Great book... could be better...
This book does a great job covering everything basic to intermediate.I'd highly recommend it and I think that it's the best I've seen in this price range.It's not Barnett's manual but it is better than the Park tools and Zinn books in my opinion.I'd like to see more (and better quality) pictures.I've seen high rescolor pictures in books half this price.

Complete, well-written, easy-to-understand.
I like doing repairs and maintenance myself to save money. Now that I have a good bicycle, I want to service it myself. This repair manual is nice. It is full of good illustrations and pictures, tips, and advice. Most things are explained in an easy-to-understand manner. It's obvious that the author likes servicing bicycles, and that he wants the reader to enjoy it too. This makes the book pleasant reading material as well.

we all know this story, but if you want to read a cocky, self absorbed version from lance's perspective pick this up. horribly written, some attempts are made at poeticism ("I keep riding, into the highest peering hills, up the pitch of a mountainside, where green leaves quiver in the cold sun") but overall i'd probably get more out of a 2 page summary of his life on wikipedia.

Inspirational!
Lance provides a lot of insight into his life, who he is, and how he became the greatest cyclist in the world in this book!This book covers his life from birth to the 2nd Tour de France win.The dedication he has to his job (cycling) is so impressive.A truly inspirational story....

The most complete book there is...
Better than the Carmichael books, hands down. If you are a noodle around cyclist...this is not for you. However, if you are willing to read the book, do the tests to determine your fitness, and then develop your plan, and stick to it, it will make you a much better cyclist. I went from the back of the pack, struggle to keep up cyclist(got dropped several times) last year, to a front of the pack, much stronger cyclist this year. A buddy and I put togather a program last fall, and followed it thru over the winter, and now we are much better and stronger. The only other factor in my improvement was probably my Computrainer, which I rode all winter long. The workouts, along with the computrainer did the trick. The only downside to the book is that to get the full value of it you need some way to measure watts, and if you don't have the needed equiptment, you may not get the full benefit.

This is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to get into or improve on already existing road racing skills.

Much better than the competion
I had read all the Chris Carmichael traning books, and found them lacking.There isn't enough detail about what lies behind his programs to allow one to adapt them very well.

Excellent book, inspiring and motivating
I was new to cycling, and I had no idea what I am doing, tried different sources of information, however nothing like this book, its very friendly and targeted towards beginners and even advanced cyclist, the book took me to a whole new level I would not even dream about, very simple and practical to use, unlike other books where they describe advanced training schedule that's not quiet possible if you are working or a full time student like me, it has chapter about female cyclists, very interesting and helpful. The book also describe nutrition thoroughly a subject always overlooked by beginners.
Great training guide for any long distance ride
I've recently decided to ride in my first 200 mile ride and thought I better prepare myself mentaly as well as physically.So I purchased this book.
Kind of Lame
I did not get much out of this book.It looks like a lot of ideas were copied from long distance running data. Important issues like clipless pedals were skimmed over. Also I would like to have seen a chapter on common breakdowns and how to avoid them.Training and nutrition were discussed to death..... ... Read more

An inspiring look at a "pure" champion.
If you have one shred of competitive nature in your soul, this book will dig it out.Any sportsman will reminisce about your times in competition and realize that your true potential was only partially realized.Respect for Armstrong's discipline and focus is commanded and you'll be awestruck by the rigors of his training.
Interesting and informative, but at times overwritten

Educating and entertaining for even the non-cyclist
I am not a cyclist enthusiast, but became kind of a fan of Armstrong after reading "It's Not About the Bike".This is a different type of book.Where that one focused on his upbringing, his passion for the sport and ofcourse his battle with cancer, this book focuses on one tour year.Mr. Coyle was the embedded and welcomed author travelling around with Armstrong's team, which gave him access to much of his life during the tour.A lot of the book focused on the competition Lance faced and it was very interesting how each rider's style was broken down, what his strengths and weaknesses were and most interesting, what their "tells" were (the small, sometimes imperceivable hints that show others that he is starting to break down in a race).This ultimately is when he is "attacked".The best part of the book was the physiology part regarding Lance, his body type and the attributes he has that has allowed him to repeatedly win the Tour.It was this scientific look at the kilowatts he generates per stroke of the pedal, the fact that his body does not produce lactic acid on the scale of the normal person, how his lungs are more efficient as well as his heart, etc, that I personally found to me the most interesting.The author also deals with the steroid controversy, it's authors and how Lance deals with it and the repeated testing he is subjected too.

A must have photo book for any Lance Armstrong fan.
This book is really a must have for any Armstrong fan. In this book he recalls his cycling career from 1992 up to 2003 where he won is 5th Tour De France placing him on cycling's hall of fame with the other 5 time winners. Loaded with lots of his photos in action I give this book a two thumbs up! Viva Le Lance!!!!

What a wonderful way to honor the 7-time Tour de France champ.The photography is awesome, and the book does a great job of capturing images of Lance at every stage throughout his amazing journey, both in the Tour and in life.Much more then just your average coffee table book!

Must-read book for power meter users

a unique perspective
Considering the wealth of information about Lance in other venues, this is a refreshing and unique perspective of the Tour with Lance as more of a backdrop and unifying theme.Definitely a more humanistic side is examined, and it satisfied my interest in more about the "behind the scenes" of the Tour.Reading Mr. Dugard's articles during the 2006 Tour were similarly incitefull and prompted me to read his book which was equally educational and entertaining.

3.5 Stars... Pleasant read about experiencing the Tour up close
The 2005 Tour will always be remembered as Lance's last grand stand in the Tour de France, winning an improbable (and most likely never to be equalled record) 7th straight win. It made for great TV viewing (as I experienced it).
Great Book About The Tour Experience
Marty Dugard does a great job capturing the ambience of this amazing race in print.I've been to the last 10 Tours and what I remember most about my trips to France are the kinds of episodes Mr. Dugard shares with his readers in this book.For those who love the race, it's more than just 189 guys in tight pants crawling up the Galibier; it's the countryside and the food and the spectators and the publicity caravan and 342 days of looking forward to the next Tour.Dugard captures all of it.I'll be there again this year and CHASING LANCE has already got me stoked. ... I planned to write that this book is useless, but it is actually worse - it is downright annoying. Unless you are interested in how Lance surfs the net after a training ride or who his girlfriend is, you will find it far too vague to be of any value.

A "must have" for every cyclist
Lance's name and picture on the book's cover has the major selling appeal. However, it's also the book's drawback. Why? The book says that "inside you find the exercises, ridind schedules, endurance builders, and mental tricks that brought Lance back to the pinnacle of cycling". Sorry, but you will not find this in the book. The book is obviously written by Chris Charmichal, not Lance. You will find in the book every aspect of cycling a beginner should know. An expert that lacks training discipline will also find the book very usefull. But as mentioned before, you will not find Lance's training regiment to win Tour the France. If the book have had the following title, "The Chris Carmichael Performance Program for Cyclists", it should have earned 5 stars. As a "Lance Armstrong Performance Program", it earns just 4.

Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Read more

Still the best guide, but ...
If this the first Zinn MTB maintenance guide you buy, you'll find tons of useful info. If you own the previous version, you'll see most of the material remains the same. The major (and welcome addendum) is the inclusion of rear shocks. However, few models are covered. For front shocks, there is still major and extended references to old forks, which I am in doubt ifpeople still use them, and superficial reviews for new ones. There are a few new items added like tuning rear shocks, Stan Notubes, slime, tubeless etc - but this info is readily available inweb sites. Overall I give this book 4 stars average - five if this is going to be your first copy, three if you have already one.

Essential
I have to say before getting this book I was a little worried it would be to advanced for someone so mechanically challanged to follow but it details just about every thing you would ever want to do on a bike that even someone like me can follow.
Benefits for both Veterans and Rookies
As a rookie, I first checked out the second edition Zinn from the local public library - it taught me the basics of adjusting the limit screws on my derailleur and how to replace spokes on my rigid frame mountain bike.

Extremely useful and helpful
This is a book that every cyclist should have.It is very simply written and set up to be easy to access timely information.It is especially helpful in setting up your bike to avoid injuries that you may not even know you are causing. It is now my goal to go to Colorado and be set up and evaluated on the bike.I am an aging cyclist (almost 60!!!) and this book has increased my hope that this injury prone body will push my bike for years to come.

Expert Advice
Andy's advice has helped me successfully recover from pulled muscles, a strained knee, and more recently the cleat position of my bike shoes.His advice will well proven and since I personally know Andy, he 'practices what he preaches' which gives even more credibility to his expert instruction.

Excellent Book
I was evaluated by Andy in the early 90s for IT Band Syndrome. There is no more knowledgable person on the practicalities of cycling biomechanics than Andy. This book contains a huge amount of information on bike fit, injury prevention, and injury treatment. I recommend this book for every cyclist of any caliber who has questions about fit or injury.

Kids book
Personally I found the style of this book irritating. Its 100% hand written text and cartoons, which don't provide a lot of detail and the jokes were lame. The information is not incorrect - I just found it didn't have enough detail to replicate the moves. And its old... eg, the importantance of pedals with toe clips! Best left for the kids

The bible for adventure motorcycling
I read this book and fount a wealth of information about how to organize travels - infos that I was unable to find on the web until I bought the book.
Adventure Motorcycling Handbook, a must have for dual sport touring enthusiasts
If your planning a trip, this is a must have.Covers everything from bikes, upgrades to them, paperwork, riding gear i.e. luggage, clothing and how to pack it all in.Also what to expect while travelling through various countries.General maps of possible tours through 5 continents.How to handle border officials and what to look out for.Stories of travellers and their experience while riding.Even if your a seasoned motorcycle traveller you will still find it an informative and interesting read.

I found Adventure Motorcycling Handbook to be an excellent guide in helping me plan my upcoming world tour.Beyond the dos and don't of where to go, the "Equipment Checklist" and the pages with profiles of the Riders/Equipment/Adventures offered it oodles of information to help determine many of the factors required to take a safe and fun trip.I would recommend this book to anyone planning for such an adventure.It is also enjoyable for those who are in any way, shape or form passionate about world travel and motorcycling.Nice job Chris Scott! ... A good encouragement to cycle more
Some have criticized this book as if it has little useful to say.But, I found it quite helpful, and I have been cycling for most of the last forty years.
Literary equivalent to the energy bar
This book is broken down into short chapters which can each be read in about three to five minutes.Like Bicycling magazine itself, it manages to be accurate and somewhat helpful, albeit completely insubstantial.I found that reading this book inspired me to ride, which is always a good thing. The subject of road cycling, however, is treated in such a superficial and scattershot manner that the book will probably be of little long term benefit.Like a cliff bar, it's sugary, fast acting, short term fuel for the road.

A good book for the the strait racing bike.
This book was written primarily for the strait road/race bicycle, (the one with the curved handlebars). If this is your bike Irecommend it, even more so if you intend to race. However, except for a brief topic of converting a mountain bike for the road, there is no mention of hybrids in the book. Maybe the book was made before they were available, hence the info on converting a mountain bike for the road. If you have a road bike with upright handlebars, (hybrid, comfort, touring), you won't find any mention of your bike in the book. And the pictures and info in the chapter on bicycle parts is all geared toward the road/racing bike.

Good but I'd like an update and correction
Unlike some reviewers who would like to see Brandt describe and bless novel spoking patterns, I concur with his recommendation of traditional spoking. The traditional tangent tension-spoked wheel is one of the most elegant and efficient structures ever devised. A wheelbuilder may choose a rim, hub and spokes at will and so, construct wheels of many kinds that are not available commercially. With skill and care, an amateur may build wheels of professional quality. The traditional wheel may be built to the desired degree of ruggedness vs. weight, and if damaged, can often be made usable with an emergency repair or adjustment.
The Bible
Jobst Brandt may be an extremely cranky on-line persona, but this book is the best guide to how bicycle wheels work. The section on theory is clear and easy to read. I was able to lace, true and ride a wheel based on the instructions found here.

The wheel building bible
Without a doubt, this is the accepted resource for wheel builders.I think the book is a well-written information source for the new and experienced builder.If you want to know how wheels work, this book is for you.The engineering explanations are useful and detailed.Some feel the author is a little old fashioned in his view point on new products and wheel design.That viewpoint is implied in a few places in the book, but I don't feel it is over emphasized. ... PEDAL is powered by the NY city streets... deep in the funk.
This DVD is for all those interested in the subculture of bicycles, not just bike messengers or track bikes, but fighting for space with cars/taxi cabs, pedestrians and the police. This documentary is fast paced alongside those in the messenger (outlaw) community, and shows the true grit of the rotten apple. While the book has very little text, the small amount is amazing, and it is covered with beautiful pictures of roudy messengers competing in the Bike Messenger World Championships.
