5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Take a really dry subject and turn it into a book I couldn't put down!
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for intuitive understanding of the subject
In the opening chapter, this book presents a wonderful simplified story of the evolution of plants, from a single cell to modern complex flowers. Both children and adults can gain a unique, intuitive understanding of this process from this explanation. My compliments to the author. He describes each plant family with interesting anecdotes and high quality line drawings. It's the first plant book whose lack of photographs didn't matter.Great tips for identifying families and individual plants have helped me enormously.Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches the patterns method of plant identification
Any interested in plant identification should consider Botany In A Day: The Patterns Method Of Plant Identification as an important guide. Thomas Elpel (Director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School, Pony, Montana) deftly teaches the patterns method of plant identification, providing a method for learning about groupings of plants based on the idea that related plants have similar patterns for identification, and similar uses. Black and white line drawings accompany descriptions of different plant families and their identification processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Regional but excellent
Definitely a regional book.If you travel in N. Georgia up to New England, this is a must-have guide. The black and white line drawings do aid in identifying plants having structure and shape as the defining characteristic because light and shade of color do not come into play as they might in photos. As in birding, the preference for either photos or drawings is an individual one and, until Newcomb's landed in my library, I used photo guides for wildflowers but preferred drawn guides (like Peterson's) for birds. This is the book that changed my mind on that point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Newcomb's Wildflower Guide
Two types of flower-identification books are available, those that use pure pattern recognition and those that require you to look at the flower. Pattern recognition books usually have pretty pictures of flowers arranged by color and then require you to search many pages to find one that looks like your flower. Newcomb's takes an alternative approach; it requires that you actually look at the flower. The key system is simple to use; for example, how many petals does it have, do the leaves alternate or are they on opposite sides of the stem, is it an herb, bush, or vine, etc. Only after narrowing down the possibilities extensively do you arrive at the pattern recognition stage and have only a few possibilities from which to choose. I have methodically found the names of several different flowers that I could not find even after exhaustive searches of other books. The book is not filled with pretty pictures, it is filled with information and excellent, simple line art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
If all the drawings in this book were in color, then this book would be hard to beat.I love this guide, but sometimes I have to reference a book with color pictures to be certain of an identification. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference on native perennials
This A-Z encyclopedia features over 600 species of native plants for the American gardener. All of the plants included here are perennials which are available to purchase in nurseries and mail-order catalogs. This was the author's major criteria for inclusion and some popular plants were omitted because they are not easily obtainable in the trade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
Well, this is a great beginner's textbook to Plant Physiology, especially when you have very little background in the field.(I major in Physics and took Plant Physiology as an elective.)The text is quite easy to understand, and there are great diagrams to complement the text. However, the text is getting a little bit out of date, as new plant hormones and genes are being discovered at a rapid pace right now.Overall, it was a pretty nice book for someone being introduced to the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent review on plant physiology for students
I teach plant physiology at the University of paris. I have bought the first edition of this boor five years ago and I have bought the new one about one month ago. It was a concise, clear and well up to date documentedreview. I appreciate particularly all the section on bioenergetic andtransport in solutes in relation with morphology and development of theplant. I appreciate also very much the part on the influence of the lighteither for the classical phytochrome or to the appartition of the effect onthe blue light. Scheme are simple, but precise and well descibed. This bookwas a very good intermediate between books of pure biochemistry or puremorphology. All information is integrated and well discussed. In the domainof the plant physiology I think really on my knowledge that this book wasactually, in the domain of the plant physiology, one of the best review, and perhaps the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a useful tool for understanding plant physiology.
I teach plant physiology for biological sciences students in Bogot, Colombia. I think this book is excelent. Also, it is written in a comprehensive English, and explainsclearly the principles of plantphysiology for everyboby including Spanish speakers. It is a very good wayto motivate undergraduate students with the knowledge in plant physiology.I would liKe to congratulate the authors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Thsi book was a perfect bookb for someone who wants to know the straight facts about Botany. For example, a college student might enjoy useing this book because it is packed with so much information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Botany
This book is a must for anyone seriously interested in learning about plants and their relation to the other living kingdoms. It is richly illustrated and covers material clearly and in-depth. I have used the first edition for over eight years as 1) a good read and 2) a reference thatcontinues to inform me as a serious gardener as well as an educated layman. The book emphasizes the evolutionary adaptative aspects of plants to theirenvironment. Starting from the basics of chemistry, it covers plantanatomy, physiology, genetics, and taxonomy. It is a wonderful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondefull book.
I tested this book down in the wilderness of the Baja California peninsula and it worked out just fine. Very good information and photos.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good book
Overall, "Baja California Plant Field Guide" is a good book forthe naturalist. However, its design may not help the begginer since itassumes that the readear has a well developed knowledge in plantmorphology. Introductions to Baja California and its bioregions are verygood but the section for plant identification may cause some trouble to thenaturalist that is trying to identify a new plant species (unless it is acommon one). If the book is re-edited it might be good to incorporate aformat similar to some bird guides and particularly, newer plant guides.

Editorial Review

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle.Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide
Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide.Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used.I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers
Excellent source of information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Identification
There are excellent photos in this book, grouped by color and then by flower complexity. Each picture in the photos section then has a reference to a printed page where detailed information about the plant/flower is presented. It is easy to use and great for an "amateur".My only complaint with the book is that there simply isn't quite enough of it... but, overall it is far and away the best wildflower book I've seen and I have about a dozen different books I use to try to identify wildflowers. ... Editorial Review

Perennials are the most challenging and rewarding of all garden plants, and most gardeners need all the help they can get to grow them well. Perennials emerge from the ground in early spring, grow to full height, bloom, bear fruit, and then disappear with the first frost, only to do the same thing the following year and again the next. Add this to the fact that for the first year or two, perennials don't do much above the ground (they are growing their root structure), but after that they burst forth with amazingly vigorous growth, and you get an idea of the pleasures and tribulations of perennial gardening. The rewards, however, are rich: a wide array of flower forms and colors, structure and leaf, an ever-changing mid-level tapestry in the garden, plus a celebration of seasonal change. Few gardeners can resist perennials, but how to grow them better and more effortlessly?Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families by Wendy B. Zomlefer [Paperback]
This should be a five start rating but something happened when I wrote the review so I can't change the star rating.Suffice it to say that this is a very comprehensive book with wonderful black and white illustrations.A very useful guide for students of botanical art or for anyone interested in plants.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing Families
Many floras and the USDA Plant Database use Cronquist's classification system.Several families in that system are missing in Thorne's system as used in this book.I would suggest supplementing this book with James Payne Smith's "Vascular Plant Families."
