Desperately needs larger font and photos.
I am a geologist, but for heaven's sake, pics at least as good as a cheap field guide would be in order, especially for some of the more unusual minerals. Would also love to see some of the zillions of examples of granites that you can find at your average kitchen type granite center. The geology though is good, just a bit dry.

Do yourself a favor - don't buy this book
I think the Danas would be embarrassed if they lived to see their name on the cover of this book - probably the worst compendium of mineralogical data in the history of science. Here, inaccuracies and errors are the norm rather than exception, and the quality of print and paper are no match even to a circa-1900 missionary's Bible. Sloppy sources like this one do more harm than good by perpetuating errors and introducing new ones, so do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned $350 on something else.

Long-awaited reference needs work
As a professional geologist, I use this reference often but I have foundnumerous errors. An example is that the mineral Pentlandite, an importantore of nickel, is not listed in the index. A German website is compiling anerrata list on this book and it is many pages long of spelling, locality,formulae and indices errors. what a disturbing book
I haven't even finished reading this book yet and I'm already feeling queasy about my own diamond ring, which incidentally I haven't worn in a few years due to an allergic reaction.When my husband and I bought it, it was definitely the most expensive thing either of us had ever shelled out money for, except our co-op apartment.Neither of us knew about the bloody history of the industry and the likelihood that the "forever" symbol of our love was so tainted.I'd like to sell it and donate the proceeds to charity.At least then it would do something good for somebody.

Beautiful, heartbreaking, and important
As others here have noted, Tom Zoellner's book is comprehensive, engaging, and deeply troubling for those of us who had planned to proudly wear a diamond one day. In addition to these observations, I'd like to point out several other aspects of the book that place it a step above similar works of non-fiction.
Excellent read
As a current student at GIA, this book gives a total different story about diamonds and the diamond industry. He's fair, honest and meticulous in his explanations. This book is funny, sad, scary and you feel as though you are on a journey with him through the many areas of the world where mining occurs. Professor of Gemology aka Jasper
This book is excellent for everyone.Perfect combination of words and pictures.The things I found to be useful are the descriptions for each gemstone and they have a list of what each gemstone may possibly be confused with.They also give you alternative names for gemstones and the history of the name with its meaning.If you are interested in gemstones this is the book for you.

Outstanding Reference!!!
I use this book constantly as a reference in my hobby.It not only has complete descriptions of the gemstones, but the color pictures are marvelous and include not just one, but MANY pictuers of the gemstones in the rough, polished and cut states.You will be glad you purchased this book.

What the others did not say...
I am going to leave out any helpful information given by the previous reviews, and say what impressed me most about this fantastic little guide. Its size is perfect, the hardback made me happy because it arrived just after another field guide (petersons) which fell apart, losing pages when I first looked into it, and this book looks like it will endure for some time, so yeah! for quality of workmanship, and there are layers and layers of information in this referance.

"Canopy Meg" is the Perfect Role Model for All of Us
What a really terrific read!In this book Dr. Lowman has co-authored with her sons, we find a beautiful story of developing a conservation ethic for families. The tone is so positive and inviting, I felt like I was up in the canopy with them.

A Good Book!
I first met the book in the uni library. Having been teaching natural resources and environmental economics, I find this intermediate textbook with is useful and worthy of recommendating for those postgraduates whohave strong interests in theoretical exploration. Since almost alltextbooks in the market are elementary and are not suitable for theadvanced readers, this book with new approaches has been increasingly usedin the uni. Save your money - buy Bergey's manual
The book begins with a decent 6 page chapter on the "Initial Stages to the Identification of a Bacterial Culture," then has a condensed version of Bergey's manual, which theoretically could allow identification to the species level, provided the information is correct and complete.I got this book yesterday, and found an error on the first thing I looked up. (in table 7.1 - Streptomyces does produce aerial hyphae.)Read more

Excellent information!An Easy & Fun Read!
Ryan and Durnings book contains excellent information about products we use everyday, and how our choices matter.After reading the first section tracing the history of coffee, I was prompted to go to my health food store and purchase "shade coffee" (organic or cooperatively produced).
Serious but fun read
This is one fun and informative book and one I am buying for young as well as older friends. I sit here typing on a computer keyboard and because of the book I see things I never really stopped to see before.And with this comes questions and answers about how many people and natural resources does it take to make all the elements of this modern marvel. Not just the keyboard, monitor and speakers, but the people behind Amazon.com who are consuming coffee, flushing toilets, using lights and machines to process my order.
Limited as an Environmental Guidebook, but Informative.
In "Stuff", Ryan provides a comprehensive description of the materials and processes used to produce, use, and dispose of a variety of everyday consumer products (automobile, hamburger, coffee, newspaper, etc.).He presents precise statistics on the quantity of raw and recycled materials, energy, and pollution caused by this production and consumption of each product."Stuff" is concise and thoroughly researched.

Great contribution to green building
I truly enjoyed this book. One thing that frustrates me about new environmental standards for buildings, like LEED, is the fact that designers and builders are not taking more cues from natural systems when they are planning the actual construction of these buildings.

Systemic Approach

MY ALLTIME FAVORITE!!
This structure book is truly the finest example of what an academic text should be. The content is thorough with no categorical difficiencies. Organization is logical and somewhat unique. However, what makes this work so special is the first author's personal style of creativity. Artwork and the written words are done with a joyful flair. Instead of dry technicalities, students find humor and "common sense" descriptions throughout. How-to descriptions are quite successful. It all goes to show that being a good text author has more to do with conveying the heart of a gifted teacher than with being an "expert". In this particular case, the book is a wonderful product of accomplshed experts who happen to be gifted communicators as well. I wish publishers and aspiring authors would use this text as a model in all subjects.

Good Book for undergrads
This book is one of the complete books in structural geology in the sense that it covers structural geology exhaustively follwed by tectonics which allows you to understand the importance of structural geology in the context of larger scales. Another good quality of the book is that a lot of techniques required for solving practical lab problems are explained lucidly.

Most marine biology texts on the market are designed to support lower division courses for non-majors.Nybakken's text, however, is designed with the upper division biology major as its primary audience. This bookis, in my opinion, the best book on the market to support an undergraduatecourse in marine biology for majors.Read more
