Classroom guide
Trail Mix is a great teaching tool. A group of middle- schoolers read the stories, discussed, then shared their thoughts and views in group discussions. The book is accessible, enjoyable and offers life lessons from different perspectives. The students were able to empathize and relate to the young people who shared their stories. Themes of courage, perseverence, and a love of the outdoors make for a good read. The author is to be commended. I highly recommend it, not only for the life lessons, but as a ready example of journalism students can understand.

Courage!Hand it on!
When I picked up this book, I intended to read a story at a time, but instead,kept reading on and on until I had finished the whole book, anxious to learn how each child had handled their own crsis. This is a great book to have available in schools, hospitals, and other organizations, so that those with problems in their lives might read and be encouraged by these young people, who were courageous enough to tell their story and how they dealt with their situation. Read it and give it to an organization that can help others achieve their goal to overcome.

A source of inspiration for young people.
As I read the book I was drawn in and it was as if I were right there next to them as they told there stories. The author did a great job of pulling the reader into the "wildernes" with detailed descriptions. I am certainly no book critic by profession but believe that it is a wonderful book and the stories are uplifting and offer courage to others children and adults a like. He was known as Hornby of the North, the Brit who rejected his wealthybackground for the frontier life of Canada's frozen north. In 1926, Jack Hornby,the living legend, took his young cousin, Edgar Christian, and Harold Adlard tothe remotest part of the Barren Lands, accessible only by canoe and dog team.Except he didn't bring dogs, nor enough clothing or supplies. Instead, he stakedtheir lives on the fifty-fifty chance of meeting with the great cariboumigration. In his diary, the young Edgar wrote, "We live on our rifles and seenobody." Two years later, the diary would be found stashed in the stove near theskeletons of the three men. Endurance and failure
In 1926, the Barren Lands of the Canadian Northwest Territories were rightly regarded as an inhospitable region of appalling weather coupled with the threat of starvation, accident, and loneliness, a place where men (meaning Europeans) would be tested to the limit.Jack Hornsby, a troubled veteran of WWI, drifter, and adventurer, had been there, and liked it.He put together an expedition with Harold Adler and Edgar Christian, two young and inexperienced friends, with the intention of wintering north of the Great Slave Lake.They would hunt and trap to support themselves and pay for the expedition, and Hornsby would collect scientific data.Hornsby was knowledgeable about the region, but apparently was unable to organize effectively and failed to make basic preparations despite warnings.After many hardships and colossal mistakes in judgment, all three died.Mounties found their bodies, letters to parents, and the detailed diary kept by Christian, two years later.The author has used the diary and a number of surviving letters to reconstruct the adventurers' trip in great detail.Counterpoint to stories of survival under harsh conditions, but rather depressing.An absorbing read for anyone interested in arctic exploration, and a thought-provoking sidelight on Canadian history

Good thriller, but hard to believe
I don't know very much about bears or bear behavior, but fortunately I do have enough common sense (and it doesn't take much) to realize this guy is fudging on his "true story of survival."It was still a good suspense book though.

this book is not only ficticious; it's very bad fiction
First of all, the narrative is clumsy, but that can be excused in this sort of book. The larger problem is that the story is entirely unbelievable. My advice to Mr. Fletcher would be to do a little research before his next attempt to portray the figments of his imagination as non-fiction.Anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of bear behavior and biology will quickly recognize that this story is completely inplausible. My personal favorite was the account of the bear charging forward on its hind legs, "running as any man would do."I will not pass judgement on whether the climbing account is true, but if it is, I would invite Mr. Fletcher to kindly confine his adventures to Europe.American wilderness has no need of hikers who take delight in toppling rock formations and prying crystals from caves.If you must read this book, do yourself a favor and check it out from the local library.

Gripping, but real?
I've been to Alaska a number of times, dropped off, almost everytime, just me and one other person, in the absolute wilderness. So the tale was gripping. I've always been fascinated by these big bears, coupled with a huge dose of respect.

A compendium of practical for women and those who hike
Walking In The Mountains: A Woman's Guide by Edith Rogovin Frankel is a very practical hiking guide written especially for women seeking to camp or travel about in a mountain wilderness area. Addressing particular topics such as getting in shape for the mountains; hiking while pregnant; what to carry in a backpack; terrain types suitable for children, and more, Walking In The Mountains is very highly recommended for female hikers as a compendium of practical for women and those who hike along with them regardless of age or gender.

Indispensible
The perfect read before you set out and also a great size to tuck into your backpack for refreshers.Very clear and readable prose with enticing illustrations.
