The beginning chapters provide planning basics: post-office addresses for mailing food and supplies, suggestions on when to hike which sections and what to bring, and an introduction to the geology, flora, and fauna of the region. But the heart of the guide comprises 12 chapters of trail specifics between Highway 96 in northern California and Highway 3 in British Columbia. Each section begins and ends at a highway--often at or near a town, resort, or park. Chapters contain topographic maps, prehike information (attractions to be on the lookout for, declination settings, elevation and mileage points, permit regulations, and availability of supplies), along with detailed information on navigating your way along the trail. Not great, but the best there is
I through-hiked the PCT in 2002 and like the vast of majority of other hikers, used this guide to navigate my way through Oregon and Washington. Though this book is the source for the data points found in the PCT Data Book, you'd never suspect such a succinct, useful guide like the Data Book could from such a disorganized mess as the PCT: Oregon-Washington guide book. user-friendly, highly practical while hiking
I used this guide to hike the Oregon section of the PCT in 1993 and found it very user-friendly, highly practical while on the trail and full of interesting background information.Among the most important aspect of the guide for me was the quality and reliability of the topographic maps, thoughtfully place by the Publishers so I could take the pages out and use them in a waterproof cover for each stage as I walked it.The hints on water supplies and campsites were essential and I was able to plan my route, timings, food drops and campsites for the entire trail; this was especially important for me as my budget and time free were limited. As far as I remember, the only thing that was incorrect was that there was no longer a bus from Bridge of the Gods into Portland.Not bad. Someday, we'll have an update, eh?
If there's certain kinds of books that must be consistently updated, it'dbe reference books, especially place references.I keep this book near anddear to my heart because it has great hikes, particularly ones that havesmall campsites that once the day-hikers go home are quiet and nice.Butthee lack of an update is glaring.For example, the Table Rock (MolallaRiver Valley one) hike has a poor description of how to get there, as rapidgrowth in the Willamette Valley has changed the roads and towns on the way. Also, the trailhead is now around three or so miles earlier, since theroad gave out in 1996.I cannot group this book with the outdated trashthough, since it manages to capture a good idea, and also most booksoverlook Table Rock, period. ... Hiking/camping bible for Oregon
A must have if you live in or close enough (like me) to Oregon to camp there, and you insist that your campground has a hiking trail, like I do! I found a wealth of information on where to camp and hike in my neighboring state, and even though I haven't had time to go camping yet, I have used this to find hiking trails to explore. Many nice, enticing photos throughout the book, and decriptions of the wildlife and scenery at the campgrounds and hikes, all nessesary information about the campgrounds and hikes are given, such as how many tent sites are available (I was surprised to see one campground had only one tent site!) and how long the hiking trails are. If you need a guide for Oregon on camping and/or hiking, I think this is the book you've been looking for. ... Read more

a foriegn turist viewpoint
I am a world traveler and have lived in Argentina, Columbia, and Israel.It is my understanding that Walks, Hikes and Strolls is for "mature folks".I am a young tourist in the United States for the first time as an adult and I appreciate finding a guide book that is easily understandable and points out many important things in a way that looks out for my safety, my body and my sanity.What a pleasure to be in a strange land and have such competent directions and instructions at my finger tips.I hope that many other people from other countries are as lucky as I have been to come accross this book.Good hiking to everyone!

Walks and hikes for everyone
As a lifelong hiker and adventurer, I highly recommend Johnson and Gray's "Walks, Hikes and Strolls". When I am on a hike, I want to be enjoying nature, focusing on the beauty around me and appreciating the inner peace that comes with this experience. "Walks, Hikes and Strolls" better allows me to relax and get what I want out of a hike because of its simplicity, clarity, and its common-sense approach. This book will allow young and old alike to enter nature with a feeling of security and with the knowledge needed to make the most of the experience. The Fact Finder in the left hand column gives valuable information on miles, elevation, permits needed, trail timeframes and where to obtain maps. The Feasibility Gauge in the right hand column consisely tells trail conditions, facilities, type of exposure and types of use that the trail has. This is the Best of the Hiking Guides
With many of the hiking guides lining my bookself, this one stands out with its unique, user-friendly format.All of the most important information regarding selection of a trail are on easy-to-reference columns of stand-out font along each side of the pages.The supporting narratives fill the remainder of the pages with plenty of detail to give you a clear understanding of exactly what you can expect to encounter, plus ensure that you fully enjoy and appreciate each hike. Despite the title, this book is for all hikers and I would especially recommend it for families with young children.
