4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I fished quite a bit growing up, but got away from it while in college. Recently I wanted to get back into it, so I needed some more grown-up gear. This book was quite valuable in helping me figure out what equipment I needed and what I didn't. The author's reccomendations of what lures to buy were especially helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still in print means something
I was searching for another fishing book when I saw that Cliff Hauptman was still in print.Even though I was not a total novice, I learned a lot from this book. And panfishermen should note that this is practically the only book that addresses crappies, bluegills and like that.

I found this book one of the most inspirational books for a carver that is interested in wildfoul carving. My friends that do not carve enjoyed the book for the pictures and history.I would definitely suggest it to anyone,it makes a good coffee table and reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Want To Know. And Much Much More
I found this book extremely useful and entertaining. It doesn't speak down to you or use terms that I wouldn't use. It's not a cheap book, but once you purchase it you find that you got what you paid for! Great for people just getting started as well as the hardcore fisherman.Buy this book for yourself or as a present and you will be glad you did.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is thebest
The book 'Fishing Encyclopedia'by Ken Schultz is the best around. Globally the information can be used to learn many things that Anglers ought to know. This is the best book I have ever read. Must read for anyone interested in fishing

4-0 out of 5 stars Sea bream or river bream
It's a great encyclopedia, very good, but about photos or pics that identified the fish is 2 stars, it is correct because that is not a fish encyclopedia but a fishing encyclopedia, and I ask where are the photos of rods, reels, lines, baits etc., they are there but very few, in suma to much to read.e.g. The cantonense name "HAK LAP" (page 245 - The river bream (Acanthopagrus berda) is a prominent...) is only one of a kind that we have here, and translated to english means BLACK BREAM, and it is a black bream but fished at the river, but this is only the common name, so I don't know the correct name of HAK LAP is ACANTHOPAGRUS BERBA (river bream)or ACANTHOPAGRUS BUTCHERI (black bream). Anyway they are a big family, like HAK LAP(balck bream), WONG KEOK LAP (Yellowfin bream), PAK LAP (silver bream), KAM SI LAP, KAI KONG LAP, HAK SA LAP,(the last 3 are only from this region) this are the most common fish (breams) that I saw around here. So this book is not enough for me. About the book I thing all people that like to fish must have it, because no one can tell you more than the book, and all the book are your best friend, it will not say NO to you when you like to read it, right! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
Massad Ayoob provides an excellent overview of combat shooting. He covers the latest techniques, equipment and accessories. In addition, Ayoob does a good job of discussing most of the controversies: revolver vs. pistol, SA vs. DA, stock vs. modified, point shooting vs. aimed fire, etc...
3-0 out of 5 stars informative, although too much on competition
This book covers a lot more competitive shooting, (haven't finished the book, so I gave it a 3) so far than self-defense and handgun tactics. However, there is a lot of information about handguns, and I think it will get more interesting as it goes on. Since I've never shot a handgun, I bought this book in hopes of giving me some basics so I can use this to help me train when I do go to the range. Since I don't know much about guns, I'd say this book does a good job of giving me an idea of what's going on and proper ways of shooting. Very informative. Again, I would've given the book a 5 star rating, but I haven't finished it. One bad thing is, the book seems SOOOOO old, kinda disappointed in the paper quality. But I believe if i finished the book, I would've given it a 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Useful Info
This book not only covers the various aspects of handgun selection, but also the many ways to use it effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK to read if you want to learn to fly fish!
Twenty years ago I bought "Fly Fishing For Trout", the previous incarnation of this book (from a different publisher) and it made me a fly fisherman.I've already been through three copies of the present (expanded, revised, updated) edition, as the people I lend it to never return it.3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book, but not great
As I'm writing this, I see it's out of stock from the publisher. The reason I'm still bothering to write a review is to make you feel a little better if you're dying to find it.I noticed it got rave reviews incertain circles.I've wondered if these were friends of Talleur's, or ifhe simply has a good reputation.I'm an intermediate flyfisherman, and Ireally didn't find this book as useful as I hoped. It's a *good* book, just not a *very* good book.I found the chapter on leader constructionquite useful. The book seems to assume that you'll be fishing during ahatch on classic trout waters. This is only a slight exaggeration, butlet's face it - the vast majority of trout flyfishing done in this countryis not during the Hendrickson hatch on a calm pool on the Beaverkill.Thechapters on casting and rod/reel selection are only mediocre (although I'veread better casting instruction, most equipment discussions in books seemsto be mediocre.)So that leaves the fishing. And I can't help butnoticing a subtle bit of arrogance in Talleur's writing, as if he seems tobe saying "This is a great book."I can't put my finger on why. I would have to recommend other books for the fishing aspect, such asRosenbauer's excellent "Prospecting for Trout" or Humphrey'sslightly off-beat "On the Trout Stream".I have glanced atKreh's "Presenting the Fly" and that may be a real winner - we'llsee! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Way too technical
This book was thoroughly disappointing.Provided OK information, but was entirely too technical in its approach. If you do not have a Ph.D. in biology then do not bother with this book, you will not understand it.

4-0 out of 5 stars compact reef guide
It should be rated at 5 stars but I give only 4 stars because of its technical nature and my beginner's comprehension. After that, it is a compact guide full of useful, hands-on info that helps the hobbyist create their own ideal aquarium environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars No common name references
Don't get me wrong, this book is good, however... while reading the book, it uses mostly the scientific names for everything. It would be nice if after the scientific name, it has a common name in parenthesis, you know, using the names the fish stores use.Other than that, it is a decent book. ... Editorial Review

As adept as Thomas McGuane has been through the years with a rod in his hand, he's even more skillful with his pen. Join the two like tippet to leader, and the result's as irresistible as a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear in the middle of a Hendrickson hatch. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars smooth and satisfying
I am adding The Longest Silence to my list of favorite books on the subject of fly fishing.I do believe that some thoughts are too deep for words. But McGuane's words dive deeper than any book I've ever read.I admit, as a life long Michigan resident, that the first chapter based on the Pere Marquette River hooked me.But, as I read I realized that whether he wrote about Michigan, or Montana, or Argentina that the location is notwhat it's all about. It's about the long silent moments.Everything else "has nothing to do with the necessity but rather with the elaboration of the dream that is fishing".

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best about the silence and joy of fly fishig
Over the past 20 years I have fished great rivers, streams and oceans. True, this isn't about how to be an expert fly fisherman but more about how to appreciate the sport. The author captivates you from the start and gives a very personal touch to a very personal place and time. For those who have never tried or experienced fly fishing a stream in a secluded area or watched nature announce the arrival of salt water fish, this is a must read. Compared to many of the great writers on the subject, and there are many, this writer raises the bar and leaves you wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The examined life (and fly fishing, too).
Well crafted, clean prose.A delight and a high spot in this year's reading. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Comment of Review below
Obviously the book did not recieve a good rating, I have not read it. But please dont be as stupid as the person who wrote the comment below. He's wondering about buoyancy control? When free diving you wear weights, that is about the only buoyancy control, you cannot keep adjusting it like a BC vest when Scuba diving. And how about a suggestion for how many weights on your belt has too many variables. Do you dive in cold waters with a wetsuit or in warm waters with only surf shorts and t-shirt? How thick is the wetsuit you wear (3mm or 7mm)? How much do you weigh? How deep are you diving (the deeper you are the more buoyant you are)? So obviously this guy did not have one clue about free diving or spearfishing, which is fine but he cant expect to find all of the answers in one book. For the shooting range of a speargun, it is usually three times the length of the gun (i.e. if the gun is 5ft. long it will shoot approx. 15ft.) Is it better to go spearfishing during high or low tide was another complaint that was not in the book for him. Where does he live geographically? What is the tidal range in his area? I think he is looking for a book that is specifically designed to him and his geographical area and personal needs. What size fish will certain guns yeild? Give me a break. You can catch a 100lb fish with a 3ft gun if you have the right equipment and are good. You can put 400lb test line on your gun if you want but you may only be shooting 5lb fish. So if you dont have a clue about spearfishing you have to search more than one source just like writing a research paper in college.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of questions without the answer
The book is easy to read, but you might not like the schoolbook layout with the review questions in each chapter.2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
I was quite dissapointed. To many instructions on how to buy hunting gear but only few good hunting tips. The handbook looks more like school book. I had to wait to find that out more than one mounth and the end price for book and taxes and shipping to Europe came out 45$. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeney's Books are the best
Pat Sweeney writes the best overall book for the firearms industry. His attention to detail and articulation is some of the best work when it comes to general firearms knowledge. The only other book that covers the Glock this well is the Ptooma Guide to the Glock. This book in comparison to the Ptooma book, well that is kind of hard. Sweeney writes as a general knowledge book, while the Ptooma book was written by guys that LOVE Glocks. Sweeney is a 1911 and revolver man, But who wouldn't trust the word of someone that took 3rd place in World Shoot XIV in Standard Revolver? I think he knows what he is talking about. You need a Glock book? Look no further. You found it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author should stick to writing about the 1911
My review on this one is going to be a bit more critical than most. This is probably one of the worst books on Glock pistols that I have read to date. The author is constantly comparing Glocks to 1911's, and other types of pistols. The book is also loaded with plenty of non-Glock images. Mr. Sweeney, I bought this book because I like the Glock, not because I wanted to see plenty of photos of 1911's... ad nauseam. Perhaps Mr. Sweeney should stick to books writing books like his "Gun Digest Book of the 1911", as he has done Glock more than a bit of injustice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but lacking
I made the mistake of actually reading the book, rather than skim it or use if for reference. Mr Sweeney is an accomplished gunsmith with years of experience with the 1911 and the Glock. Although he provides a lot of good information on the Glock, it becomes obvious that he truly admires the 1911. Having another, commonly used firearm to use as a reference for comparison is a good thing. But there are many times that the 1911 comes up without benefit to the topic.

This book is of little value to the serious gun buyer/seller and gives only a rough approximation of a small number of guns in the world.I strongly suggest you instead choose the 25th edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values or the 2004 edition of the Standard Catalog of Firearms. Both have much more detailed information than Gun Trader's Guide in terms of number of guns, conditions, variants, prices, and other useful reference info. The Standard Catalog also has a lot of photos, while the Blue Book has almost none. The Standard Catalog and the Blue Book are what the dealers use in pricing used guns.Either is far better than Modern Gun Values, in my opinion, and I have been a gun hobbyuist for 40+ years. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Old? New? Sidelocks? Boxlocks? Help!
The book has a lot of history, and is very informative on the history of double guns, and especially detailed in that of American heritage, I read a substatial amount about auto ejectors which I understand, twisted bore and smooth bore, pretty much self explainable, but exactly what is a sidelock, what is a boxlock? How do they differ? Old or new which way is the way to go? I look forward to buying a few doubles and using them. Obviously I do not need a $10,000, or even a $15,000 plus double, but I would like one I could use in the field and have something of value down the road in the next 20 or 30 plus years. I think a few informative drawings and discriptions a little more of the understanding of the workings and parts in detail would be benefical. I am not new to firearms for I have a found respect of them and their uses in more than a few areas but doubles are fairly new to me, and with that, new terminology and parts are hard to understand without knowing what to look for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Work
More McIntosh.I don't know who has the definitive work on shotguns, but this one must be close.Especially loved the section on spagetti shotguns.I can tell you up front that, for American guns,he prefers Foxes, but if you have read his works, you already know that.4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Review of High-Grade Shotguns
I agree with the reviewer from Seattle -- this book is strictly about high-grade shotguns such as Parker, L.C. Smith, Fox, the Winchester 21 and many others, and has nothing to do with handguns.Overall it's a good book for this type of shotgun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone just getting into inline Muzzleloading
This is excellent book for both the beginner and experienced Muzzleloader.Photography is excellent. The bullet selection is a bit dated, but if you go to www.muzzloadingforum.com you can get the latest scoop.Excellent overview of inline ML.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate In-Depth Comparison of In-Line Muzzleloaders
When I first received this book I couldn't put it down.It is a complete, unbiased well laid-out analysis of modern inline muzzleloaders. I was particularly impressed with the ratings they provided on a variety of products.Extremely thorough, taking far more into consideration than just accuracy.I brought it over to our gun club so other blackpowder enthusiasts could enjoy it, and I literally have a list of people wanting to borrow this book. But I guarantee that you won't want to loan this beautiful hard cover book to anyone. This beautifully illustrated book is truely a piece of art suitable for the den or library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking the truth
Col. Cooper is a man of strong convictions. That is refreshing in an age when most think We should never offend anyone else. Read this book and see what a real man is like.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is for anyone
This is not a "Gun Book" though it certainly contains a hefty amount of gun info in it.It is just a good book, by the man who literally changed the way police officers train in this country. (If you have ever seen a cop hold a gun with two hands, thank Cooper for it)
