5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource
I just opened my new copy of Stephen Hinch's book Outdoor Navigation with GPS. It's great, exactly what I was looking for; I just devoured the first 39 pages. Even better, I was able to explain some terminology and how the GPS works to my husband, who uses one all the time for work but didn't know about almanac data, ephemeris data, and PRN codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to GPS Navigation
This is the best book I've found for learning how to use GPS in the outdoors. It is well organized, easy to understand, and has lots of useful illustrations.I also like the fact that it is more than just a book on GPS.It also includes detailed chapters on map and compass navigation and primitive navigation techniques for use in emergencies. It is organized into 5 parts, starting with the simplist techniques and building from there. In Part 1, you learn the concepts of waypoints and bearings. Some people may never need to know more than this.Part 2 teaches you about latitude and longitude, as well as a chapter on geocaching.Part 3 covers advanced navigation using topographic maps.Part 4, titled "Recovering from Disaster" shows you what to do if your GPS fails.Part 5 describes fun ways to use your GPS and includes a GPS selection guide. As usual with electronics, this chapter is a little dated now, but the rest of the book is still relevant if even you have a newer GPS.There is also an interesting final chapter called GPS FAQs that answers a number of unusual questions.
4-0 out of 5 stars recreational uses
Hinch starts off with a brief history of GPS. How it grew out of the Cold War. But with the continual improvement in electronics, GPS is thus available to a mass consumer market. And we now have it for outdoor recreational uses.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a Class of its' Own
Peter Capstick's "Maneaters" is one of those rare books that anyone, young or old, and from any background, any country could, and probably will, read over and over. But be prepared for your world to receive a shock. Capstick pulls no punches and coddles no one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tellings of True Tall Tales
This is one of my favorite Capstick books. His descriptions are vivid, his valid insights based on his experiences and those of his friends and co-workers.A must-read for hunters AND animal lovers.1-0 out of 5 stars Alive Because He's Lucky - His Escorts Had Better Aim!
While entertaining, this book seems to misrepresent. In a couple os occasions, his foolish moves almost got him killed. If it hadn't been for sure-footed and accurate (in their aim) colleagues, Capstick would have been dead.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly work on the American Bowie knife
Many knife collectors will welcome this edition to their bookshelves. The high numbers of high quality knifemakers and eager customers in recent years has created a natural interest in the early beginnings of the uniquely American Bowie knife that needs to be satisfied. Mr.Flayderman has heard the calling and has delivered in abundance. There is something for everybody in this book. The quality of documentary evidence is commendable and I even liked thepictures but don't think of this as a coffee table book. There is more here than can be covered in this humble review. The owner of this edition will return to it again and again and will glean yet another glimpse of our American history when the country was young and wild. If knives are of interest to you this book will serve.

5-0 out of 5 stars bowie knife book
I purchased this book as a gift for my uncle. It is well worth the money! It is a coffee table-type book with thick heavy pages and LOTS of beautifully detailed photos. His only negative comment when I gave it to him was, "That is a dagger on the cover!" and He knows his knives!! I guess the publisher doesn't know what a bowie knife looks like.If you like bowie knives or know someone who does, this is a perfect book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's not here, you don't need to know it
I have checked out at least 30 books from our city and county library systems on saltwater fishing from all over the country on inter-library loan. None were as good as this one! This is the only book that has the hooks, rigs, lures and knots associated with a particular type of fishing in their own section. This is extremely helpful compared to pages of unassociated graphics. The photographs (and there are plenty of them) are all in color and the paper is a high quality gloss matte. There are pencil graphics of techniques. The sections on cleaning and cooking your fish are outstanding with a few recipes thrown in. Each type of fish is identified with the bait to use, method of catch, where to catch them and what equiipment to use. Good water-resistant cover. Can't go wrong with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handbook for Sucessful Angling
This book is full of information that will help put you and your friends into some good fishing. The information ranges from fishing on rental boats in a small saltwater bay to offshore trips for big gamefish and even provides recipes for your catch from Milt's lifelong fishing companion and wife, June. One of the highlights of the book is the use of photography chronicling histactics as a "jetty jock" in order to land the coveted lunker Striped Bass that cruise the Northeast coast every April to December from the Cheasapeake bay, Virginia to New England. There are even some photos revealing his commitment toteaching and imparting his fishing "know how" to his grandaughters on small skiffs.Rosko has been fishing for more than 60 years and he has culled the best of his knowledge gained over six decades into this 288 page handbook for successful angling! He covers all the coasts but is especially strong in his homegrown territory, the Northeast coast. It makes a great gift for someone who has a passion for fishing or a budding gift for fishing. I bought one for me and one for my newest fishing disciples. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide, the rest is up to you....
Very good, short, easy to read book. Mc Evoy shows you the techniques for throwing a knife accurately. Reading this book will point you in the right direction. Afterwards practice, and lots of it is what is going to make yougood at it. The only reason i deducted one star is because since the bookwas written in 1973 I believe, some of the info on Knife throwingaffiliations, etc.. is outdated. Nonetheless, good, concise, andinformative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice!Practice!Practice!
Not only does this book explain the snap , you must have to actually stick a knife and show all the fundamentals and learning secrets, but it also goes in depth for the intermediate thrower on trick throws and moreadvanced techniques and illustrates professionals and what they use andwhat they inspire. A great book for any stage of the fascinating art ofknife throwing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Mr. McEvoy teaches traditional knife throwing in this book as well as outlines tomahawk throwing. If you wish a more in-depth look at tomahawk throwing, I suggest you read Mr. McEvoy's other book on the subject.Theauthor describes in detail the traditional technique as well as ways tofigure out the distance at which you can throw the knife and"stick" it.He also has tales of past professionals in the sportand their own particular styles of throwing. He also talks of usingthrowing knives as huntsmens' tools and building a suitable outdoor target. He also shows you how to select (a) suitable knives (knife). If you wishto get the fundamentals of knife throwing down, this is the book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete is right!
just a quick word about this wonderful book: within two months of reading it, and having never fly-fished a day in my life, i took 23 creel-size trout in two days from Helton Creek, North Carolina. this book guided me throug the purchase of all my equipment, and instructed me on all the techniques in using it. in the nine months since i first read this book i have caught all three species of trout, countless pan fish, crappies, small- and large-mouth bass, and one baracudda. i highly recomend it to anyone interested in fly-fishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I'm reading this book right now and I love it!I used to read his articles years ago in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Sports Afield and I'd forgotten what a fine writer he was. I like the way he tells good stories while he's taking fishing and even though I can't yet get to some of the places he's writing about, he sure makes me want to be there. This is the sort of book that a book lover will enjoy and a book lover who is also a fly fisher will especially enjoy every bit of it! My husband, Tom, who is a writer himself, also has read it and is every bit as keen on it as I.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Southern Fisherman
This book is listed as 368 pages. Thankfully there were only 349. I thought I was reading a novel. Each chapter began with a verbose, and usually self backpatting, 4-5 page introduction of the authors personal conquest while fly fishing. It took me so long to read, that I was out of time to return it. I sincerely believe the "meat" of this book could have been communicated in less than 200 pages, and probably less than 100 if color photos(other than the 10 pages in the center of the book that were of no benefit) were used. Actually, few photos of the "how to" were shown, the sketches carried most of the weight. Most of the black-and-white photos were of an already caught fish that bolstered the authors standing with his audience. L.L.Beans books are done and offer more info. Let's cut to the chase so that we can get back on the water. I would not recommend to beginner of advanced fishermen. I think that any book that includes fly tying or pictures of fishing flies commands color photos. How many fishing lures have you ever bought from a black-and-white catalog? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars To Fish is to Dream...
Not that author Bob Rich asked, but to me fishing is about dreams:the dream of catching a fish, and the dream about it after I do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing Club
Really cool book.I was intriqued by the different backgrounds and stories of the fisherman profiled. It really hits home how universally loved fishing really is.Bob seems to be able to capture the essence of each of the anglers. There is hope for us amatuers afterall!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Fishing Club
This book is a classic, a quick read full of great tales. It's fascinating to read the life of the anglers featured in this book and Bob did a fantastic job keeping the reason for the love of fishing until the very end. This book is beautiful, interesting, and a pleasure to read.I don't hunt, collect stamps or wildlife art, but this is a great book.I am truly enjoying it. I especially like the section on conservation, which detailsthe history of water fowl degradation and protection in the United States.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Practical Knots
I enjoy this book.It is well written and generally well illustrated. The book would have been improved by a more careful edit before publication. There seem to be a few illustrations that are misplaced or mis-labeled.Still, I have been able to master a variety of knots that I now use regularly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best book on fishing knots
I've looked through all the other books on knots (and/or fishing knots), and even own some of them. This book is the hands-down winner.First, it has ALL the knots.Second, it's very specific about how to tie them, including how many wraps for different situations, and which side the tag end should come through, etc.The only problem with the book is that it can be a little hard for a beginner to figure out what basic set of knots s/he needs for a particular type of fishing (e.g., fly fishing).Although the book makes an effort at this, their suggestions don't jibe with what I've learned in the field and are a bit too complicated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased!
This is one of those books that once started, hard to put down.Got me through a rainy weekend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
What a wonderful book.Although I am a passionate fly fisher I rarley read books about fishing because my own time spent on the water is such a personal experiance. So much of what is written is about how big how many and arn't I good. Lani Wallers book is a gental and often hilarious collection of stories more about the places, the friends he has fished with and his obvious love and respect for his choosen quarry. Lani bares his soal in a way that few of us would care to. He does it with much honesty, charm and humor leaving his reader with a real understanding for the respect he gives to each and every fish he catches. Few people have the coarage to live their lives doing somthing that brings them such total satisfaction without thought for what is percived as the desirable?material things of life.Lani has obvoiously followed the sound of his own drum and has as much passion today as he had over 50 years ago. His writing demonstrates an immagination that still has all the fun of a young child in it.

This is my first year hunting--I wanted to read up on some tactics and how to's of hunting. My husband has been hunting for 15 years and he has really enjoyed reading this book also. The writer either confirmed or shed new light on some things my husband has believed about whitetails. He has stated this is the best information he has ever read on bowhunting.

3-0 out of 5 stars The end of the big game - A book to protect today'swildlife
Published in 1965, the book is the most famous book of Peter Beard. The book is shoking as most photos are pictures of dead animals, it is definitely not a book to look at before your safari.Black and white pictures are excellent.Sadly, the last pages are only photos of elephant's carcasses (too much?).The Beard's touch is a book full of old illustration, tiny pics, small and odd drawings and detailed texts - most of them taken from the British Museum. The book is about the Old Africa and text about Mt Kenya, the Man-eaters of Tsavo, Nairobi and Karen Blixen are not easy and you must have a knowledge of Kenyan history to understand them fully. This book is essential for any African collection as it has shocked and marked history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Africa brought to life
An excellent book for those that can handle the truth. It shows what will happen when nature is left to manage itself and what happens when men don't control themselves. It's about hard times and history-a way of life long forgotten. If you are a product of the spoonfed Disney age, then you'll find this book shocking. It may well be your first taste of truth about wild animals, wild places, and the true spirit of man. This book is about Old Africa and should not be judged with today's politically correct eye. It is an account of things happened in a forgotten time, and a lost way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Africa-brought to life
It's a very real look at Old Africa. It shows the truth of man's bad luck, bad descisions, greed, and life filled with hard times. It shows nature in it's true self, not some Disney version of happy animals dancing around. This is an excellent book and should serve as a wake up call for the multitudes of Americans who believe the garbage that is spoon fed to them on their televisions. It may be well more than most readers can handle, because the truth is not sugar coated here. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
This book was all together disappointing. It was very repeative and offered very little useful information. It had one or two good points, but repeated them over and over.If you want to hunt elk in Montana, this book goes over every possible place an elk could be, whick is a lot of places.Parts of the book were controdictory to other parts. No mention of field judging antlers, and very little mention of useful equipment. If you are looking for a good elk hunting book check out elk hunting by mike eastman.

This book has been a real help in my opening forays into the world of back powder hunting.Mr Raychard explains every aspect of black powder hunting, from weapon and caliber choices to how it all works and why, cleaning of firearms to cleaning, caping and field judging of trophy animals. This is a well researched and well written journey through the ins and outs of hunting with muzzleloaders.I highly recommend this anyone wanting to go afield with a smokepole!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for the Novice
I have not yet begun blackpowder hunting but found this book to be invaluable. This book is a wonderful, comprehensive introduction to the sport without becoming overwhelming. It covers the all aspects of the firearms from shooting to maintenance but also covers hunting. 8 chapters are devoted to individual big game species, giving valuable information about these animals and how to hunt them with a muzzleloader. Finally the book contains a valuable collection of resources from taxidermists to outfitters. This is a valuable introduction for the newcomer to blackpowder hunting and I highly recommend it.The author has covered all the bases and you can't go wrong. If you think you might like to pick up a muzzleloader the next time you go hunting, take a look at this title. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Two books rather than one?
The author clearly loves his work, the dogs and the outdoors and for much of this book we are entertained with his adventures. The rest of the book concentrates (loosely) on training your dog. I found it to lack the detail and layout to use as a training manual. Although it is a fine read I would prefer to see more of a reference manual and read the anectdotes with a cognac at the end of the day.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Labrador Shooting Dog
If you like stories then this is the book for you.Gould does not discuss training until you are half way through the book. The training starts with introducing the dog to the field and the waist cord. You will do better to look elsewhere for more in depth training information, especially if you need to start training at the basic level of come, sit and stay.I would recomend "Game Dog" by Wolters. He is precise and compasionate in his training techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars One good dog
I have got the chance to meet the author myself as for my uncle helped Mike train his dogs and guided bird hunts in Northern Idaho and Colorado. I have got to read all of Mikes books and they are outstanding and can be seen in his view of life and nature. I have worked with a few of Mikes pups and own one today, Spring. All of these dogs are outstanding in attitude and loving passion. Mikes views on training are very humane and done in a loving manner. Mike has profected the use of love to train. I will never train any other way or buy anyone elses pups. ... Read more

This book is a compendium of the information that Lefty Kreh has imparted by books and talks at angling shows over his career.Whether this book is useful to you depends on how many of his previous books you have purchased.Much of what appears in this book has been published in some form before. If you don't have any of Lefty's books, by all means get this one.If you have read one or more of his books, a lot of the information in this one will look familiar.
