5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I am a fairly experienced fly tier. This book is admittedly not for beginners, it assumes proficiency. It is well thought out, well set out, has great analysis of flies and their qualities, terrific sections on types of material and their characteristics, just the info that fly tier wants (invaluable for those new to saltwater fly tying). This is an outstanding book

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, comprehensive book
I am a long time fisherman, but new at fly fishing for bonefish. This book has been wonderful for me to better understand what I am doing. This book tells you pretty much everything you need to know and much more.I enjoyed Brown's writing as well as the section in the back where world-renowned experts give their advice also.A must read for any bonefisherman.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible of bonefishing.
This is the most complete guide to bonefishing written to date. For those of us who are addicted to fly fishing for bonefish, this book goes on every trip to the flats. There are a few more recently-written bonefishing books, with updated tackle and location descriptions, but Dick Brown's book is the most complete for learning what to expect on the flats--wading or in a boat.Great photos and drawings of different scenarios when fish are spotted, and tips on spotting fish in different wind, cloud, and temperature conditions. The book has brief descriptions of bonefishing destinations, the best times to go, and what to expect once you're there. There is also an interesting discussion of the bonefish's diet based on a recent scientific study of what bonefish eat.I've flipped through this book so many times, the pages are falling out.If you've ever been fly fishing for bonefish or you are considering going, get this book first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice Sans Snobbery
Rich is the kind of guy you wish your dad was when you were a kid trying to figure out the trout fishing game.He loves fishing and he knows the game thoroughly.Straight forward truths such as using large flies to catch large trout are explained succinctly.Never mind those snob books with titles such as how to catch large trout on tiny flies and whittled down 1/2 pound tippet, Rich sticks to methods that yield the highest probability of luring large trout to strike an artificial fly and then actually landing them. This book is great.Learn from a master to ambush trophy trout from small streams to giant rivers.I could not find a smidgen of bad advice in the book.Unfortunately, I learned the hard way, by trial and error.Gain 20 years of knowledge and start catching large trout from the outset of your fly fishing experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
It's about time some one wrote a book on the west coast surf fly fishing. Covers areas from the Canadian to the Mexican boarders. Well written and laid out. All the information one needs to fly fish in the surf. Good resource on flies, equiptment and the quarry. It's also fun to read. I highly reccomned it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saltwater flyfishing on the left coast
Life size saltwater flies in color on the inside covers. If you don't saltwater flyfish before reading this book you probably will after reading it, if just to have some of these flies in your tackle box.Hanley keepsit simple throughout-pictures abound.A good book to get you started:tackle suggestions; places to fish, and how to fish them; how to read tidetables. Now go out and fish the surf zone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep it in the SUV!
After having attended Harry's classes and then rereading his book I keep finding more useful tips each time.I keep the book in my vehicle with pages marked for quick reference, expecially the formulae for tying leaders. It's an easy read yet full of useful information without a lot of fluff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass by Harry Murray
This book is an outstanding book on smallmouth bass fishing with a flyrod. The book has a wealth of information on equipment, smallmouth bass food and habitat, and techniques and baits for various stream and lake conditions. The recommendations and recipes for his flies are excellent. They really catch fish. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, needs more on lake and large waters
This is probably the most comprehensive discussion of smallmouth bass fishing on the fly.The techniques are very well described and easy to implement. The fly discussion is great, and is what is most oftenneglected in other books. Most other books seem to concentrate on topwater poppers and crayfish imitations. In addition to these, there areother foods that the smallmouth eats and this book provides the flys toemulate them as well as how they should be fished. There are some 'topsecret' flies in here that really work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars guidance on fly fishing by expert with 30 years experience
Darrow imparts more than 30 years of fly fishing experience as both a fisherman and teacher. As in his instruction with innumerable individuals at all levels of the sport, he looks outside fly fishing for references and similarities readers can relate to to help them improve their skills smoothly and quickly. For example, Darrow stresses certain exercises for developing relevant physical motions and control for fly fishing. Listening to music can help a fisherman develop the right rhythm for casting. And the mental training practiced by many athletes has also found its way into the author's unique teaching method. Flies and equipment receive some attention. But the handbook is of most interest for its seasoned and thoughtfully worked out guidance by this author who is widely known in the sport and has received much media attention for his attachment to it and ability to teach others its finer points.

Throw away the book buyback guides! Finally there is a tell-it-all midge book that you will treasure forever.I stumbled across this book as I was perusing the aisles at my local bookstow and knew immediately that I had to have it.Aside from the blatantly Jacobsonian title, this book is your definitive guide to Midge.
5-0 out of 5 stars The midge, tied and true
Mr. Holbrook has done a very fine job of covering how to tie midge pupa, larva, spinners and (a few) winged adults down to size 32 hooks.5-0 out of 5 stars More Patterns Than Tactics
As long as the reader understands that this book doesn't cover a lot of tactics, it's a highly useful guide. The focus is on patterns--how to get the colors right, how to tie them, and what they imitate.Read more

Editorial Review

Long regarded as one of the foremost fly-fishing instructors, Joan Wulff concentrates here oncasting for accuracy with a variety of techniques and training tips. Illustrated with large, easy-to-followdrawings, this is a guide to an aspect of the sport that is frequently overlooked in the zeal to catch fish. Butas anyone who has perfected a variety of casts can tell you, fly presentation is a key to success, and a largepart of presentation is putting the fly exactly where you want it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars indispensable
I waffled for a few months before buying this book. I wasn't sure the price justified a book that appeared to be little more than cross-reference charts. I have several other such charts in other books, and printed from websites.5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
I don't know about you, but I have been frustrated numerous times when looking at pattern books and they refer to another manufactures hook that you do not own. This book helps break that problem and provides a great cross referance for all the leading manufactures hooks. This book is really a breath of fresh air that does a very good job as it is intended to. I, like most of you use one manufactures hooks. So now when I see a pattern that calls for a hook from company ABC I can cross referance it quickly and go about my bussiness. This is a nice book for a reasonable price. This book is ment for all levels of tyers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for the avid (and experienced) fishing enthusiast!
Avid fishermen who tie their own flies will want to take a look at a title which offers at-a-glance comparisons of the models from all major manufacturers. This isn't for novices: Hooks for the Fly is for the avid fisherman who's long needed such a cross-comparison reference, and includes b&w illustrations of over 400 models. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Gary's best!
The 62 patterns in this bookk were included because they work!My favorite fly is the "Roll-Over" Scud, it just seems to work for me no matter where I try it.Gary and his team were some of the first folks to take seriously not only the size, shape and color of the fly; but it's action as well. For years the action of a fly has been ignored.Gary and his team looked at what triggers trout to strike and designed their flies and tested them accordingly. The flies are unconvential, but as I said, THEY WORK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book but limited in scope
This was a fun book to read.It is limited to a few patterns. If you're looking for a listing of what's hot in the west, this is not your bookIf you are looking for some unusual patterns to try, give it a whirl.I tied a handful of these patterns and took them to Montana this summer. They weren't knockouts for me in a half dozen high country lakes. But Gary is a very creative fly tyer and a careful researcher; I don't doubt they work in the right time and place.A well done book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for LaFontaine fans
This is the first fly pattern book that I've ever read from cover to cover.LaFontaine's insights into trout behavior, and his off-the wall sense of humor kept me turning the pages. In all honesty, LaFontaine's flies are weird.I have no idea what the "Air Head" is supposed to be (it looks like something from our office's packing department trash can). The "Creature" looks like it was tied by a 5 year old.And Gary must have been in a different reality when he came up with "Bread."But every time I tie one of these bugs, it works.Usually amazingly well. I think LaFontaine is currently America's most innovative and creative fly tier. This book is a great source for his most effective patterns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Experienced & Beginners
Randall Kaufmann has a way of teaching anyone how to tie flies. Not only is his personal presentation easy to understand, but his books are just as easy.In "Tying Nymphs" he uses color photo's and explains eachstep in detail. My 14 year old son who has never tied a fly, sat down andfollowed the instructions and tied his first "Sparkle Quill CaddisPupa."The book also details tying equipment and supplies. This bookis great for anyone who doesn't tie as well!It explains the importance ofNymphs in the food chain as well as other important information.

Randall Kaufmann's fly tying books are the standard for which all others should be judged. The book is superbly illustrated, from pictures of materials and tools to the step-by-step instructions for the listed patterns.Kaufmann brings the entire fly tying experience together in a concise, easily read book.I have tied flies for years and own approximately 20 books on the subject.I find myself reaching for "Tying Nymphs" or "Tying Dry Flies" more than any of the others. ...
