5-0 out of 5 stars Color photos! a new "Stacked Hair Wing" and PJ wrote it!
Mr. Jorgensen has updated his classic work. His original sits beside my tying desk. The new one will replace the original.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A book that shows clearly step by step tying of full dressed salmon flies.3-0 out of 5 stars P. Jorgensen's Second Ed. of Salmon Flies...
This is a nicely done revision of what was likely the most available reference at the time of the first edition.Poul has updated his text and finally, added color photographs to document his mastry of the art.Havingdog-eared my first edition with use, I was glad to see and buy the newaddition.Probably two things stand out as still needed: 1) betterphotographs of the techniques, and 2) more photographs and description ofthe classic and substitute feathers and their selection for collars, beardsand palmered bodies.Note that this is very well covered in his videos. Editorial Review

Well-known to readers of John Gierach as that author's occasional sidekick on western trout streams, A.K. Best wades into the deep waters of the angling library himself with an authoritative and instructional look at fly-tying. Best details the tying methods for his own popular creations as well as old standards, with plenty of photos of both naturals and their imitations. Also inlcuded is an introduction by Gierach. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars quill flies-- blah
While the photographs are excellent, the packaging high quality, and the instructions clear, I think you REALLY need to buy into the whole quill body thing to take full advantage of this book.I gave my copy to someone who would appreciate it more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best
This is the book after you have been thru the rest. Best shows you how to tie some of the most innovative styles around. Be sure to get his other Fly-Tying books as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy ALLof John Gierach's books
I humbly admit that the title with sex in it made me curious since my partner (new man in my life) and I have a health libido that is matched only by the healthy fly fishing libido we share. So I bought the book, and am so glad I did.5-0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining view of fly fishing for the enthusiast.
For those of you who are either into flyfishing or looking to begin, this is an entertaining view of the sport that has a number of short stories. These stories are inspiring, humorous, and enducational. It is nice tolook up to someone who does the sport for all the right reasons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing views of flyfishing, worth a few chuckles
John Gierach is one of the better-known names in the flyfishing literature, and he continues his tradition of lively, entertaining anecdotes in this volume. Although his often-biting tone can get somewhat tiresome, the book nevertheless has some very amusing stories - a couple of them downright hilarious. Although everybody will find aspects of the book worthwhile, anglers (especially flyfisherfolk) will see aspects of themselves reflected here, and laugh heartily ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coombs on fly patterns & steelhead fishing techniques
Coombs invites the best of steelheaders to discuss their favorate western stream, fly patterns, presentation, and memories.Very useful for patterns and places to fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally, the bible on the subject
I'm not interested in selling this product to or for anyone, and I rarely write reviews, but after reading this book I felt like I had to say something about it. The essence of fly fishing for steelhead CANNOT be encapsulated into a bound volume...the subtle nuances of the sport far exceed the explanatory capacity of the written word. That said, Trey Combs loves this sport like few others I've encountered, and writes with a technical proficiency that is almost completely missing in this genre. The historical information alone makes this volume worth spending twenty dollars of your discretionary income, and if you tie flies, you really NEED to have this book. There is a separate chapter on nearly every relevant steelhead river in the west (save the smaller, out of the way streams, which we all thank Trey for not including). The author has fished them all extensively, knows the locals, understands the ethics of the sport, and writes VERY well. The book is a smooth pictoral not only of fly fishing in western rivers but of the new conservationist mentality that simply must be adopted if we want our kids to ever have a shot at catching a wild steelhead. This one tops out at over five hundred pages, and serves not only as entertainment but as an angling period-piece as well as a streamside and tying-benchside reference. Any one who fly fishes for Pacific Steelhead should own this. On a side-note, those of you who fish for great lakes steelhead should really read this as well. The good doctor Combs calls your fish "land-locked" steelhead and doesn't really comment on the fishery aside from that. Having spent a decent amount of time fly fishing the Salmon River in upstate New York, I can only comment that Trey's technique suggestions are beneficial for anyone fishing anywhere for any strain of steelhead. Although I currently concentrate my efforts on Pacific fish due to geographic convenience, I would love the opportunity to get back to NY and fish the Ontario tributaries again.

Editorial Review

While most of us, if we had our druthers, would cast dry flies to rising fish all day long, the fact remains that a trout takes 90 percent of its prey below the surface. It doesn't require a marine biologist to figure out that on certain days--when the hatch is off--you need nymphs if you want to feel that telltale tug at the end of your line. To this end, Gary Borger provides a comprehensive guide to identifying, tying, and fishing artificial nymph patterns. Chapters on line control (casting and mending), trout biology, reading the water, and fly selection are presented in clear language along with ample drawings and diagrams. As the author writes in his preface, "Fly fishing, and nymphing in particular, is more than just a method of catching trout.... it is an open-ended learning experience with lessons in ecology, limnology, botany, ichthyology, natural history, and much more." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Catch and release
I am an easily excitable female with a voracious appetite so when I saw the title of this book on the shelf I snapped it up and hurried home to get some new techniques for landing my catch of the day.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classics.
I signed this book out of the library in my adolescence and sucked it up like a brown does a golden stone. There are a lot of similar books out there -- and some videos on tying and fishing nymphs as well -- that are useful. But because this book was a formative influence on me and I can not imagine having been without it, I have to give it all five stars. Indispensable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brave new old world
I have only recently starting flyfishing and am in process of learning with dries. Picked up this book in an effort to understand one more aspect of this wonderful sport. Dave Hughes has done an outstanding job whetting my appetite for fishing with soft-hackles, winged and wingless wets (flymphs, I love that word!) and fuzzy nymphs. The respect he has for those who opened his eyes to this area of the sport comes through in the elegant and simple manner in which he explains the material. This is clear, practical, and a whole lot of fun. Terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
Hughes' writing is clear and concise. His distillation of work by earlier writers on the subject is lively. It appears to me that he is generous in acknowledging the innovations and achievements of others including his own contemporaries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wet Flies - the best!
This is the best book available right now for learning general theory of subsurface fishing. Hughes codifies all the previous knowledge and techniques of famous fly-fishers of the past and compiles all of this into a book that is informative and very easy to read. The discussion of the patterns is worth the price alone. The techniques for fishing the patterns could be put in another book and would be a bargin itself. And his personal knowledge and friendship with Nemes, Hidy, and Rosenberg is demonstrated in stories of fishing with them. Really, this book is good read at any time of the year, not just the winter. Get it, read it, use it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Worthy
The sequel to Raine's highly accomplished, insightful, and poignantfirst memoir, Fly Fishing Through the Midlife Crisis, The One That Got Away fills in the gap between the late eighties and the present, and tracks the occasionally painful arc of the author's professional career and personal life. Compared to Midlife Crisis, the tale is a darker one. Whereas Midlife Crisis had its share of regret, his new memoir has both regret combined with a substantial dose of bitterness, which on occasion gets the better of the author. Still, it's an excellent and in some places truly exceptional piece of work, not lacking in its share of humor, warmth, and wisdom that is clearly hard earned but generously shared. Also, it's simply a pleasure to read such wonderful writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly impressive and insightful memoir
Howell Raines writes an incredibly insightful and thoughtful memoir. His descriptive prose is so vivid, and his observations are so accurate that you are "in the moment" from the first paragraphs of the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars The author is the one who got away!
While at the new york times, the author 'got away' with lies, innuendo, misstatements, and untruths that he believed he could pass along to the readers as unbiased reporting and news. Under his supervision, reporters were uncovered as fiction writers and the truth about his political agenda was made known. As a result, he was forced to leave in shame. Now for him to try to re-write history again is a mistake. He doesn't get two bites of the apple. We are aware of his campaign to undermine the values and traditions upon which our country was founded. He has no shame and is an embarassment to to the journalistic profession. The book is an attempt to elevate his low standing and to recover from the shame that has been heaped upon him. Shame on you howell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a good place to start
If you are a fly tyer of any sort and want to try your hand at traditional featherwing flys this is an excellent place to start. With enough hisorical background and excellent menus this volume gives in great detail methods to perform the traditional tasks as well as how to build the flys themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference Work
Distinguished by sharp colour photography and clean layout, this book ishighly recommended as a reference work for anyone interested in tying andpresenting the Classic Salmon fly. I enjoyed the chapter on hook making,(flashbacks to college metal work days), and having previously undertakensome picture framing, found the tips in the fly mounting chapter veryuseful. The colour photography of the Traherne collection and other patternspresented is excellent. The books contents will be of considerable use tobeginner and expert alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb Photographs and a well done presentation
Radencich has produced a work of art in this book. The photographs are outstanding, and there are not enough superlatives to do them justice. The steps are so well done as to present a short course in photos alone.Verywell done.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engle's friends & the lovely reed
This latest book on the wonders of the hand-crafted Bamboo Fly Rod and their makers is a survey of 17 (counting the Jenkins father & son team as two) men and their craft.
3-0 out of 5 stars bamboo book
Surveys only some of the better rodmakers - Brackett, Jennings, Jenkins and others - and describes test casting and action of each...Observations were interesting, but not much of a reference. This is not an updated reference book a la Marty Keane (which is thin also) but more of a musing through rodbuilding, action etc.The rodbuilding/collecting/fishing community is lacking a comprehensive reference of fine contemporary cane rods. This book helps but does not go far enough. Pictures are desired in this type of book but sadly are missing. Many of the chapters appeared in a small fly fishing journal out of Livingston in the past so you may have seen them before. And a piece by John Gierach, surprise, suprise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been better
Engle's book is an introduction to many of today's bamboo rod builders. The results of test casting each of the builders' rods seemed to run together as the descriptions of the actions were different but the meaning was the same. I am not sure I could pick a builder through these similar descriptions. The interviews about the builders' philosophies would serve one better. Overall, I thought the book was informative but with no color plates of the rods, the detailed descriptions lost much of their value. Still a good read. ... Read more

I'm not as cordinated as I was when I was younger and this book has many quick and easy to tie flys. It focuses on simplicity and flys that work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mariano, Martin, Koch & Holbrook and now Engle
There are a few really sound books that address tying small patterns.Vince Mariano's In the Ring of the Rise, Darrel Martin's Micropatterns, Holbrook & Koch's Midge Magic and now Ed Engle's Tying Small Flies.5-0 out of 5 stars Tying Flies for Spring Creeks and Tailwaters
This is a very nicely done book on small (size 20 and down) flies of the variety typically used for selective trout on tailwaters and spring creeks. It reviews familar patterns like RS2's for example, but has ample new material surveying hooks, fine threads and tying techniques.I like Ed's style of writing as it seems to convey years of experience fishing tiny dries for selective trout in a low key writing fashion.Fills a gap along the lines of a modern Koch's Fishing the Midge, only wider in scope and greater in detail. Will become a permanent part of my collection. This along with Lawson's Spring Creeks are a couple of recent "must haves"...... ... Among other things the perfect fish is about fly fishing for striped bass. The perfect fish was created by an artist and therefore has the quirkiness of something birthed from an artists mind.In it kenny gives us his opinions about how to tie flies and shows us that a fly is a little piece of art.He paints scenes of the predator1s world and the world of the baitfish. He intimates on many things, color and light being favorite topics, and relates those intimations to the act of fishing. His thinking is good thinking and it is unique thinking, in my opinion.Through his prose as well as his paintings, which decorate this colorful book, he implores us to agree with his belief that the striped bass is not just a stupid fish, but a perfect fish.Perhaps not everyone can see the magic of what Kenny is saying. The book is dense and by that I mean there1s a lot in there and some of it is pretty profound.A little must be read and then digested and read again, it is a book with which you must have patience.Perhaps kenny1s central theme concerns making flies that are impressions of what they are imitating as opposed to realistic imitations."What a fish responds or reacts to in a fly," kenny says, "is not exact physical likeness but the illusion of life."Kenny creates flies that give "impressions" of what the bait looks like and argues that impressionistic representations work better, catch more fish.As a painter myself I found some of kenny's philosophies to be helpful not only to my fly fishing but in considering the scope of my life. His thoughts involve stripping ourselves of "cultural conditioning" so we can more fully observe the world around us, perhaps with the innocence of a child."When tying squid flies," kenny says, "it is hard to resist emphasizing their tentacles or their eyes because it is how we have been taught to view them since childhood. When we see them as they actually appear in the water they are quite different than what cultural conditioning says they are." I liked this book when I first flipped through it because it reminded me of times I'd spent with my father pulling a drag net through the mouth of a tidal creek and seeing all the life there, all the shiners, mummichogs, and small green crabs. These crawling swimming things that had peaked my early curiosities while standing in the marsh are the food of the striped bass and are things that kenny portrays beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect fishing book
A perfect fish is a remarkable accomplishment.Kenny Abrames manages to smoothly meld fly-tying and flyfishing technique, with philosophy and art.The narrative is poetic yet descriptive. The art is alive. The flyfishinginformation is incredibly interspersed with thoughts on technique, andphilosophy.A book you can read and re-read and continue to gain insightand information. Its all there. Not a word or phrase is wasted.A mustfor any saltwater angler.

5-0 out of 5 stars When your cold and the water is angry, remember it's why.
When your standing in the water at sunrise and looking out over the horizon your saying to yourself, 'today is the day I'm going to remember what Kenny said in his book", Of course you don't because when youread carefully Kenny says, 'It's not how it's why you fish'.It's why wefish that he talks about in this wonderful account of his world and ours. When my grandson asks why I didn't catch any fish today or why I didn'tbring them home, I now know better my ans. Thanks, Kenny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical guide oriented towards major trans-sierra highways
I have just finished reading the new guide entitled Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada by Bill Sunderland, (Aguabonita Books, 1999).When I first heard about it I thought this was the last thing we needed, as Ralph Cutter haslong had the definitive guide to the High Sierra, now in its secondedition. However, upon reading the new work I see that the two arecomplementary.Basically Cutter's book assumed you would be backpacking into high country lakes; Sunderland's book assumes you will making theinitial approach by car, essentially along one of the many transsierrahighways. Thus the new book takes you up Interstate 80, US 50 andCalifornia 4 and 108 and tells you where to get off.Having spend decadescoming up these roads without a clue where to find good fishable streamsmakes the book worth its price immediately. Spending a lot of time inphotography myself, I could not help comparing the photographic content ofthe two works. Both are of top quality. Here Sunderland had considerablehelp, but I tire a bit long exposures of slow film on rushing streamsresulting in flowing milk rather than water.A little fill-flash would nothave hurt on some of the images. All in all, I found Cutter's photos andillustrations a small cut above.Cutter also spends 21 pages with detailedillustrations on "Trout food" to 4 pages by Sunderland. On the other hand, where Sunderland shines is the clear maps. There are sufficiently detailedmaps of all the major roads and access to the relevant waters. There werea couple I would have liked to learned even a bit more detail.Getting offon those Forest Service roads (where the locals seem to lisf the signs eachseason) is often an adventure without GPS.Yet, given the number ofanglers currently in California, a little obscurity for some streams willnot hurt.A nice touch by Sunderland is the extensive listings ofresources such as fly shops, camp grounds ranger stations for each section. In sum, Cutter is basically High Mountains and foot travel with a lot onbasic techniques.Sunderland is more stream-oriented and road travel, abit like a AAA guide. All in all, both books are complementary and worththe price. 5-0 out of 5 stars What every nature lover should know
I don't even fish, but I bought the book for the beautiful stories and photos. As I got into the book, I found out that it was so much more than a collection of stories and photos. There's info about navigation that everyone who hikes, wanders, fishes, hunts, or just loves nature should read. Do you know the steps to take if you're lost? Do you know how to navigate, whether it's light or dark? Don't you think you should? And you can with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLYbook that speaks to todays Flyfishing Experiance
Even if you have been fishing for Thirty years I gaurentee that this book will change; where, when and how you fly fish like no other. Professionals and recreational fly fishers alike will count this book a one of their most prized Fly fishing tools posessions. It is the only book on fishing that I have read cover to cover in one sitting. At times Trappers story telling had me laughing out loud, his tales speak to the reasons we love the sport, but most of all he is unparalelled in organizing and presenting a life time dedicated to flyfishing in a way that will de-mystify the reasonsfor succsess or failure and transformyour personal experiance of Fly Fishing in practical terms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Trapper knows solitude
I started flyfishing, alone, many years ago. I tie flies commercially and am a guide. Trapper has captured the essance of why we fish, and why, sometimes, why we NEED to be alone, male or female. I've known Trapper for MANY years and have swapped flies and lies... and MANY fun days on the river with him. Know this ....Trap's book captures WHY WE ARE WHO WE ARE. Knowing Trapper and his philosify has changed how I view the world and my perceptions in many ways!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lefty didn't forget us!
How to catch barramundi, trevally or milkfish?5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of useful information
I am a beginner in the sport of saltwater fly fishing.Lefty covers all the bases with the book.He explains choices of equipment.I was ready to hit the water after finishing this book in a few days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always the teacher
Lefty is a unique treasure for fly fishers. He is full of experience, eager to share it, and able to communicate his wisdom. Unlike more typical fly fishing writers who specialize in conveying mood and meaning, such as Lyons, Gierach, and Weatherell, Lefty's books make you want to be there because you are now armed with so much useful information. I can't wait to delve into ocean flyfishing for the first time. ... Read more
