5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Guide for RVers
Experienced or a beginner, RVers must learn a lot to care for their investment in a motorhome, fifth-wheel or trailer. This book has some advice I haven't seen elsewhere.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted!
Probably a good book for a non mechanic.I was looking for some detail on the equipment on a towable camper.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginner Travel Trailer RVers
I received my copy of The Rv Handbook recently from a used book dealer. It arrived quickly and was in very good condition. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for casual hiker
I bought several yosemite books before my visit, but this is by far the best book I found for the many hikes now that I am here.Perhaps there are better ones, but this one is quite good. One great feature is that for most hikes it gives a 2D elevation change cutaway map for the entire route so that you can judge for youself the level of difficulty of the hike. Many books seem to disagree on this point.(You can see the big spike at half dome for instance as a comparison.)The maps even have GPS coordinates. The maps do have rough topographical shading as well (though color would be better for this).

2-0 out of 5 stars hiking book collector
I spend all winter planning my hikes for the summer. I own and have used most of the titles for Yosemite. Hiking Yosemite National Park has most of the most popular trails but two other books do a better job:100 Hikes in Yosemite National Park and Lonely Planet Hiking in the Sierra Nevada.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise guide
This is an indispensible guidebook for any hiker who loves Yosemite. I use it almost daily during hiking season and it helps in selecting hikes, planning them, reaching the trailhead and gauging whether a hike will be worthwhile. Each hike contains an accurate, though brief, description of the rigors of each trek. Occasionally I quibble with the authors ranking of a given hike, but usually they are on the mark.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Summary of Hiking Issues
This book, based on a number of surveys, provides a broad understanding of what hiking the AT is all about. It explores the motivations of thru-hikers along with answering lots of questions most of us have when planning to hike all or sections of the AT.Easy reading, well organized and lots of facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the aspiring A.T. thru hiker.
If you only read one book before hiking the Appalachian Trail, this is the book. The book is very informative and really helping me prepare for my thru hike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Statistical Information
Roland Mueser has written a terrific book that contains the results of interviewing dozens of hikers. He chose to tackle the subjects of why thru-hike?, footwear, food, equipment, and much more.He also did some scientific testing of his own when it comes to fighting insects.Mueser did a 4-mile run in the woods with DEET and re-did the run without insect repellant so he could tally the bug bites and report his fingings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This guide leads hikers on some of the best trails along the Parkway. As a summer resident of the area I have been hiking the area for several years and I still learned from this guide. As a biologist, I particularly liked the coverage of plants and animals of the area.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" takes you to the top!
As an avid hiker, I struggle to find detailed maps and descriptions of hikes. My time is limited, so I love to find out exactly what to expect on a hike before I begin. "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" has become my primary reference to discovering new hikes that are easy to find. It is very evident that Mr. Johnson has hiked all of the trails because of the great details such as "don't get sucked down the old trail... bear right to reach the junction with two signs."
5-0 out of 5 stars "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" is an excellent guide
As a child, I first hiked trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway with my father more than 40 years ago, and over the decades I've continued to return with a sense of awe at the area's spectacular beauty and rich seasonal variety. But what has been lacking for all of that time is a trail guide that mixes knowledgeable commentary and accurate descriptions with good topographical maps and photos. "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway," which I picked up just last week on the way to the mountains, now fills that void in exemplary fashion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive hiking guide of MNF
This is a very good book for MNF hiking. It also includes information about which trails would be good for ski touring. It includes good trail descriptions, topo maps, area maps, contact information and some photos. There is also a trail rating system for things like scenic beauty, which I found to be helpful.
3-0 out of 5 stars monongahela
Not my cup of tea, way too detailed nothing about horses which is why I got it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best comprehensive guide to the Mon

3-0 out of 5 stars wilderness living and... survival?!
Sure, this book claims to teaches you how to do a a lot of things to survive, except one thing: it doesn't teach you how to string up a log into the trees, so that when someone walks by and unwittingly pulls a trigger, the log comes swinging down and crushes them - like what Arnold Schwarzenegger did to Predator. I haven't yet figured out how a single person can do this, unless you're using a complex lever and pulley system. Anyways, you've really got to fortify some kind of defense if you want to survive, and at least encircle your lair with punji pits.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you [might] need to know...
Gregory Davenport's book is a masterpiece of clarity and brevity, and it covers all the bases.Use it as a reference book, as opposed to a cover-to-cover read. For instance, it starts off with a chapter on making buckskin. It's just the right level of detail if you're tanning a hide, but too much for the casual reader.Another example is the wonderful chapter on making snares.Davenport lists some nineteen types, all illustrated, and all with a practical application.Davenport's education was clearly of the outdoor variety, at the expense of the indoor variety, resulting in some cumbersome syntax, and excessive passive voice, but perhaps his editor is more to blame for that.Overall, it is a genuine masterpiece, and my copy is already dog-eared with use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book
I learned A LOT from his books, they offered a tremendous wealth of information for any wilderness enthusiast. It teaches you how to skin a deer, preserve the meat, build a shelter, start fires, and much more.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A collection of old info with a lot of biases
This is an okay book if you already have several others and want another viewpoint. It should NOT be the only book you buy. There are too many errors and strong biases scattered throughout to make it a one-source reference. Freedom of the Hills (latest edition) is still a better resource if you're just going to have one. The Houston/Cosley book is more up to date and better researched. Twight's book is getting dated but still has good info for those who are pushing harder.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good aspects, but some questionable and unsafe examples
Well, I just purchased this book and I have to say I'm pretty disappointed.I own many of the books already compared in reviews here, and have climbed for years, and I feel that the other books are much better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hopefully this will be fixed if there is a 2nd edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
I found this book to be very out of date, especially in terms of walking paths, pricing and logistics.I went to Dingle, and found that the hostel they highly recommend as having a free shuttle no longer has a free shuttle or friendly/knowledgeable service.I went on the three day Dingle walk that they outline, and the path had changed (and been changed for several years) and we got quite lost several times by following the directions in the books. The hostels that they indicate offer food no longer exist or don't offer food, and they don't mention anything about how easy it is to find someone to shuttle your baggage from walk to walk.Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact encyclopaedia for independent walkers
For independent walkers planning a trip to Ireland, this portable encyclopaedia is good value. It covers a huge range, from a scenic two-hour stroll to the 122-mile Kerry Way (nine days), from easy walks to some tough mountain circuits. As you would expect from Lonely Planet, the authors are strong on environmental issues and thorough on practical information.4-0 out of 5 stars Walking in Ireland
The Lonely Planet guides are always an honest, open an informative and this is no different. The book gives you detailed information on walks giving you directions such as "100m to the left of the pier" and so on. I find with details like that it's pretty hard to get lost! There is alsogeneral information on travelling in Ireland, places to stay, where to eat, what's worth seeing and places to avoid if you want to be in a less visitedarea. The only thing I would like to see is a little more information onday walks. Many people want day walks around Killarny and Dingle and fromthe information in the book I'm not sure how to divide up some of the weeklong walks in to day hikes for people who don't have a week for walking ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Before I read this book, I was afraid to lead and would back off leads if I thought there was a chance I might fall.I had led a couple 5.9s, and easier routes, on bolts.Last week, I led a sustained 5.10d, last month I took my first lead fall on a 5.10c, and yesterday I led 5.10b as if it were 'no big deal.'The Rock Warrior's Way has transformed my view of leading and of climbing in general, and has opened up a whole new world of climbing for me.Thank you, Arno!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars A tedious read
This brings a lot of new-age mysticism to rock climbing. There are definitely some valuable insights but you have to wade through a bunch of tired prose to find them. Overall, it won't do as much for your climbing as spending that time climbing.

5-0 out of 5 stars History becomes three-dimensional
I had the delightful privilege of hearing Mme. Haig read from her book at the French Institute in New York which in turn, plunged me into an exuberant frenzy to learn as much as I could about Napoleon and even more so - Josephine. Mme. Haig's writing comes from a genuine passion about her subjects and is wonderfully researched, with fascinating detail. Should you be travelling to Paris with a teenager, this book could ignite a passion in them as well about history before Britney Spears' first marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful blend of words and art....
Diana Reid Haig's beautiful, well researched book is invaluable on two levels; as a work of art and as a practical walking guide.Walks Through Napoleon and Josephine's Paris will interest Francophiles as well as those who love history and art. This extremely readable history of Napoleon and Josephine chronicles the rise and fall of the doomed couple--a history which is also inexorably linked with the history of France and the French Revolution.5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and useful: a delightful book!
Diana Reid Haig has produced a delightful book that is at once fascinating and useful. She tells short anecdotal stories of Napoleon and Josephine and their times while showing us beautiful photographs of the places they would have known and then showing us how to find them. No one who is interested in Napoleon should ever visit Paris without consulting this book, and even those who will never set foot on the Champs-lyses will enjoy thumbing through its pages and reading Haig's well-written little vignettes of one of history's most famous love stories.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading - excellent value
The books is written in a easy to follow style,no-nonsense,and contains both academical info about avalanches and practical , hot tips. A lot of valuable information is packed up in this book. The book is also copiously illustrated with both photos and graphical drawings to reinforce the knowledge contained in the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain.
The Best Avalanche book I have ever read. I would recommend to pros and novices alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of my avalanche books
I own 6 of the most popular books on avalanche safety; this is by far the best. The core information needed to assess avalanche risk is given in some detail but the explanations are presented in "everyday" terms and are quite easy to understand. None-the-less,Tremper never talks down to his readers and the full level of complexity inherent in the subject matter is maintained. This is simply a very well written book by an author who appearantly is able to write well naturally. He would probably do very well writing about any subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, handy useful resource!
My husband & I just returned from a fantastic trip to Big Bend National Park.We used this excellent, handy, easy-to-use book as our primary resource for deciding what hikes we were capable of taking in the park. The book proved very useful in showing numerous shorter, easier hikes that older people like us with foot and back problems could take as well as longer, harder trails for those who want them and are able.It also gave very interesting, accurate, readable, and useful descriptions of such matters as how to drive to the trailhead and whether parking is available there, some things (mainly scenery & geological features) one is likely to see on the trail, trail length, elevation gain, trail traffic etc., to allow use to decide which trails would most interest us. Further, it contains some useful black and white photos. And it provides some information about neighboring Big Bend Ranch State Park which we also at least drove through. Thanks in large part to this book, we were able to enjoy some the best hiking of our lives despite our current physical limitations.I only wish we had visited the park a decade ago or more when we could have done some of the more strenuous trails described as well. I would recommend this book for virtually anyone planning a visit to Big Bend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody knows Montana like Montana!
As a fellow rock-hound, I can certainly appreciate good directions to off-the-trail sites to collect minerals and fossils. There's no feeling like when you hold a great find in your hands. With Montana's help, the difficulty in finding these locales is greatly reduced. Not only are you provided with a map w/ contour shading, but gps coordinates are given as well. She makes every effort to educate you as well as guide you. I was extremely impressed and pleased by the end result.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hungry Backpacker
This is a must have book for the backpacker. It is full of great recipes and cooking hints.I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with June
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical recipe book for backpackers that I know of.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is The One
I went over the backpacking cookbooks offered on Amazon using the extremely useful viewable pages, and selected the three I thought were best. Of the three I purchased, the Well-Fed-Backpacker is notably more informative. It is in that class of books known as perennial favorites, first published in 1976 and still a very strong book today in its third edition. If you are buying one or three as I did, be sure to include this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An astonishing book with incredible depth of spirit.
I had recently read "The Tracker" by Tom Brown Jr. and thought it a remarkable book. It was the shear enthusiasm and telling of the truth that made it so inspirational. It was a kind of retelling of the innocence of his boyhood. He had been extremely lucky in being taught by Stalking Wolf, the Apache shaman, and grandfather of his best friend Rick. He was 83 at the time and became more than a mentor to the 8 year old Tom. Stalking Wolf epitomised the great teacher everyone seeks but does not find in today's world where too many people have isolated themselves from the natural world.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great sophomore outing for Mr. Brown!
I must say that I wasn't disappointed in this, the follow up to "The Tracker". Though I was inspired by the first book, this, the second really gives me the story I want. It goes from high to low. It shows theman who was at first a bit hesitant and leery of his talents test them inways that inspire. From Mr. Browns deep wood encounter with the spirit of agreat, old tree, to the heartbreak of the tracking of a young victim of asenseless crime, the book captivates!

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile follow-up to "The Tracker"
Though not as quite as inspired as the tracker was, the search continues the story of Tom's life in the outdoors and the further challenges he put himself through ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time: Incredibly out of date
I found this book a total waste of money, starting from totally useless route descriptions with incorrect altitudes of the camps and non-existing penitentes fields featured in them and finishing with an awfully bad and old photos. Basically, one will gain more by doing search for your planned route on Google.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro, not enough about routes
This book is a good intro to Aconcagua (history, geography, etc), it helps plan a trip with good tips on preparation and local arrangements. However, it does not spend enough time describing the trails and the difficulties of each route.Even the normal route, the most popular one, is not described in depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Secor's guide. I read it before climbing Aconcagua and when I was on the mountain I felt as if I had already been there because of the accurate description in the book. The book has also good general advice on equipment, guides, weather, and acclimatization. Definitely a good companion for a wonderful adventure. ... Read more
