4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I enjoy fishing and eating fish and I enjoyed Hooked. It made me appreciate the scarcity of certain resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wyland of Toothfish
Mr. Knecht will hopefully bring awareness to the plight of the Patagonian Toothfish like Wyland did for whales. This book is well written and keeps the reader interested throughout ... He traces the journey of the "fishing pirates" and also blends the story of commercialization of this soon-to-be extinct fish.Let's save these fish!
5-0 out of 5 stars Combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass
HOOKED: PIRATES POACHING AND THE PERFECT FISH promises much for a wide audience, from those interested in fishing to others researching modern-day pirating and the politics of the sea. The explosive world-wide demand for popular fish has all but fostered over-fishing and all but condoned seafood piracy: HOOKED combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass, a prehistoric-looking fish with the richness of tuna and the texture of butter. It's hard to place this rich text: part culinary history, part social inquiry, largely environmental exploration - it also fits under 'True Adventure'. Many will find it compelling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just as much a NYC history without the oyster.
The Big Oyster is an excellent history of New York City.Unlike many of Kurlansky's books, which always kept the spotlight on the subject (like cod and salt) and its role in history, The Big Oyster often strays far from the oyster. Many of the tales of NYC, from business and prostitution to transportation and development have nothing to do with the oyster.Had this book kept the focus on oysters it would have been much shorter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weaves the story of oyster farming & dining into the greater history of New York to provide a lively culinary & cultural expose
For centuries New York was famous for its oysters which played a hue role in the city's economy and culinary fame. Oysters were the city's most celebrated export, a staple food, and more, and THE BIG OYSTER: HISTORY ON THE HALF SHELL celebrates this era, from food markets to the extinction of natural beds around the city as the decades passed. From cultivation techniques to recipes, THE BIG OYSTER weaves the story of oyster farming and dining into the greater history of New York to provide a lively culinary and cultural expose.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious history...
BIG OYSTER is Kurlansky's latest food-themed history (following his previous COD and SALT). It differs from his previous books in several ways, but still serves up a tasty morsel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Systemic Approach
This book has been very helpful as I begin my hobby in aquarium science. Fish will get sick and I like the systemic approach that this book takes. Many books on fish disease barely cover the surface and don't discuss anything but the most common ailments.Well done, well referenced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done....the best book I've ever seen on fish health!
This is an excellent book for fish health professionals and students alike. It contains methods for diagnosing fish diseases as well as detailed biology, life history, and the current most effective treatmentregimen for each organism. The book covers environmental problems, as wellas bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and nutritional deficiencies. It iswell written and organized making it a good resource book for thelaboratory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marine Biology: An Ecological Approach
Great text. Great price.Book arrived in excellent condition, in a timely manner, and Kevin Serkes, seller, was great with the follow up, and with addressing my concerns about other book orders I had placed.Thank you for a great job!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great text
Most marine biology texts on the market are designed to support lower division courses for non-majors.Nybakken's text, however, is designed with the upper division biology major as its primary audience. This bookis, in my opinion, the best book on the market to support an undergraduatecourse in marine biology for majors.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not just lobsters!!
Saw this book in a bookstore along the Maine coast while on vacation. I decided it would go along with my vacation to read a bit about lobsters--what I did not know was that I would now be hooked on the idea of these "single subject" books--ie-Salt,Cod (Kurlansky). This author has an amazing ability to make what seems like the silliest subject for a book become a complete story--It was one of those books that I was sad to finish, and am now on the search for more like it--I learned of the ocean, history of fishing, culture of Mainelanders, love and life of crustaceans andabout marine scientists and their work- great book--a keeper!

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting I learned a lot...
After I read F/V Black Sheep I got interested in the lives of lobstermen and how they fish. This is a good book and you sure learn a lot about lobsters. I didn't know most of the stuff in this book. I liked F/V Black Sheep better because it was exciting and had more of a story to it but this tells you a lot about the lobsters and how they live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend "The Secret Life of Lobsters" by Trevor Corson
As a fan of nonfiction - often historical and deep ocean or survival related - I have read Linda Greenlaw's books (Hungry Ocean, Lobster Chronicles, etc.), Sabastian Junger's "Perfect Storm" and now look forward to getting into some pages of "Cod" by Mark Kurlansky.

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
This book is very detailed and gives accurate descriptions of all aquatic insects. The pictures with in each chapter also depict what the specimen look like. With all the information on the aquatic insects that is provide by this book it would be hard to believe that there is a better book out there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the pictures
This book is amazingly beautiful. The illustrations alone make it worth the money. As an aquatic entomologist who teaches an aquatic entomology lab to college students, I find this book to be an invaluable source of high quality images for use in my classes. The pictorial keys are also very helpful - they are very easy to follow and make it almost a simplistic task for a lay person to identify aquatic insects down to the family level. Some of these keys are a little outdated since publication of the book, but they are still helpful for the most part.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aquatic Entomology
This is a must have for fly fishermen looking to study entomology as it applies to fishing and fly tying.I saw this book at my local Orvis store (reference only) and one look told me I needed it in my library. The plates and drawings are fantastic. This is a detailed study, but not over the head of most fly fishermen.Match it with Gary Lafontaine's "Caddisflies", Shane Stalcup's "Mayflies - Top to Bottom" and/or Dave Hugh's "Matching Mayflies" and you have the start of a good entomology library for fly fishermen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures but horrible for information
I got this book and I was suprized to find out that it had very little information whatsoever as to how his tanks were set up and the techniques he uses. I would not recommend this book for anything other then something nice to look at and wish that you hand the time to put into making your own tanks look like that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Obviously part III
Important to note this is part III in the series. If you own part one, this is a nice addition. If you don't own part one, get it first. It's the best of Amano's photo books. Yes, these are well photographed coffee table books, not manuals to "do it yourself," although they do give you a lot of good info to work with.4-0 out of 5 stars Nature Aquarium World : Book 3
Its important to note that this book is a series of photographs. There is not very much information to read except how the author looks after the tanks. The photographs are awe inspiring and its worth a place on anyone'sbookshelf. The author works WITH nature to set up these tanks and theresults are stunning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really awsome tale of fishing off the coast of Alaska
This book is a semi-autobiographical tale of the dangers and rewards of fishing in both the Gulf of Alaska and the Bearing Sea.Spike Walker recounts his 8 years of fishing for crab, as well a touches on some of the cod and other fish caught in these cold waters.Walker talks about both the highs (the ability to earn $100,000 in four months, in the early 80's) and the lows (stories of death, missing fishermen, and rampant drug usage).
4-0 out of 5 stars Very well written account of King crab fishing
This is a succint and well-written account of the fishing industry in Alaska. Too often books like this start well and rev you up in the first few pages. But after a while, you get lost in the detail and finish them for the sake of it. Fortunately this book is NOT like that and lives upto the promise it makes in the first few pages. The author sticks to the subject and presents an all-round view of how it really was. There is a good mix of information and action and there is no dull moment.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but a bit boring
I am a huge fan of anything Alaska. This book is good, but a bit boring at times. Perhaps a bit too much drama about the characters and not enough about the sport he is partaking in. Good for an easy quick read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable title for veterinarians
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry.Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences.Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques.Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Colourful & Precise
Comprehensively researched, this book provides a complete history of whaling in Alaska, from its inception to its demise. Whaling was an important part of American history, a unique part that is forever gone, anddeserves examination, despite our present sentiments on the subject. Mr.Bockstoce's history is thorough and provides considerable detail, anddelves into a wide range of issues, from economic factors to the impact onthe Native population. Still, the book is more than history. What makes itfascinating reading are the anecdotes and personal glimpses into the livesof the people who were involved. Whatever else they were, they did not lackfor courage and perseverance. It's their stories, funny, strange, gruesome,or just colorful, that make the lost ships and abandoned harbors andhistory come to life. Overall, an great read for anyone with an interest ina clear and concisely-written history that includes personalities as wellas data.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely well organized and interesting history.
This book is the best one I have read about the history of whaling. It gives the reader a perspective that others sometimes do not. It is well illustrated and gives you the feel that you are actually part of the history Mr. Bockstoce is presenting. You understand how and why the Arctic whaling industry thrived and finally met its demise. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures but dont raise monitors by it,...
The pictures are great and some of the info on wild lizards is good, but dont try to use the info in this book to raise a monitor, it is outdated 20+ year old recycled info. For a good book on natural history get King a Greens book or Harold DeIsle book. Get Daniel Bennets new book for captive husbandry on grassland monitors.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is an excellent overview of the "giant" lizards and touches on their biology and husbandry. It is packed full of beautiful photographs, and all the main families are covered: the Varanidae, Helodermatidae, Teiidae, Agamidae, Scincidae, and Iguanidae.I am always amazed by the variability in skin patterns exhibited by lizards, espeically in the Varanus tristis orientalis. You can feel the author's fascination with these marvels of the animal kingdom and he also gives a brief discussion on their vetinary care. I would have hoped he would have had more to say on the "black spot" problem in green iguanasbut does not mention it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written and thorough book.
Giant Lizards provides excellent, easy to understand information for those interested in Monitors, Agamids, Iguinids etc. It's a must have for any serious collector or researcher. ... Read more
