5-0 out of 5 stars Best in its Class
There are few books on animal tracks and tracking that even come close to the quality, validity and credibility of MAMMAL TRACKS...It truly is the best buy for the pages involved. If you want to begin to learn about animal tracks/tracking from a book--then get this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mammal Tracks and Signs - the best
I have been teaching tracking for 30 years and found this to be the best resource yet. Only drawback - it is a bit heavy for backpacking!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tracking down the best
At last, a thorough *and* readable reference for animal track and sign (including "scat")!Other books we have used have been smaller in scope, actually geared more for elementary age kids in scouting.Although a bit hefty, this tome is a *must* for hikers who want to know what they are seeing on the trail.National and State Park rangers have recommended this book to us, and we finally found it on Amazon!YAY! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good hagiography of a controversial man
This is a good introduction to the theories and life of Viktor Schauberger, an Austrian naturalist and inventor. Born in 1885, Schauberger started life as a forester who tried to understand and copy Nature. From watching mountain streams he developed unorthodox theories based on vortex movement about water and its use. He started out designing highly efficient log flumes that used water in vortex motion and at its densest temperature of 4 degrees Centigrade. He then proposed cleaning up the Rhine River by rebuilding the natural curves which stimulate vortex motion in the water. He said that this vortex motion in the Earth caused spring water to be more alive than plain water. He believed that plants grew better in this living water and developed laboratory sized egg-shaped water energizers to activate water.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Start for anyone interested in Learning about Water
I agree that this book is only a brief introduction into the thoughts of Schauberger but hopefully many people are inspired by this book to move forward into the area of water research in an effort to uncover many more truths about what really makes water healthy. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Appetizer, Please Pass the Main Course
This is an excellent, brief introduction to the thought of Viktor Schauberger, and I hope it inspires works which are more complete. Callum Coates' books reach in this direction, but what is really needed are more people to read these books, synthesize their information, and come up with new and original books which take us further into depth in these areas. This will probably involve synthesizing the work of Schauberger, Grander, Bienveniste, and others.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars what it is like to work and wonder way way down under

Editorial Review

The talented Alex Jennings creates an atmosphere of gripping psychological tension and brings a variety of characters to life in this new audio edition of a crime classic. When the student Raskolnikov puts his philosophical theory to the ultimate test of murder, a tragic tale of suffering and redemption unfolds in the dismal setting of the slums of czarist, prerevolutionary St. Petersburg. While Jennings's adept repertoire of British accents works to demonstrate the varying classes of characters, it occasionally distracts the listener from the Russian setting. However, Dostoyevsky's rendering of 18th-century Russia emerges unscathed, bringing the dark pathos (such as wretched poverty and rampant suffering) to life. (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crime and Punishment
Hi my name is Giorgio and I read your book called "Crime and Punishment!" It was a awesome book! I really loved it! I couldn't stop reading it even though my mother said it was time to eat! I love to read sometimes and not! But since this year I've reading a lot more! Especially reading Crime and Punishment! This is my first time hearing about you and I think you're amazing author! This was incredible and I can't wait to hear your others titles!

5-0 out of 5 stars Philosophy, Psychology, or Theology? No, Just Great Literature
Raskolnikov, an impovershed student in 19th Century St. Petersburg, conceives a plan to kill and rob a shrewish hag of a pawnbroker. He justifies his plan because he is an ubermensch and she is a louse. The world will be better off if she is dead and he is able to finish his education. Killing and robbing her will accomplish both purposes. After all, the ubermensch owes it to society to commit any crime that will ultimately benefit society. The crime is perpetrated and the rest of the book deals with Raskolnikov's angst over his guilt and his redemption through suffering. Almost every major character in the book is more likeable that Raskolnikov.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Phil Meets Raskolnikov.........

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get an overview on American Miniature Horses
This is a great book to purchase if you are looking at an overview of American Miniature Horses and what is involved with their care, upkeep and what one can do with these unique equines from keeping them as pets to having them as show animals.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought the book hoping to gain some additional insight into the world of showing & breeding mini horses. If you have been around the show ring at all and have some showing experience - especially in hand, then this is not the book for you.Clipping a bridle path is the same regardless of size of horse. It is this type of elementary subject material discussed in the book.As for breeding, the author recommends live cover as AI for mini's is almost non-existent.I believe you could gain more knowledge from the miniature horse registry than from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Country wisdon and know how
This is generally a good book for people wanting to know how to live off the land. I agree with the review I had read before I purchased the book that the print was small and hard to read. There's alot of good and interesting information in the book, but the print size is a draw-back.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A seed like no other"
Dropped by its parent over three centuries ago, the seed produced something special in the way of a tree.Rising from the soil alongside a river in an island off the West Coast of North America, it produced a Sitka spruce of unusual character. It was a Golden Spruce. When migrating Asian peoples settled on the island it became the source of mythologies, venerated it as part of their heritage. One dark night, however, it was hewn nearly down by a man with a sense of mission.John Vaillant, in a brilliant, comprehensive account of the tree, its worshippers and its changing surroundings, relates how the tree's story is important to us all.
4-0 out of 5 stars good picture of primitive place
Having travelled in the areaI found the description of setting and characters very reminiscent of what I know to be there.Good story but the fifth star is withheld because of pools of distraction here and there in the book.I suspected that the story needed to be "plumped up" to make it book length rather than a short story.
4-0 out of 5 stars No more paper towels for me.
After finishing this book I felt like booking a trip to British Columbia to see some of what remains of the precious forests Vaillant describes.Warning:This book will make you question your consumption habits andyour personal culpability in the destruction of North American forests. If you read it, be prepared for a shock.Few of us outside the logging industry know just how much has been lost.I would recommend this book to anyone. It is entertaining, informative and motivational without being preachy or condescending. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A mind-opening book about nature and the outdoors
I've read this book twice, and both times I've learned (and re-learned) to see and feel and experience more when I go outdoors, go camping, or take wilderness trips.
5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable guide to outer and inner awareness
This is an unusual book in which hard core tracking tips are blended with instructions on cultivation of the inner silence. As opposed to otherstories about tracking which border the domain of fiction (e.g., "The Way of the Scout"), Brown gives us in this Field Guide practical advice on reading animal tracks, constructing shelters etc.The tips on "Nature Observation"in this field guide are unsurpassed by any other tracking book I know. TB provides us with priceless descriptions of what happens the moment we enter the forest - that is, how the alarm signal spreads from the birds to mammals and how long it takes for it to subside. The forest he is talking about is a living entity, where everything is connected and where one can plug into the circuits of the information flow by learning to listen to the sounds, by studying the terrain and the wind and by knowing how to camouflage and mask one's smell. The book provides useful info on various types of walking/stalking in the woods. Finally, there is deep reverence for naturesomething which occurs when one has learnt to be silent amidst the whispering trees (no mean trick for the Westerner who tends to function through the head). Tom Brown has learnt the inner silence tricks from his Apache teacher ("the Grandfather") and trackers might find this book useful for learning more aboutNative American attitudes toward nature. A similar approach to nature is encountered in some of Paul Rezendes' books (which i also recommend). In short, this book will be useful to those who are interested in approaching nature on its own terms. It will inspire the beginners in tracking and complement knowledge of hard core SAR UTS trackers (:)

This book gave me a renewed enthusiasm for nature and an urgent need to be outdoors, I wanted to do everything he was teaching as I was reading it.I went right out and practiced his techniques as soon as possible during and after reading this book. I've never seen so much wildlife as I do now.It has made me a better outdoorsman and has given more meaning to my time spent outdoors.I can't wait to share it with my father who taught me some basics of tracking when I was a boy. This book taught me all the stuff I wished I had learned long ago, now i must make up for lost time I spent with my eyes closed to the things that connect me with the earth. ... "Two hours and yards of catgut later, we dusted the patched up peritoneal surface with sulphanilamide and pushed the entire mass back into the abdomen. When I had sutured muscle layers and skin everything looked tidy but I had a nasty feeling... The extensive damage, all that contamination- peritonitis was inevitable.
5-0 out of 5 stars I would give all of his books more than 5 stars if I could!
If you want a book that will take you back to the country life and its people with all their foibles and admirable qualities and love animals then his books will be pure enjoyment!I love the way he tells his stories. In his stories, he doesn't ever claim to be the best veterinarian around (I think he underrated himself), but you know he is a wonderful, kind, animal and people loving person. The way he speaks about the people and animals he comes in contact with, come to life and you feel you are right there with him.You will laugh, maybe cry, and cheer him on as you read.If you have animals, or raise them, you will love his books, although you don't have to own any to appreciate them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Style
This book shows people solving ecological problems as a community.Weisman engages the reader by showing the people involved, not only the ones with training in certain disciplines, but also natives with practical solutions for living in a Columbian village. Even the children got involved in problem solving in Gaviotos.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not DIY
The vision described in the book is inspiring and very hopeful. The idea is to use our ingenuity in ways directly adapted to our environment so that small towns can be self-sufficient.Along the way, very clever uses of wind and water are discovered and described. If the reader is looking for great general ideas or approaches, this book would be hard to beat.On the other hand, if you are a garage-tinkerer and would delight in building the clever devices described, this book is close but no cigar. The drawings offered in the book purposely omit the most important details required to fabricate the devices in a proper working form.If you are a tinkerer and want to build these "goodies," you have three options. In the U.S., you can e-mail with the "Sustainable Village" web site and get the plans (eventually---they are not quick in responding). You can contact the Gaviotas offices in Bogota, Colombia. You can, of course, also take the basic idea and think through the details for yourself. That could take longer and be a little more expensive---perhaps. If you primarily want the ideas and the inspiration, then buy the book, by all means. If you primarily want to tinker and build, go straight for the plans.

In 1998, journalist Alan Weisman collected and presented information about a little known, yet quite monumental, village known as Gaviotas. To get there, one must travel 16 hours by car from the nearest major Columbian city, Bogot. Even then the path there is not a smooth one; rough, muddy roads and severe political unrest serve as some major barriers in getting to Gaviotas. So why then is such an arduous trip worth it; in essence, Gaviotas is yet another tiny village located in a generally uninhabitable region and possesses none of the modern modes of transportation or communication that we are accustomed to. While in a sense these aspects may be true of Gaviotas, it is also undeniable that this community holds as one of the most efficient, supportive, and thoughtful communities on the planet.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're All Connected ...
I have heard of the work of Cleve Backster in many different places over the years, heard a few radio interviews with him (Art Bell, Jeff Rense, Whitley Streiber, George Noory) and finally, he's written a book explaining it all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enhanced research of Sir J.C. Bose of India
I am impressed with the details of the research this author has done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review is to see again.
I've read the book and the information is amazing. Backster never claims "proof" - but does use controls. Here is an excerpt from a fact sheet available on his website:

5-0 out of 5 stars Great things come in small packages
Williams has put together a visceral, haunting, beautiful stream ofconsciousness aria here. This little tiny book has become one of my veryfavorite works over the past few years I have owned a copy of it. It is oneof those books that tends to find itself hidden on my bookshelf, and when Irediscover it I am in for a real treat. This is the story of a woman who isso aware of her soul that it is almost ethereal. Walking the slot canyonsof Utah and Arizona has always brought out powerful emotions within me, butafter reading this book a few times I literally lose myself in the earthwhen hiking there now. Yes, this is a tale of love and love-making, but onsuch a spiritual level that it is easy to fall asleep and drift into adreamy, watery place of serenity after reading it. What more can a bookoffer than that???? Save yourself the money usually spent on a"relaxing vacation" to a crowded get-away and set a fire in thefireplace, put on some Loreena McKennit and lose yourself in this treasureof a book. Mary Frank's sketches and watercolors set the stage and TerryTempest Williams provides the magic carpet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Erotic Travelogue of the Mind
This book is short: 62 pages is an exaggeration, since many of those pages are filled with sketches and since the book itself is only about the size of a CD case. But what it lacks in length it more than makes up for inbeauty. Terry Tempest Williams is an incredible, widely respected writer, and this book was released to much critical acclaim. Her book details awoman hiking in the canyons of southern Utah, and the thoughts that flashthrough her mind as she walks, and the freedom she feels in nature: thekinds of thoughts we all have when we go hiking, but aren't able to putdown on paper as well as she.Read more
