5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular visuals, excellent text
This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA.A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents.Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Presentation of Natural Wonder
Paul Schullery presents a book filled with powerful and beautiful images of fifty-six national parks that have been dedicated to the preservation and protection of irreplaceable treasures. This book shows why these parks are so worthy of protection. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for people interested in edible wild plants
My only regret about this book is that it isn't longer!5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Edible Plants
This books shows, in an easy to understand format-in my opinion-a person how to identify wild edible plants that they can harvest (some even in their own backyard). It shows photos of the plants, tells you if there is a poisonous look alike plant, how to identify them, common locations of the plants, and how to prepare them for a meal. If someone wants to learn more about eating plants that grow in the wild, this book is the one I think should be in their library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only Fair for Identification
Identification of edible species is what I want, with emphasis on the first word. From my experience in identifying tree species and other plant ID handbooks,I'd call this one mediocre. The photos are often close-ups with no indication of scale, so size is unknown.Details are not included.Root structure and overall plant structure are seldom shown.ID often depends on flowers, present only for a few weeks of the year.Variation among species is so widespread that I'd recommend at least two good books, with better illustrations than those found here.Drawings, though not "natural", often provide better clues to identity by showing roots, structure, etc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very very good
It is clear that the author has a serious love for Discus. Very easy reading, lots of great information. His excitement is felt in his writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intresting introduction to the discus world
This is one of many books written on Discus by Bernd Degen, an very experienced discus breeder. The book is particularly suitable for the beginning Discus keeper and has excellent topics about discus care andselection. There is an rather good introduction to breeding too, showinhthechniques in detail. It is not an very detailed book, I think most Discusexperts will miss more detailed information on breeding and on selection, specially about the wild types. But in general it is a good introduction tothe novice in the Discus world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ecologist's Bible of Periphyton
I have used this book so much during my MSc Project on Algal Communities, that it became my personal bible for all aspects of benthic algal ecology. It's a very comprehensive book, that is both interesting and relevant rightfrom the start till the very end. All topics are well designed andillustrated and all in all it is very nice to read - not only forEcologists like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
I'm starting to get interested in amphibian id and was looking for a book to help as I join in on frog monitoring and other citizen science projects. So, I haven't gotten to use this book in the field yet since it's still midwinter but the book seems like just what I need. It's a typical field guide in that it has the species plates.Pictures in this section are well drawn with color variations and patterns clearly shown and also described in words. Then there are the species-specific entries where each animal is described, habitats and location maps are provided, foods are described, etc. What I especially like about this book is that in this section they also have actual photographs of the animals shown. The photos are close-up so you can see the eggs or the young of snakes for example.I especially love the section on salamanders and decided not to bother trying to get a book dedicated to salamanders just yet. This has all the info I'll need to get going on understanding and identifying these creatures.Looking forward to a trek out to the vernal pools in March and bringing this book with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and their parents too!
I bought this book for my 7 year old god son.I'd seen and used other Peterson Field Guides, and I can only say they keep improving what was great to begin with.Even though my god son can't read all of the words in this guide, the wonderful color photographs with the reptile or amphibian name make it easy for him to understand. He was absolutely thrilled with this book. There are nice sections on how to capture then set up a terrarium, and to care for reptiles and amphibians in captivity. I highly recommend this for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything a field guide should be!
This is the best field guide I've had for herps. The layout is typical; there are color plates of the species and some written commentary and advice on field herping in the front of the book, followed by species accounts and range maps. Fairly typical layout. However, the way in which subspecies were handled is new, at least to me, and incredibly practical and useful. Those subspecies that are readily distinguishable in the field are given full seperate entries and individual range maps, which is particularly nice with certain large species groups (milk and king snakes, Pitouphis, etc.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Morality among Primates
Good Natured is a good focusing on morality in the animal kingdom, specifically primates. Overall, I thought this was definitely a fairy easy and engrossing read. The book deals with the structure of primate societies and how they enforce morality, how deeply it extends through the primate family (de Waal primarily researches chimpanzees), and instances of love, guilt, aggression, deception from his own research and those of other primatologists. He also describes other philosophies and research into moral systems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Clearly outstanding
I must say that this book has really helped me understand how monkeys, bonobos, and chimps live in both captivity and in the wild.In the same token it has also help understand how they all interact with each other, and sometimes I must admit that they seem to treat each other like humans treat one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars Richly Suggestive Work
This work succeeds most of all by gradually eroding invisible assumptions about morality as an exclusively human prerogative. Chapter by chapter, Frans De Waal builds a convincing and rich assembly of proto-moral practices among nonhuman primates, defining and illustrating terms such as empathy, nurturance, cognitive altruism, and many others along the way. The result, which can sometimes feel like a complicated mass of overlapping and related terms, is a kind of ground shift in perception. This, at any rate, seems to be what he aims to accomplish, staying within the warrant of observational evidence. For some readers this might be a kind of Copernican Revolution against the absolute centrality of human beings in the moral universe. We are not alone: we have moral ancestry and moral companionship (fast disappearing) in the wilderness, in the zoos, and in the animal research laboratories. [As an aside, it also seems clear that there could be no effective substitute for the actual first-hand experience of social primates that De Waal reports]

Editorial Review

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle.Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide
Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide.Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used.I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers
Excellent source of information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Identification
There are excellent photos in this book, grouped by color and then by flower complexity. Each picture in the photos section then has a reference to a printed page where detailed information about the plant/flower is presented. It is easy to use and great for an "amateur".My only complaint with the book is that there simply isn't quite enough of it... but, overall it is far and away the best wildflower book I've seen and I have about a dozen different books I use to try to identify wildflowers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars As its name implies, a good field guide
I have owned this book for about 2 years.I must say that I always brought this book with me every time I go diving in the Indo-Pacific region. It has a rather extensive coverage of the species that you may encounter while diving in this region.Nearly all of the photos are of good quality, allowing for easy identification.Of course, there are species that you may not be able to find in the book. Anyway, I don't think that you can find a book covering all species and it's handy enough to allow you to bring with you while you're on a holiday.Don't expect that this book will give you extensive background information on the behaviour, reproduction...As its name imply, it serves as a field guide for identification of the species and only basic but adequate information elucidated. All in all, I would recommend this book if you want an coral reef identifier of the Indo-Pacific region.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Indo-Pacific diver
I have been diving all over the indo-pacific from Hawaii to Thailand and have found this book to be indispensible for identifying both Fish and Invertabrates. If you are going to only buy one book for indo-pacific marine life indentification, then this should be the one.Occasionally, I will see something on a dive that I can't find in this book, but its not very often. The books biggest strength is that it contains pictures and information on a wide variety of marine life, not just fish. Its also divided into various chapters with good brief introductions on the general behaviors and characteristics of each phylum/family -- something many other books don't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
Very authoritative covering of the animals of the Indo Pacific area. The photos are stunning, and there are a significant number of species listed. This Coral Reef Guide covers: Fishes, crabs, shrimps, invertebrates, coral and other broad subjects. There are scientific names given for use by the marine biologists. For the amateur, however, Golden Guides would be more useful. Once they progress to this advanced guide, they will seek nothing after it. A very nice home reading book for entertainment or admiration. The species shown are incredible, and compell the reader to explore the ocean. Explore this book first of all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Listening to Nature's Songs
Absolutely amazing..I bought this for my daughter who has many birds viitng her outside feeders..My granddaughter also tries to identify the birds by their song..They have the CD rigged next to their patio door..Anytime they are looking for information..on comes the beautiful song birds. It is perfect for anyone who loves the world of birds and their families.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the intermediate birder
I first received this as a gift when I was a beginning birder (basically from the backyard) and to be honest - at that point it was too much for me.I just got confused because actually listening to birds and all their different types of songs/calls and then trying to figure out which bird on the cd it might have been was tough (I'd forget what the bird sounded like and it'd leave before I found it on the cd).But that was me as a beginner. Now that I have a few bird songs under my belt and I can tell the difference between a woodpecker and a nuthatch without a second thought (yea, I was a real beginner) this cd is of better use.Now I can use it to hone in on birds that I think the song might be rather than having to go through so many because it was all so new.So, bottom line, I think its an excellent set of cds that you can really learn from but its better for someone who has thew basics down rather than someone who is the blank slate just starting to learn.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for beginning birders
I bought this collection to replace a set of Aubudon tapes that I'd lost a few years ago, and have found that I much preferred my old tapes to this collection. While the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs is very comprehensive and has great depth and variety, I am unable to use it to identify a couple of fairly common bird songs I hear in my back yard. With only the bird name and no other description provided on the cds, all of the songs and calls start to run together. What I particularly liked about my previous tapes was the additional song and habitat descriptions provided around the calls. The Stokes companion booklet provides some of this information, but my purpose in purchasing an audio guide was to listen, not to read. For an experienced birder or someone who knows what they are listening for in the field, this will probably be a helpful guide. For someone just starting out, a collection of fewer songs and more description would be a better bet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Identify Yourself
I've been looking for a book like this for a while.I highly recommend it to anyone that needs a little bird identification help and is confused on similar looking species. It offers many useful tips and a lot of great advice. This is not the book, however, if you're looking to identify flycatchers or specific shorebirds.Besides that, though, this is a fantastic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, and great value as well.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into the details of bird ID. Pitfalls and difficult problems are emphasized. For example, there is a whole chapter on how to distinguish the immature bald eagle from the golden eagle. Some of those tricky problems seem to be glossed over in the usual field manual, only to present unexpected difficulty later. This is not an introductory text, but it is an easy and entertaining read. Well worth it, and different than the vast majority of texts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginner and Intermediate Birders
This is an excellent book for sorting out and identifying those tricky birds that are difficult to distinguish from one another. It is aimed at beginners and intermediates, but still provides helpful points for advanced birders.Julie Zickafoose does an beautiful job at the illustrations, and Bill Thompson clearly outlines the differences between similar species. This is a good book to own if you are having troubles with identifications. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Activism Masquarading as Science...
Knowing the author by name and by reputation, I borrowed this book from a friend rather than contributing to him financially by paying for it.It's just the kind of pseudo-scientific garbage I'd expect when someone schooled in Philosophy is allowed to write a book on a scientific topic. The serious question of whether - and to what degree - nonhuman animals experience emotion should be entered into not only with skepticism, but with knowledge of how Science should be carried out, and how to go about evaluating the data that results.Masson is qualified to do NONE of these, and seems utterly unaware of that handicap.
1-0 out of 5 stars What this book could have been
It started with a great title, and an interesting subject. In fact, i already started reading it agreeing with the author. However, this book is terrible. It is unbelievably repetative, and the arguments are amazingly bad. If this book was redone using some solid thinking, it would be awesome. We won't change anyone's mind until you write arguments above a junior high level. I would recomment looking for other authors. I went into this book with high expectations, and was very disapointed. In fact, it pushed me more over to the other side as I read it, just because i was so taken aback by the garbage that was being put forth as argument and evidence. There just has to be a higher standard than this. If a student wrote it, i would give it a D.

2-0 out of 5 stars arrogant authors
What a piece of crap!I agree with the overall point the authors attempted to make, but they spent so much time bashing humans while offering so little support for their argument that I want to disagree. The authors should stick to something they know something about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book by far for identifying trees
The instructor I took field biology with in college highly recommended this book.He thought it was by far the best guide for identifying trees. Now, years later and having used (or attempted to use) many different field guides, I know why he was so crazy about this book.Winter or summer, if you are looking at the bark, leaf, or bud, the very clear and detailed pictures and unambiguous text will allow you to identify any tree with certainty.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Book of Trees:A great reference book
This is an excellent and comprehensive book with detailed descriptions of trees by their leaves, flowers, fruits, buds, and bark. The trees are described in their summer and winter aspects. It is a fine reference book not a book to be used in the field to identify trees. You should have an idea which general family of tree you are looking at to narrow the search down as the trees are arranged according to family. At the beginning of each tree description is a section listing those characteristics that are most helpful in identifying the tree. There is also a section at the end comparing the tree to those with which it is most likely to be confused. A glossary of terms is given at the back of the book and dichotomous keys to the families are given at the front. At the beginning of each family more detailed dichotomous keys are given to help the reader distinguish one member of the family from another.Leaf shapes and edges as well as types of fruits, flowers, and buds are illustrated to help the reader understand terminology used in the descriptions
5-0 out of 5 stars More than identification
I bought my 1983 edition when I was active as a park district volunteer. What sold me on this book was that it went beyond the tree's identification, and told you more about the tree itself. For example, looking up the Sycamore it says "The Sycamore is also known as the Buttonwood, Buttonball-tree, and the American Plane Tree.It is one of the most massive of all our native trees, perhaps exceeding all others in the diameter of its trunk... The wood is heavy, hard, tough and coarse-grained; being difficult to work or split. It is used for furniture - both solid and veneer, interior finish, siding, musical instruments, boxes and crates.Practically all butcher's blocks are made from the Sycamore..." and so on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating Photographic Essay of Orphaned African Elephants
Photographer Gerry Ellis spent 2 years with the orphaned elephants of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust at the Nairobi National Park in Kenya in order to document the rescues, daily lives and preparation to return to the wild for these young elephants who have fallen victim to natural and unnatural disasters. In the summer of 1999, prolonged drought and increased ivory poaching brought brought more orphaned baby elephants to the Trust in one season that it had seen in the entire previous decade. Gerry Ellis followed, photographed, and got to know 8 of the young elephants who were one month to one year old when they arrived at the Wildlife Trust. Through more than 100 photographs and accompanying text, we meet the "Orphan 8", learn of the challenges of raising them, observe as the youngsters recover from their injuries and fear, adjust to life at the Trust, develop relationships with one another and with their human keepers, and, after 2 years, move to Tsavo National Park, where they will eventually be released into the wild. An essay by Gerry Ellis introduces each of the book's 6 chapters. Detailed explanations accompany all photographs -not as captions, but full-sized text. I've long been a fan of Gerry Ellis' fine art nature photography, but "Wild Orphans" is fantastic photojournalism and more personal work than I have seen from Ellis before. Ellis' love for this project shows. Admirers of elephants and those concerned with their fate -or that of African wildlife in general- won't want to miss "Wild Orphans".

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK
I love this book. The text was written by the photographer. The photographs alone are priceless.I think it is also a very valuable contribution to the ongoing oftentimes contentious debate about human intervention in the animal kingdom. This book makes an eloquent statement that there are times when it is appropriate to intervene, save the lives of the animals and educate humans on the importance of maintaining animal habitat in the process.

The CD identifies the band containing the bird's call. I had gotten a tape from the library; to find the call you wanted you had to listen to the tape until it was identified. This CD give a number of identifying bird call for each species.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detecting Birds
Most birds, like most wild animals, avoid humans; therefore their distinct songs & calls indicate their presence when sight can not. This collection of bird songs which is organized by habitat and family, is clear, enjoyable listening. It provides an introduction to 276 bird songs and a handy means of confirming bird species by song and call. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Granpa's view
We live by the sea and I bought this book with my grandsons (eldest 4) in mind. The photos are excellent and the text is inspiring, but written with an adult reader (parents) in mind. The book has inspired us to try and show our grandchildren more of nature's wonders both on the beach and in the woods, fields and our garden. However they will be a little older before they can appreciate the book for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Renew your Sense of Wonder
I loved this book. Not only was Carson's essay wonderfully thought-provoking, but it was poetic as well. Her message is simple, if you love nature, share that love with a young person...so that they, too, might one day pass it along.By sharing your love of nature, you help carry hope that we will begin to take a little better care of our mother earth.Read more
