4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good motivator
Thought this book helped to motivate me on the 10,000 step goal even though at times it was fairly unrealistic to think one would move to the city in the interest of taking more steps! It lays out a six week program that is realistic and achievable.I feel better already 3 weeks into it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me in Europe
I am an American who lived in Europe for about 8 years. I walked everywhere, probably 4 or more miles a day. I weighed about 180 back then. I now live in the U.S. (Dallas) and weigh about 192. I can tell you, walking works. My dad told me when he visited me in Europe how fit I was and thin. I ate all the same "fatty" foods as now, and drank as much beer, but I still was thinner, because I walked so much. This book shows you how to do it. I now have a pedometer on my belt and I try to get the "gold standard" of about 9,500 steps a day, which is the average in central Europe. I know this works, because I did it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking is thebest Medicine(Hippocrates)
This important walking recommendation and lifestyle advice was already given around 450 BC by the classic Greek physician Hippocrates. "Pedometer Walking" is a very welcome and timely book by experts to update this advise with the help of a modern stepcounter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too scientific for most, but the best overal resource
If you have a significant interest in Avalanche science and theory, or are going to take an avalanche course this is the book for you.If you are looking to create advanced Avy skills and/or to become an Avy professional though this is the definative resource on Avalanches. It is required reading for most courses (starting with avy 1).
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction to avalanche theory.
For backcountry enthusiasts with a science background, this book provides a thorough introduction to avalanche theory. The book is divided into chapters which build a solid foundation (weather systems, snow structure)through snowpack basics (snow strength and deformation, snowpack structure)and well into more advanced concepts (snowpack analysis, avalancheprediction, search and rescue, and even control with explosives, etc.) Itis an excellent, if heavy, read and I found it a valuable resource in thedevelopment of an intro avalanche course. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of California Camping?
Maybe this Foghorn publication, California Camping by Tom Steinstra, is the bible of camping, at least for California, but it probably needs another good scrubbing or at least an editor.I have purchased this book twice, 03 and 05 editions, and a few things changed, e.g., when the listing for Palomar Mtn SP mentioned that Reserve America honored this park as one its Top 200 Family Campgrounds. This was a nice addendum to the last edition. But, in some cases, the editors, more than Steinstra, need to make the rounds, at least at the more popular sites. For example, California Camping mentions that El Capitan SB has one of the "best fishing" sites, but from what we have understood over the last few years is that fishing no longer even takes place in the nearby stream - due mostly to drought.Though, if someone said El Capitan is the best for Dolphin watching that would be entirely accurate. Also, Tillie Creek is rated "9" for scenery, apparently, but all the upper front and near the lake sites were closed this year not to mention there is no "creek running" in the summer. However, this book has proven over and over to be accurate in about 90% plus of its content which is great when you have kids.A couple of suggestions might help if, for example, in addition to the scenery rating, could there just be an overall rating, i.e. 1-10 based on Steinstra's standards or the type of campground? And, could the editors create a means by which campers and readers could report their findings back to the publisher? Could the editors make sure to get an accurate update from park rangers, agencies, and private campsites for any basic changes that might have occurred? Okay, so no matter what I say, California Camping is probably the best camping guide out there, in my opinion.I just would like author, editor, and publisher to make it a bit more current and relevent for the next edition, which, of course,I will most likely purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and personal
I can't speak for the person who disagreed with some of the ratings. In my experience, this is an invaluable reference, and the personal descriptions of each campground are extremely helpful. Few references will go the extra mile to provide ratings and personal observations about each site like this one does. It's clear that the author has actually visited most of these sites, which is not always the case. It's a great book, and the anecdotes & camping advice in the introduction are very well-written. This book covers every kind of campsite in California, from hike-in primitive sites to RV parking lots. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I have actually purchased this book twice now, once about 10 years ago and it was the best book then! then I lost the book in the Cedar fire in 2003.Now we are ready to go camping again, so what book did I look for? That's right, the Complete Guide but realized it had been burned like all the others. So I quickly purchased it again, and upon its receipt and review am amazed at all the new campsites he has added and all the fantastic information! The one thing I miss-all my notes I had made in the other book! Oh well, time to start the new one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but rather technical
Love the book and it's advice but yes, it IS technical and there is alot to go through. Great for general guidelines and specific advice on particular sports and exercises. Plenty of stuff you can do at home if you don't have access to a gym. I'd recommend it to anyone in training!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overall Guidance & Specific Training Tips
The word "comprehensive" seems very fitting for "Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness" because the volume packs in a lot of background information on physiology as well as specific training regimens for particular outdoor sports.I particularly value the icons for different sports used to identify exercises that are particularly valuable for the sport you are preparing for.The final chapters provide focused training regimens for specific sports, which are cross-referenced to the exercise descriptions found in other parts of the book. The book also provides valuable tips on functional exercises that focus on combinations of muscle groups to achieve more practical training than the muscle isolation process used in many weight training machines. All in all, this is one of the very best I've seen for sport-focused training.

2-0 out of 5 stars Take it in moderation
The book is clear and describes a lot of interesting exercises but doesn't translate into a realistic program.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "big little book"
As a longtime Alaskan, I feel fortunate to have had both Doug and Jill in many courses. The book Snow sense is now the required reading material for all Nat'l Ski Patrol avalanche courses, and rightly so. I read it at thebegining of every season. True avalanche professionals. If you ever havethe chance, come to Alaska and take one of their courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sidebar Information Erroneous/Out of Date
As the author of "The Complete Guide to Easter Island" (Easter Island Foundation, 2004), I recently read with keen interest the sidebar "The Incas and Easter Island" in the 2005 edition of "The Inca Trail" (p.97) and thought readers would find it helpful to know that the information in the sidebar is significantly out of date. In one case, it is completely erroneous.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for the parks it covers, but doesn't cover enough
I found the information in this book much more useful than any other travel guide I have purchased. The lodging information for Yellowstone, for example, describes the state of specific room types at each location!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I really like this book. While it is supposedly geared for kids, Ithink it's very useful for finding interesting things to do at National Parks for everybody.I don't know why I didn't know this - but when I looked at the table of contents I realized just how few National Parks there are in the East. One side effect of reading this book is that it's made me realize what a precious resource these National Parks are to all of us, and it makes me wonder why there aren't more of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics for surviving and maybe even thriving!
Great book (well, 10 books) with an easy to understand narrative style liberally illustrated with pretty good black and white photos.Sure the authors won't win any grammar awards, but that's not the point of this book. This book belongs in everyone's survival kit right next to a good knife and maybe a flint & steel - the information inside might just save your life one day. Thanks John & Geri!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best out there.
I've studied, practiced, and taught wilderness survival on and off for around ten years, now. I've read an enormous amount of material on the subject of survival; some of it is quite good (Brown Jr., Wiseman, Davenport, among others), some of it is at best mediocre (e.g., FM 21-76).
1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly disappointed: not a good "first book"
It is rare for me to feel almost completely negative about a publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
After hearing about Yossi Ghinsberg on the Discovery Channel's show "I Shouldn't Be Alive" I had to pick up his book and get the details. I was enthralled from the first page. As astonishing as Mr. Ghinsburg's experiences are - and believe me, there were many times I felt like he wasn't going to make it, even though I knew he had lived to write the book - what truly stands out in my memory is the way the writing took me into the jungle with him. His storytelling is rich with descriptions and details. It left me feeling triumphant, as though I had been rescued with him, and incredibly grateful for all of the blessings and comforts in my life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I had the privilege of meeting Yossi at an international event that I had attended and it touched me to meet him in person after such a harrowing experience. He has definitely humbled and has become more spiritual and I guess thats what becomes of people who go through such unbelievable and miraculous escapes in life.
3-0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, but lacking.
I sat down and read this book in an almost entirely uninterrupted 6 hour sitting. That's how thrilling it was.It is an amazing story. However, my only critique is that it felt all for nothing by the end.Yossi spoke only of the survival, but nothing of the questions provoked throughout his journey. The reader is forced to question and experience some hard things: the nature of man, the nature of the jungle, why or how mother nature manipulates the mind, the body and then swallows it or spits it out.The very nature of survival is constantly at bat.I found his experiences incredibly difficult to face even in the comforts of my bedroom, and relished the opportunity to explore these tough questions with him - someone who looked at them in the eye in the darkness of a barbaric existence. But I felt almost that he had led me to that place and then left me at a dead end. It's not that Yossi does not necessarily have some answers, or at least has not attempted to answer some of those hard realities. If you look at his website, it seems as if he has come to many conclusions and at least adopted a variety of "slogans" for them.In spite of this, I was disappointed that the book left me hanging there. There were various opportunities to discuss the nature of his predicament, but in the end, I did not learn from it.Except perhaps never to go into the Amazon with a man named Karl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, lively, and fun
It looks big, scholarly, and intimidating. It is big, scholarly, lively, fascinating, and fun.(I had it on the shelf for several years, afraid to bring it down because it was so thick. But once I started reading it -- short chapters, lively prose, cogent discussions -- I wished it were longer because I didn't want it to end.)Although obstensibly a history of trail-building in America's northeast, it is just as much a story of humanity's relation with the environment -- and in this role it is far more trenchant and closely reasoned than Simon Schama's "Landscape and Memory".When I started, I thought I would like only those chapters about mountain regions where I had already hiked, but in fact I found the chapters on regions I hadn't yet hiked to be even more fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on Hiking in New England!
A friend turned me on to this book.I had passed on it a few times due in part to it's huge size. However I found that it was everything I ever wanted to know about the mountains and forests of New England. It's written in a very accesible manner that never leaves the reader without a smile for long. It's very obvious that the text contained in this book was researched with an artists attention to detail. And it shows in the nearly 200 pages of appendix!5-0 out of 5 stars Forest &Crag
This book is a great indepth look at mountainiering in the northeastern United States. It has to be the most complete history of the northeast mountains. It starts back when Darby Fields and many others started toexplore the area, and runs through the nineteen eighties. Laura and GuyWaterman researched for ten years in order to put this book together.Theyare both acomplished writers and have a way of making a history excitingand humorous. It is a great tribute to the early settlers of the area andhow hearty they were.I recomend this book to anyone who has done somehiking in the northeastern United States or are just interested in thehistory of the land. This is a must buy for all serious northeasternmountainiers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!
We recently completed a four-month motorhome trip to Alaska. We had several books with us, but the most consistent good information came from this book. The campground descriptions were right on. In addition to camping, when we had to decide whether to see one attraction vs another, the book's advice was invaluable. Don't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you travel to Alaska in an RV, you need this book.
We bought several books to travel to Alaska in 2006.The milepost and this book were the only two we used.It is much easier to find a campground each night using this book over the milepost. The price information and personal recommendations were very helpful and accurate. I highly recomend it if you travel to alaska RV or camp in a tent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
We used this book daily on our 20 day trip to Alaska in 2006.Each day I would look to see what campgrounds/RV parks were located in the area we were coming into for the night. The ratings were very accurate and helpful. We were never disappointed.I wouldn't go to Alaska without this book if you are planning on camping! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes basic is best....
I have many walking tapes, but sometimes I just want the encouragement without all the blather. This CD set a very nice pace, and I found Rita "speaking up" periodically helped to keep me focus when I started to drift off.One advantage to this over my iPod playlist is sometimes the music beat is too fast, and I'll get so caught up in the increased tempo that I risk straining something.I bought 2 more copies for family members.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Healthy Heart Walking CD
This was a waste of money.I wishI could exchange it for a more effective CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting out and walking
I find I get bored easily when out walking,so the Healthy Heard Walking CD seems to keep me focused and gives me a goal to look forward to.I would recommend it as a useful tool for getting out of the house and moving! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A good observer of nature, walking, say, in an oak forest, may discern that some of the acorns on which he or she is treading are broken into little bits. After reading wildlife interpreter and photographer Paul Rezendes's guidebook to animal signs, that same observer will be able to tell which of those acorns have been split by human footsteps and deer hooves and which have been gnawed apart by squirrels--and by what species of squirrel. A wonderfully thorough, well-illustrated compendium, Rezendes's text covers a wide range of North American animal species, including rodents, hoofed animals, bears, raccoons, opossums, and members of the weasel, rabbit, dog, and cat families. He describes not only the signs these animals leave but also their ways of life throughout the year, and with an appropriately environmentalist purpose. "Ultimately," Rezendes writes, "tracking an animal makes us sensitive to it--a bond is formed, an intimacy develops. We begin to realize that what is happening to the animals and to the planet is actually happening to us." He's right, of course, but one need not take such a macrocosmic view of nature to take pleasure in, and learn from, this fine book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
This book provides an excellent introduction to reading animal tracks. In the first chapter the author explains why we should try to understand the tracks around us in the forest, and what we might see.He then delves into the kinds of observations we need to make, such as trail widths and trail patterns and scat. The rest of the book is divided into chapters by animal family, including chapters for rodents, rabbits, weasels, dogs, cats, bears, and hoofed animals. There is also an extensive bibliography and index.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tracking Book to Be Found
This is a truly magnificent tracking book. The book has no pseudo-spiritual dribble about tracking ants across rocks or pressure points; it is full of useful information, and it is clear that the author is as genuine of an expert naturalist as they get. He shares an incredible wealth of information on how to examine and analyze the wilderness from a microcosmic level. The photography is outstanding and thedescriptions of animal signs are excellent.Being a survival instructor, I have read many fine books on tracking animals and observing their signs, but I have never read one that I learned more from than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Choice
I do a lot of tracking, both animal and human. I have read most books on the subject in print. This book is excellent for the beginner and expert and focuses on animal tracking. Rezendez helps the tracker learn both the animals track characteristics and its living habits. If I had to recommend only one book on tracking, this would be it, hands down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lose Weight by Walking: Tour Your City on Foot
This book could only be improved by more photos of the georgeous landscaping in and around Portland, Oregon. The cover shows four beautiful photos which the Amazon cover shot misses (you can hardly make them out), which is more than enough to whet the appetite.
