    Editorial Review

You know the saying: Give a man (or woman) a fish, and you give him dinner; teach a man (or woman) to fish and he'll have dinner for the rest of his life. The always entertaining and instructional "... for Dummies" series reeled in witty outdoors writer Peter Kaminsky to keep the rest of us fed--as in food for the table and food for thought--with this step-by-step guide to pretty much every right and obtuse angle on angling. As with all the books in the series, Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only A Good Book for the Absolute Beginner--not a reference
While I am usually quite pleased with the "for dummies" type of books because they are truly a "reference for the rest of us," this one does not deliver on the latter promise. While it is fun to readand easy to understand, I learned nothing from reading this and I am only a casual fisherman at best, going on what my dad taught me over 25 years ago when I was just a boy. I think if you had no idea what you were doing at all this might be a good "get started" book, but if you know what a rod and reel are and how they work, how hooks and lines are gauged and how to hook your bait, I don't think this book will teach you very much. It also introduces a lot of new things to the beginner (such as telling you what the basic types of lures are), but tells you nothing in terms of tips for catching fish any better with these items.
3-0 out of 5 stars the basics
This book will teach you the basics and answer some questions that you might have had about fishing. This is a good reference book that goes into enough detail to get anyone started fishing.

4-0 out of 5 stars They aren't 'poles' anymore
Regardless of whether you don't know the difference between a fly rod and a cane pole, or whether you not only know the differences but you've made your spouse learn about them, there's a place on your book shelf for Casting A Spell. George Black's investigative trail took him all over the country on a merry chase after the fly fishing equivalent of the Holy Grail: the perfect bamboo fly rod. Is there a piscatorial equivalent to the Stradivarius? George is convinced the best were from the hands of Eustis William Edwards, and he goes on to show the reader that the excellence that began in the mid 1800's flourished under the stewardship of makers like Billy Edwards as the new century began. Fly fishing in America certainly didn't start with A River Runs Through It and today the bamboo fly rod is alive and well as the new generations of rod crafters strive to create the next Strad. There are good reasons why the bamboo rod has enjoyed a renaissance in recent decades and when you've finished this book you'll understand both the craftsmen and their customers a bit better. This is a good read from an investigative writer with a proven track record in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Casting a Spell
I myself am a maker of bamboo rods, so I may be somewhat prejudiced, but Casting a Spell cast a spell over me.Black has caught the spirit of our craft in his telling of the story of the development of the fine bamboo fly rod and the people involved in making them from the late 19th century until the present. He begins at the beginning-- that is, with H. L. Leonard and the group of marvelous rod makers who worked with him in the late 19th century. This core group of rod makers served as the wellspring of all bamboo rod making in the United States.Eustace Edwards, Fred Thomas, Edward Payne and the Hawes Brothers, and of course, Hiram Leonard himself.-- though each of them had distinct personalities, they all had one thing held in common; a drive for perfection.

4-0 out of 5 stars The lovely Reed
This is clearly the best of the current crop of rod building books. It could do with an index (ther isn't one!), updates on components (The Golden Witch, Bellingers - he carries **everything**, not just reel seats), and additional information on critical processes (straightening glued up rods, filing, scraping, sanding a blank, wrapping, etc.). Overall, though, if you are going to build a first rod this ought to be your first purchase!

4-0 out of 5 stars The most current book on bamboo rod making
Bamboo rod making is one of those crafts with enough twists in the road that most first-timers want as much up-to-date information as they can get before they start. The Lovely Reed ("LR") is both possibly the best single reference on the subject, and the most generally useful book if you are only reading one.4-0 out of 5 stars The modern Bibel for Rodmakers after Garisson
Well, Howelss Book is a must for todays Rodmakers and all lovers of the split cane rods! Shue, he tells not much new in the craftmanship of bamboo rodbuilding, but he shows ( a lot of photos)a simple way to build your own rod. He`s way is noth much another than Garrison describe, but Howells Way is a synthese of old and new formulas! Exelent written and have also a look at his informative taper-section! Better buy the book now - most better books about the rodbuilding are fast out of print! Mabye Howell created the new rodmakers bible?!Read more

Extremely informative and packed with lots of information in an easy to digest format. As a begining spearfisherman I found this book extremely helpfull. It does not go into long stories to explain information, but just gives it to you upfront.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction
This is a great introduction to spearfishing, also works as a great reference for other books such as Rapture of the Deep.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete book for beginners

    Editorial Review

Hook-and-bullet adventures had by tough guys such as Teddy Roosevelt and Papa Hemingway may be out of favor inthese times of eco-awareness, but Peter Hathaway Capstick's account of big-game hunting in Africaremains a classic. With humor, grace, and supreme tension, Capstick takes the reader on safari, eloquentlystating his case for blood sport while portraying the intensity of the hunt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Capstick was the master story teller of a passing era.
Peter Capstick was capable of capturing the spirit and danger of the hunt like no other author in recent history.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Africa Before This One.
There was an Africa before this one. Before the continent was torn apart by war, AIDS and poaching. Before elephants and other exotic species were slaughtered to the point of endangerment. Before Africa was one big, hopeless charity case in the sense of both it's wildlife and it's people there was Peter Capstick's Africa. While reading this book let go of what you think you know about endangered species on that continent and let go of your judgement about hunting there. Because otherwise you're really missing out.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thriller
This book is a good read for people who can tolerate some blood and gore. Scenes of animals killing people and people killing animals have been very graphically described. At times you cannot agree with the author when he tries to justify the killing of animals just for kicks and to collect trophies. I have never set foot in a jungle, so I cannot be a judge about such matters, but I sometimes felt that the author is bluffing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Effort
I've had this book for several years and I've found it to be a very useful resource. The hatch charts are extremely helpful, especially for trout anglers. While the author made a better than average attempt to cover the warmwater opportunities in the Keystone State, for the most part only the most well known sites were covered. While Pennsylvania has some world famous trout streams, the variety and quality of our warmwater fisheries is truly extraordinary. Some of the streams that were covered specifically for the trout they hold probably offer better bass fishing over most of their length.Trout centered thinking is far too common in the fly fishing community and as a result this sort of overemphasis on trout is typical of many fly fishing guides.Indeed, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission is guilty of killing thousands of trout annually by stocking them in waters so warm they are sure to die by Memorial Day.I know that Mr. Wolf is a skilled and avid warmwater fly fisher.I hope in the future he will update this guide and give our warmwater fisheries the coverage they deserve.

3-0 out of 5 stars flyfisher's Guide to Pennsylvania by Dave Wolf
If you are looking for a book to give you general knowledge on better known trout fishing streams in Pennsylvania, then this book will meet your needs.Unfortunately, the author does not do a good job of covering remote streams in many parts of the state that are excellent producing streams and beautiful places to fish.I was especially disappointed in his lack of coverage of streams in McKean and Warren County.I would not recommend this book to an avid Pennsylvania fisherman. The book is adequate for an out-of-state fisherman who is looking to fish some of the more popular streams in PA.

I finally got a chance to use this great book last week. I had taken a fly tying class earlier this year and couldn't remember how to tie a couple of flies. The book is well written and gives precise instructions - with pictures - on how to tie each and every fly. The instructions are easy to follow. This is a must have for any person who ties flies!!

Collectively compiled and authored by fly fishing experts Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying is an impressive collection of fly recipes, tying steps, and techniques. Guiding readers through a compendium packed from cover to cover with professional, in-depth information on the artistic nature of fly fishing, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying provides a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to color blending, knot tying, hook measurements, fly proportions, threads and materials. A core addition to any dedicated fly fishing reference collection, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying is very strongly recommended as the ultimate illustrated guide for the fly fishing enthusiast from novice to veteran.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!!!
This is probably one of the most enjoyable books I have read in the last five years. The author and his cohorts are definitely brave, almost certainly missing a few screws and possibly suicidal, but they enjoy what they are doing so much that after a while the insanity of it all doesn't seem to matter. Stories about divers diving with football helmets so they don't get knocked out on the steel beams of the oil rig and the stalking of sharks (!!) in the opaque murk at the bottom of the sea floor would seem farcical or just stupid coming from almost anyone else, but when Fontova writes it is riveting, believable and also hilarious.

    Editorial Review

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good Book
For any one interested in tying any of Bob Clouser's flies this is the perfect book. The hints contained in this book allowed me to tie much better flies

5-0 out of 5 stars "Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book.
"Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book. The writing is clear and concise, the photographs are excellent, and the chapters are well thought-out. This book is mandatory for the fly-tying beginner to the advanced tier, and for those of you that are interested in the versatile Clouser Fly and streamer fishing. Clearly this is the best book produced on tying the Clouser Fly; understandably so, it is written by the person who first developed the fly. On a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest rating, this text is a 5. In Brief, this book is a must purchase for your fly-tying library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any serious tier
It has been a long time since I read a book with such detail. Not only are the directions and explainations to the point, but the photographs are supurb and eliminate any questions that usually arrise due to lenghtly explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great How-to Book for Fly Fishing
This is one of the best books for introducing anyone to the sport of fly fishing, whether the angler wants to shop for equipment at Orvis or Wal-Mart. The information is clearly explained without going into tedious details that novices (and experienced anglers) don't want. Everything is covered here--from rod types to fly lines to casting basics. The excellent graphics are helpful--especially of the knots. Some books have knot instructions that are impossible to follow--"knot" so here! For someone who wants to start fly fishing, this book would make a great start. My only complaint is that the book came out almost 20 years ago; it's time for a new edition. . . . I just read that there's a new edition coming out in a few months. Maybe you want to pre-order that edition. And while you're waiting for that, pick up the "L.L.Bean's Handbook to Fly-Fishing" (color illustrations) and Schreiber's novel, "Life on the Fly."

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, excellent source for beginners
you'll find all the info you need to start flyfishing here.fly's, rods and casting as best you can get from a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Easy to Read
Tom Rosenbauer clearly and concisely covers the basics that a beginning fly fisher needs to know: from the basic gear to casting, to knots to reading trout streams, you will find he covers the basic questions beginners have well.Tom's writing style is fluid and enjoyable which makes learning all the more fun. It's the best book I have read on the basics of fly fishing; after reading it you will certainly feel like you have enough knowledge to get out there and start catching fish.As far as I am concerned, you cant go wrong with any book by Tom! ... I bought this bought this book because I do respect Ted Haggard ministry and his books. After reading the book, I bought another 2 for my pastors. By the time I wrote this review I bought another 10 books for friends in ministry. I do think that this book is a great resource for anybody that want to grow his church

1-0 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch
Despite this book's title, the author provides no useful information regarding the art of angling with flies, and readers seeking advice on fishing the waters of Colorado, where the author lives, should look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, insightful, and thought-provoking.
This book blows the doors off of mainstream accepted taboos in our culture. After personally experiencing the highs and lows of traditional cell-based groups, I was at a point of wondering why change was not being made in churches. Then, I came across this book. In it, Ted delightfully shows how a church can face change and come out of it truly blessed. Thanks so much for sharing your results, and your honesty! We are all blessed, because of it. I exhort other churches to openly test their waters and see if this book and what it presents can be applied in their congregations. And... as we all know... this book, and the concepts it speaks of... will evolve as they continue to understand the power of God more fully in their midst. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Who really cares about trout?
Richard Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America could have been a real classic for the ages. That is, it could have been a classic if it wasn't about trout fishing and if it wasn't written by Richard Brautigan.Brautigan seems directionless as usual here, leaping haphazardly from one place in time to another.Just when he comes up with an interesting line or word, he seems to forget about it and leave you hanging while he goes off to some other world. His writing is the equivalent of sitting in a chair under a tree drinking MD 20/20, suddenly falling onto your back, and then staring up at the leaves and wishing that it all meant something quite profound. And that is where the problem lies--Brautigan wants the grander themes and ideas of the world to be expressed in his books, but he never does the legwork to get you there. You feel teased after reading his poems, like a girl who says she'd like to date you, then leaves you to go swimming at the YWCA, and you never hear from her again.Do you see where I'm going here? You can't make lemonade out of a sourpuss.Brautigan never gave it his best shot, and unfortunately, he left the world without having said very much to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars He heard the sound of his own drummer
The man is no longer here so its necessary to give him the benefit of the doubt.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dear Zik, I Lied: I Really Hated This Book But Didn't Have The Heart To Admit It
Brautigan was a very weird man. I understand he went on to take his own life. That's a shame, but honestly I can kind of see the suicidal mindset in him if the man he writes about in the first-person in these is a real reflection of how he truly thought. He was a grouch and mean-spirited to the people around him. He clearly thought he was smarter than everybody else and his writings show he probably wasn't. A lot of people say this book is original but it's not, it's more like...typical midling-talent hack writing with countercultural, back-to-earth themes. He wanted to shock and tease and praise a simple life all at once and be non-tactfully frank about certain things to the point of grossness, and that's not my cup o' tea. Other than the poignant "childhood Kool-Aid" piece, the only part I liked in any of these books was in "Trout Fishing" when Brautigan caught a humpbacked fish whose odd manner of swimming he compared to Lord Byron's limp. Even that wasn't spectacular. Also, his wife should have left him over all the mean things he said about her. She must've been a saint to put up with him. I honestly don't see why any of these books make for good reading. They're a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's not here, you don't need to know it
I have checked out at least 30 books from our city and county library systems on saltwater fishing from all over the country on inter-library loan. None were as good as this one! This is the only book that has the hooks, rigs, lures and knots associated with a particular type of fishing in their own section. This is extremely helpful compared to pages of unassociated graphics. The photographs (and there are plenty of them) are all in color and the paper is a high quality gloss matte. There are pencil graphics of techniques. The sections on cleaning and cooking your fish are outstanding with a few recipes thrown in. Each type of fish is identified with the bait to use, method of catch, where to catch them and what equiipment to use. Good water-resistant cover. Can't go wrong with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handbook for Sucessful Angling
This book is full of information that will help put you and your friends into some good fishing. The information ranges from fishing on rental boats in a small saltwater bay to offshore trips for big gamefish and even provides recipes for your catch from Milt's lifelong fishing companion and wife, June. One of the highlights of the book is the use of photography chronicling histactics as a "jetty jock" in order to land the coveted lunker Striped Bass that cruise the Northeast coast every April to December from the Cheasapeake bay, Virginia to New England. There are even some photos revealing his commitment toteaching and imparting his fishing "know how" to his grandaughters on small skiffs.Rosko has been fishing for more than 60 years and he has culled the best of his knowledge gained over six decades into this 288 page handbook for successful angling! He covers all the coasts but is especially strong in his homegrown territory, the Northeast coast. It makes a great gift for someone who has a passion for fishing or a budding gift for fishing. I bought one for me and one for my newest fishing disciples. ... Read more

just a quick word about this wonderful book: within two months of reading it, and having never fly-fished a day in my life, i took 23 creel-size trout in two days from Helton Creek, North Carolina. this book guided me throug the purchase of all my equipment, and instructed me on all the techniques in using it. in the nine months since i first read this book i have caught all three species of trout, countless pan fish, crappies, small- and large-mouth bass, and one baracudda. i highly recomend it to anyone interested in fly-fishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I'm reading this book right now and I love it!I used to read his articles years ago in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Sports Afield and I'd forgotten what a fine writer he was. I like the way he tells good stories while he's taking fishing and even though I can't yet get to some of the places he's writing about, he sure makes me want to be there. This is the sort of book that a book lover will enjoy and a book lover who is also a fly fisher will especially enjoy every bit of it! My husband, Tom, who is a writer himself, also has read it and is every bit as keen on it as I.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Southern Fisherman
This book is listed as 368 pages. Thankfully there were only 349. I thought I was reading a novel. Each chapter began with a verbose, and usually self backpatting, 4-5 page introduction of the authors personal conquest while fly fishing. It took me so long to read, that I was out of time to return it. I sincerely believe the "meat" of this book could have been communicated in less than 200 pages, and probably less than 100 if color photos(other than the 10 pages in the center of the book that were of no benefit) were used. Actually, few photos of the "how to" were shown, the sketches carried most of the weight. Most of the black-and-white photos were of an already caught fish that bolstered the authors standing with his audience. L.L.Beans books are done and offer more info. Let's cut to the chase so that we can get back on the water. I would not recommend to beginner of advanced fishermen. I think that any book that includes fly tying or pictures of fishing flies commands color photos. How many fishing lures have you ever bought from a black-and-white catalog? ... Read more
