This is not a fly fishing book.It is really a travelogue for those that would like to travel around the world doing some fly fishing.I'm afraid that I'm don't have that kind of money, time or energy.There is very little to recommend this book and much better information can be found in older books and on the Internet. ... Delightful and enlightening
I learned fly fishing and fly tying using my grandfather's books and gear back in the '70s, so I was already a little behind the times at the very point I started, but I've always enjoyed the sense of connection to past traditions that was inherent then. Somewhere along the way, I fell out of fly fishing for a decade or two, and when I returned, nothing was familiar anymore. Graphite rods, fluorocarbon leaders, tying materials I'd never heard of, reels that look (and cost) like alloy rims from a Ferrari . . . the disconnect was amazing, not only from the familiar but seemingly from the history as well. I retreated to my grandfather's bamboo rod and silk line spooled on an old Heddon Imperial or pre-war Pflueger Medalist.

Extremely comprehensive introductory book
An introductory book covering the topic of lake fly fishing. This is an excellent book for basic concepts and uses science as a basis to move into the various discussions. Had to comment on the previous reviewers low score.....the real message is this is a superb introductory resource.

Nothing above & beyond here!
This is indeed a good book on different techniques to catch fish but the problem is that this book does not offer anything beyond what so many other books do. If this is one of your first complete books on fly fishing then I think you will find great value within the pages but if you already have comprehensive books on technique then you might just as well re-read your others. ... Very informative
I've got more experience casting flies to trout in the Rockies, and having moved to Texas, decided to read up on flyfishing for bass.I have read several of the books that are available, and I think this is probably the best one, at least if largemouths in still water are your most likely quarry.

The best SECOND book out there!
"Production Fly Tying" is the second book you should have in your library (the first being a good beginners book with a few patterns). "Production Fly Tying" doesn't have many complete patterns in it,and the few that are in the book have to be pieced together from section tosection, but it has some of the best tips a tyer could hope for. A.K. Bestgives the reader tips he has learned from his years of professional tying.Each tip is extremely helpful. Best seems to focus on tips that make iteasier and faster for the tyier to increase production while not skimpingon the quality of the fly. Best always has plenty of tips on how to improvethe action and use of your flies. This is simply a great book.

Maybe the best book on the technique of tying?
As noted, the title is very misleading; maybe it should have been called "how to tie the most useful flies in your box in the most efficent way". I liked it...
This book is good in that it goes in detail the whole way through.The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it didn't tell you how to tie the whole fly.It only shows bits and pieces (how to tie the tail fora deceiver, how to tie a zonker body, etc), but I still recommend the bookfor the tyer that likes to flip through for reference.If you really wantto absorb the information, you should read the book all the way through. ... To bad only 5 stars available
This is one of the best books I've ever read.John's insights into flyfishing and it's connection with day-to-day life are phenominal.I'm ready to buy a camper, quit work and spend the rest of my days cruising fron stream to stream.

Funny and Educational -- What a Book!
John is one funny guy. And he knows the outdoors. His cast of characters make reading this series of short stories about fishing, camping, and life outdoors a real pleasure. I only hope his other books are as enjoyable as this one.

Dave Hughes' Small Streams book wins
Dave Hughes did it better in my opinion, though it's the only one that Hughes won out. Makes for decent bathroom reading when you get sick of thumbing through the Fly Fishing catalogs.

How to think about fishing
Gierach is very good at describing the mindset of fishing, and this book is a very good example.There is technical information and practical advice, to be sure, but the most valuable parts of the book are the descriptions of how to think, act, and feel about approach fish on a small stream.And of course, Gierach is a very entertaining writer.

Spectacular photography
This is a perfect gift for a maniacal fly fisherman, the kind of guy that checks out the spiderwebs by the side of the creek to see what bugs have been hatching.The photographs of the various mayflies in different stages of their life cycles are absolutely, jaw-dropping spectacular.The accompanying text is mercifully light on the Latin taxonomy, but contains just the right amount of natural history.As a plus, some examples of flies imitating nymphs, duns and spinners are included at the end of each chapter, along with material info.Of course, they're well photographed, too.A few tips about fishing the hatches and spinner falls are tossed in as well.OK, so if you know what I'm talking about, you want this book.One caveat - the author lives in PA, so it's mostly about Eastern mayflies. ... Midlife crisis of a fly fishing liberal
Really good fishing stories which are ,unfortunately, injected with liberal politics. Why did he have to do that? Apparently he doesn't know that people fish to get away from things like politics.
Great Life Story
This is a great story about life told with a lot of information about fly fishing included. If you are a die-hard Republican and can't take a few barbs, don't bother and buy it, otherwise buy it and you will have trouble setting the book down. After reading it, I feel like I knew his good friend Dick Blaylock, a true champion for the outdoors.
