5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the serious, passionate woodlot owner.
Having bought a woodlot in the past year, I praise this book based on real-life experience. This book is an excellent introduction to the forestry terms and practice. I learned all the background I needed to understand a forest management plan and discuss it intelligently with a professional forester. This book discusses forestry issues in detail, but without getting bogged down in arcane minutiae.4-0 out of 5 stars The practical issues of woodlot management
This book is a basic introduction to woodlot management with a focus on the forest ecosystem, basic valuation metrics for trees, and tax and other financial concerns associated with selling your trees. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to forestry for the private landowner
If you own even a few acres of New England forest, you should read this book."Working With Your Woodland" gives a thorough introduction to forestry for thelandowner. Even if you do not own any woodlands, andare just curious aboutthe forestry profession, this book will acquaintyou well with the issues. From the history presented of the New Englandforest through Forest Managementto their postscript on stewardship, thethree authors present their informationclearly and sensitively. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but not quite perfect
For years the Sky Atlas 2000.0 has been the most popular atlas step up from a 6th magnitude atlas. The 8th magnitude limit is deep enough to enable users to find Neptune and the brighter asteroids. The large charts, while they can be a bit awkward to handle, are great to view, as they show wide swaths of sky.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent charts - but for home or field?
These are definitely the best charts I've used to date.I have the unlaminated deluxe copy spiralbound, and to have the objects color coded really helps a ton - makes it quick and easy to find stuff and even helps me orient the map faster. However, I would caution using this in the field. If you have problems with dew, definitely get either the laminated version, or buy it unlaminated and pay to have it laminated.(You may have to compare at stores where you live to figure out if it would save you much to buy unlaminated and then take it somewhere - some have said the price isn't that different, others have said they saved a lot by doing the lamination theirselves.)Another solution is to make copies of the area or constellation you want to observe, then if they get ruined or if you want to mark it to death, you can always make more copies.
4-0 out of 5 stars A superb reference
This is billed as the definitive sky atlas and delivers on that promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful reference
This book is designed with the amateur astronomer in mind. But it is useful for professionals as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for beginner and intermediate astronomers
I just purchased this book to serve as a guide to observing using my new Meade LX200GPS scope. The book is about 8 1/2" wide by 11" tall by 3/8" thick and contains about 140 pages. It contains information on 45 constellations including for each:a one page map with constellation facts and legend followed by 1 to 3 pages of information on 5 to 15 deep sky objects in that constellation. For each object there is a small 1 3/4" by 1 1/2" thumbnail local star chart map and similar sized thumbnail color picture, plus object related data giving R.A., Dec., size, constellation, type, magnitude and short narrative note. There are about 500 objects in total in the book.5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" book for the Amateur Astronomer

5-0 out of 5 stars "A seed like no other"
Dropped by its parent over three centuries ago, the seed produced something special in the way of a tree.Rising from the soil alongside a river in an island off the West Coast of North America, it produced a Sitka spruce of unusual character. It was a Golden Spruce. When migrating Asian peoples settled on the island it became the source of mythologies, venerated it as part of their heritage. One dark night, however, it was hewn nearly down by a man with a sense of mission.John Vaillant, in a brilliant, comprehensive account of the tree, its worshippers and its changing surroundings, relates how the tree's story is important to us all.
4-0 out of 5 stars good picture of primitive place
Having travelled in the areaI found the description of setting and characters very reminiscent of what I know to be there.Good story but the fifth star is withheld because of pools of distraction here and there in the book.I suspected that the story needed to be "plumped up" to make it book length rather than a short story.
4-0 out of 5 stars No more paper towels for me.
After finishing this book I felt like booking a trip to British Columbia to see some of what remains of the precious forests Vaillant describes.Warning:This book will make you question your consumption habits andyour personal culpability in the destruction of North American forests. If you read it, be prepared for a shock.Few of us outside the logging industry know just how much has been lost.I would recommend this book to anyone. It is entertaining, informative and motivational without being preachy or condescending. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A dishonest, misleading book
Other reviewers have noted Alston Chase's biases, though it took my wife the zoologist to point out just how dishonestly he supports them. He claims that nature is subject to drastic change without human intervention and that simple ecosystems are no more unstable than complex ones. He gives as examples (on page 108):2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
While the author does an admirable job of thoroughly outlining one particular version of the history of the ecological/conservancy movement and of the fallacious assumptions in the popular spiritually-overtoned meanings of "ecology" and "ecosystem" within the USA, obvious flaws in this book include the lack: of evidence for his own assertions, of positive elements in the history, of any alternative suggestions to the efforts he critiques, and of any acknowledged culpability for man due to man's science-enhanced unnatural fecundity and destructiveness or man's innate avarice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chase This One Away
I found this book to be fraught with factual errors, and was most notable for the omissions of inconvenient facts. This book is intended to give us the picture of a gentleman who is a moderate, and a voice of reason against eco-terror, but instead what I found was a thinly disguised argument in favor of clear cutting - but the author cannot even remain consistent with that argument, as most of his examples of sustainable systems are drawn from areas where selective cutting has been practiced. Many of the misrepresentations that are evident here are easy to spot if you are willing to research the vast array of literature available onthis subject, but the majority of his audience is not going to be able to take the sort of time to thoroughly research both sides of the question.Don't waste your time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic photos!
It's such a shame this book went out of print because the photographs in it are stunning and exactly what you need for field recognition. The big size was probably it's undoing but at second hand prices it's a great buy despite it's age.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best introductory guide I've ever used.
You can throw away those rock and mineral guides you've been collecting through the years; this well-written and well-thought out guide makes them pale and obsolete. I bought this for myself, then needed another one for ayoung niece who was captivated by its straightforward style andunbelievable photos. It is clean and organized and easy to use as areference. It would also make a great text for self-education as it placesrocks and minerals in context, including photos and descriptions of famouscliffs, sills, and other geologic formations around the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent case for public ownership of water services
This excellent book makes the case for public ownership and control over our water services.
1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER AGAIN
This was, without question, one of the most depressing and boring books that I have ever read.I made the mistake of choosing this book for an analytical book report, and found it to be the most depressing choice I could have made.I wouldn't even reccommend this book to my worst enemy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addresses Threats to Our Most Valuable Global Resource
This was a great book that highlights the current threats to our global water supply. This book was particularly thorough in the analysis of the privatization of water resources. It explains the international institutions that prop up global water companies. I was very impressed with the extensive research that the authors must have put into this book - they used many examples of water issues from around the world. This book is a great introductory book for someone interested in becoming more knowledgable in water issues. It is also a great book for the general public to help them to understand more about a resource they probably take for granted. Don't buy bottled water! It is environmentally wasteful of resources and economically unjustifiable. It contributes funds to private companies and helps to support global water corporations! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars just what I was looking for!
got the book last night, found crystals the next day. I am going for jasper tommorrow. great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars lost with a map
A friend of mine recently got me interested in rockhounding and we went and purchased this book...Anyway, we went to a random site and the maps, although detailed with mileage, don't show distance to site from areas in california.Example, distance from Barstow to Ludlow?YOU have to go there to see the mileagle sign.Secondly, there needs to be better markers on where to turn for these dirt roads. A few sites were passed due to not being where they "should be".I really would hate to take some unmarked road for 10 miles only find it leads nowhere and then have a problem getting back. The lore and history of the sites was nice along with hints of how to dig or uncover rocks but the maps do leave a bit to be desired. Finally, and most annoyingly, all of the photos were black and white and of low quality. How can one tell what green jasper looks like with a black photo?Blooodstone?Rose quartz? This one portion of the book really was what made me not want to purchase my own copy.Maybe future editions will have better maps and at least a few color photos of the rocks, etc. Thanks for your time, Dean

This book really is solid. It's got some of the best information on everything you'll need to be right in the middle of all that this great big state of California has to offer.I have traveled to 14 sites so far, andalmost all of them have been productive and well worth the trip. What Ilike most is the extra types of information given; like the best season tolook for gems and minerals at a particular site, and the specific toolsyou'll need.Especially appreciated are the alternate maps that arerecommended, like the USGS and the BLM, which match up right to the book. Way to go and thank you very much! ... Read more
