4-0 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing Basics for Everyone
Darren Banasch has certainly done his homework for this little book published by Frank Amato Publications. Flyfishing is an individual sport that can be enjoyed by anyone at any age. This book will help to make the sport easier for any reader.Too often flyfishing writer get so technical that you loose interest in what they are writing simply because you can't understand it. Flyfishing is not rocket science. It is a sport for enjoyment, for outdoors, for husband and wife, for parents and children, for grandparents and grandchildren. A life sport. Darren begins with by saying this book is a guide that will answer many questions, goes on to a review of equipment, then how to fish with flies. Trout food tells you what they eat and what then goes on to link trout food with flies. One of the best linkups I've ever seen. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures/disappointing text
This is a good coffee table book for the armchair fisherman. The pictures are beautifully done and very artistic. The author does have some problems with his western geography. The Snake River and Gallatin River do NOT share the same drainage--they are on DIFFERENT sides of the Continental Divide. The author also mislabels a beautiful Snake River Cutthroat Trout as a brown trout--shameful.The text gets somewhat tedious--constantly reading about how early the author gets up, how little sleep he gets (give me a break, he's traveling around the west fishing with a different guide every day) and reading about all these gigantic fish that he makes pictures of but don't seem to end up in the book.I'm giving this book three stars for the quality of the paper and photographs and the places it takes me in my mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love all his books and recommend them
This is a book that is about the authors different fishing memories about fishing different types of water, from farm ponds, rivers and streams, lakes and the types of fish one is apt to find in each locale.5-0 out of 5 stars A really good book
The beginning was a little slow but it payed off. It ended up being the best book I ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever trout fished, this is a must !
Gierach has a wit and a love for nature like no one I have ever read. Every story he tells is not only an incredible experience, but most of the time a lesson well learned. As I read along, I found myself wanting to bestanding streamside with John,A.K.,and the rest of the boys.AlthoughGierach seems to have strong opinions, he doesn't come off as "I'mright cause I wrote the book." He is more of, "Here's what Ithink, you decide for yourself." Thanks John, keep em coming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the Art
Ernest Lussier was my beloved high school art teacher and I can say with confidence that the illustrations in this book alone make it worth buying. Miss you, Mr Lussier.

5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedia that's fun to read
John's Merwin has provided a work that can easily be treated as a reference book (for merely looking up some quick information) but is also enjoyable enough to read straight through. The whole book is sectioned offwell and is documented in such a way that the reader can quickly find anyinformation he/she may need (from tying blood knots to the recipe for ahare's ear nymph). You don't have to read the entire book to get yor moneyout of it. You can easily use it as a reference work for just looking upneeded fishing information. On the other hand, the book is quite enjoyableto read and is not like reading a dictionary. I'm an intermediate fisherwho has been actively fly-fishing for arond four years and I learned quitea bit from this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Northwest's famed diversity of fishing conditions and quarry requires a big fly box. To this end, members of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club have selected their 200 favorite flies, the culmination of 30 years of on-site research and creative tying. Old Northwest stand-bys make an appearance, like the March Brown, Skykomish Sunrise, and Yellow Sally, and more recent innovations like Kaufmann's Stimulator. While the sheer number precludes detailed tying instructions, clear color photographs and material ingredients aid the fly-tyer, and the wealth of entomological and angling information certainly makes this a welcome addition to the nontying fly-fisher's bookshelf as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars illustrated manual on all aspects of fly fishing
The visual elements of color photos of fishermen, flies, and fishes, and detailed illustrations of fly-fishing techniques discussed in many of the 34 chapters by expert fly fishermen make this fishing manual particularly informative as well as attractive. The four-page detailed Index in smaller print is another reason for the manual's particular relevance and usefulness for fishermen. The contents and writing evidence that the editor and the several authors know their prospective readers. With their identification with them, editor and authors know the challenges and questions on fly fishermen's minds, and also understand the allure and satisfactions of this sport. In "How Trout Feed," the editor in one of his articles advises readers, "If water temperatures rise above seventy degrees F. in summer, both insect hatches and trout feeding dwindle." Lou Tabory tells "How to Read a Beach" in salt-water fly fishing for bluefish. The first eleven articles are on the general subjects of casting and flies. Subsequent sections deal with fishing for trout, steelhead (salmon), and bass, with a closing section on salt-water fishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to cast correctly and fix what you're doing wrong
It's too bad that a book like this has to be written.Ed teaches the best method of fly casting there is, so if you read the first four pages and -> practice <- what he teaches, you'll rarely experience the 32 problems that he writes about in the rest of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars 77 Pages of Solid Gold
Ed Jaworowski's "Troubleshooting the Cast" is the most valuable (and nearly the least expensive) book in my rather substantial collection of flyfishing books. Since I bought it a few years ago I've advised everyone who has asked me about flyfishing to buy this book the same day they buy their first flyrod - or sooner. Even the most impatient person in The Republic would cherish this book because - whatever is going wrong with your cast - you can find it and fix it with this book in a matter of minutes. Once the flyboy (or flygirl) has used this book enough they will be able to "read the line" and knowing what's falling apart and how to correct it starts to become second-nature. Jaworowski's book makes it downright EASY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference for Anglers of Any Level
This was just the book I was looking for when I had been fly fishing for a while but started running into problems with my cast. This book anticipated all of them and provides easy solutions. Some casting books make it difficult to picture what they're doing with the rod, even with pictures. "Troubleshooting the Cast" lays it out clearly. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide
I found the book extremely informative. The reputation of the South Platte is that of a stream with very selective trout. This book saved me years of guesswork and research.5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented guide to trout fishing
Roger Hill's Fly Fishing The South Platte River: An Angler's Guide is a superbly presented and comprehensive guide to trout fishing on the Colorado's South Platte River. The aspiring angler is treated to an informative discussion of mayflies, caddisflies, and midges that must be imitated to fish the waters successfully. The text is enhanced with recipes for more than a dozen flies with tying variations specific to the South Platte; tips on equipment, information on the unique nature of the South Platte, and illuminating photographs. Fly Fishing The South Platte River is a "must" for anyone wanting to enjoy the adventure and thrill of fly-fishing the South Platte.

2-0 out of 5 stars In need of an update and better graphics
The material is a bit dated. Can you say Two Forks dam~!I was greatly disappointed in the minimal discussion on the specific sections of the river. His discussion on the flies and such was quite good, but I really wanted something with a bit more depth talking about the various stretches and the different type of entomology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for getting your feet wet with fly fishing
Mel Krieger's book is the perfect book for anyone wanting to get their feet wet in fly fishing. It's not overly technical so even beginners such as me could benefit from Krieger's practical and lucid advice. But more than that, the author's enthusiasm and the beautiful photographs inspire so that the book not only gives you clear, step by step advice on technique but also gets you jazzed up about this most poetic pastime.Read more
