3-0 out of 5 stars The home water supply
worth the price, will save you a fortune, if you have the need for water.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Basic Data
This book doesn't contain the data needed for developing even a simple design for a home water system. For example, there is no data to calculate friction loss from water moving through pipes. The book notes that friction loss is easy to calculate using a table. The book includes a table that lists friction loss for valves and fittings in equivalent length of pipe. But, I can't find a table on friction loss per length of pipe. A third of the book and most of the bibliography is devoted to the author's opinions on water politics, he is no Marc Reisner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great source for home water system design and storage.
This book covers nearly every situation one may encounter in water procurement, perhaps the only subject not covered is hauling water to a completely dry site.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Brutal. Brutal brutal brutal.
In contrast to what others have written, this book is brutal. It isn't that Ms. Shiva doesn't have passion, she does. It isn't that she cannot write, she can. The book is brutal because it is painfully one-sided, seemingly written for no other reason than to pander to those that think as she does.
3-0 out of 5 stars Right Versus Left
Vandana is an entertaining writer. She is passionate about injustice. Shiva is a welcome antidote to the rantings ofright wing ratbags from noisy think-tanks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Earthy Wisdom About Water

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
A very good, highly scientific review of the redwood forest ecosystem.I found this to be a genuine effort on the behalf of the Save the Redwoods League to provide a comprehensive view of the forest, the issues it faces, and how it might be better managed.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Redwood Forest - An Ecological Synthesis
This is the first widely available publication that attempts to describe the ecology of the redwood forest ecosystem. It is aimed at a wide-ranging audience from environmental professionals to the general public with adeeper-than-average interest in redwoods.Thirty-two contributing authorswere involved writing separate sections of the book with Dr. Reed Nossdoing the editing. The nine chapters cover paleocology, human history, flora, fauna, forest ecology, stream ecology, conservation planning, andforest management. As a first attempt at compilation of redwood forestinformation it is welcome and long overdue since there is scant elseavailable. The book includes many new research findings includinginteresting discoveries by biologists working in the forest canopy ofold-growth trees.Unfortunately there are some significant gaps in thecoverage provided (the soil ecosystem is a major one, the importance oflarge down logs is another) and some minor, but annoying, areas ofmisinformation.A more complete review of this book appeared in theJanuary 2000 issue of "Fremontia", the journal of the CaliforniaNative Plant Society. It may be viewed online at the CNPS web site. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The author has made a great effort of presenting the subject matter in an easy to understand and read format. The text covers basic laboratory determination of hydrogeological paratmers to complex calculations and modeling. This book is great because there have been times when I have been working on a problem (effective poristy, density and saturation) and have been able to find an example of it in this book. The text covers one dimensional steady state flow, transient flow, flow nets etc.. Cooper Jacob method, drawdown, well efficiency and numeric groundwater flow modeling.I highly recommend this book.Full of alot of great information and examples/problem sets. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but fails about Brazil
I'm an agronomist and I live in Brazil.I read this book, translated to the portuguese, here in Brazil. This book really has many usefull informations, about water suplly in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener
This is an excellent overview of the water problems plaguing the globe at the moment, as Marq de Villiers travels far and wide to show just how precious a resource water really is.Most importantly, he does so in a very accessible style of writing that personalizes so many of the issues surrounding the rapid depletion of aquifers by drawing on childhood memories of his home farm in South Africa and first hand sources in the current geopolitical battles.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Non-Fiction Page turner (!)
This book is by far one of the most interesting, can't-put-it-down non-fictional books I've ever read. I know, I'm speaking in superlatives, but I can't say enough about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful all-in-one guide to rocks & minerals
What a beautiful book! This coffee table book on rocks and minerals is absolutely stunning.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, fine overview of rock collecting basics
This really is an exceptionally beautiful coffee table book.I didn't really have as much use for the photos and descriptions of commercial and artistic uses of the gems as some of the other reviewers, but did appreciate its excellent overview of the basics of mineral collecting.I'm fairly new to the hobby.I have a general idea of different forms of identification, but because this book goes over the basic groundwork so thouroughly, I was able to close up some of the gaps in my knowledge.Because the photographic reproductions are of such excellent quality, I was able to get a really good idea of what was meant by a velvety luster or a conchoidal fracture, etc.I am not qualified to comment on the factual errors in the book.If they really are that egregious, I'm in trouble, because I'm inclined to use this book as a reference.Being naturally cheap I wasn't sure that the book was really worth the list price of $40, but I do think it's worth the $26.40 that Amazon is (currently) asking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding in its Gorgeousness...if that is even a word...
I LOVE this book! and, (I know!I know!)although people are not supposed to love things but sometimes my things have given me joy, while people were causing great pains...so I must say I love (some) of my things... as well as and including anyone who had anything to do with producing them and getting them to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible and comprehensive
It is the fate of any topic that as its importance rises in the public domain, the quality of the debate on it decreases almost proportionally. Energy security has not escaped this rule. As the intuitive grasp on energy security becomes more complicated, the prescriptions to solve it become simpler and sillier. The purpose of this volume is to navigate through the complicated subject of energy security with solemnity and seriousness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Energy is Security
Bravo to the editors and writers of this very timely policy treatise discussing the very urgent need for the US to realign its foreign policy to secure our future.A must read.

1-0 out of 5 stars What are they trying to prove?
By my reckoning, this book is a wordy, round-about, flawed argument for exploitation of natural gas to substitute for rapidly depleting oil reserves. After peeling away the accolades, one sees that the authors are apologists for the American way of life, but it is strange that they don't seem to come to grips with the fact that North America has long since peaked in natural gas. (Google Oil Crisis and check the gas.) Furthermore, transporting natural gas over large distances is extremely inefficient and sustains US dependency on foreign energy sources, contradicting the authors' stated objectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colourful & Precise
Comprehensively researched, this book provides a complete history of whaling in Alaska, from its inception to its demise. Whaling was an important part of American history, a unique part that is forever gone, anddeserves examination, despite our present sentiments on the subject. Mr.Bockstoce's history is thorough and provides considerable detail, anddelves into a wide range of issues, from economic factors to the impact onthe Native population. Still, the book is more than history. What makes itfascinating reading are the anecdotes and personal glimpses into the livesof the people who were involved. Whatever else they were, they did not lackfor courage and perseverance. It's their stories, funny, strange, gruesome,or just colorful, that make the lost ships and abandoned harbors andhistory come to life. Overall, an great read for anyone with an interest ina clear and concisely-written history that includes personalities as wellas data.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely well organized and interesting history.
This book is the best one I have read about the history of whaling. It gives the reader a perspective that others sometimes do not. It is well illustrated and gives you the feel that you are actually part of the history Mr. Bockstoce is presenting. You understand how and why the Arctic whaling industry thrived and finally met its demise. ... Read more
