5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great easy reading book for anyone interested in Chuck, or Archery, or hard work and inspiration.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very exciting!
I highly recommend "Life at Full Draw," because it tells a lot more about the life of Chuck from boyhood through his Super Slam!Reading these hunting adventures makes a bowhunter dream about some of these hunts. I felt that this book was much better than Super Slam, because I got to know who Chuck Adams is and how he thinks.I have tried contacting him through a magazine, but have not heard back from him.I'm not sure how to take that, did he not get my message, is he to busy to respond, or is he simply ignoring me?I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Could anyone be this good?
Chuck Adams. Any archer who doesn't know the name of the most prominent bowhunter today -- the one with the trademark smile and knit cap, the one often mentioned in the same breath as Howard Hill, Fred Bear and other archery luminaries -- isn't paying attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly incredible tales
I am an avid scuba diver who likes to hunt for lobster and fish. I was not prepared for what I found in this book. The casual approach to entering the ocean food chain to hunt large tuna and marlin among large great white sharks left me wondering if Terry Maas (the author) has a death wish. Nevertheless, I think I will try this sport on a smaller scale and hopefully venture to south of Cabo to try my hand at large yellowfin. I found this book to be very matter of fact about a not so standard way to kill some time on your vacation. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves diving, extreme adventure, and the ocean.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for intermediate and advanced spearos
This book contains a plethora of interesting stories,as well as usefulinformation for the aspiring blue water hunter. One learns that not allspearfishermen desire to shoot everything in the sea, but that theirinvolvemnt in the preservation of the ocean's resources is tempered with anattitude of respectful game gathering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind.
I've only moved "off the shelf" and into the blue this year, having used a sling since childhood. Had I read this book earlier I would have had many more years' experience by now. It covers a range of topics and is well illustrated. A good practical guide to the sport spiced with enough of the sort of chilling (sharks, line tangles, blackout) and inspiring (marlin hunters, jewfish hunted by sound alone, bluefin rocketing by at 50 mph) story-talk to captivate even my nondiving friends. I've read many of these stories out loud to hushed circles of friends. The comments on safety are reasonable and reflect a good respect for those who've lived a life in the water. A good job all round; I look forward to Terry's next. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for pistol shooting
This book is an excellent primer for the person looking to be able to accurately fire a handgun very quickly.I purchased this book as a primer for the local concealed weapons license (CWL) course for my wife and benefited from it greatly as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal Book for Beginners
I started to think of having a hand gun 5 weeks ago, after reading this book and starting practicing I could score 98% on a 7 yard target consistently only after 3 weeks. My wife read the book and could score 87% on her first time shooting. I gave the book to a friend and I am buying a second one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if you like reading gun books
This book is very basic and takes upon the same mentality of what I call "the purpose driven mentality". That is you take basic ideas and then imposed them on as many books as you can possibly come up with. That being said, this is a well written book that will act for your creativity if you lack it. I would recommend Kelly McCann's (Jim Gorver) defensive pistol video series over this book and just about any other out there. Mr. Suarez's material is sound do not get me wrong, but if you are like me and are on a limited budget I would rather you have a whole meal with the tapes rather then just a taco. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coombs on fly patterns & steelhead fishing techniques
Coombs invites the best of steelheaders to discuss their favorate western stream, fly patterns, presentation, and memories.Very useful for patterns and places to fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally, the bible on the subject
I'm not interested in selling this product to or for anyone, and I rarely write reviews, but after reading this book I felt like I had to say something about it. The essence of fly fishing for steelhead CANNOT be encapsulated into a bound volume...the subtle nuances of the sport far exceed the explanatory capacity of the written word. That said, Trey Combs loves this sport like few others I've encountered, and writes with a technical proficiency that is almost completely missing in this genre. The historical information alone makes this volume worth spending twenty dollars of your discretionary income, and if you tie flies, you really NEED to have this book. There is a separate chapter on nearly every relevant steelhead river in the west (save the smaller, out of the way streams, which we all thank Trey for not including). The author has fished them all extensively, knows the locals, understands the ethics of the sport, and writes VERY well. The book is a smooth pictoral not only of fly fishing in western rivers but of the new conservationist mentality that simply must be adopted if we want our kids to ever have a shot at catching a wild steelhead. This one tops out at over five hundred pages, and serves not only as entertainment but as an angling period-piece as well as a streamside and tying-benchside reference. Any one who fly fishes for Pacific Steelhead should own this. On a side-note, those of you who fish for great lakes steelhead should really read this as well. The good doctor Combs calls your fish "land-locked" steelhead and doesn't really comment on the fishery aside from that. Having spent a decent amount of time fly fishing the Salmon River in upstate New York, I can only comment that Trey's technique suggestions are beneficial for anyone fishing anywhere for any strain of steelhead. Although I currently concentrate my efforts on Pacific fish due to geographic convenience, I would love the opportunity to get back to NY and fish the Ontario tributaries again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book had lots of good information on live bearers.I think it's an excellent source to start out with.If you are looking for very specific information, this may not be the book for you.I was really looking for some Platy specific requirements that don't necessarily include breeding, and other than a short paragraph, there wasn't hardly any information tuned especially for Platys. That being said, It's a great starting place for breeding live bearers. The pictures of Guppies & Mollies were lovely. The fish illness discriptions were well written. But you should not use this as your sole source of information on these types of fish.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mollies
This book was helpful, but did not have as much on Mollies as I hoped. It still is packed with lots of good information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book surpassed my expectations

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Impressive book by Andy Stanford. His explanations and thought process are dead-on (pun not intended). I wish the photos were in color or had multiple angle views. The valuable information he provided definitely helps me be a better marksman. All in all, an excellent book on firing, aiming, stance, and etc..
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Not a lot of fluff or hype. Just good sound teaching. If you carry a handgun you should take a training class. This book is the outline for one of Andy's classes, and this is the class you should take.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been worse
Several Wilderness Press books were written by the author or his hunting buddies. The latter is the case with "Western Wings". So it goes without saying that is no classic of upland bird hunting, but rather a loosely organized collection of hunting tales and observations of your average Western bird hunter. Williams does do a good job of describing the behavioral patterns of birds throughout the days and the seasons, and dispels some common myths about prairie gamebirds (e.g. "huns always flush wild in the late season"). You get the impression he knows his bird dogs, although he does does not really delve into the subject. I do have to respect him for NOT including a chapter on pheasants---which he says he hunts "reluctantly". This book is really mostly his personal homage to the vast grasslands of the West, and the grouse, prairie chickens, and huns that make the Big Sky country a bird hunter's dream. It is neither great writing nor informative naturalism, but it's a pleasant book to crack open on a winter's night, when you want to reflect on seasons past. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times
Safari: A Chronicle Of Adventure details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times. Bull is an environmentalist, so his survey Safari isn't your typical gun-hunter's celebration of good old days, but a survey of conflicts between hunting and conservation, weapons and transport, game control and more. From economics and financers of the safari to mishaps, adventures, and famous personalities involved in safaris, vintage black and white photos pair with wide-ranging personal and political stories for maximum effect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull
A wonderful book covering the beginnings of the African Safari to the present. Many current authors use this book as reference for their own books such as Peter Beard, Bibi Jordan, Kuki Gallman, and Mirella Ricciardi. If all of these authors use this book as a reference and quote it throughout their own books it has just got be good. I recommend it highly for any African Safari book collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Reading books by authors like Capstick is a very good alternative to reading fiction. When you are reading fiction, however scary, thrilling and realistic it may be, at the back of your mind you know that it is fiction. Some of it may not even be plausible. When you are reading true adventure, it is then that you can realise the closeness of death to life, you can identify with the characters more closely, and you can feel their fear of something as primeval and primitive as claws, fangs and horns. You can also feel their elation at escaping injury.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Hunters
Many other reviewers have characterized "Death in the Dark Continent" very, very well. It is a bit more graphic than Capstick's earlier "Death in the Long Grass", but not much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Capsticks as good as ever.
If you havent read Capstick, you are missing out on a treat. Not only are his stories, graphic, exciting and compelling, his style of writing is nothing short of superb. Genuinly exciting, and often laugh out loud funny, all of his books are fantastic. When talking about the turn of the century past-time of "galloping lions" (described as "dangerous as typhoid") he writes:" THe elements recquired for the monotony breaking past time were a fast horse, a good rifle, a few lions and not much concern about the future".Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Love the book, not the author
This is a great book for people aspiring to become a professional gunsmith. It may have some usefulness for the normal gun owner as well. The detail and comments provided show this book was written by someone with an extreme amount of knowledge and experience in the subject.Unfortunately the author realizes this and wrote this book to reflect it.His egotistical lectures of exactly what the reader should do go beyond what I expected to gain from this book. Then there are the contradictions that lead me to not believe in the author's knowledge as much as I did when I started.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding description of a highly effective method
If you thought you understood steelhead fishing before reading this book, you are in for a big surprise. Davis not only explains the theory of how and why steelhead act the way they do, but he clearly and efficiently putsit to practical use by showing anglers exactly what spinners to fish in allconditions and how to fish them. As he points out in the opening chapter, nothing is left out or glossed over. He goes into excruciating detail oneverything. But don't, for a minute, think this will bore you. You will beon the edge of your seat as he tears apart conventional beliefs andintroduces you to whole new way of looking at things. For example, mosttrout and salmon anglers think that steelhead become lethargic in coldwater and must be angled for with tiny baits. Well, here comes Jed Daviswith a silver-plated #5 spinner in 32 degree water. I must say that Ilaughed my head off at first. Like how did this thing ever get published?Surely, this man had to be a lunatic. But I tried the technique in upstateNew York and at my parents house near Bellingham, Washington. I hate to saythis but his system works. Most guys keep this type of thing a secret. NotDavis. This is more like true confessions of an expert steelheader.Regardless of the method you fish, this book will give you tremendouspractical insight. Definitely one of the best fishing books I ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all around guide for fishing steelhead, esp in NW
More than just a book on lure selection and presentation, Jed Davis describes how optimal lure size and color differs according to water temp, sunlight and water color. Viewing spinners as 'attractors' makes spinner fishermen much closer to fly fishermen than they might otherwise think. Davis' love of fishing -- bordering on the obsessional -- permeates the book and makes it more entertaining to read than most how-to books are. (It also raises the question "What does this guy do for a living?" He fishes only weekdays, and you have to sell a lot of spinners to pay the rent.) As a new steelhead fisherman, I read and re-read the book to good effect. It took a couple of readings before I gleaned two key points. First, this technique works best on smaller rivers and streams. Second, being the first angler of the day to present an 'attractor' (i.e. spinner) in a size which almost (but not quite) spooks the fish is the best way to catch steelhead. There are a certain percentage of 'aggressive' (read 'dumb') fish in the river on any given day and Jed Davis' goal is to present his spinner to as many of these fish as possible. Using the author's techniques works, particularly if you sight fish and are prepared to cover a lot of water. Reminds me (somewhat) of the Teeny method of fly fishing for steelies: put itin front of their noses and slam'em! ... Read more

Editorial Review

While most of us, if we had our druthers, would cast dry flies to rising fish all day long, the fact remains that a trout takes 90 percent of its prey below the surface. It doesn't require a marine biologist to figure out that on certain days--when the hatch is off--you need nymphs if you want to feel that telltale tug at the end of your line. To this end, Gary Borger provides a comprehensive guide to identifying, tying, and fishing artificial nymph patterns. Chapters on line control (casting and mending), trout biology, reading the water, and fly selection are presented in clear language along with ample drawings and diagrams. As the author writes in his preface, "Fly fishing, and nymphing in particular, is more than just a method of catching trout.... it is an open-ended learning experience with lessons in ecology, limnology, botany, ichthyology, natural history, and much more." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Catch and release
I am an easily excitable female with a voracious appetite so when I saw the title of this book on the shelf I snapped it up and hurried home to get some new techniques for landing my catch of the day.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classics.
I signed this book out of the library in my adolescence and sucked it up like a brown does a golden stone. There are a lot of similar books out there -- and some videos on tying and fishing nymphs as well -- that are useful. But because this book was a formative influence on me and I can not imagine having been without it, I have to give it all five stars. Indispensable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tactical overview of nymphing techniques

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind!
In a few words Jim Corbett can transport you back 60-100 years & make you feel like you are right there beside him tracking a Tiger in India. There is no bravado, he comes across as very humble. I had read his "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" several years ago & thought it was without a doubt one of the best books I had ever read. Even knowing how good his books were I was still highly impressed with this book as well. It isn't just the tigers he describes but the whole Indian country-side & the people & animals that habitat the place. He takes you there. Don't hesitate to read one of his books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Words cant describe my respect for this man
Once again in this book Jim Corbett has proved it, he was a awesome incredible gentleman. I have never seen anyone who could write like him. Amazing man with amazing courage. His modesty is revealed throughout his book. He goes through so much suffering and pain, but never once writes about it. From his book you can feel how much concern he had for people. People trusted him with with their lives. His book teaches us a lot about jungles. I would recommend this to anyone who likes animals. Once again Jim Corbett you were and still are the best writes of adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must read this book!!!!!!!!!!
Known locally in India as "Carpet Sahib", a mispronunciation of his name, Colonel Jim Corbett was called upon time and time again to rid the hills of Kumaon of man eating Tigers and Leopards. This book is one of his many spine thrilling depictions of his hunting adventures with maneaters in India.I've read this and his other books many times..and I still read them when I have time.... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marlin Model 1893
Mr. Brophy did his homework in writing this beautifully bound and informative book, but somehow, probaably due to Marlin Firearms being lax in their record keeping, especially serial numbers and the appropriate dates of manufacture, I was unable to pinpoint the data needed to establish the exact history of this gun. I have been forwarded to another source for possibly gaining a more accurate record of this guns manufacture. A fine book other than this.
