5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
'Awol on the Appalachian Trail' is, quite simply, a wonderful book from start to finish.I have to say that it is one of the most enjoyable, honest, and inspiring accounts that I have read in a long time. This is the best book on the AT that I have yet found.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spot On
I thru-hiked the AT myself in '02 and can tell you this book does a great job of relaying what the experience is all about. David does a great job of balancing his account without getting too whimsical or too grounded. If your looking for an honest account of the rewards and hardships that one gets when they drop out of society for months and hike over 2000 miles, then you've found your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great account of a thru hike
I found Miller's account of his thru hikegave me a taste of both the agony and ecstasy involved. I felt it was an objective account of this true life adventure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular visuals, excellent text
This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA.A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents.Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.

Paul Schullery presents a book filled with powerful and beautiful images of fifty-six national parks that have been dedicated to the preservation and protection of irreplaceable treasures. This book shows why these parks are so worthy of protection. Read more

Editorial Review

If David Muench's photographs of U.S. parks and monuments fail to take your breath away, you may want to check your pulse. If they fail to inspire you to visit Canyonlands, Acadia, Big Bend, or the Great Smoky Mountains, you have something to answer for. Muench has inspired a whole generation of landscape photographers with his images, which border on the mystical; he in turn takes his inspiration from the "primal beauty" of these treasures, which are places of worship to him. Muench makes it evident in an afterword that he is not a verbal communicator; perhaps that is to our advantage, for it forces him to express himself with the camera. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nature's Glory" would be a better title
Despite the seemingly mediocre title of this book, the pictures are anything but average. Here, you will find landscapes of various different types and beauty, from rugged cliffs to lush forests and waterfalls. The natural beauty of this book will challenge anyone who believes that photography is not an art, as Meunch has an unbelievable talent for it. In fact, while Udall is a good essay writer, I would even go so far as to say that Meunch should be credited as the author here. Not only does he capture breathtaking images, but his perspective is amazing as well, particularly in his forest photos. The forest section of the book perfectly represents the vastnessof the trees, making me feel as though I'm a nymph or some other woodland creature marveling at the majesty around me. Whether you are a nature lover or have never appreciated it before, I recommend you get this book now!

5-0 out of 5 stars National Parks of America
"National Parks of America" is a wonderful collection of photographs from the National Parks in the United States. David Muench does a marvelous job capturing some of the the most beautiful places in the United States. His photographs include the Alaskan National Parks, the Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods in Redwood National Park, the giant sequoias in Sequoia National Park, the natural bridges in the national parks in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Isle Royale in Michigan, and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. There is a map of all of the places in the National Park System, and an essay by Stewart L. Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy and Johnson, and James R. Udall. I cannot recommend this book enough. You must see it to fully understand what an outstanding book it truly is. It made me want to visit these places as soon as possible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for the experienced runner and novice walker
As I read this book (I am beginning a walking program), I became very honored to read about all the blood, sweat, and tears Ms. Switzer went through during her career as a runner. She makes you feel you are with her during those times. Her advice is sound, professional, and in your best interest. If you listen to what she tells you, i.e., how your shoes and clothes should fit; how you should start out on your program; and the wonderful advice to "get you out the door," you willhave a very long and rewarding running/walking program, that can and will enhance your life. This book has really changed my outlook, my exercise capacity, and pretty much my overall health! Thanks for writing this book, Ms. Switzer. I owe you big time!Sandy, in Florida.

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors
This book comes across as poorly edited and researched.Contains mispelled words and incorrect statements such as "air is 80% oxygen".It is also hard for a beginning runner to relate to a marathoner who has run for almost her entire life.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING AND SENSIBLE! BRAVO!
I hadn't run for 17 years and never ran more than 3.5 miles. (I'm 40.)With the help of this book, I am up to 5 miles (and counting!).The book is easy to read. The program is easy to follow. However, this book is for people who are basically in good health and who like to exercise. The book will not GIVE you motivation, it will simply help you if you are already somewhat motivated and want to get in better shape.I have followed her advice, gotten great results and enjoyed the process. This book has been worth a million to me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous photo essay of Paris then and now--finally in English!
Leonard Pitt's book "Walks Through Lost Paris" is amazing. In it he chronicles changes made to Paris in the interest of modernization during the Haussmann era (mid 19th century) and later. The changes are documented with abundant before and after photos, allowing you to literally see for yourself how Paris has evolved over the past 150 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about great hiking in a beautiful location
This is an excellent resource for anyone planning a trip to Sedona. After 2 short visits to the red rock area, we went for a week this time.We had heard about the many hiking trails there, and we wondered how we would pick the ones we wanted regarding difficulty, length, and things to see.We spent hours reading the book before we went, while we drove, and while we were there. This book really does have valuable information for the hike about 130 area trails.Included are directions to the trailhead, map of the trail, and picture of the trail. Also are the length, difficulty, and time needed for each trail. This is a must read if you are going to Sedona to hike, and it makes a great remembrance of a wonderful trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Summary
I haven't tested any of the hikes yet, as my trip is a ways off. But, the desciptions appear honest and detailed. I like the thorough directions about how to find a trailhead. The idex is very well organized.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like Walker III better
It seems that Colin Fletcher has relinquished too much in this edition to his coauthor. Understandably he is no longer a gearhead and lets Chip Rawlins review equipment. Rawlins has at least as much text in these pages as Fletcher so be prepared for a different read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Plain and Simple...THE BACKPACKING BIBLE!!
Not only is this book a treasure trove of information, it is an absolute joy to read. I have grown up with this book and I have had every edition of it since it's inception. There are other very good backpacking books out there but this is still the best. Mr. Fletcher also did a great job of selecting Chip Rawlins to co write the book and inevitably carry the torch for future generations of backpackers. I am already looking forward to the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic of the first order. Buy It!
`The New Complete Walker' is one of those books which as probably never been outdone and probably never will be. It is easily in the same class, in my mind, as Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking', Donald Knuth's `The Art of Programming', and Snedecor and Cochrane's `Statistical Methods'. When this book was first published, it's author was a fairly notable celebrity, interesting enough to appear as a subject on `To Tell the Truth', but not quite recognizable enough to be unfamiliar to the contestant on that show. I still recall the book's being touted on several outlets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro Book
A very good book foe beginners and those new to geocaching.Gave us some hints and good suggestions for creating and hiding our own cache.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for complete idiots
I have a Ph.D. in philosophy but could not follow the descriptions in this book of how to use a compass and topo maps in conjunction with a GPS.I also was as confused after I finished reading the book as before I started about such questions as how to find something in a forest when the satellite connection doesn't work.On the other hand, the book does give a decent introduction to the sport and general procedures of geocaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Lost...or Having Fun While Getting Lost
My wife wanted me to become more active and knowing my desire to buy another electronic gadget, she suggested we look at geocaching. I had never heard of this activity before but since it meant getting a GPS unit, I figured "what the heck". Before making my purchase, I needed to know what to look for so i needed more information on the sport of geocaching. This book was the most informative book I found and was easy to read and hard to put down. I found the information extremely useful. And, yes, we have gone geocaching and have found our first 3 caches. Without the knowledge gained from reading this tome, I would still be out in the woods looking for my way home. ... Read more

This is an odd book for someone to buy that lives in a major metropolitan area. However, if you are interested in how things used to be done, and/or are looking for more control over the products that affect your family this is an interesting read.
3-0 out of 5 stars Country wisdon and know how
This is generally a good book for people wanting to know how to live off the land. I agree with the review I had read before I purchased the book that the print was small and hard to read. There's alot of good and interesting information in the book, but the print size is a draw-back.

4-0 out of 5 stars A mind-opening book about nature and the outdoors
I've read this book twice, and both times I've learned (and re-learned) to see and feel and experience more when I go outdoors, go camping, or take wilderness trips.
5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable guide to outer and inner awareness
This is an unusual book in which hard core tracking tips are blended with instructions on cultivation of the inner silence. As opposed to otherstories about tracking which border the domain of fiction (e.g., "The Way of the Scout"), Brown gives us in this Field Guide practical advice on reading animal tracks, constructing shelters etc.The tips on "Nature Observation"in this field guide are unsurpassed by any other tracking book I know. TB provides us with priceless descriptions of what happens the moment we enter the forest - that is, how the alarm signal spreads from the birds to mammals and how long it takes for it to subside. The forest he is talking about is a living entity, where everything is connected and where one can plug into the circuits of the information flow by learning to listen to the sounds, by studying the terrain and the wind and by knowing how to camouflage and mask one's smell. The book provides useful info on various types of walking/stalking in the woods. Finally, there is deep reverence for naturesomething which occurs when one has learnt to be silent amidst the whispering trees (no mean trick for the Westerner who tends to function through the head). Tom Brown has learnt the inner silence tricks from his Apache teacher ("the Grandfather") and trackers might find this book useful for learning more aboutNative American attitudes toward nature. A similar approach to nature is encountered in some of Paul Rezendes' books (which i also recommend). In short, this book will be useful to those who are interested in approaching nature on its own terms. It will inspire the beginners in tracking and complement knowledge of hard core SAR UTS trackers (:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Exiting!!!!!!!
This book gave me a renewed enthusiasm for nature and an urgent need to be outdoors, I wanted to do everything he was teaching as I was reading it.I went right out and practiced his techniques as soon as possible during and after reading this book. I've never seen so much wildlife as I do now.It has made me a better outdoorsman and has given more meaning to my time spent outdoors.I can't wait to share it with my father who taught me some basics of tracking when I was a boy. This book taught me all the stuff I wished I had learned long ago, now i must make up for lost time I spent with my eyes closed to the things that connect me with the earth. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars amazing hikes, erroneous details
This book is a perfect introduction to the wealth of hiking possibilities in patagonia - many of them are still significantly under-used and of equal calibre to the more famous routes. The general information sections are quite good, and give a good feel for what conditions are like both trekking and travelling in general; a good purchase for planning your trip. Where the book falls down is on the actual trekking notes, which are consistently inaccurate, obscenely outdated and sometimes quite misleading (see other reviews). On this front, Cerro Electrico is not safe - however Cerro Electrico Oeste is safely climbable without mountaineering equipment (although crampons are a nice idea) and gives mind-blowing views of the rear of Fitzroy - I think this might be what the author actually had in mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Unparallelled Resource
Like all Lonely Planet guides, Trekking in Patagonia is very much geared to independent trekkers. Considering how huge Patagonia is, the book covers it pretty thoroughly with a wide range of suggestions, from easy short walks right up to a few week-long ones. The text is strong on practical information like local transportation and accommodation and supplies wide coverage to flora and fauna, which is a real bonus. 5-0 out of 5 stars Well-done work
I am using the latest (thid ed.) on my second trip to South America. It an indispensable resource with very accurate text and maps which are quite accurate to use even if you you don't have a topo (yeah I know, but maps are not always easy to buy here). The routes carefuly prepared...this new edition has a whole lot of new trails. I'm also finding it up to date. One thing is maybe that the authors could have given better coverage to some areas such as the Pumalin. But this is more than enough material to spend a couple of summers down here anyhow, even if you just go for it! I definitely feel anyone that wants to trek in this region will be sorry if you don't have this book. Enjoy! Feel free to contact me privately for any info.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, offbeat
This collection is an idiosyncratic and appealing mix of off-the-beaten-path sights for the visitor to Portland, personal anecdotes of the author, and brief essays about the history of Portland and its defining vibes. Entertaining and enjoyable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't make you want to visit
Palahniuk puts you right into his world of an overgrown small town with its carnival attractions.
1-0 out of 5 stars a puking bore
As he writes in his epilogue, "This is not Portland, Oregon." Just scads of non-site-specific deegradation written in clipped New Yorker prose. Elliptical descriptions of perversion after perversion, spilling over the pages to become one big bore. And on top of all this, there's no index to the places he touches on, so even if you wanted to go there, you'd be hardput. Self-indulgent yet simultaneously unrevealing, as uninteresting a discovery of spirit of place as one can get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide, the rest is up to you....
Very good, short, easy to read book. Mc Evoy shows you the techniques for throwing a knife accurately. Reading this book will point you in the right direction. Afterwards practice, and lots of it is what is going to make yougood at it. The only reason i deducted one star is because since the bookwas written in 1973 I believe, some of the info on Knife throwingaffiliations, etc.. is outdated. Nonetheless, good, concise, andinformative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice!Practice!Practice!
Not only does this book explain the snap , you must have to actually stick a knife and show all the fundamentals and learning secrets, but it also goes in depth for the intermediate thrower on trick throws and moreadvanced techniques and illustrates professionals and what they use andwhat they inspire. A great book for any stage of the fascinating art ofknife throwing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Mr. McEvoy teaches traditional knife throwing in this book as well as outlines tomahawk throwing. If you wish a more in-depth look at tomahawk throwing, I suggest you read Mr. McEvoy's other book on the subject.Theauthor describes in detail the traditional technique as well as ways tofigure out the distance at which you can throw the knife and"stick" it.He also has tales of past professionals in the sportand their own particular styles of throwing. He also talks of usingthrowing knives as huntsmens' tools and building a suitable outdoor target. He also shows you how to select (a) suitable knives (knife). If you wishto get the fundamentals of knife throwing down, this is the book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of English Literature
Ok, it's not a masterpiece of English literature. What is there to analyze here? This is like arguing the merits of Benny Hill. For 8 bucks, buy this book.It has a few practical tips about where and how to deficate in the woods (hence the title).Great.The introduction is a tears-in-your-eyes funny anecdote on that topic that is probably worth the price. Then, you have a conversation piece for your bookshelf that will be appreciated by almost everyone. And, the author goes to some length to argue that this title is NOT vulgar (the book includes a useful lexicon for the word that is also worth the price). And, you'll have something to think about the next time you take a hurried necessary behind a tree or abandon a diaper in the Wal-Mart parking lot!Enough analysis already.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally ... a great help for the novice woodsman
Few experiences do more to mar the outdoorsy afternoon or the 8 day backpack trek than stepping over a log and discovering your expensive waffle-stompers are filled with the leavings of another hiker. The problem is as old as mankind. At least, it's as old as mankind after he began noticing what was between his toes.
5-0 out of 5 stars QUITE FUNNY AND VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for cross state travel
While the book does not cover every trail in every area, it is a good resource for traveling around the state to many different areas. There are more detailed books for a certain area, but if you need a book that covers the state, this is a great resource. We traveled all over N Cal. with kids in the summer with some unexpected changes in route. We seemed to always find a nice hike in this book and a good campground in its companion book (Campgrounds of California?).

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONE BOOK you need to hike, backpack, or walk California (at any skill level)
Even in the age of the Internet, these is no other resource as comprehensive and user-friendly as the Foghorn Outdoors California Hiking guide. In fact, this resource transcends the paper-and-ink category by incorporating indexes and cross-references that beat hyper-links any day. The book is prefaced with a California state map broken out into grids. Chapters of the book correspond to grid locations, and each chapter opens with an expanded map of the grid at hand. If, for example, you were looking at the Lancaster/Palmdale area in Chapter/Grid, and you noted that your area of interest was just north of this particular map, you follow the North arrow out of the map, which points the reader to page 596. If you want general areas for perusal, you can turn to the sections that comprise Northern California, Central California, or Southern California areas. If you know your geographic region of interest, it is a snap to locate it on the main state map and find the corresponding chapter. For those following the Pacific Crest Trail, a special index and symbol tracks the hikes which make up the overall trail, and guidance is provided about the general direction (south to north) that the trail is hiked.
2-0 out of 5 stars Own it, Own others. Don' t buy it. Here's why.
I ordered this book, used it, and I had to return it. Imagine you work for big guidebook company (Foghorn Outdoors) and your boss gives you, say 3 months, to write an 800 page book with a stupid gimmick like it has "1000 Hikes of California"
