Great pictures but dont raise monitors by it,...
The pictures are great and some of the info on wild lizards is good, but dont try to use the info in this book to raise a monitor, it is outdated 20+ year old recycled info. For a good book on natural history get King a Greens book or Harold DeIsle book. Get Daniel Bennets new book for captive husbandry on grassland monitors. Excellent
This book is an excellent overview of the "giant" lizards and touches on their biology and husbandry. It is packed full of beautiful photographs, and all the main families are covered: the Varanidae, Helodermatidae, Teiidae, Agamidae, Scincidae, and Iguanidae.I am always amazed by the variability in skin patterns exhibited by lizards, espeically in the Varanus tristis orientalis.You can feel the author's fascination with these marvels of the animal kingdom and he also gives a brief discussion on their vetinary care. I would have hoped he would have had more to say on the "black spot" problem in green iguanasbut does not mention it. A very well written and thorough book.
Giant Lizards provides excellent, easy to understand information for those interested in Monitors, Agamids, Iguinids etc. It's a must have for any serious collector or researcher. ... Read more

Should be required reading in high school
Great and informative book.Puts a lot of the problems now faced in the west into their context.Covers a lot of land history in the west not generally covered in school, but definately not a dry read!

Excellent and thought provoking
An excellent rendition of how western law had transformend the American West into a land for humans, filled with dam after dam.Wild salmon have no where to go.Laws seem to be more powerful than Nature!

Excellent, thought-provoking
A very scholarly, but accessible, history of the development of the West and the social/political/economic structures that shaped land, water and resource rights there. In particular, Wilkinson is addressing the notoriousHardrock Mining Act of 1872 (still in effect), the distribution of land andgrazing rights, the fisheries of the Pacific Northwest, and the timberindustry. His analysis of the Lords of Yesterday - his term for theantiquated statutes that govern those industries - is very convincing. Thebook's only weakness is that this is a 1992 text (presumably researched inthe decade previous) that doesn't reflect changes in the laws and politicalpressures over the past decade. Highly readable - a pleasure to read
This is a highly readable book. The author generously shares his considerable knowledge in language that makes the texteasy to understand. Everything about it is well done: the book is well-organized and well written, with beautiful illustrations.
Handbook for the new forester and a delight for anyoneelse
This is a book for anyone who likes to read about someone's interesting life or observations,for anyone who likes to get a glimpse of a good man'smind and heart, for anyone who enjoys seeing things in a new way, and--of course--for anyone who owns or may buy wooded property.For the latter, it is an indispensable guide.For the rest of us, it is both delightful reading and consciousness-raising.

Hypnotic
These photographs look like abstract art at first, but as you study them you realize they have a flow, complexity, and range of colors that paintings can't duplicate.
Amazing and Powerful
Nowhere I have I seen diverse elements join so naturally as in this book.Science-Art-Beauty-and-Truth all merge through walls I did not know I had.Then I find myself deep inside the colors and nuances of polished crystal, which thanks to Mr. Atkinson's paradigm shattering digital photography, all of us can see, really see, for the first time.

Everything you could ask about Nature's symbolism (to you)
I was on vacation in NW Canada Rockies area and discovered this book in a little shop, and I couldn't leave the country without it (just in case I couldn't find it quick enough in the US).It's beyond "plants" you ID with. There's ceremonies (like making a staff -- or celebrating Solstice etc), a dictionary of landscapes (why are you drawn to oceans), magical rhythms (like seasons, angels, etc) ... even the meaning of numbers in nature (why did you plant two birches?)And of course the expected definition of plants, trees, flowers, etc. (Marigold: "keynote: words have healing power; sacrifice out of love if necessary." "It is a flower of love and sacrifice")

An Important Contribution
I don't have much to say except for that I now own three of Ted Andrews books. I honor his gifts and ability to synthesize great volumes of information into very digestible and heartfelt compositions and descriptive explanations. Surprising Religious Angle from Serious Economist
This book is well worth reading for Daly's explanation of "ecological economics." Rather than looking at the economy as a system existing in a vacuum, where an infinite amount of exchanges are possible to create an infinite amount of economic growth--as neo-classical economists believe--Daly places the economy within the physical environment. This environment of course is a place of limits: limits on raw materials and limits on places to store pollution. Thus, Daly shows that the economy must observe limits too.
Good enough
this book is good enough to get a good view of how SD is going and should go. Though much has changed since this book has been published.Globalization has taken SD in directions that were not previously predicted.

Growth isn't everything
I can't say enough about how moved I was by this book. Having worked in a corporate setting for a number of years, I have wondered how growth can always be the goal of business and how the world can keep expanding and still accommodate everyone's needs. Herman Daly breaks down the problems with economic growth and how fraudulent it is for measuring economic health. Daly advocates sustainable development from a number of economic and social angles. His explanations become abstract at times, but he effectively challenges established economic thinking and offers alternatives.

its my 10th gem book
and it is a little more technical than the rest (explains things like twinning, establishment of density, calculating specific gravity, cleavage, moh's scale, refractive indices, law of refraction, genesis, cutting, cutting styles etc).
If you need to learn about Gems, this is your book.
I can't believe how much information is in this book.I am just learning about gems.There are so many different gems that are the same color.These pictures are worth 10 times the cost of the book.My 10 year old granddaughter also loves it.
Interesting but lacking variety
Went to a gem show and saw that many folks had this book. Made a mistake and bought it here. I had a MUCH MUCH better book titled Gemstones by Cally Hall. The Simon and Schuster book has fascinating sections on how artificial gems are made and such like info (Doesn't include Moissanite.). However, it does not have any info on many many gemstones readily available today, such as Sphene, Sunstone (state gem of Oregon I'm told)and many others. (You can find these in the Simon and Schuster Rocks and Minerals book). If you are only interested in the mainstream gemstones, this book has them. However, as compared to the Cally Hall book, the info is not as well organized nor are the pictures (though mostly very nice) as useful. I will use this as a backup reference book. ... Read more

Life-altering
I'm a big fan of books that give the sweeping histories of common, overlooked substances, particularly when they use language that a layman can understand.(One of my favorites is The 13th Element, which gives the complete history of phosphorus and its promethean relationship to mankind.)Dealing with Calcium Carbonate, this book lives up to its ambitious title, showing how the mineral has influenced everything in civilization, from the earliest chalk artworks, to the plastic on our keyboards.Read this book and you will never look at limestone or paper or a bottle of Tums the same way again.Calcium is as indispensible a part of our experience on earth as carbon or oxygen or nitrogen or cadmium, or any other elements.And what's most remarkable about this book is that it's compelling for everyone.As most of you can probably already infer--I'm not the brightest bulb around.Yet I was enlightened and entertained, from the Cretaceous Period straight through to today.Nice work. ...
