5-0 out of 5 stars magnifique!
Tres amusant. I enjoyed using this book to explore the most beautiful city in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great walks with amazing details`
I used this book for my recent trip to Paris.Out of all the walks we took my favorites were martmartre and le marais.I photocopied all the walks I wanted to take prior to the trip so I didn't have to carry the book everywhere and the map and words are in larger print this way.My boyfriend is a great navigator but I think combining the narrative with the map most people should have no problem following the route. We did have to retrace our steps a couple times but it really was pretty simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide!
Having been to Paris many, many times, I pretty much know my way around. I purchased this book for my last trip, to help my friend -a first time parisian- find her way around. Surprisingly, though, it was me who ended up enjoying the book the most. Very well-thought walks, easy to spot places and landmarks but thorough and interesting enough to take you off the beaten path and show you the real Paris, the charming, lively city beyond the tourist attractions. My favourite walks are Faubourg St-Germain and St-Germain-des-Pres and the ones through the Latin Quarter. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book, Easy Reading, Difficult Directions
I was so excited when I found a book of this nature.I love waterfalls and swimming holes so I swooped up the book.I knew of some of the places in the book already, such as University Falls. The directions he gives tothat place would have someone drowing in the Rubicon before findingUniversity Falls. One day my best friend and I packed up the kids and setout for another destination in the book.We spent most of the morningtrying to find the trailhead-and the other part of the day getting losttrying to find the swimming hole. The kids were whinning, hot and tired andwe were disappointed if not straight up mad!We found a guy who lived inthe area who laughted very hard when he read the directions (straight outof the book).Just about everything was incorrect.Wrong forest roadnumber, wrong forest road, didn't bother to mention several turn offs, andit wouldn't have mattered if we were on the right road because the roadindicated didn't really go where Doll stated it did.If you have GPSyou're in luck. You're gonna need it.At the end of each chapter Dolllists Why Bother places. Doll doesn't included directions or pictures forthose places but I managed to find a few on my own and they were gorgeous! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Any Outdoor Leader needs to read it
I'm an Eagle Scout from troop 572 of Carolina Puerto Rico, and all the leadership skill that I learn during my best time of my life is in that book.3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe Fewer Stars for Corporate Use
I purchased this book for analagous use in a large corporation. It contains many useful insights and guidelines for leadership. Unfortunately, the author's attempt to generalize the definition of the term "pucker factor" is not enough to overcome the term's original anatomical meaning, hence making it questionable for corporate use. This conclusion is based on interpretations of the term from employees I surveyed. A more neutral term like "stress factor" would make it a perfect metaphorical book for use in corporations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for Business and Outdoors
No wasted words or soapbox sermons here. I've been leading and following for years and found the concepts in this book to be direct and effective, and, if applied, sure to make a difference in all areas of yourlife--professionally and personally. Some of the concepts are so simple youwill wonder why you haven't already been utilizing them. A quick read and agood value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for getting you started in hiking California
I hiked 5 trails from this book so far, and all of them have been spectacular. The rating and description of the trails are very accurate. I'm currently in the process of planning more hikes from this book. My only complaint is that the map of all the hikes does not contain and road information, so it was a bit of a pain to try to place where exactly the hike is. We were in Yosemite this past weekend, and had to cross reference the trail map to our road map to determine if the trail was nearby yosemite or inside. Other than that, the hikes were great (in the bay area and the sierra nevada). I'm thinking about buying a couple of falcon guide specific to certain places. If you just getting into hiking, I would definitely recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for using maps, compass & GPS effectively!
The second edition of Land Navigation Handbook (2005) is the best book I have read on the subject of navigation. The explanations andexpert guidance on choosing and using a compass, the distinction between magnetic and true north, choosing and using a GPS unit, how GPS works and its limitations (not just for north America but for other parts of the world as well) are definitely worth reading.I have learned a lot from this book. The book is not for land navigation only, it is also an indispensable aid for marine navigation.I sincerely think every sailor should have one in his sailboat (it measures only 8" x 4.5" x 0.5") as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vastly improved! The new standard for navigation books.
The new edition brings this classic book up to date with digital mapping and GPS technology. It retains much of the content and flavor of the original text yet adds a great deal of material that is helpful today. This handbook teaches the basics of map, compass, and GPS with clear langauage while offering advanced outdoors folks detailed information and tips (there's even information for adventure racers, geocachers, and sea kayakers). The new info, illustrations, and photos make this the best navigation book on the market for anyone who plays in the outdoors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated and Outdated
It's beyond me why people recommend this book for first-time backcountry hikers who want to learn how to read a map and use a compass.Even the old time-encrusted 'Be Expert With Map and Compass' book is easier to use, and that's saying something!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wayne Goddard's $50 knife shop
My best basic book, will answer all your questions, and will get you started and on your way,if you are not new to knife building it will reinforce you knowledge even more..

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth more than $50
I was hesitant on ordering this book, I've read or bought almost everything I can find relating to bladesmithing or blacksmithing.I got the book, and read it from front to back, then read it again. This book not only offers insight on how to make needed equipment, but also explains how to make knives of both stock removal, forging and wire damascus.I've never read a book on this subject where it felt like the author was talking directly to me, explaining things that I was thinking. This book is definitely one for the beginner smith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I got this book last night and have read it cover to cover.Wayne gives great confidence to the beginner.Just the simple fact that you don't have to go broke to make knives is very fullfilling. Some great shop tips and good ways of looking at shop problems.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages
The Collins Gem edition of this survival manual is a perfect size for packing along.Kids also gravitate to it for the same reason - it is really, really cute.It is also available in a standard book-sized edition, which is easier to read and study at your leisure, but not nearly as nice to pack. The small print may prove difficult to read in low light situations, but of course, after you've boned up on your survival skills, you'll be prepared to light a fire for warmth and light to read by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy a few and give them to your friends!
You really don't have to have a 'need' for this book to find it entertaining. If you're the curious type, this has everything, from how to maim someone using only your own eyelash to how to trap, skin and cook an aardvark to more than enough reasons why you don't want to go outside, ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Detailed
The SAS handbook is a wealth of remarkably useful information and startlingly devised survival techniques.Survival, in the most literal sense, is something the ordinary person needn't worry about these days. However, exploring the ingenuity of mans survival skills can prove exciting and intriguing. This handbook addresses so much survival knowledge that I have read it through and through numerous times over the years, and I still seem to be surprised whenever I dust it off for a browse.Great book... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended first book for new knifemakers
Wayne's first version of this book was the first knifemaking book i purchased.Wayne has guided me and been my mentor and friend from the first (approx 4 yrs ). This latest version is one of the best books a beginner could get.All the fotos and diagrams are in color which greatly helps in understanding the lessons. It has new fotos and diagrams all in color. Although this book has approx same number of pages as the original, it seems to contain 50% more info in it. I would reccommend this book to all knifemakers...beginner and experienced.Definitely a 5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginners
I own both editions of this book. Wayne is a personal friend, and my mentor in knifemaking. It can be intimidating to read some publications and see all the high-tech machinery that some makers use. This book shows that people can develope their passion for making knives without spending a fortune. It is clear and concise, and takes alot of the guesswork out of being a beginner. Wayne learned knifemaking by trial and error, before there were books, magazines and videos on the subject. This book is a must have in the library of any knifemaker. I read mine constantly for reference and inspiration.

very helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the LOCAL Idaho/Montana/Wyoming Regular
I live about 90 miles from Jackson and 100 from West Yellowstone, so I go to both parks a lot.As a teacher, I have my summers to go camp and hike from time to time, and I just got back from a trip today. While at Lake Hotel, I chanced on this book, and bought it.This was yesterday. The book has 45 different trails in it to hike in Yellowstone and the Tetons (though most are in Yellowstone).I went ahead and hiked one yesterday (Elephant Back) and got a great view of Yellowstone Lake. The directions were very clear and there were guide-points along the route in the book so I knew just where I was.The book even mentioned this is Grizzly habitat in the spring/early summer, and sure enough, when I got down from the hike, there was a bear. This kind of information could be a lifesaver to the inexperienced Yellowstone or Teton hiker.Today, I hiked two more hikes in the book, one short one at West Thumb and a longer one at Biscuit Basin up to a waterfall and overlook. This book is very easy to use, has great maps, grades the difficulty of each hike, and has a variety from hikes under a mile to hikes of over twenty that take several days.My goal, using this excellent book, is to hike them all in a year or so.Great photos, durable cover, great maps. This is the perfect book for locals or for tourists who come often or who are planning a two to three week stay.I would not think it would be good for someone visiting for a day or two, as you could not scratch the surface of this gold mine of information. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Pnusual Perspective of Yellowstone
The author paints a picture of fatalities in Yellowstone which ,for the most part, shows the foolishness of some visitors to this beautiful national park.Whether it be animal attacks, falls, drownings, thermal scaldings or just plain carelessness Lee Whittlesey relates over 100 years of what can happen when humans don't respect the dangers of a wonderful natural environment. It is a fine historical account taken from an unusual persective. It is worth reading for those who have been to Yellowstone or are planning a trip there in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nature is real, and it can be dangerous
Growing up in southeast Alaska, I've heard stories of tourists chasing a bear cub down the road near the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau as well as a tourist getting bitten while trying to feed a sandwich to a bear.I've been yelled at by a tourist for clapping and making noise to alert bears to my presence while hiking because they were concerned they would not see a bear with all the noise I was making (well, that is the point). With my experience with how dumb tourists can be in Alaska, I was interested to find out stories of tourists and others in Yellowstone.
5-0 out of 5 stars It never fails to amaze me how dumb some people are
I grew up near YNP.I have worked at Old Faithful Inn.I've visted the park so many times I've lost count. And during my most recent visit in Aug 05, I saw a whole assortment of tourons behaving badly.I've seen people walk up to geysers, stick their hands in hot pools, attempt to pet elk and bison, and drive like they're weaving around LA.For some reason, it never sinks in that Yellowstone is not a rocky mountain Disneyland.

3-0 out of 5 stars For serious adventure camping only!
This book is great for people who want to go pitch a tent up in the hills, but only has a few things to say to those who are headed to the local campground for a family weekend. If you need to know where not to pitch a tent to avoid flash floods, or how to consolidate everything you need into a small compact carry bag, then this is for you.

I am a relatively experienced camper and backpacker, though by no means an expert. I have browsed lots of similar titles in bookstores, but Camping for Dummies offered the most detail, tips and understandable advise of any. The writer's style is humorous and easy-to-read and his obviously experienced advise has proved invaluable on numerous weekend camping trips already. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about camping, or simply anyone who wants to pick up some more tips and skills so you feel more like Indiana Jones when outdoors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Short book but many interesting stories
McPherson does a great job setting the scene of the events that took place at Gettyburg. It's obvious he knows his stuff. My recommendation is to read this before going to the battlefield and then read it after. You can even take the tour he suggests throughout. I didn't have the time to take his tour--I used an audio CD--but it's worth it either way. He has good side-stories that make the scenes come alive. This is highly recommended.

This is a great little book...the title says it all, it is exactly what you get but with personality.I have only been to Gettysburg once, and only for a couple hours. While there I had wished for some additional info to be available, to better understand the event that place there over 100 years ago. That battle helped shape and define our country, but the facts would be lost if not for writers like James Mcpherson. The book literally walks you thru each battlefront and adds personal touches to make it more than a history book.If you have never been to Gettysburg, this book will surely inspire you to visit the site.If you have been there, like me, it can only enhance your memories and provide detail that is easily overlooked. And, it has inspired me make plans to return to Gettysburg, but with book in hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book before you visit the battlefield
I got this book in the mail from Amazon the week I was leaving for Gettysburg - good thing it was so short and to the point. It took 2 nights to read, but it was very well written and did a great job of explaining the things to look for on the battlefield while also giving a pretty good overview of the different aspects of the battle itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be lost without it!
If it's your first time in Yellow Stone or the Grand Tetons this'll be your bible .. the hikes listed in both places are well presented and with the maps included will help you plan you time in this wonderful part of the world .. The information on where you are likely to spot animals is really useful - Elk, Bison, Moose and Bear ... all accurate! The highlights and intineraries suggested helped with planning the trip.. but in addition to the traditional 'must sees' the book also suggests some wonderful off the beaten track experiences as well. Has info on where to stay and eat ..I stayed outside the park and would recommend either Teton Village or Jackson Hole as a good base with lots of top class accomodation. For European travellers Jackson Hole was the only place that I could get a mobile phone signal!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Guide To the Tetons and Yellowstone
For one contemplating a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons this book will be a fine handbook and guide. It is very detailed in regards to information about the parks and offers the reader a fine source of information for things to do on your visit.

2-0 out of 5 stars As a backup source
For general planning of our trip, this book provided some useful information but the book does not give enough detail for a day to day planner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Complicated
All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive).I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook
This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great receipes, assumes basic skill however
I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen.I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that. ...
