An excellent book!
This book is for beginners and advanced alike.I have read similar books from other authors and by far this is the most understandable and best illustrated book on the subject of fly casting.Not only do you understand "how" but as important the "why" of every subject matter.The facts are so clearly put in print I found I was not having to go back and read the same paragraphs over and over to understand the meaning and lesson.Not only is Mr. Kreh one of the best known fly casters in the world he is one of the rare few that has the ability to teach. ... Entertaining, yet informative book!
This is a wonderfully entertaining and informative book about fly fishing the mountain lakes. Although the book was based largely on the Montana lakes that Gary is so familiar with, I strongly believe it applies to most all mountain lakes. I read this book about four times a year, and browse through it every night before going on an excursion. Keeping it from reading like a "how-to" manual, the book has some very well written life adventures of Gary & his friends (human and not-so-human). I have read a few books on stillwater fishing for trout, and was very impressed by the techniques that were described in this text. At last, a book that doesn't teach you that certain methods are "not fly-fishing"! Great job by Gary LaFontaine and friends, and may god bless his soul.

Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes (Summer of Discovery Series)
I loved this book! Gary is a great writer and makes his books full of well researched,sound information. In this small volume he tells you where the lakes are (they really exist where he says-I checked topos!) and challenges you to go! Wonderful, fun book!!

This book mixed enteraining stories with valuable information on Gary's years of observation of the behavior of trout in high country lakes. I have read numerous books and articles regarding techniques to use on highcountry lakes, but have rarely found such valuable information as revealedin this book. In fact, I have read this book twice over the last severalmonths in an effort to soak up all the information, and plan to read itagain before the local mountain lakes start to thaw. A nice coffee table book
This book, and it's companion Fly Fishing Patagonia:the South, is an excellent coffee table books for gringos heading south or who've gone south. If you want a meaty flyfishing guide head elsewhere. 5 stars for a coffee table book, 2 for a guidebook.

Awesome!
I recently returned from Argentina where I purchased this book before it was available here in the US.I own dozens of fly fishing books but there is none that compares to the outstanding photography in this book.It is a book every fly fisherman should own, whether or not they have ever fished Argentina.The book covers every important river in the Lake District and the bilingual text makes for excellent reading.I am purchasing copies for friends. ... Stillwater trout don't want you to read this book!
The typical flyfishing book concentrates on fishing streams of one sort or another.But trout lakes and ponds are often easier to find than good trout streams.Those who have spent any time fishing lakes know that there are some significant differences between the two venues.In this expansive tome Hughes covers stillwater flyfishing from top to bottom. A plethora of modern-day saltwater patterns
Highlighting favorite patterns of many of modern-day saltwater fly fishing's most influential tyers and fisherman, this is a book that any saltwater fly tyer can benefit from.Patterns presented are beautiful, effective, and wonderfully-imitative of many forage species preyed upon by any gamefish that resides in the salt.Some of the patterns are just incredible, and not too difficult to tie thanks to detailed recipes, and in many cases tying steps.I fly fish the length of the East Coast of the US, and can honestly say that this book is worth the money spent.

Fly-Fishin' Fool: The Adventures, Misadventures, and Outright Idiocies of a Compulsive Angler
I really enjoy Jim Babb.His writing touches the part of me that is also a "Fly-Fishin' Fool."I suppose if you are a regular reader of his column in Grey's Sporting News, you'd rebel against re-reading some of his material in book format.For me, that is not a problem and especially since the magazine only appears ever other month, its easy to realize that there is a lot of new material here.

Good information but a little long-winded
The problem with reviews is they reflect the personality of the reviewer. So, take everything I write with a grain of salt.
Rosenbauer did it better
Tom Rosenbauers "Orvis Guide to Reading Trout Streams" is a much better read with more comprehensive, useful, understandable information. Dave Hughes has a few decent tying books and his "Small Streams" book, in my opinion, is his best work, though Gierach gives him a run for his money. Try Rosenbauers book first. You'll be so glad you did.

well written, very informative
I think that the other review does a good job reviewing, but I'll take a stab at it...I am an semi-experienced fisher who needed to learn more about reading the water, and I am gaining a wealth of good information.The only drawback, and this is coming from me, is a lack of good illustrative pictures.Reading about a riffle or ledge is good, and I am learning alot, but if the book had more photos I would think it would be perfect. Tying Foam Flies
I really like Skip Morris books as they show step by step tying methods. I found this book to not contain as many step-by step procedures as his other books.

A Grand Introduction to Foam
I hadn't really taken foam flies seriously until I saw what could be done with a Chernobyl Ant on the Green River. After that experience, I grabbed a copy of Skip's book and headed for my local craft store for a load of foam. Skip can explain tying as well as anyone out there and his patterns are effective. He makes it very clear and easy to tie the patterns in this book, and his descriptions of the various types of foams cleared a clouded subject for me. Buy the companion video for even more clarity.

Good basic introduction to foam
Skip has given us a very nice little guide to types of foam and their usesas tying material.The book is limited to pure-foam or foam and rubberflies.The intention of the author is to provide a starting point fortyers.I wish that the book included a few tips for adding foam tostandard patterns.I use foam under all of my hopper patterns -- theyalways stay afloat. ... lefty krey casting review
Great informative book very clear with nice pictures to suppor the text.

You can't take a video out to the practice pond / lawn.
This is a fine little book of decent and clear line drawings of Bernard (Lefty) Kreh showing the basics.My double haul improved with just a few minutes practice of Lefty's technique. I bought this before a monthlong trip to MT hoping it would be a good resource. The author has bitten off more than he can chew--too shallow, not authoritative,and not the book I thought it would be

A treasury of great information
I've been reading everything I could get my hands on about fly fishing for the past year.This book is by far the best of the bunch to date.If you fish in the West, this is a book you'll want to own.Packed with great advice that will help you catch (and release) more fish. For me, the chapter on pocket water techniques alone is worth the price of the book.

Outstanding book for the beginner or the expert.
A. D. Livingston's writing style informs, entertains, and provides insightinto this form of fly fishing.Unlike other books on the subject, the bookdoesn't have that feel of being a sales tool for a company's products. From basic casting to fly selection, Livingston covers all aspects of usingthe fly rod for bass.He is an accomplished fisherman and his superbknowledge of the species provides very educational reading.My onlycomplaint about the book is that it was originally written 20 years ago. Hegives opinions and recommendations on matters that are somewhat dated. However, I still highly recommend this book because of A. D.'s style.Asyou read, his personality jumps out of the words, making you feel like heis in the room talking to you. The title says it all
Decided to take up bluegill fishing as it is available in some nice places close to home. Thought flyfishing for them would be fun as I did that for trout over the years.
THIS IS ONE YOU WILL WANT TO OWN
This work is an absolute joy to read and putter through.The writing is concise and is quite appropriate and helpful to the long time chaser of Bluegills as well as those just getting started.I have been after this particular species for well over fifty years now, and I learned quite a lot reading this even after all that time.The illustrations and photography are wonderful and add much to the narration.There are not many aspects of this sport not addressed in this work.I highly recommend you add this one to your collection.

A great addition to the fly fishing library.
This is an excellent book on blueguill fly fishing. There was only one bit of bad information in the whole book. The author makes the assertion that graphite rods are a far superior fly rod. This is a useless statement as itis presented. The bamboo rod could just as easily have this claim made forit by someone who is partial to that type of rod. This type of a statementis a sore spot for me, especially when no supporting data is provided.Read more

It's all in the details
I picked up this book to learn the techniques of Chuck-n-Duck fishing.It explains the rigging, structure, casting, etc...It's a great help to get started, but it doesn't make up for time on the water.
FLY FISHING FOR SALMON & STEELHEAD OF THE GREAT LAKES
Superb book.While this book does not have the nice glossy pictures that Steelhead Dreams does, its content is much better in my opinion.I especially liked the fact that Filkins presents all fly fishing methods applicable to Great Lakes salmonoid fishing without prejudice. He covers a wide swath of Great Lakes streams and I learned a great deal about some of the variations that exist in the fishery.A must read for the Great Lakes salmon & steelhead fisherman.
