WORLDS TO EXPLORE: CLASSIC TALES OF TRAVEL & ADVENTURE FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC provides a gathering of first-person travel and adventure stories drawn from the first half of the 20th century from the pages of National Geographic: while lacking the color photos of the magazines, it still comes with 60 black and white photos and some of the best 'you are there' stories you'll find under one cover. Dramatic, true stories of encounters around the world capture the wonder of experiences of naturalists, anthropologists and adventurers alike, presenting works by a range of travelers. The result reads with all the drama and flair of fiction, but it's all true fact - and impossible to put down.

Editorial Review

In this lively book, an American expatriate tries to make a new home in a small Italian city famous for its clannish ways. He succeeds in many ways, but not without plenty of gaffes and cultural misinterpretations--all of which make Michael Rips's memoir that much funnier.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nose for Humor by Uriel Dana
"The kind of book you want to read out loud to someone.... even the stranger sitting next to you!"Uriel Dana
5-0 out of 5 stars The place is for real...
Having read and greatly enjoyed this story, I later found myself at Sutri enroute from Rome to Tuscany. My wife and I stopped to stretch our legs and see the town.It is as described, and so are the people. When Michael's name and/or book were mentioned, most people rolled their eyes (lovingly). This book made a visit to Sutri infinitely more enjoyable, and made it a special place among places on the Via Cassia (SS2).

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Stories: Disjointed, Sometimes Funny, Meandering
Read the rave reviews and then read the book yourself. Pasquale's Nose is a big disappointment and not tied together well, chapter to chapter.Michael Rips flits from subject to subject, character to character without developing anything enough to make you care and there is a rich seam of stories about the residents and history of Sutri to be told here. The book is unsatisfying and unfinished and attempts to be philisophical at the end with a discussion of Adam and Eve and the question "Where Are You?".Even so, I am glad I read the book because it opened up the village of Sutri, Italy -- and surrounding area -- for my further investigation. It whetted my appetite.I'll give Paquale's Nose that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers... don't miss this boat!
Any reader who loves a good book will relish the vicarious experience of traveling with Twain, his wife, Livy, and Clara, one of their three daughters as they tour the world on the lecture circuit. It's important to understand the necessity of the trip: Twain was 60, facing bankruptcy, and signed on for the lecture tour in order to pay off his debt. The grueling schedule and unpredictable travel accommodations take no toll on his writing, however. Prepare to laugh - hard and often. Was it hot in India? "I believe that in India 'cold weather' is merely a conventional phrase and has come into use through the necessity of having some way to distinguish between weather which will melt a brass door-knob and weather which will only make it mushy." Teachers - do not pass on the opportunity to laugh and learn and share the world with your students. Geography, history, culture, language, climate, language arts (oh, his choice of words and phrases!), politics, time zones, botany, geology, biology, religion - all are explored and described and relevant today. Jimmy Buffett's "Remittance Man," "That's What Living is to Me," and "Take Another Road" all spring from this book (especially the remittance man, a character you'll meet early in the book). There is also an "unfinished story" with which you can challenge your students. I worked with nineteen 4th and 5th grade gifted students one summer, and they spent two weeks reading, scripting, and animating a 70 minute video of this book. They loved it, and so will your students if you plan accordingly. A good accompanying video is "On the Trail of Mark Twain" with Peter Ustinov, but only as a companion - NOT as a replacement! Go for it... where else will you get the opportunity to travel from Vancouver to Hawaii to Fiji to Australia to New Zealand to Ceylon to India to South Africa? The book chronicles their travels in such a way that you can pick it up and focus on one region without losing anything. But don't let that stop you from reading the whole book. See the Southern Cross and the Blue Mountains. Get rousted out of your comfortable train berth to change cars in Australia because the gauge of the tracks changes from wide to narrow. Meet the dingo and the Aboriginals, eavesdrop on Twain's conversation with "Satan" and "God" in India, explore the diamond mines of South Africa near the Trappist Monastery, and steer clear of the sharks in the Great Barrier Reef. There is more adventure in this one book than a whole year's subscription to National Geographic. My favorite part? Twain's vivid description of "that bird of birds - the Indian crow." No, wait, it's the hand-car ride down the Himalayas. No, wait... ah, who can pick? Read it yourself, and find out why.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timely Shipping; not as "new" as I wanted
It got to me fast but wasn't in as "new" condition as I expected - i.e., it may not have been read before but it had a good bit of shelf wear.A nice book all the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
The only thing I would add to the other positive reviews is that the book is just riddled with political and social commentary -wonderfully scathing, far ahead of its time, and subtely presented at that.Jingoism is derided, missionary zeal seen from the perspective of the injured convert, colonialism unmasked, feminism promoted ....other ills rought by the west are put in perspective as well through good storytelling and Twain's trademark humor.A great travel tale, but also a work of wicked and broad-reaching social commentary backed up by solid history and first-hand accounts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times
Safari: A Chronicle Of Adventure details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times. Bull is an environmentalist, so his survey Safari isn't your typical gun-hunter's celebration of good old days, but a survey of conflicts between hunting and conservation, weapons and transport, game control and more. From economics and financers of the safari to mishaps, adventures, and famous personalities involved in safaris, vintage black and white photos pair with wide-ranging personal and political stories for maximum effect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull
A wonderful book covering the beginnings of the African Safari to the present. Many current authors use this book as reference for their own books such as Peter Beard, Bibi Jordan, Kuki Gallman, and Mirella Ricciardi. If all of these authors use this book as a reference and quote it throughout their own books it has just got be good. I recommend it highly for any African Safari book collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kelsey's Guide to off the Beaten Path
Sure Kelsey has an ego thing about himself being in all his photos, and the hiking times are off by 50% (Add that 50%, however, no one else has come close to offering a guide to such remote places.I've used it to find indian ruins, weird in-the- middle-of-nowhere canyons, etc. Most of his info is quite accurate.People who can't find something through his descriptions probably would become lost looking for anything. Most places he mentions you'll never find another soul at...that's the best part.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sir, modern computers actually make creating an index fairly simple.
I once read that, "Indexes are among those necessary but never spectacular products of hard as well as skilled work that can sometimes make the difference between a book and good book."
5-0 out of 5 stars this book is not for beginners
For all of those people giving this book one and two stars either you need to come more prepared or the desert is no place for you.I have been on many hikes in this book and his other books and the only time I had a problem is when I forgot a map or tried to find a trailhead in the dark.Yes he gives you enough rope to hang yourself but there is nowhere else you will find this much info on these remote incredible places. If you can't negotiate these canyons maybe you should go on a ranger guided tour at your local national park. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Not Gripping
I must agree witht he reviewer who commented about the book being written by committee. The narrative is choppy and lacking not only key details, but also historical background. Because it's an autobiography, I don't necessarily think that it's fair to damn the book for being self-centered; it IS about him. I do feel, however, that the book needs better editing and a bit more self-examination.
