5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
This is a MUST have book for waterfall hunters, Mr.Plumb does a excellent job in telling you how to get to the falls, how hard it is to get to it and how nice the falls are. Plus there are a lot of real nice photo's here, although there all black and white, except the cover of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lorain has been there and done it!
Awesome book that gives very helpful tips about different locations in Oregon to backpack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for backpackers
This book is great for backpackers. Warning:it is not a how-to manual for novices, but rather a guide for experienced backpackers. It offers a wide range of backpacking trips thoughout Oregon. The author rates each trip based on difficulty, solitude, and beauty, and highlights any special advantages or drawbacks to each trip.I was excited to read so many suggestions for varied new backpacking trips (and I have been backpacking in this state for 15 years!)His ratings are absolutely correct for the trips I have gone on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Backpackers Only!
If you are looking for a REAL backpacking trip guide - not daytrips - this is the best book I have seen for the diverse state of Oregon. It's unique organization style is by season, the perfect way to choose a trip in anarea of widely varying climates. It gives excellent, detailed descriptionsof 27 different trips, including elevation gains, difficulty, scenery, solitude and side trips. This is not a book for novices, no "howto's" here, just great trip analyses. Includes great maps and B/Wpictures. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
I bought this book and its companion Washington guide at the same time and have not been disappointed by either. The layout of the two books is similar and have all the info necessary to get to the trailhead, follow the trail, and enjoy the hikes. The maps are good and easy to follow, although elevation contours are not shown.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide!
This guide has good maps, accurate trail ratings (at least for the several places I've visited and know of), beautiful pictures, and a good guide for blooming season. It covers hikes that will take most of the day to ones that are little more than a rest stop with scenic walking paths.5-0 out of 5 stars With 52 "user friendly" maps and 52 plant life profiles
Filled cover to cover with 115 beautiful color photography of flowers, trails, and natural splendor, Oregon's Best Wildflower Hikes: Northwest Region is an amazing and informative guide showcasing 51 day hikes for prime wildflower viewing of such stunning visual beauty that it is a wonder for both avid hikers and armchair travelers alike. 2-0 out of 5 stars Fun collection of hikes, but the book itself is weak
Great idea for a book- put together a list of hikes that makes it easy to decide what to do outdoors on a surprise sunny day off that are a short drive from a large urban area. Alas, the devil is in the details- the writing is adequate (you'd have to be a pretty poor writer to blow it in a three paragraph description) but the editing is atrocious. When compared to a Falcon Press, Nauvilus, or Mountaineers Book, it is obvious that the publisher has no clue about the subject matter. For example, it's organized strangely- hikes are organized by placename, not physical location. (Since the book's premise is based on a geographic organization, I would have assumed that it would have come naturally)
5-0 out of 5 stars These are enthusiastically recommended excursions
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles by hiking expert and travel writer Paul Gerald showcases a full sixty superbly developed trails within an hour's drive of Portland, Oregon. These are enthusiastically recommended excursions that offer mountain views, forest solitudes, magnificent waterfalls, and wonderful ocean beaches. From flower-filled meadows on Saddle Mountain to a spectacular view of Multnomah Falls (the highest in the state), 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles is additionally enhanced with a list of hikes appropriate for children, ideal for wildlife watching, impressive for multi-use, seclusion, and local history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A marvelous read, especially for a hiking guide
Over the past 25 years I've bought dozens of Pacific Northwest hiking guides and this is just about the most enjoyable one I've ever owned. It is about the only hiking guide I've ever sat down and systematically read from cover to cover, simply because it was such a joy to read and because it contained so many treasures. The author isn't merely interested in telling you how to get there and how not to miss a turn in the trail, but he shows a genuine love for each of these hikes, pointing out what is amazing about each of them, often giving a little history about the trail or other anecdotes associated with a hike, including personal experiences which are genuinely amusing or informative. I especially enjoy his appreciation of trails through old growth forests, something you don't often see in hiking guides. Most hiking guides seem to get worked up only by big, expansive views, but this author sees beauty and magnificence on all scales. Although I was familiar with at least half of these hikes, I learned about a lot of new ones that I've already started exploring. For example, check out the old growth noble firs along the PCT from Barlow Pass to the overlooks at White River Canyon. These trees are absolutely mind-boggling, not because they're big around but because they grow so amazingly tall and straight. It stimulated me to read more about these trees and I learned that they can soar into such heights with so little girth because the wood is hard and light. No Douglas Fir could get this tall without putting six feet of girth on themselves. Here you see flawless, branchless trunks as straight as nature can make them, no more than three to four feet in diameter with no perceptible taper rising two hundred feet like the pillars in a cathedral before finally displaying a puff of foliage at the top no more than 15 feet wide and 30 feet tall. And then the emerald forest of moss-infested silver firs and mountain hemlocks that follow closer to timberline have the head shaking in wonder over such stunning beauty. Thanks to this author, I discovered this incredibly beautiful section of trail after hiking all over Mt. Hood for 25 years without having discovered it. There are lots of other new possibilities of this magnitude for me that I am eager to try out, thanks to the enthusiasm and attention to detail of this author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
The guide provides excellent trail information for novice and experienced hikers embarking on a day trip or longdistance excursion. Includes hiker's checklist, glossary, rules for low-impact wilderness recreation.I recommend both the book and the trails. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to the Columbia River Gorge
There are few places on earth as majestic as the Columbia River Gorge, and fewer still with its wide variety of climate zones. At the west end one finds temperate mid-latitude forests of ancient fir, while at the east end high desert with scrub oak predominate. There are few places in the world where the weather varies as dramatically over such a short distance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
My, then girlfriend now wife, and I spent 2 days in the Columbia Gorge this was one of two books that we had on the area and this was the one that we used the most.I just wish it would tell you what the waterfall on the cover was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to Gorge hikes
If you love hiking and live in the Columbia Gorge area (or plan to pass through) this is a nice guide to have. I learned of hiking trails I didn't know existed and the Gorge seems to have plenty of them. Each hike is listed with a general description, the distance of the trail, how much traffic of people to expect there, the best season to go, the elevation gain and maximum elevation. A map is shown and directions to the hike are given along with detailed description of the hike. Many black and white photographs show views from the various hikes. My one disappointment with this book is that the Deschutes River trail that is branched off directly from the Columbia River Gorge is not mentioned in this book, because it is east of The Dalles; this book only mentions the trails from Portland to The Dalles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best hiking book!
This is simply the best hiking books I've ever owned (and I own a lot!) A great selection of hikes, well written descriptions and directions, and excellent maps.I've been on over 30 of Sullivan's recommended hikes and enjoyed them enormously. The photos are beautiful.Get this book, get out and enjoy the wilderness!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fond memories exist because of this book
I bought all three books that Mr. Sullivan has written about the Cascades, but I never got a chance to try out all the trails.I just moved from Eugene, and just before I left, at the end of the summer, I got a chance togo to Bryce Creek outside Cottage Grove. What a hidden secret. The areawas beautiful, lots of small waterfalls, not too far from the main road, and I even took my little car up to Bohemia Mountain and had an incredibleview!I am glad that one of my last activites in my home state was goingto this place, all thanks to Mr. Sullivan! He knows what he is talkingabout, so buy this book and explore your state! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best day or through hike book I've seen for California coast
This is the best book I have seen for showing in detail where to hike on the California coast, fromthe Oregon border to the bottom of Monterey county.Other books talk about restaurants, inns, city walks or bigtrails, but don't take you to the trail head and tell you where to turnleft and how far to the next marker.Besides being a real trail guide(even telling where this "coastal trail" has not been completedand how to keep going anyway) the book has interesting history andanecdotes. I have looked at dozens of books on the coast, and this one isTHE BEST. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Oregon's Green Anarchists Guide to a Socialist Land Grab
I thought I was buying a guide book to Eastern Oregon's wild country. Instead, I received a book filled with "greenpropaganda", superficial information, misguided objectivety, and a warped perspective into what the "Eco Terrorists" agenda truly is for Eastern Oregon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover some of the most remote country in the lower 48
Having the privelege and good fortune to live in the northwest part of the country, I submit that in total, the Oregon High Desert may well be the most spectacular of all, in a region of superlative land and seascapes. It's certainly the most remote and unknown to the general public, in any case.Read more
