Great Book!
I loved it. I have referred to it many, many time for my sled dogs' problems, and it is a great source of information. It covers just about everything you need to know for mushing, choosing a dog, making supplies, running them, etc. I would reccomend it to anyone who is an experienced musher or a beginner.

Dog Driver
This is an excellent book for beginners as well as professional. It is the most detailed and updated book on the market. Covering finding the right dog, proper gear and how to use it (detailed photos) quality of food, daily care, medical needs, breeding, training, recreational, distance and sprint racing. I reccommend it to ALL beginner mushers.

Funny, entertaining, a great read!
As a big Paulson fan this book was a great read. Gary provides an insight into the iditarod that only Gary can do. You will feel the cold, share his pain and truley feel you are running the race with him. Gary's love of his dogs and nature come through in this book. Anyone who wants an entertraining lesson on the iditarod, must read this book.

Laughing all the way
My husband read this book first. He constantly interrupted whatever I was doing to read it aloud because he was enjoying it so much. Finally, so that he would leave me alone, I agreed to read a chapter.All I can say is that a book has never made me laugh out loud like this one did.We both laughed until tears were running down our cheeks! I am so glad that my husband has never had any inclination to run the Iditarod like Paulsen did. I'm sure that if he had, the results would have been as hilarious as Paulsen's experiences.It's funny enough just to see my husband pack up to go duck hunting with our two Labs.As he drives off with the dogs disagreeing about who will get to sit up front, I am always reminded of the Three Stooges, but instead of Larry, Curly, and Moe, it's Stan, Daisy, and Buddy.

Laugh until you cry

Not To Be Missed!
If you have plans for the day, do not begin reading this book.You will not be able to put it down!The author tells of her experiences caring for and learning to train Alaskan sled dogs to run in sled dog races.In the process, she introduces the reader to the winning sled dog team for the 2006 Iditarod.When the reader meets the winning team, they are just a group of engaging puppies.If you love puppies, Alaska, or the Iditarod, you will want to make the acquaintance of the charming author and read her delightful story.

Her courage, endurance, her terrors, successes, accidents and setbacks, the camaraderie she found with other sledders, her love of Alaska and her incredible love of the dogs themselves comes through beautifully in this well-written book. Libby's a Courageous Woman
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Libby Riddles personally on a cruise with Princess Cruise Line.Her talk was so enlightening that I bought the book.This is a must read for every Iditarod fan or interested person.The grueling schedule and trails will hold your interest until the end of the book.You'll find out what Libby cared on her sled, how she prepared for each checkpoint and what all the mushers have to endure to come out on top of the pack.You'll easily learn to respect the mushers and the love/dedication they have for the Iditarod.

A page turning adventure for all ages!
Libby Riddles is the first woman to win the Iditarod, which is the Alaskan dog-sled race that covers over 1,000 miles. I felt the chill, adventure and excitement of the Iditarod!

Patting his own back!!!
This writer is so self-absorbed and busy patting himself on the back that he doesn't even come close to giving an accurate report on this race.Having a LOT of experience with this race, I can truly say, this is the worst account of this race I have ever read.If you want to learn about what it takes to run this race, or what it's like to go through the training, the work, the effort, what the dogs are like, what the north is like.. then read Running North by Ann Mariah Cook.Now THAT is a good book.I have also met John and found him to be arrogant and self-serving while writing this book.He defeats the entire purpose of this book by spending more time trying to sound like an expert, or a "local", trying to sound like he fit in here, but no matter how hard one tries, sometimes they can NOT succeed... and he wondered why people wouldn't talk to him.This is the worst book on this topic I have ever read.It was tough for me to get through it but I did it because I was there during the race that year.I wanted to see what he was going to write next that wasn't accurate...seems he was more infatuated with Aliy Zirkle than the race itself, or getting to see his girlfriend, or pretending that he was one of the mushers himself.Just his account of his "mushing" experience (disaster) was so unbelievable, it made me laugh.I am an experienced musher and I can tell you, that was the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.... the entire book is just a bunch of garbage... but then again, he didn't do his homework, his research, and it shows... horribly!!!Don't bother with it. If this is the only exposure you have to mushing or the dog world, then you will be most misinformed... best to spend your time and money on a different book.DeeDee Jonrowe's book Iditarod Dreams is excellent.Tracks Across Alaska is also excellent, but this... a sad waste!!!

Not bad, not great...
Absorbing book, probably a good recommendation for anyone interested in the far north and outdoor adventure. John Balzar writes an interesting account of the Yukon Quest,the second-best-known dog-sled race in Alaska after the Iditarod, and the result is an entertaining story covering both the `mushers', their dogs, and the environment surrounding the competition.
A look into the Great White North
What a great book.After reading, and now re-reading, this book I wanted nothing more than to pack up, quit my city job, and move to the Far North in search of a life dominated by weather, dogs, and the will to survive.John Balzar does a great job describing a life dependant on dogs and neigbors (even though they may be 50-100 miles away) in the huge landscape of the Yukon and Alaska.Although the book mostly focuses on the Yukon Quest dog-sled race, it gives the reader an intriguing look into the culture of the people in and around the dog-sledding culture and the Quest itself.Definately worth the read! ... No match for Paulsen
Every once in a while we go up to Ely, MN, and spend a day or so dogsledding.So, prior to this year's trip, I bought a few books on the Iditarod and mushing in general.
A must read
I thought the book was well written - I read at every opportunity, even my lunch time at work!I'm from South Africa, where winter day temperatures hover around 15 deg C (59 F) and I've seen snow maybe twice in my life, but this story was written in such a way that I'm burning to try mushing myself!Imagine that!I've ordered other books on mushing which, I'm hoping, will convince me that I shouldn't be so crazy. a lot safer than taking on the iditarod yourself
This is far from the best-written non-fiction book I have ever read.The journalist's experience writing in the shorter form of articles shows through in the disjointed feel of much of the narrative.This is still well worth the read if you have any interest in Alaska, mushing, or man's working relationship with dogs.Even without those interests you may well find the book enjoyable.Read more

Makes you want to hug your mutt
This book is not just for adventure readers, but for anyone who has a dog.The real heroes in the book are the dogs, with their selfless determination and spirit.I was amazed by the fortitude of the men in the trek to save a town's population.I would have enjoyed more narration on the actual trek itself, but the author does a great job with supporting information leading up to and after the events that this book is about.

Extremely well done
This is a fascinating book with exceptional detail. The story of the dogsled delivery of of cruicial vaccine/anti-toxin was in itself amazing, but the history and examination of all the contributing factors (from people to dogs to weather) took the story to a higher level.There is a LOT of detail covered - but it is nicely written and chronologically well-placed within the context of the rescue story-line.It adds great dimension.
FOR ALL DOGS LOVERS, HERE IS A GREAT STORY
This is a wonderful written account about the courage and endurance of some wondeful dogs and their drivers.

Book does justice
Even an non-dog mushing fan from Anchorage can acknowledge the huge contributions Joe Reddington made for our great state. This biography by Lew Freedman does great justice to a great Alaskan, tracing his path from the lower 48 states up to Alaska and his family life, adventures and achievements while in Alaska. Reddington have been acknowledge founder of the famous Iditarod Race to Nome, one dog mushing race every Alaskan virtually follow even if he/she isn't a fan. (4.5) Honoring a true Alaskan hero.
Joe Redington, Sr., may not have been an Alaskan by birth, but any resident of the state would agree that he was, and remains, a symbol of the Alaskan spirit. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Redington always had a fascination with the rugged far-north, and read every book on Alaska he could get his hands on. In 1948, at the age of 31, he finally made the decision to pack up his family and move there. They homesteaded in Knik, off the Parks Highway, on the northwestern side of Knik Arm, and that's how Redington got involved with sled dogs. Mushing was an effective way to get from place to place, and Knik Kennels was born. By chance, the property opened directly onto the historic Iditarod trail, which by that time was in poor shape owing to disuse. Redington cleared a section of the trail for his own use, and soon became caught up in the route's historical significance. The famed 1925 "Serum Run" had followed that trail when there was no other means of rushing life-saving medication to diptheria-stricken Nome. Thank you Joe Redington!
I was so pleased with this book that I felt compelled to encourage more people to read it. It offers the history of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race which is interesting enough, but more than that, it is the story of one man who gave everything he had to Alaska and dog mushers everywhere. Very Good
What is wrong with these kid reviewers?I admit, I've never been really fond of Gary Paulsen's books, but i was pleasantly surprised.Seriously, every kid reviewer who hated this book should go out and get a life!Very well written book.

Wilderness Adventures
Gary Paulsen. "Paulsen is the best man-against-nature adventures writing today" according to Publisher Weekly. He lives with his wife Ruth in Minnesota. In "Wood Song" Gary talks about his like in the woods with his dogs. The book is about how unforgiving the wild can be and how he had to learn to deal with death in a hole new way. In just the first few chapters he talks about how on one of his first runs with a sled team he encounters a pack of wolfs chasing a deer. Also he learns that he knows very little about running a dog sled team in the begging, but once he starts running with the team more and more he starts to understand them and why they like to run. The book talks about how close Gary gets to his first led dog Storm. The book then talks about when he ran the Iditarod in Alaska. How he had to survive against the elements with only his dogs as company. In the book Gary talks about where he has been and what he has done.
This is VERY informational
I really enjoyed this book because it talks alot about his life.The book is a little gorey in the first few chapters but it really talks about Gary Paulsen's life.Some quotes that I thought that were meaningful were the parts where he talked about The Doe, I thought that part was interesting to me becuase it talked about life or death which was always a mystery to me.

Great for anyone who loves sled dogs
Being partial to sled dogs myself (I am owned by two) I very much enjoyed leafing through this book. I actually bought it as a gift for my brother who adopted an Alaskan Husky last year, but I may have to buy another copy for myself!

Drama, Humor, Adventure, Surprises
This is an exciting, inspiring, well-written book that I couldn't put down.Written in a logbook style, it tells what happens when the author catches the Iditarod bug.A very satisfying read.

It will touch your heart
Don Bowers wrote it with so much heart, it's amazing! If you love sleddogs, Alaska and the Iditarod - it's a must to read it (especially if you want to run the Iditarod once)! Even if English isn't your mother tongue - you will love it!I laughed but also cried while reading the book. It really touched me very much! Don Bowers was killed by an air-crash in summer 2000 and even if I haven't known him personally - my eyes went wet when I heard about it! I wish I could have meet him once...... (sorry, about my bad english, but even with this english it is easy to read his book)!

Outstanding Biography for a Non-Musher
As a fellow US Air Force Academy Grad, I was thrilled by Don Bowers' adventure!Spending years as an Iditarod pilot, Don finally decides to run the race.He shows the true human effort behind running the race, not as achampion, but as a man willing to give his all to prove his determinationand the love for his dogs.Unfortunately, Don Bowers died this year doingone of the things he truly loved: flying airplanes.This book is a tributeto the man and the sport that took over his soul.I highly recommend thisbook for anyone who loves mushing or for anybody with an adventurous heart. Not so Heroic
Wow. At first I was really enjoying it, but when she started making remarks about the ignorance of recreational mushers, my level of admiration halted and started to drop. I personally wouldn't have said that she couldn't do it, but just because a recreational musher (along with some racers too) said that she couldn't doesn't mean that she can generalize and say that ALL recreational mushers are ignorant about mushing. As a long-time recreational musher, that really made me not like her. As I started looked at her from a different angle rather than the girl-who-overcomes-the-odds, she turned into an arrogant person who uses her eyesight as an excuse for special treatment.

Pure Optimism
I just read this book and found it very fascinating.I was able to relate as a woman athlete, but can honestly say that I will never understand the kind of difficulties this young woman has faced and continues to overcome on a daily basis.I have always wanted to travel to Alaska and see the Iditarod first hand.Rachael has given me a wonderful insight into the race until my dream is possible.After reading this book you will realize that your limits should be set by yourself and only by yourself.Thanks for your incredible story, and CONGRATULATIONS on your 2006 Iditarod finish!!!

Team Player
I don't know much about dog racing, but this story had me mildly interested all the way through, and I learned a lot, not only about the sport, but about blind people and how one girl's courage catapulted her into a 500 mile, grueling endurance race across the wildest parts of a wild countryside.Rachel speaks candidly about how, when she was young, she wanted to be part of the clique of "popular girls" who ruled the roost at school, and how these uncaring girls mocked her and humiliated her for even trying.

Excellent for a Sprint Musher
This is a great book with some great information. It talks about what makes a good dog, running the dogs, training puppies, etc. It is more geared towards sprint mushing, but a distance racer can still get some good ideas from it too.

Jim Welch has written a clear and concisebook on training sled dogs to race. There arespecific examples to clarify most techniques and ample support for the effectiveness of each method. He has successfully condensed the knowledge of many of the world's top mushers into a relatively short book. Consider it essential reading for anyone who wants to reach the maximum potential of their dogs whether they be competitors at the national or local level.Read more

Great book, beautiful --However, not perfect
This book is great, it has beautiful pictures and info.However, I did find a few things that were not to great.First of all, when describing the Alaskan Malamute, the illustration had a pure black dog...Malamutes are NEVER pure black, they can be all white but that's the only exception for all one color, the only labeled pic of malamutes are an all white and all black, no markings!They also had very vague info on them.Malamute's real name is ALASKAN MALAMUTE, no where in the book did it say ALASKAN in front of malamute, well howcome you put SIBERIAN and ALASKAN in front of the husky?And two, I got a pup this August and I'm going to start training, so I read the chapter called "How to train Sled Dogs" it had absolutely nothing about training them except for, start training as pups!Blank spot! On what do you train them? All in all though, this was a beautiful book, I just use it for the pictures now.

Information wrapped inside a beautifully illustrated book
"Born to Pull" was recommended to me by the owner of the kennel where our family would be going for our first mushing experience.Though aimed at upper elementary kids, the amount of information is amazing.Theillustrations enhance the content beautifully; particularly stunning is apainting of a team pulling under the Northern Lights. Not for kids only!
I found this book in the kids' section while looking for Christmas presents.Knew nothing about it, and sled dogs are not my dog-of-choice, but was immediately compelled to buy it even tho it cost more than I'dplanned.Amazingly full of good information, understanding of dogs andpulling, but there was a twinkle in the eye of the author, too.Imaginethe runway team surrounding the ice-fisherman and eating all hiscatch!Read more

Truthful account of one man's Quest
This book tells the story of one man's first experience of the Yukon Quest, and the problems and triumphs he encountered along the way. Very informative for some-one like myself (an armchair musher!)covering aspects which would never occur to me i.e. arranging food drops in advance! Honest Dogs; Harsh Words
The real problem with this book lies not in his treatment of his dogs, but in his treatment of other mushers.It is odd that he could be so criticalof so many of the other mushers from the back of the pack.While not quitean armchair quarterback, he was definitely throwing some cheap shots fromthe sled runners. I had a suspicion while reading this book that he wassearching for a way to justify his utter lack of speed, instead of justreveling in the moment. While it is nice to hear about a musher that caresdeeply about his dogs (as most do), I felt that he simply did not have therapport with his dogs that most succesful mushers have.

Highly recommended for dog lovers & armchair adventurers.
