Sponge of Damocles
For those concerned about the frightening state of the world's fresh water supplies, this book is a treasure of information and viewpoints on why humanity should start getting extremely worried about the issue. Fred Pearce has traveled the world to report on water supply horror stories (and a few success stories), with the theme of river health and long-term human usage. This book turns out to have a similar effect for the reader as others on the subject, which dutifully report on who in the world doesn't have enough water to drink and the potential human consequences. (Though this one probably has the most specific examples.) Pearce does give his book a bit of an edge by finding some unique insights into the social and economic problems that are leading us all down a sinkhole of disappearing water.

Absolute must have for Exam Review and for Everyday Engineering
This book is the absolute very best to study Hydrology and Hydraullics for classroon study. After graduation this book was used for my exam review and I reference the manual in everyday actual applications. You will find there are many books to study hydrology and hydraullics but none that is more fundamentally rich with extensive examples of real life situations. This book is the most used reference book I have used.

An excellent book for hydrology and hydraulics
I have recently graduated and am currently working as a Civil/Transportation Engineer for a consulting company.I have used the book in my Water Resources course and worked on it in my Advanced Hydrology class.The strength of the book is all the examples.Many of these are conveniently set up in Table form with a key provided at the bottom of each table.It is an excellent resource that I am using as a reference material now.
Coming from someone who knows this book inside and out...

Save your money - buy Bergey's manual
The book begins with a decent 6 page chapter on the "Initial Stages to the Identification of a Bacterial Culture," then has a condensed version of Bergey's manual, which theoretically could allow identification to the species level, provided the information is correct and complete.I got this book yesterday, and found an error on the first thing I looked up. (in table 7.1 - Streptomyces does produce aerial hyphae.)Read more

Very Good Reference Text
This is a great text full of useful information on over 400 chemicals.The text offers informationon melting point, density, Henry's law constant,soil sorption coefficient, octanol/water partition coefficient, solubility in organics and water, vapor density and pressure.The text includes a section on each chemical discussing environmental fate, toxicity, drinking water standard and use of each chemical.I've found this book very helpful over the last 10 years. ... The Western Water Bible
A beautifully written, thoughtful book about all aspects of western development and overdependence on the scarce water resources in our area. No less important today than the day it was written. Marc Reisner will be missed - he gave voice to this sort of issue like few others could.

Incredible read
Putting to shame the politicians, bureaucrats, ideologies, and cultural ignorances that led to damming nearly every river in the West, this book is brilliantly written--a classic of environmental literature.

The importance and currency of this book is inversely and exponentially proportional to the (decreasing) amount of water in the Ogallala Aquifer. A good complement to "Cadillac Desert," but a notch below
However, while I appreciate other reviewers' passion, Marc Reisner has a broader scope in that book, covering the aquifer-driven irrigation of the High Plains as well as the river-fed irrigation of the Southwest.

I can count on two hands the number of truly pathbreaking works of history published since 1980. "Rivers of Empire" is one of them, and must reading for anyone who seeks to understand the history of this critical region of the United States. essential reading on the West
'Rivers' presents an extensive yet accessible history of Western development based on the author's unique 'hydraulic' thesis -- a hybrid framework that adds an environmental dimension to traditional socio-economic analysis.Essentially, the idea is that the relationship between humans and environment dictates social structure.Whether or not one buys the theory on the strength of this book alone is beside the point.The importance of 'Rivers' lies in its singular, alternative perspective that, when combined with others, reconstructs a more complete story of the West.With that understanding, the reader may appreciate this work without being bothered by its occasional lapses into the kind of flat ideological analysis that seems inevitable in social histories like this.Read more

Best WNC Hiking and Waterfall book out there
Buy this and forget all other waterfall and hiking books for WNC.
Highly Recommended
I visited the mountains last week (Mid May) and with the help of this book I was able to find some really beautiful waterfalls. I never would have known they were there if not for the book. The directions were clear and easy to following, and the information on where to park was extrememly helpful. The best part about it was the fact that we had every waterfall to ourselves. I would highly recommened this book to anyone who enjoys unspoiled waterfalls.

Keeper waterfall book
This is the updated version of the 1994 book - and at its release - it's extremely accurate of trail conditions (just used it).This is the bible for NC waterfalls in my opinion.The chapters are laid out nicely according to region and there are enough details to always set you right direction to each falls.
