5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, inspiring and motivating
I was new to cycling, and I had no idea what I am doing, tried different sources of information, however nothing like this book, its very friendly and targeted towards beginners and even advanced cyclist, the book took me to a whole new level I would not even dream about, very simple and practical to use, unlike other books where they describe advanced training schedule that's not quiet possible if you are working or a full time student like me, it has chapter about female cyclists, very interesting and helpful. The book also describe nutrition thoroughly a subject always overlooked by beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great training guide for any long distance ride
I've recently decided to ride in my first 200 mile ride and thought I better prepare myself mentaly as well as physically. So I purchased this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of Lame
I did not get much out of this book.It looks like a lot of ideas were copied from long distance running data. Important issues like clipless pedals were skimmed over. Also I would like to have seen a chapter on common breakdowns and how to avoid them.Training and nutrition were discussed to death..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Take a really dry subject and turn it into a book I couldn't put down!
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for intuitive understanding of the subject
In the opening chapter, this book presents a wonderful simplified story of the evolution of plants, from a single cell to modern complex flowers. Both children and adults can gain a unique, intuitive understanding of this process from this explanation. My compliments to the author. He describes each plant family with interesting anecdotes and high quality line drawings. It's the first plant book whose lack of photographs didn't matter.Great tips for identifying families and individual plants have helped me enormously.Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches the patterns method of plant identification
Any interested in plant identification should consider Botany In A Day: The Patterns Method Of Plant Identification as an important guide. Thomas Elpel (Director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School, Pony, Montana) deftly teaches the patterns method of plant identification, providing a method for learning about groupings of plants based on the idea that related plants have similar patterns for identification, and similar uses. Black and white line drawings accompany descriptions of different plant families and their identification processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
Just bought this book about 2 hours ago, and put it down only to write this review. This guy is one heck of an artist.5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Your Grass Care a Cut Above Where It Is Today!
Summary:Picture Perfect is the ultimate resource for those who want to add even more beauty and interest to their grass by growing and maintaining healthier turf and cutting it in original and beautiful patterns.4-0 out of 5 stars WHAT AN AMAZING BOOK!
One of the first things I notice about people's homes is the way the lawn is cut. Some might say, "get a life," but to me the landscape design and lawn say a lot. From a psychological point of view, it says something about the people who live there, too!We have all seen lawns cut straight and perfect, every blade of grass precise, row after row - not much creativity there. We have also seen lawns cut haphazardly in every conceivable direction and length, a clump here and a clump there, as if the ride-on mower and its near-sighted rider short-circuited, jumped the fence and rode off into the sunset! 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
If you are going to Disney with your kids, this is, hands down, the best guide out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars my kids (and grandkids) like action
My kids & I used to make a yearly pilgrimmage to WDW in Orlando and now my gradnkids want to do the same. So off I go again. But I wouldn't leave the house (or the car) unles I had Wiley's great guide book in my bag. Everything we need to know is there and the yearly updates make this an imperative take-along travel choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This is one of the best travel guides that I have used! I took my kids to Disney and this book helped me avoid the long lines (that we all know about!), know where to eat and helped me find a good hotel where my kids could be kids. This is a must if you plan on going to Disney! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I enjoy fishing and eating fish and I enjoyed Hooked. It made me appreciate the scarcity of certain resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wyland of Toothfish
Mr. Knecht will hopefully bring awareness to the plight of the Patagonian Toothfish like Wyland did for whales. This book is well written and keeps the reader interested throughout ... He traces the journey of the "fishing pirates" and also blends the story of commercialization of this soon-to-be extinct fish.Let's save these fish!
5-0 out of 5 stars Combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass
HOOKED: PIRATES POACHING AND THE PERFECT FISH promises much for a wide audience, from those interested in fishing to others researching modern-day pirating and the politics of the sea. The explosive world-wide demand for popular fish has all but fostered over-fishing and all but condoned seafood piracy: HOOKED combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass, a prehistoric-looking fish with the richness of tuna and the texture of butter. It's hard to place this rich text: part culinary history, part social inquiry, largely environmental exploration - it also fits under 'True Adventure'. Many will find it compelling.

Every politician should read this book and then look into their hearts.I must say that Mary Tucker's Editorial Preface says everything about Thomas Berry and his desire to enhance human beings' relationship to Earth. His writing is accessible and undaunting. The gift of his genius, still going strong at 90 years of age is expressed again in this book and the message will bring you into the fold of his views with keen insight and compassion. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of Tom Garrison's Students
I took Tom Garrison's class at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.Wonderful class! He taught along with the book and every session was both insightful and interesting.Dr. Garrison is without a match in instructional etiquette and eloquence.Indeed, this book showcases his best work on the subject.Read the book...Be educated by the diagrams and charts...Be taken back at the amazing realms of life under the ocean...And most of all, be in awe of a marvelous earth (or "Oceanus") that is in great need of our consideration right now.Otherwise we end up dead like the aliens...Oops..I hope I did't give a way the ending! If you have few bucks, come and take the class at OCC.You will be so glad you did.Just don't come in late through one of the side doors, or leave your cell phone on.He can't STAND those things! It drives him CRAZY!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ansel Adams of Animals
In these days of digital photography it is seldom that we see a collection like this of black and white photographs with sepia and blue highlighting. And even more rare to see a collection of animal photographs that touch the soul like these. Mr. Brandt further concentrates on the animals themselves, usually at rest. Although looking into the eyes of that cheetah as he stares into the distance makes you glad that you are not a small antelope that he might convert into his dinner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Absolutely beautiful! Has the feel of the 1800's when things were more wild and unknown. The colour form of the photo's enhances this feeling.Presents a close look at how majestic and beautiful the animals are!Such a joy to look at when you're tired of the city, people and the constant rat race of life.A peaceful calming experience!Loved it and look at it often.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing a "key" point...
While this book does address a variety of necessary topics and its overall praise is well-deserved there is a gap, which means there is still a need for a textbook in forensic entomology. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Forensic Entomology
This work is extraordinarily useful to any death investigation professional. It provides an extensive overview of all aspects of forensic entomology with chapter contributions from the leading forensic entomologists in the United States and Canada. It is expertly written so that the investigator with no formal entomological training can easily understand the context of the book, while still on a level that other formally trained entomologists will find very useful. It is richly illustrated with over 150 color photos of insects of forensic importance. This allows investigators to immediately recognize forensic insects at the scene so that collection can be assured. This book is certain to become an invaluable reference for anyone in the field of forensic entomology, or those involved in the collection of entomological evidence from a death scene. It is a perfect complement to the other works published on the subject by K.G.V. Smith and E.P. Catts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable book!
Poor little birdie came into this world and his mother was out getting him his first meal. He goes through a series of, "Are you my mother?" to planes, cows, dogs, until he almost gives up. As this book unravels, you cheer on the birdie while he goes through his wonders of who he feels a sense of belonging to. P.D.Eastman uses repitition and adds easy drawings to perfect a child's love and want to hear this book OVER AND OVER again. One of the first books I learned to read by and still own the same raggedy copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you my favorite book?
Our Grand daughter acts out this entire book with dramatic embellishments and subtle interpretation. It is the most interactive book a youngster from 6 months on can love and enjoy forever.

1-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a child...but it's really inappropriate now!
First, let me say that I learned to read from this book. When I was a kid I knew all the words and I loved it! But then again, I didn't know any better, and frankly, neither did my mom and dad. I was lucky in that the book applied to me: I looked like my mom and dad and therefore the message of the book, that your mother is the one who looks most like you, was seemingly harmless.

Editorial Review

"One of the real tests of writers," notes Ackerman in this liveliest of nature books, "is how well they write about smells. If they can't describe the scent of sanctity in a church, can you trust them to describe the suburbs of the heart?" Ackerman passes the test, writing with ease and fluency about the five senses. Did you know that bat guano smells like stale Wheat Thins? That Bach's music can quell anger around the world? That the leaves that shimmer so beautifully in fall have "no adaptive purpose"? Ackerman does, and she guides us through questions of sensation with an eye for the amusingly arcane reference and just the right phrase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the book
She's an amazing writer. Her artistic, sensual passion wins the day, though she warms up to good science, too.If you enjoy all things Ackerman, or if you are especiallly interested in the senses, then you'll love Nova's "Mystery of the Senses." This is a 5-part documentary featuring each of the major senses. It is based on this book, primarily. It is narrated by Ackerman, and you'll find her (and her glorious '80s era hair) taking mudbaths, sitting by a stream, etc.Thevideo set, like this book, bridges the gap between sensuality and science; experience and explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Heady Succulence of Life" (p. 41)
Imagine having a witty and informed guided tour of one's own sensory apparatus! That is what Ackerman offers. By turns intensely intellectual and cybaritic, the result is an irresistable romp through the world of newly magnified familiarities.
3-0 out of 5 stars A mixture of the memorable, the informative, and the banal
Essayist and poet Diane Ackerman is probably best known for her wonderful New Yorker articles on her investigations of the animal kingdom (including extraordinarily memorable pieces on bats and penguins), most of which have been collected in books. In those acclaimed essays, her idiosyncratic and emotive musings transform the behaviors of other creatures to a human and humane understanding while avoiding anthropomorphic traps.

One of the best introduction to metrology I have read.Great for any anyone that is interested in the weather.Gives more information then average books that are found at local book stores. Also the on line tests help you know what you have learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book. It was expensive (aren't all college textbooks?), but worth it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing extras
For a meteorology reference tool, save money and buy the book used without the CD or infotrac. The blueskies CD is only good for one year from activiation according to the license agreement and infotrac is a 4 month subscription to online databases that are largely available for free at the public library. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Theoretical GA Textbook
This book primarily deals with the theoretical side of genetic algorithms. If you are looking for practical knowledge of how to implement a GA you should look elsewhere. For all intents and purposes this is a textbook. It's heavy on theory and proofs, but doesn't always explain everything in depth (that's what class time is for). There are problems at the end of each chapter that can be assigned to students.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I have an engineering degree, and I found this to be a little tough to follow for two reasons:5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction and much more
First it must be said that the book is not an introduction that the non-scientist will easily understand. Some knowledge of computer programming is assumed. It acknowledges this in the last paragraph of the preface. Many of the notations in the book are unfamiliar to business or financial readers. There is no mathematics beyond algebra so the aforementioned prerequisites are the main hills to climb.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun Digest is Back and better than ever for 2007
I was pleasently surprised when I opened my 2007 edition. It abounds with interesting articles.Tops and lead in this issue was an excellent piece from John Malloy, renowned author of many top notch articles on guns and gun history. He takes you through 60 years of the automatic pistol in the US and neatly ties it into the 60 years of the Gun Digest.I found this year's other articles both very intersting and informative. Those that downplay this years edition either haven't read it, or don't appreciate it. I've given it 5 stars to counteract the insultingly low ratings.I have collected the entire gun digest library starting with the 1944 edition and have read through many volumes of the library.I believe that this qualifies me to speak about the entire body of work that is Gun Digest. I can honestly say that this issue is certainly not one of the worst and would be ranked as a refreshing change from those of the recent past.Get it for the articles, and enjoy it until next year.Ken Ramage and the GD team have made an effort. That says alot in this day and age and I believe that you won't be disappointed - do yourself a favor though, and this goes for any book.Don't pay anywhere close to retail price. You should be able to get this one brand new for around 15 bucks - delivered as of the date of this review!

1-0 out of 5 stars How Low Can You Go
Can't wait till the2008 issue comes out to see how much further you can go to destroy what used to be an excellent publication. No articles, canned content, and errors abound in this publication. Was going to give it 2 stars so I have the ability to downgrade if next years digest gets any worse.

1-0 out of 5 stars It just keeps going down hill
Gun Digest has been going down hill every year since it sold out to new owners back around 1999. This year is a new low. Very few articles and many errors in the canned specs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favourites!
While this book is certainly not comprehensive (especially in regards to the rodents and bats), it has hundreds of crisp, clear photos. The descriptions for each species is brief, but there are still many interesting facts to learn from the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Mammal Enthusiasts
I highly recommend this book as a photo-encyclopedic guide to mammals for children, students and adults who have a general interest in mammals. My review for this book is based on its use as an educational reference guide, not as a guide that one would carry with them out in the field.(It might be suitable for that use, but I am not qualified to review it in that manner.)We use this guide with our son, and I have given it as a gift to children interested in mammals, after looking at all of the top mammal guides listed on Amazon and in Borders.
