4-0 out of 5 stars great "piggy-back" book
this is a great book to piggy back the good ole foghorn pac nw series on hiking/camping. the tents sites are very spread out in this book(which has good&bad points) we love the premise of this book and keep it in the car next to our favorite (foghorn)!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes helpful; sometimes confusing; sometimes misleading
I used this book during a 45 day camping trip that included Oregon. The content is usually helpful, but sometimes misleading. The infomration about Page Springs was truly helpful and led to a delightful time, including a trip up the Steen Mouintains. The information about Two Pan, on the other hand, was misleading.Actually, beside the summary of Campgound Ratings, there is very little information. What is misleading is the description as five-star quiet and five-star cleanliness/upkeep.The campground is right next to a large parking lot with horses, donkeys and lamas all about and many, many cars and people. It is anything but quiet. It also looks quite unused and unkempt; no one was there when we visited it.Suggesting that is the "jumping off spot for extended backpacking" does not give an accurate picture.3-0 out of 5 stars A decent supplemental guide
Considering the multitude of campgrounds in Oregon and Washington that exist with the same qualities presented in this book, I'm not sure the 12 bucks will get you anymore information than you could get from a morecomprehensive guidebook. But if you are a first time camper, it lists 50of the finest campgrounds in the northwest. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
One of the nicest things about this book is it includes a small map of the Portland Area with all of the locations marked. Many books do not include this simple feature which makes it very nice to find walks near you or in a particular area. All of the directions for getting everywhere are very clear. Each walk includes a small map, distance, time required, best time to go, highlights, terrain, and commentary. It is also really good about stating whether or not a hike is good for wheelchairs and strollers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Made my vacation!
Used this book exclusively on my recent "waterfall tour" of Oregon and Washington.I wanted to make the most of day hikes to areas that had waterfalls. This book allowed me to plan my day-to-day itineraries and cram the most into the trip. Invaluable for a true waterfall lover.Waterfalls listed by geographical areas. Descriptions of some trailheads hard to follow, but maps were good.Decribes the difficulty to reach each fall (easy to need to be a bushwacking expert).5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Great book, we had never been in these areas and were able to find everything very easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never be lost again! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover Oregon's Wilderness Areas
This guidebook can used as either a coffee table gift book with its multitudes of beautiful colored photographs or a guide to suggested hikes in Oregon's Wilderness areas. The author, for years a resident of Oregon, gives you one hundred of her favorite hikes to some of the Oregon's wild areas. The pictures in the book, like the two-page layout that shows a hiker on the Cooper Spur Trail in the Mt. Hood Wilderness viewing Mount Adams and Mount Rainier, or the close-up head shot of a common garter snake eating a bullfrog, are stunning. All photographs in the book were taken by the author, a renowned scenic and wildlife photographer. She describes Oregon's 36 wilderness and provides photographs that will entice you to visit them. The author has hiked every trail described in the book and provides the reader with information of the trails length, difficulty, highlights, elevation gain, maps required, best season, if permits are required, management contacts, highway directions, and trail information to the tenth of a mile. The author, who has written several Oregon hiking guides, knows what she is talking about, so if she says these are her favorite hikes you just to believe that they are going to be special.Don't take her word or mine, you will have to see a copy for yourself to appreciate its value. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NEW second edition coming out April 1, 2003
Hi, this is Bill Sullivan, the author of this book. Because of the large fires in Southern Oregon this past summer, I've decided to completely update this book. I've rehiked the trails and discovered some interesting new paths. The old edition is now out of print, but I'll have the new second edition available April 1, 2003 -- at the same price. I think it will be worth the wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sullivan's books are accurate!
I'm a bit puzzled by the previous review, because Sullivan'sbooks really do have fewer factual errors than most. In fact, he claims to offer a reward to anyone who reports an actual error -- this info is on page 2 of the book -- and he updates the book often, as you can tell by the copyright dates. If the reviewer above really has found a glitch, I'd suggest he report it to Sullivan (the address listed on Sullivan's Website). Maybe the reviewer has an old edition of the book?

3-0 out of 5 stars The hikes are well chosen but fact checking is sometimes lax
I've recently moved to Southern Oregon and this guide has been an invaluable introduction to thehikes in the area. The book is wellorganized, and does a good job of ranking hikes according to difficulty andseasonality. One failing, however, is the large number of factual errorssuch as confusing north for south, or mis-stating the number of road milesto the trailhead. These sorts of errors had the positive value of makingone more self-sufficient. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to enjoy the trail if you can't find the trailhead.
This book has one great failing: the directions to the trailheads don't include distances.Believe it or not, once you're off the main highway, it is perfectly easy to drive right by the tertiary road that leads to thetrailhead.3-0 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss
