5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a new useful how to book for experienced anglers
I got this how-to class book for Christmas and I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.The first several chapters of the book deal with equipment, rigging, and knots and I am fascinated to learn that "the way I've always done it" could be improved so much by forgetting what I think I know.

As far as a comparison with Geirach's other books, this book and Flyfishing Small Stream are unlike the other books written by John Geirach. The others, such as Trout Bum, Dances With Trout and the rest, are collections of interesting, insightful and sometimes humurousessays on various flyfishing topics. These would be enjoyed by flyfishermen and women as well as those who do not fish at all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book to begin with
If I had it all to do over again I would begin fly-fishing by reading this book. It's title tells the truth. The book is obviously written for the beginning fly-fisher but that does not mean it is light-weight in itsinformation. Rutter & Card give very solid information and explain itthroughly enough for it to become easy to understand. The book is full ofblack and white pictures and diagrams to help the reader visualize what thewriters are talking about. They will explain what you need to do and thenshow you pictures of how to do it. The Table of Contents is also a big helpbecause it breaks down where you can find each sub-grouping within eachchapter (the Table of Contents is almost as big as the Index). All togetherthis makes "Fly Fishing Made Easy" a book that I am still glad Ihave in my library, even though I am no longer a beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning fly fishers!
This book is well written in a light yet very informative manner. The author's cut to the basics and keep it simple. Well worth the price and the reading.

Editorial Review

Whether you're interested in fishing or collecting bamboo fly-rods--or you simply enjoy good outdoors writing--you'll find it all in this paean to the slightly arcane world of the bamboo enthusiast. There's enough information here for those in need of an overview, including chapters on the history of bamboo rod-building, the master craftsmen of the past, and types of rods, plus the usual assortment of folksy wisdom and well-turned phrases that one expects from the author of Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Read From a Passionate Expert
I must say that I was not looking forward to reading this book as I had heard it was dry and lifeless.
4-0 out of 5 stars one of his best
My favorite John Gierach book happens to be whichever one I am reading at the time, and this one is a welcome addition to the list...Anyone who reads his books knows he prefers bamboo rods to all others, and this book is attempt to put why into words. It offers a brief history of bamboo rod andsomewhat less than comprensive list of current makers of them. (But geez..try and find the magazine he mentions on your local newstand though! ) Noit is not a large detailed book nor will it allow the rank beginner to goout and build himself (or herself) a bamboo rod.(At least I would notwant to try it on Gierach's book alone). But what it is is a wonderful, very readable book on a often forgotten piece of fishing equipment thatevery angler should try once. Like upland hunting with a fine double, flyfishing with a bamboo rod just "feels right". Its an"unexplainable" and no one comes closer to explaining it thatJohn Gierach....

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to bamboo
Very readable, as you would expect from gierech.... but also very short.I got the impression he knocked this one out over a cup of coffee.Having said that, it's fired me with the enthusiasm to fish bamboo in the uk.Thefillers at the end on bamboo rod builders & dealers are not as completeas a quick search on the net will provide... which is probably exactly whathe did.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a fantastic book.It covers the species specific information about fly fishing for bass.It is also very specific about which flies work and which ones do not.I'm sure that it will save me money. This book is not for someone with no background in fly fishing. No space is given to knots, terminology, etc.If you are new to fly fishing, read an introductory text before reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing For Bass
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. Now that I have read it, I can truly say that it didn't disappoint. The writing is pure Lefty Kreh - Straight forward, understandableinstruction on how to catch more and bigger bass with a fly rod. This book is not directed at novice fly fishers.Little space in this little book is devoted to teaching you how to tie knots or flies and the author assumes that you already know how to make the basic casts. The author simply tells you what rods and reels to choose, what lines, leaders and flies to use in a specific situation and how to fish them.If you do as he suggests, you will get satisfying results.Far from a dry "how to" book, this is a distillation of practical lessons learned over a lifetime of studying and pursuing the subject species.I wish a text like this had been available decades ago when I began to appreciate the challenges and rewards of warmwater fly fishing. It could have saved me a lot of wasted time and money.Since reading this book, I am catching more bass, more consistently than ever before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic
This book is right up there with In the Ring of The Rise (Marinaro), Presentation (Borger) and Selective Trout (Swisher & Richards). Need I say more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I certainly have not read all the books in print on fly fishing but I have read many dozens."Trout Fly Fishing: an Expert Approach" is the finest, most authoritive, concise text on the subject I have read. It cuts through much of the unnecessary detail and mystique.Wonderfully organized and well illustrated2-0 out of 5 stars Care for a Spot of Tea?
This book is fun, but more than a bit pretentious. To be passionate about a sport is one thing, but delusions of expertise suggest a rather pervasive sense of inferiority.Fishing is fishing. If you enjoy, so be it.Worry not what others think. Those who fish with worms are no worse or better than those who fish with caddis flies. The idea is to enjoy the outdoors.I love to flyfish. That is all that matters! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to flyfishing the species of Alaska
Admittedly, I am mostly a spin fisherman by nature, but reading this book had me practice casting in the backyard in 10 degree weather. The book is very readable and filled with anecdotes and information that obviously resulted from years of field experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Flyfishing Alaska
This is an excellent how to book for the fly fisherman going to Alaska. Each species of salmon and trout is covered with details concerning best time of year to fish, best fly patterns and what tactics will producestrikes. This is a how to fish rather than where to fish book although itdoes mention many areas worth investigating. I would suggest buying boththis book and the book, Alaska Fishing, by Limeres and Pedersen, whichgives detailed info. on where to fish rather than how to fish. Bothexcellent books that when used together will prepare the angler for thetrip of a lifetime.Tight Lines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic testimonial to the Olympic rivers and their fish
Doug Rose has written a beautiful tribute to the West End rivers and the spectacular fish of Washington's Olympic Peninsula.Three parts conservation, one part natural history, with a bit of how-to fly fishing; Rose's passion for his subject comes through on every page. What makes this read particularly enjoyable is how easily he makes good writing seem effortless.
