4-0 out of 5 stars Aquarium Ecosystems
While best known for describing the use of turf algae as a natural absorber of aquarium pollutants, the book 'Dynamic Aquaria' shines as a plea for the re-evaluation of how we appreciate aquarium systems and theirmicro-ecologies. Rather than the display of just a few select specimens, itproposes more emphasis on (and therefore replication of) the fascinatinginteractions between species and environment. It does a splendid job ofdiscussing the difficulties in scaling down nature's beauty to fit anaquarium's limited volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent groundbreaking work on natural aquariums
This book explores aquarium systems as models of natural eco systems. Adeyand Loveland's technique relies on algae scrubbers to reduce nitrate levels in the tank.By removing new growth of algae, one can avoid frequent water changes. The book includes extensive discussion ofimportant aspects of marine eco systems, such as wave motion, light, and food chains, to name just a few. 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice place to start
If you have been out on a charter fishing trip or just watched fisherman on the pier and have asked yourself, "What in the heck are they doing?" this book is for you. This book answers the most basic questions on saltwater fishing tactics. After reading this book and understanding its content, you will cover about 80% of what you need to know. The other 20% is just plain experience. This is a GREAT book for your kids who just discovered that fishing bug. Not a bad Father's Day gift for the greenhorn either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great
Overall, this is a pretty good book. It covers a lot of basic as well as more advanced techniques. The information is up to date, well written, with good photos and illustrations. The only thing that can be improved is more detail on more species. The book covers about 20 specific species and everyone will find something of value. Included are inshore, surf, pier, jetties, blue water, bottom, and shallow water species. Unfortunately, each species is limited to about 3-4 pages of information. A bigger book with more information on each species would make this a great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so
Alot of hype about this book, personnaly its alot of common sense, you would better of subscribing to the magazines and gathering information from there as opposed to getting it all doucmented in one book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Manly pursuits in the last frontier of the United States
I first handed this off to the hunter-male of the house. "Wild Men, Wild Alaska" met with his complete approval. "Great set of short stories" was his terse reply. While not an in-depth review, I feel you can confidently gift any manly men in your life with this excellent set of 14 short stories or essays about life in Alaska.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Armchair Adventure Opportunity . . . and Room for Helpful Reflection
Wild Men, Wild Alaska is the best hunting and fishing book I've ever read. Hemingway's great novels about hunting and fishing fall short of Rocky McElveen's impressive real life experiences. If you've never been to Alaska, this book will call you there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable title for veterinarians
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry.Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences.Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques.Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars fishing basics is a great book
fishing basics is one of those books that every fisherman/women should have. although the book covers the basics, it is well thought out and the illistrations are awesome. it covers every type of fishing. from boat to ice fishing. it also has great sugestions for fishing for any fish. even if you are a fishing export (which i'm not by any means) it's good to have a book on the basics. i highly recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could have only one Fishing Book
This is the best fishing publication I have bought in during my 46 years of fishing. Everything and I mean everything you need to know to fish is in this book. Don't let the price fool you. I have paid much more for fishing books but this is the best I have ever found. Pro's and Beginners will benefit. People ages 9 to 90 can use this great fishing book. I wish I had found it when I was 9!

Editorial Review

The name L. L. Bean is acknowledged as being the tops in outdoor gear. This handbook justifiably bears that brand. A handsomely illustrated Text enhanced with photographs, Dave Whitlock's book covers the Zen of fly fishing, the craft or how-to, the strategies for various fish, how to "read" both fish and stream, and describes the art of tying various flies, and the latest in fly- fishing attire. Whitlock addresses both fresh- and saltwater considerations, the ethics of fishing, and has compiled an excellent list of publications and organizations of interest to the fisher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to Start Your Fly Fishing
Whitlock's book is one of the best (the other being Rosenbauer's Orvis book) introductions to the sport of fly fishing. The Whitlock illustrations are always great, and the information is top-notch. You will find out everything you need from fly lines to fly rods to knots to basic flies. Don't be fooled by the "L.L.Bean" title--it nowhere promotes their products. An excellent book overall. As an added note, the L.L. Bean Fly-Fishing Bass Handbook is mostly a rehash of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An "if you could have only One" book
This is Prime Whitlock - and he is good. If you bought only one "How to git 'er done" flyfishing book, ever, you couldn't go wrong with the L.L. Bean Flyfishing Handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's guide
After reviewing dozen of books, I decided to purchase and use this as my primary self-teaching tool.Surprisingly, I was able to learn the basics of casting from this book.I did get some instruction but was too eager to wait for that route.Once I showed up for a lesson, I was told my cast was quite impressive for a beginner; that was the result of this book.I also initially had qualms with the what-I-thought were overly complicated knots given as examples for connecting flies, leaders, tippets, etc. However, after losing several flies, leaders, and tippets from using other knots, I have followed the advice in the book with significantly more success.Overall, I would say there is no better introduction to this wonderful and satisfying hobby. After reading it, you can safely walk in to your local fly shop without feeling like an idiot.Highly reccomended. After reviewing dozen of books, I decided to purchase and use this as my primary self-teaching tool. 1-0 out of 5 stars This could be a much better book
Hopefully, Ron Arra will write another book with more competent guidance. He is a great surfcaster and fisherman, but there are problems with this disappointing book. The main shortcoming is dreadful illustration -- the pictures reproduced on cheap paper are photographed from the wrong perspective with the wrong lighting. The drawings are sparse. You simply cannot see the fishing rod and line position that are the subjects and purpose of the illustrations. Because the book is billed as "Complete Instructions for Longer Casting..." you would expect an A-B-C guide to surfcasting.Other useful information may be ferreted out of what reads more like edited taped interviews of fishing advice and yarns illustrating how to fish. That is not all bad -- you may learn a few tricks as you re-read this opposite-of-a-textbook.If one looks beyond the sparse drawings and bad pictures, one can garner some good tips that may come in handy. Two things learned from reading the book over and over, trying to absorb the wisdom therein: you can cast very far if you know what you are doing, and the Eastern Seaboard has some great surf fishing.I am in in the Pacific Northwest where surf fishing mostly results in tasty perch.I was hoping I might find some wisdom that would reveal there are bigger fish that prey on those perch in that very same surf. This is an East Coast book that needs serious revision. This is a little weird as Lamiglas in Western Washington State makes a terrific line of Ron Arra rods. They need to buy him a Washington fishing license and finance a few months of surf fishing research.I believe there is a hidden fishery that Ron Arra could uncover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Awesome Info!
As a fisherman of nearly 20 years I figured there wasn't much more I could learn in the way of technique. After completing the first chapter I realized I was mistaken and continued through the book.I found the information to be extremely helpful and interesting just the same. With each new technique were photograph's displaying the step by step motions to help the reader grasp the concept and lesson. The visual aids were key!I wont say that after completing this book you'll be on a cable network fishing show, but it will improve the way you fish if you're looking to do that.Definately a first rate book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Reading the reviews before I received the book, I had plans of returning it unopened. Well curiosity got to me and I opened it and read quickly through it. #1 the print and pictures are too small. #2 the pictures are in black and white . #3..the book appears to be written in the 1950's. Read all the reviews here..and you'll know what you are getting!....The only plus thing is the reduction in the price..I would say the 12.00 price from amazon saves this purchase from being a total disaster. Don't get expressed shipping since it will make the total purchase price 23.00 which is too much for this book.. ... Read more

Our copy is the even rarer AUTOGRAPHED Limited Edition of 500, numbered (#95) and SIGNED by THE Colt authority, R. L. Wilson. A beauty of a book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprised at the profusive praise
I bought this book sight unseen based on my interest in the subject matter and from seeing other offerings of RL Wilson and liking them.First off, this book hasn't been updated since it was produced in the late 80s.Lots has changed since that time.First off, I need to claim my biases. When it comes to Colt I am primarily interested in Single Action Armies, 1911s, and the Python/Diamonbacks.That said I couldn't believe how little photography was devoted to the 1911.By far the most numerous of Colts ever made due to WWI and II production. There were very few photos of standard production 1911s and those that were there were of well used and weatherbeaten ones. There were more of the decorative/unique 1911s.I am fortunate enough to live near a collection of Frank Phillip's (Petroleum) Colt's in the museum in Bartlesville, OK.I couldn't believe Wilson would not photograph their Colts. They're pristine, covering every major variant. The Peacemaker was given fair coverage. The Python and Diamondback were given very little coverage. At the time the Diamondback was current production and more blah in his opinion, I am sure.Looking back on it, it was a classic since it was the last affordable, working man's revolver made by Colt. Now, to me, it marks the end of an epoch.Yes, Colt still makes Pythons but they are so expensive, hard to find and production is so limited they are not hardly worth talking about anymore. If you are into the early guns primarily this is probably a great book.Based on my interests this book was a bit of a disappointment.

Very seldom will you find "how to" books with this much REAL information. The kind of info that even casual fishermen will find not only do-able but successful. I highly recommend it for the beginner and experienced Striper-getter. MC ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collections
Just the right book for any hunter. My only complaint is the sections on English manor homes seemed a little disjointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Trophy Room Book
This series is an excellent designed series of photos of trophy rooms from around the world. These make an excellent addition to our trophy room coffee table. They are well made and interesting to look at. The pictures are good and the book takes the wear and tear of repeated use. I would recommend this serie to anyone interested in viewing interesting trophy room layouts and mounts of some of the worlds experienced hunters, most of whom have had the honor of hunting worldwide. ...
