Its ok but i would not recomend it
This book was ok but I would not recomend it.Bradford Angeir is not that great of a writer, so there are many parts that are hard to understand.But if you have time on your hands and want to know about the baics of wilderness survival it is preaty good.

Good Book
I have never had to use any of the information contained in this book in a susrvival situation but as a kid I did use the information about trapping and snares to catch rabbits in Alaska as a kid (I'm using the third printing 1966 version.)I also built snow shelters to play in.Everything I tried from this book worked.

Tips for Survival
You are stranded in the woods, alone and scared. Bradford Angier's "How to Stay Alive in the Woods: A Complete Guide to Food, Shelter and Self-Preservation Anywhere" very well may save your life. Throughout the book, Angier gives important information which is also quite interesting. He covers main topics which are the focal point if each chapter. Most ideas and tactics are generally understandable, although the illustrations are downright ridiculous at times. The moments that leave you thinking "that was a brilliant idea" are often interrupted with common sense tips that make you wonder what age group the book is intended for. Detailed explanations of practical knowledge draw attention from several parts of the book, which results in numerous low points. In conclusion, this book makes for a decent read, but lacks the qualities which would make it a book that you would like to own. ... Read more

Food for thought

Powerful and moving, with a happy ending!
I went to listen to a book reading by Amy, and was so impressed by her cheerfullness, her poise, and her caring, empathetic nature.
Angels in the Wilderness touched my heart!
Having recently had a friend fall victim to a debilitating hiking accident, this book caught my attention.Reading the first chapter immediately reeled me into the author's personal experience of suffering a bone shattering fall, all alone, in a beautiful backcountry wilderness she adored.Her description of the pain, lonliness, desperation and ensuing triumph held me in a spell.I intended to just glance through the pages to see if the book would be inspirational to my friend, and instead I stayed up all night to finish the book.

Excellent quick guide to wilderness medicine
This is an easy to read nuts and bolts manual for wilderness medicine. Pictures and step by step instructions are easy to follow. The book is small and can pack easily and lightly.

Great book; classic info
Anyone who enjoyed the boy scout handbook would love this book.It's full of all the diagrams and how-to's I enjoyed as a kid.This one's for grown kids and covers dwellings of every type - temporary to permanent, small to large.Great drawings; I'mso glad I found this book.

a must for your survivalist collection
Well written, easy to read, and full of details and pictures. Presented in a clear and concise manner this book will take you naked into the wilderness and give you the basics of survival structures but build you up to a full understanding of large permenant structures. a pleasure to read, recommend to everyone of all age groups.

For "boys" of all ages
When I was a child, I would look for this book when I went to the public library. I checked it out frequently and marveled at the lined drawings of various kinds of wilderness dwellings, especially the "Boys Hogan"-a type of hidden shelter built into the side of a hill.No doubt this book became the inspiration of the "forts" we built in the woods and the lean-tos constructed in Boy Scouts. Survival With Style
Excellent source of information. As a survival instructor, I recommend it to all my classes.

Excellent resource!
Mr. Angier presents fascinating and practical information on the very basics of survival-shelter, water, food and warmth.Conventional travellers would do well to carry the few items that he recommends-just incase.Hunters hikers and campers have a bible in this book.I have testedhis methods of starting a fire, and finding potable water-He's right ontarget.Adventure writers will find this book an excellent resource-toobad it's out of print! I was hoping to find an updated version.Mine waspublished in 1974!

This is the best book that I have ever read on survival.It tells eveything from how to build lean to's to log cabins to igloos.Also it tells how to build traps to catch animals and fish which is a must if lost in the woods.As well it tells every way imaginable to navigate and tell what your long and lat. are.It tells plants that youcan and cannot eat, how to clean your water, how to make bread, bows and arrows, bolas, survival strategies for the weather, and much much more.I would reconmen this book to any one who loves camping hunting hiking or any one who is interested in these sort of things ... Unique and inspiring
This book can be useful to people of any religion.As a Christian, I was not offended, although I agree that the author definitely does not share my spiritual beliefs.We can all benefit from connecting to nature and developing a greater level of understanding/awareness/respect of the beauty that surrounds us... especially as children.Do not pass by this wonderful book because of a religious bias.Remove the wheat from the chaff, absorb the good information and ignore the rest.

Not for Christians
You'll probably love the book if you are not an evangelical or charasmatic Christian. For those of us that are conservative Christians, however, it's too bad that Brown just can't help but include such gems as "peace, love, joy and a higher purpose...can only be found within ourselves" (They're a gift of the Holy Spirit and absolutely cannot be found within ourselves.) and "Refer frequently to water as earth mother's blood." ("Earth mother" is a diety worshipped by various cults.) That's just two that I found right now. When we first opened this book, it seemed there was something on every other page that was in contradiction to the Bible. Basically, Brown worships the creation rather than the Creator.

Wilderness Search and Rescue: A Complete Handbook
Agreed that some of the information is a bit outdated, however, having said that, it's nothing terribly major.PACKED full of alot of information.This book covers a wide array of Search and Rescue issues which are related through stories and re-told accounts of various rescue situations encountered by the author and others.Overall, a great reference book worth reading.Not something you're going to keep in your pack and haul around the hills though.

Still a winner
This is a somewhat dated, but still excellent text for wilderness SAR training. Setnicka did an excellent job that has survived well over the years, with only a few techniques and technologies requiringupdating.Read more

I read the book in preparation for a mountaineering course - it's great - informative, well written, a good balance of solid content and easy readability. He would be a great person to go up a mountain with - but the book is a little easier to fit in the backpack!Read more

Return to the summit of Scouting
I throughly enjoyed author Bill Cass' stories about his Philmont experiences. His tales are well crafted and help the reader relive the fun and adventure of the Philmont Scout Ranch. An arrogant, pompus show off

Worth it 15 years ago
I purchased this book in hardback... over 15 years ago. At the time, I was very interested in outdoor survival. Of the 15 to 30 books I read on the subject, this one was the most clear and practical. It addressed many facets of the wilderness survival with out a lot of jargon. The author focuses mainly on low tech solutions to survival situations, but gives some suggestions of more technology-based solutions as well. An example would be including Chapstick in a survival kit for its morale value and low cost in weight. It covers the basics of survival in any environment and then branches out to specific details for each environment. It covers much practical information, but also includes detailed information about where to learn survival skills, other survival books and what is covered in them and addresses for suppliers of equipment.

This is one of the best suvial books i have ever read. The book is very clear and easy to understand.It has everything you need for a basic camping trip to any adventure in the outdoors.

One of the best books I've ever read
This book covers a subject that is oft-neglected, but is very important to anyone and everyone.It is engagingly written by a true expert.As odd as this may seem, given the subject matter, in many places it is near profound.

Very informative
This book is an example of why books are great.The knowledge contained in it would be largely lost or very difficult to compile had hte author not taken the time to publish it.He spent his life learning various methods of navigation around the world from many cultures: cultures not assimilated to the modern or western world.
Good, but could be better
This book was able to confront the "old wives tales" to finding your way. An excellent guide for those at sea, but little for land travel. It is best if used in harmony with another outdoor survival guide. ... Read more

Encyclopedia of Survival Techniques by Stillwell
The work provides a plethora of survival techniques to be employed in hostile natural settings. i.e. deserts, moist zones and frigid
He Needed an Editor
This book is pretty bad. For one thing, while the pictures are interesting (pictures always are) they are incomplete, not showing the details one would need to understand how to implement them. Examples like, on the snares, the trip mechanisms are just impossible to see and he doesn't explain them well. Put it this way...if you were lost and had this book with you, you'd starve, freeze to death, or dehydrat by the time you figured out what he was trying to tell you.
not an encyclopedia
If the author thinks because he includes every climate zone and briefly touches each subject makes his book an encyclopedia he is dead wrong. The information is very basic at best but includes nice drawings. Reading the section on primitive firemaking for example I doubt the author ever did it by himself (I did). He mentioned a lot offriction methods but omitted (as usual) the important details for success. If you want a real encyclopedia John Wiseman's SAS Survival Book would be a better choice. ... Techniques and life teachings of wilderness survival
Great book for children and adults that Love their kids enough, to give them simple learning skills that could come in handy, when we least expect it. I know of kid's that have already truly been saved by the lessons taught in such a way that, children remember them forever.Everyone should have a copy of this fine work in their home, because we all like the outdoors, but we never know when we might need the guiding know-how in this handbook. Mountainman Crafts and Skills:A Fully Illustrated Guide...
This is a worthwhile book only if you aren't very concerned about historical authenticity or the material culture of the fur trade period.If you want to make gear with greater historical authenticity you are better off studying the Book of Buckskinning series by Scurlock.The Scurlock series is based on evolving scholarship, and has improved with every volume as historical and material culture research has revealed more knowledge to students of that period in history.

What an uplifting read!!!
I bought this book while traveling solo in Colorado. It took me a while to get through due to my busy schedule -- but, WOW, what a great read!! I laughed, shed a few tears, smiled and got angry. Highly recommended to any woman who aspires to travel solo or anyone trying to better understand a woman who travels solo!!

...I'm married to one of them, a German former journalist, mother of two, whose tales could beat most of these... . Unfortunately, all the stuff she's written in the last 13 years is still in the computer, never sent off.
