5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This guide leads hikers on some of the best trails along the Parkway. As a summer resident of the area I have been hiking the area for several years and I still learned from this guide. As a biologist, I particularly liked the coverage of plants and animals of the area.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" takes you to the top!
As an avid hiker, I struggle to find detailed maps and descriptions of hikes. My time is limited, so I love to find out exactly what to expect on a hike before I begin. "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" has become my primary reference to discovering new hikes that are easy to find. It is very evident that Mr. Johnson has hiked all of the trails because of the great details such as "don't get sucked down the old trail... bear right to reach the junction with two signs."
5-0 out of 5 stars "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" is an excellent guide
As a child, I first hiked trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway with my father more than 40 years ago, and over the decades I've continued to return with a sense of awe at the area's spectacular beauty and rich seasonal variety. But what has been lacking for all of that time is a trail guide that mixes knowledgeable commentary and accurate descriptions with good topographical maps and photos. "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway," which I picked up just last week on the way to the mountains, now fills that void in exemplary fashion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide
I first borrowed this book from a local library, now I am going to order one. This is a fantastic hiking guide. It is small and light enough (only about 100 pages and the dimension is about 4"x7") to carry in a backpack and not have to feel the weight. It is concise and extremely helpful. The trails are organized by mile post marks and there is a list of all trails in order of difficulty. The description of each hike gives the total mileage of the trail, highlights and landmarks along the trail and a map. Now my goal for the next couple of years is to complete all the trails covered in this book, and I am sure it will be indispensible!

3-0 out of 5 stars wide selection, lacks specifity
Just tried to use this book for hike in North Point State Park and found it difficult to follow. Luckily, we had another guide with a map. This guide often does not have maps and the directions lack points on the compass, i.e. north, south, east, west.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every Washington Hiker
I have been looking for a book just like this for some time now. Having hiked a fair amount in and around Washington I was running short on ideas for new hikes.I had tried the Appalchian Trial Guides and some otherbooks that are out there but felt that while they were great on traildetails they didn't provide much of the practical information that you wantwhen heading out to a new destination.Especially enjoyed the author'seditorial comments and trail descriptions which combined to make the book apleasure to read. The author must be a dog lover as well which earns herpoints in my book. She marks each trail to let dog owners know if theirpooches are welcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.
Having been on many trails in the region (and now many more thanks to this guide), I highly recommend100 Easy Hikes. It's as good as it gets for hitting all the hot spots in the Washington DC area- from nearby jaunts onthe trails of Rock Creek Park to the lesser known gems in the Shenandoah. Additionally, the author's insider tips and her clear directions to thetrailheads make this guide exceptional. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lace up your boots, grab your pack , and hit the trail!
Before I read "Exploring the Appalachian Trail - Hikes in the Virginias", I thought you could only experience the Appalachian Trail on an extended backpacking expedition.Man, was I wrong!Even if you only have a few hours to spare, you can still enjoy hiking on the AT - this book shows you how.One of a series covering the entire trail from Georgia to Maine, this book describes a wide variety of dayhikes in Virginia.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book--and a brand new edition
Just bought the third edition of 50 Hikes in Northern Virginia and I'm thrilled with what the author has put together. I'm not sure why the previous reviewer complained so much about the choice of hikes, almost all of them are within a couple hours' drive of the DC area. And what great hikes--the ones closest to DC include a walk along Bull Run, in Manassas National Battlefield, and Prince William National Forest. There are the old standbys, like Old Rag and Stony Man in Shenandoah, but also some little known ones a bit further west on Massanutten Mountain and near the Virginia/West Virginia border.
1-0 out of 5 stars The Title Should be "50 Hikes NOT in Northern Virginia"
I almost bought this book, until I realized not a single hike described is actually in Northern Virginia, where I live. All the hikes are in Virginia, but "Northern Virginia" generally refers to the areas areound Washington, DC, say as far south as Stafford and as far west as Leesburg. These hikes are in Shennandoah National Park, western VA, and the Chesapeake Bay areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best all round NOVA hiking guide books
Leonard Adkins has written and compiled one of the best hiking guide books for the Northern Virginia area, filled with accurate maps, directions and trail history. With hikes from just a couple of miles to three day backpacks it has something for everyone. I've hiked ninety percent of the trails in this book and haven't been disappointed by one of them. This is a must have if you hike in the NOVA area. I haven't found another guide as well put together as this is. Leonard Adkins also has several other guide books covering the Mid-Atlantic that are every bit as good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Multiple-day Hikes
This book is very portable (slim and easy to carry). While it includes day hikes in the first section, the second section is great if you are planning to hike (and camp) for more than one day.Not only does it include trail descriptions, mileage, it also offers advice on how many miles to do per day, etc.I did find one "error" during the Hazel Mountain day hike section (the mileage in the text doesn't match the mileage in the description) but that's not major.Overall, GREAT BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiking the easy way
Molloy obviouly spent a lot of time at Shenandoah because all the hikes he picked were winners (at least all those I have gone on so far!).This book tells me just what I want to know: the hike, distance, difficulty, and hiking time.Even better, it gives me a running commentary about what I am going to see on the hike, so I don't miss anything. And it fits right in my pack!I really like the directions to get me to the trailhead. I can pack up and be on the trail in a jiffy. So if you are looking for just the right information (in our era of information overload) Molloy's book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Guidebook
I barely have time to hike, much less shift through a thick, overdone guidebook. Molloy's guide is the perfect size. It saves me time, accurately detailing specific hikes to lesser known destinations with exact directions to the trailhead and good maps. It's all I ever need to explore Shenandoah National Park. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have really enjoyed using this book
50 hikes in West Virginia has provided me with information on places that I have been hiking for years, but never knew the background on them, such as the history of the place, why it looks like it does, what plants and animals make their homes there and what their lives are like. So many guidebooks just tell you how to get to a hike and how long it is, but 50 Hikes in West Virginia is so much more than that.
5-0 out of 5 stars I agree--great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Great book. Well written, interesting background on the hikes--both human and natural history as well as detailed descriptions. All of the hikes I've done so far have been very accurately described. Has some well known hikes, but also many others that are just as good, or better. I've used many other guides to the Mountain State--this one is the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best hiking guide to the parkway
My wife and I have just come home from a 3 week trip along the entire parkway. We started the trip with Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway, but ended up buying Walking the Blue Ridge at one of the visitor centers. While Hiking was ok, we found Walking the Blue Ridge to be the better of the two. It was very easy to use, easy to find information, and full of wonderful tidbits. The way the mileage data was set up in a vertical way made it very easy to use while we were hiking the trails, simple to always know where we were. In the Hiking book we had to wade through a lot paragraphs just to match up the descriptions with where we actually were on the trail. Also, it was obvious that the author of Walking the Blue Ridge had actually walked every one of the trails he was writing about. It was also nice knowing that it gave descriptions of every one of the trails along the parkway, even if it was just a short pathway; the other book neglected some that we found to be truly delightful. In addition, its smaller weight and size made it much easier to carry while on the hikes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get out of the car and walk the Blue Ridge Parkway
Designed as a "drive awhile - stop awhile" recreational road, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited unit in the National Park Service. It has 17 million visitors a year as compared to 10 million a year for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. But the Parkway is more than a beautiful drive; it is also a good base from which to hike. Adkins describes all the ways that we can get out of the car as we explore the Parkway. From a leg-stretcher to a view of Glassmine Falls Trail to the eighteen miles of the Shut-In Trail, Adkins gives a contextual introduction to the hike as well as step-by-step directions. He rates each hike from an easy leg-stretcher to strenuous.5-0 out of 5 stars Don't visit the Blue Ridge Parkway without it!
The Blue Ridge Parkway, almost 450 miles long, connects Shennandoah National Park in Virginia with Great Smoky Mountains National Park astride the North Carolina - Tennessee border. In between it traverses some of the most beautiful mountain areas in North Carolina and Virginia. Although it provides splendid views from the road itself and from its many roadside overlooks, it is much more than a scenic drive. It is a ribbon of land administered by the National Park Service, at several places broadening into wider mini-parks. All of those parks as well as various other spots along the parkway's route have hiking trails that give visitors a closer look at the many natural wonders there. This book, as a comprehensive guide to those trails, is the one most indispensable guide to getting beyond your car and the overlooks in this remarkable National Park Service land. All of its official trails are rated in this book as to difficulty, from very easy to quite strenuous. Thus there are ample hikes for whatever level of wilderness adventure you're up for. Each hike is described in details, with points of interest described in the order you'll encounter them, with mileages to each from the trailhead. Some hikes described herein also get beyond the parkway's own lands, into National Forest lands that border the parkway in many places, as well as occasional adjacent commercial attractions such as Grandfather Mountain. Any visit to the Blue Ridge Parkway should be quite rewarding, and this book is one of the best resources for making it even more so, showing that you'll never be very far from places to park and take a walk for a more intimate view. And you definitely should sample at least some of the shorter and easier walks, if not the longer or more challenging ones, depending on what you're up to. This parkway is a natural treasure well-worth exploring, and this book may well be the quickest way to learn that there is so much more there than meets a casual eye. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and useful information
I bought this book on a spotaneous day trip to SNP. I had planned to hike one of the few trails I knew about in the area and stopped at a wayside to look throught the books to get more info on the trail or even consider an alternative. I discovered this book in the store and was suprised to know that there are so many good trails in the park. I think most people are only aware of the most popular trails and this guides has many alternatives. So far I havetried 2 of the trails listed and the descriptions and maps were excellent and accurate. Most importantly this book has informed me of many new trails within 2 hours of where of live that I had not been aware of. The descriptions of the trails provide me with great information to decide which ones I want to try. I expect that this guide will be very useful for many years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide to West Virginia Hiking
If I were to choose one word to sum up this book, it would be "quantity."Allen states that he describes over 500 trails, and though I did not count them, that number sounds about right.Trail length ranges from about 1 mile to overnight backpack trips. Some background information is provided for each area, and a brief trail description (usually one paragraph) is provided.Maps are provided for the national forest lands (about half the hikes) but not for state parks or other land. The book is pocket-sized so that it can be carried easily on hikes. No matter how much hiking you have done in West Virginia, you will certainly find some destination in here you have not been.4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, Some things missing
This book has excellent information on a large number of trails in the Mountain State. The descriptions are detailed and, on the trails I followed, are very accurate. However, little attention is paid to summit data such as elevations, directions for side trips to reach summits, etc. As a person who is interested in "peak bagging", I was somewhat disappointed. There are about 173 summits in West Virginia over 4,000 feet and there is almost no reference to this attribute. This book is essential and has a tremendous amount of useful information, but does not go far enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiking Virginia's Trails
Allen de Hart's The Trails of Virginia:Hiking the Old Dominionis a classic and exhaustive study of places to hike throughout a statethat is known for its beauty and history but less acknowledged for its vast array of outdoor recreational opportunities. The author doesn't just cover his personal favorites or the 50 best walks, but every trail in the state. He's included information on distance, history, scenic features, degree of difficulty, and directions - every piece of information the hiker will need. I've used this book countless times in not only planning a hike, but also in the process of researching and writing my own outdoor guides. No matter where you plan to hike or what your level of fitness is, a well-worn copy of the Trails of Virginia should sit on your bookshelf as it does on mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought for a week vacation
Recently, I visited Monongahela on vacation with my wife. What a truly fabulous place, rich in flora and fauna. And we used this book to guide us through. Each trail description (choose from 30 day hikes and 10 overnight) offers commentary on scenery, trail condition, difficulty, accessibility for children and solitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the trail in the "Mon".
West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest is the mid-Atlantic's bestkept secret. Sure, there are a few popular destinations, like the DollySods, but there are so many other places to go in the "Mon". Butwith over a million acres of land, it's hard to figure out exactly where togo. That's where Mr. Molloy's new book comes in. It has there and back dayhikes and overnight loops. It rates each hike and then gives a runningnarrative of the trail you are on. What is really nice, in my opinion arethe concise directions to each trailhead, saving time and getting me towhere I really want to be, and that is on the trail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great hike...great book!
I just got back from a hiking/camping experience I'll never forget.I'd never been to the Monongahela, or "Mon," as it is known, but when I saw this new hiking book I thought I would give it a try.The firsthike, to Rohrbaugh Overlook, in the Dolly Sods, stunned me.Have you everjust known you were in the right place at the right time? That's how Ifelt, while looking over the Red Creek Valley surrounded by rock outcropsjutting from green forests. After a little national forest camping, Iheaded down to the Cranberry Wilderness, enjoying Molloy's Middle Forkovernight backpacking loop. The Middle Fork Cranberry River flowed clearbeneath stately yellow birch trees and when I got up to the highcountry, the scent of spruce trees provided an aromatic backdrop for a night beneaththe stars.Unfortunately the work bell rang and I had to return toPittsburgh, but with 31 other day hikes and nine overnight backpackingloops in this book I shall return to the "Mon" many more times. This is a very useful and interesting book... perfect for anyoneconsidering hiking in this area! ...
