5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a Michigan River?
Last summer-99, I fished the Beaverkill and loved it, even in early August during the drought, for two days. I bought this book about a month ago, as I plan to go the the Beaverkill again this June for at least a week. Pepergives a very detailed account on how and where to fish the ponds of theB'kill. His descriptions of the hatches and the ties to fly are a plus tothe book. In the past few weeks I have tied over 100 flies that hedescribes in his book, to take on my trip. I assume from what I have readin the book will make my fishing trip a great success. I recommmend thisbook to anyone even thinking of fishing the Beaverkill, you cant go wrongby buying it. See you in Junction Pool, this summer. Dr. Jim Ann Arbor,Michigan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Kathy Scott has written a wonderful book that captures the quiet, peace and joy of the Maine countryside.Adding to that, she has interweaved it with the story of the construction of a bamboo rod by her husband, David.I think the best thing I can say about it is that it reads as if you were in the same room with her, talking about things that please and things that matter. She continues this story in the second book, Headwaters Fall As Snow, another wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading
I found the reading of Moose in the Water Bamboo on the Bench so enjoyable I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book. This was one of the most enjoyable books I had read in a long time concerning flyfishing and the outdoors.Kathy Scott has done a fantastic job taking you on a journey from start to finish through the adventures she and her husband experience in the Maine woods and his building of a bamboo fly rod.I have read this book 3 times I findthat enjoyable.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and and loves to just read a good book.I greatly anticipate Kathy's next book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Educational
While vacationing in Colorado in 2001, I had the good fortune to find this wonderful book, and meet Gary Hubbell.I was a neophyte fly fisherwoman, and during my one "lesson" with Gary, was struck by his masterful technique, and his reverence for the river and its fish. This is certainly conveyed in the book, which is easy to read and hard to put down!Extremely educational for someone new to this wonderful, peaceful, exciting sport!

I thought I'd lost my rod and reel and then by chance I found them. Then I found Shadowcasting and it definitely rekindled my interest in fishing. It's a little intimidating to start again, especially when I didn't have a clue anymore about how to tie a fly on a line. But Shadowcasting answered all my questions, and lit the fire again.Great fun! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Another Swede speaks out
Gunnar's (a typical Swede) review criticized this book for being narrow-minded, critical and clich about Swedes and for encouraging stereotypes about "bipolar herring-munchers who live deep inside the forest in little red houses without indoor plumbing."
5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the Sequel...
Jennifer Olsson's Fly Fishing the River of Second Chances is not so much a book about fly fishing as it is a travel memoir of the secrets of Sweden as seen through an American's eyes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reinforcing the stereotype
In case you didn't know: Swedes are bipolar herring-munchers who live deep inside the forest in little red houses without indoor plumbing. The Swedish men always prefer to live with their mom until she dies - sometimes longer... In some cases though, in their mid-forties when they hit a mid-life crisis, they go to Thailand to buy a bride and bring home to the mosquito infested village. Swedes rarely say anything at all, if they do it is something shallow about the weather or expressing the urge to get stupid-drunk on moonshine. Swedes also hunt or collect everything they eat i.e. moose and lingonberries. Swedes are indeed primitive, but really harmless and fun to watch. This is the portrait Jennifer Olsson paints of Sweden. 5-0 out of 5 stars From their habitat and life histories, to the most productive flies, techniques and tackle to use when pursuing them
Also available in a hardcover format (1571883347, $45.00), Les Johnson's Fly-Fishing Coastal Cutthroat Trout is the definitive book on the coastal cutthroat, from their habitat and life histories, to the most productive flies, techniques and tackle to use when pursuing them. Coastal cutthroat trout populate nearly all of the streams and lakes along the Pacific Coast rainforest belt from Northern California to Alaska's Prince William Sound. With salmon and steelhead populations in decline, more and more anglers are turning their attention to the coastal cutthroat, and it's Les Johnson's vast knowledge and love for this fish, coupled with data contributed by biologists and academics from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia that make Fly-Fishing Coastal Cutthroat Trout the indispensable, highly recommended instructional guide for seeking to land this particularly feisty and tenacious trout!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but...
... a little too much technical information which makes the reading a bit heavy for those of us with no technical background. Nonetheless I am now making my own leaders following the book's recipies.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't read this book
Leaders are one of the few pieces of gear that make an enormous difference in fly fishing.Judging by equipment sales, there are some people out there who would like to buy some piece of gear that would make them better fishers. The leader is far and away the most likely to allow you to buy an advantage. The obvious example being the Harvey Dry Fly leader, which guarantees you at least as much drag free drift as a week at the best fly fishing school. There are many other examples. My advice though is to search out a formula for a leader for polish nymphing, and get Presentation by Gary Borger. It has the best chapter on leaders I have read, and a few hundred other worthy pages to boot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting and informative
'Fly fishing is solitary, contemplative, misanthropic, scientific in some hands, poetic in others, and laced with conflicting aesthetic considerations. It's not even clear if catching fish is actually the point' is what the author shares and what I 100% agree with!5-0 out of 5 stars Dances has a great beat!
Gierach has a way of lulling the reader into a world of strange illusion. I keep forgetting I'm reading and start thinking I'm eaves-dropping at a campfire. The rhythm of a writer is important and can fan the flame of imagination or dowse it like cold beer on your last match. Dances fans, man...it fans! The stories within the covers are told like stories should be told...easy with lot's of real words. There's too many writers, today, who write like evil spawn of New Age English classes! John bucks 'em all and writes like a story teller...taunting us with worlds filled exotic adventures...like killing porcupines with rocks. Good stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't flyfish? Don't fish at all? It doesn't matter!
I'm an avid bass angler who has never done much flyfishing, but after reading a good Gierach,(they're all great,) I'm ready to head out to that little creek in Montana, or that bass pond in Texas, or even Scotland with a fly rod and join him. This was the first book of his I read and now I'm on my fourth. I love how relaxed and fun his writing is, and I, personally, can relate to a lot of his views and feelings about things. Even for the non-angler, John Gierach is alot of fun, even if you have no idea what the heck a #14 Royal Wulff is. If you're looking for some great reading, go with Gierach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its billing
If you live in New Mexico or southern Colorado and fish or tie flies you will like this book.It catalogs unusal regional fly patterns and the waters to fish them.I, of course, haven't tied or fished all of the patterns in the book but its an enjoyable read.Because these flies are not going to be found in even some of the best fly shops in the region the recipes and tying instructions are worth the price. The instructions also include a variety of techniques that are not as well described in other fly tying manuals. The only negative I can think of is the lack of color pictures, but I have a good enough imagination not to need them.Besides I'm a sucker for books from the University of New Mexico Press. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Color abounds.A fly fishing masterpiece.
If you fish the catskills, this book is a must.I have never seen such a great mixture of photographs and text in a fly fishing book. The books takes you through all the rivers, then presents the region's historic people, their fly tying, and their rods and reels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is by far the most interesting book I have ever read about fishing in the Catskills.Fly Fishing in America pretty much started there and this book explains in great detail everything there is to know about the History of Fly Fishing.Beautiful pictures on every page only add to the value of this book.Coming from someone who never takes the time to read through a 240 page book, I could not put in down. This happened during fishing season.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has made my gift shopping a no-brainer!
As I opened the package that contained my copy of Land of Little Rivers Iexpected a great book.I had read Mac Francis?s earlier book, CatskillRivers, twice. Within minutes I realized the word "great" waswholly insufficient to describe this exquisite volume. At first I wascaught by the, near mystical beauty of Enrico Ferorelli?s photographs--bythemselves, more than worth the price of the book! But it is Mac Francis?swords that captured my heart and imagination completely. They carried mealong, hour after hour, through this absorbing, beautifully told story ofthe birthplace of American fly fishing.Read more
