5-0 out of 5 stars "Canopy Meg" is the Perfect Role Model for All of Us
What a really terrific read!In this book Dr. Lowman has co-authored with her sons, we find a beautiful story of developing a conservation ethic for families. The tone is so positive and inviting, I felt like I was up in the canopy with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study of diseases and their (mis) diagnosis
This book compiles a GREAT deal of useful information about plantpathology. It covers, as any good work about plant disease should, fertilization, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors such asdrought, freezing, lightning, air pollution, water contamination etc.before attempting to fix the problem, the work stresses the causal effectsand ,similarly, the visual pitfalls that may provide evidence of an unseeninsect symptom (galling, nematodes, etc.)The work was written mainlyfor the temperate zone, but using it in my home sub-tropics was aneye-opener!Reccomended reading for Horticulturalists in the upperechelon, or for Pathologists as a reference, and a reminder to look to theoutlying areas for an answer, It's always there! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, portable, easy to use.
Very good reference guide to have while assessing forest. Is portable enought to take along, without being unreasonably heavy and bulky.Still need definitive text to refer back to, since it's not all-inclusive, but then again, it isn't supposed to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forestry Handbook: Must-have resource for foresters
The Forestry Handbook contains a wealth of information for foresters and other natural resource managers. It's not a book that you read from start to finish (even discounting the 1,335 page length).Rather, it is a superb reference book.I use the Handbook frequently, and have a copy both at work and at home.5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book

Editorial Review

The title of this book could not be more explicit or apt. With 40 actual wood specimens in popular use, descriptions of grain, color and texture, how to identify trees by their leaves, fruit, and bark, and much more, this is a small encyclopedia for woodworkers, carpenters, hobbyists, dealers, architects, craftsmen, nature lovers, teachers, or anyone with the urge to learn about wood. With small, aromatic samples of 40 varieties of wood, from afrormosia to zebrawood, this book even smells good! --Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Focus On European Not USA Species
This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent.Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet and straightforward
This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.5-0 out of 5 stars Great samples. Great book.
If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book tobe a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent academicintroduction to aerial photography
This book is an outstanding, in-depth introduction to the science of aerial photography. At the outset, it must be said that this book does not tell you how to bring in, register, or project your aerial photo in a particular GIS application. What it does tell you is how that photo came about and how it might be interpreted or used. The text reads well, but does require the reader's full attention to absorb all the information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny for arborists and homeowners alike
Printed by Oxford University Press, Pirone's Tree Maintenance has the heft and durability to withstand countless consultations. The text is informative beyond measure and very readable. The photography is black-and-white and didn't reproduce all that well, especially for small and detailed items; photos range from 'Fig. 7-15. Brush chipper and dump truck' (oh please...) to a hollowed-out, decayed Silver Maple resting comfortably on what appears to be a four-bedroom Dutch Colonial (illustrating the section on Identifying Hazard Trees).Good section on insects and diseases (with the caveat that the photos aren't that great); excellent tree-specific section. You will learn a lot from this book--it's a must if you want to rely on another source besides the local tree guy with a chainsaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another book on my Horticulture Short List
Pirone's Tree Maintenance (Seventh Edition) is one of about a half dozen books I keep within arms reach. While Parts I and II provide a fantastic amount of information on the care of trees and identifying problem, it is Part III that I use the most. This section lists common insects, diseases, and problems associated with specific tree species. While by no means comprehensive, it is an excellent place to start when trying to figure out what is going on with a tree.
4-0 out of 5 stars Practical introduction for the novice arborist

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
A very good, highly scientific review of the redwood forest ecosystem.I found this to be a genuine effort on the behalf of the Save the Redwoods League to provide a comprehensive view of the forest, the issues it faces, and how it might be better managed.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Redwood Forest - An Ecological Synthesis
This is the first widely available publication that attempts to describe the ecology of the redwood forest ecosystem. It is aimed at a wide-ranging audience from environmental professionals to the general public with adeeper-than-average interest in redwoods.Thirty-two contributing authorswere involved writing separate sections of the book with Dr. Reed Nossdoing the editing. The nine chapters cover paleocology, human history, flora, fauna, forest ecology, stream ecology, conservation planning, andforest management. As a first attempt at compilation of redwood forestinformation it is welcome and long overdue since there is scant elseavailable. The book includes many new research findings includinginteresting discoveries by biologists working in the forest canopy ofold-growth trees.Unfortunately there are some significant gaps in thecoverage provided (the soil ecosystem is a major one, the importance oflarge down logs is another) and some minor, but annoying, areas ofmisinformation.A more complete review of this book appeared in theJanuary 2000 issue of "Fremontia", the journal of the CaliforniaNative Plant Society. It may be viewed online at the CNPS web site. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly readable - a pleasure to read
This is a highly readable book. The author generously shares his considerable knowledge in language that makes the texteasy to understand. Everything about it is well done: the book is well-organized and well written, with beautiful illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for the new forester and a delight for anyoneelse
This is a book for anyone who likes to read about someone's interesting life or observations, for anyone who likes to get a glimpse of a good man'smind and heart, for anyone who enjoys seeing things in a new way, and--of course--for anyone who owns or may buy wooded property. For the latter, it is an indispensable guide. For the rest of us, it is both delightful reading and consciousness-raising.
