5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Updating of Smith
It has been over 50 years since the last edition (1950) of Smith's "Freshwater Algae of the United States" and much has changed in our knowledge of the classification of the "Algae".These are now known to contain several quite different organisms from Euglena to Chara and from diatoms to desmids and Spirogyra. The flora is huge and often poorly known. Thus it was with some enthusiasm that I welcomed the publication of this massive tome.A much-needed updating of Smith's classic book and more, it contains numerous black and white photos and drawings, plus extensive bibliographies for each chapter. I also much appreciate the keys, having been involved in writing several for spider genera. The only down side is the rather high price, which is quite a bit more than its companion volume on freshwater invertebrates.4-0 out of 5 stars Review

You don't have to be a connoisseur of lilies to appreciate these beautiful specimens. If you are a horticulturalist or just an art lover, this new book will fascinate you. Editorial Review

When your new gardening bible comes with chapters entitled "Birth," "Life," and "Death," you know you're in trouble. But be brave, turn to those chapters, and in some very practical little essays on planting, you'll uncover the very down-to-earth principle from which Piet Oudolf's radical reinvention of gardening is based: plants die. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and Implementation
Piet Oudolf is one of today's garden design geniuses. He gives us a book that is both inspiration and implementation. He inspires readers to design gardens that are carefully crafted but appear utterly natural. Then he gives us new, creative tools to make these garden designs. Oudolf focuses on plant structures and gives us easy categories for the forms of herbaceous garden plants. He emphasizes mood, light, movement, and rhythm in garden design. Always thinking outside the box, he even champions spent perennials at season's end. Gorgeous color photos illustrate all points. A must-have for both dreamers and gardeners with dirty hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide To Wildflowers By A True Expert
If you happen to be visiting The Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA, you will probably notice a man puttering in the gardens or working in the nursery. More than likely he will instinctively know that you have a question about the wildflowers you are examining and he will be more than happy to share his knowledge. This amiable person is William Cullina of the New England Wildflower Society. For those who are unable to visit the garden, or have a question about wildflowers, Cullina's book GROWING AND PROPAGATING WILDFLOWERS is the next best thing. This coffee table style book is filled with lavish photographs and wonderful commentary about many wildflowers found in North America. The book not only assists the reader in identifying various wildflowers, but helps the reader who wishes to incorporate wildflowers in a home garden. Cullina mentions in the introduction that horticulture has been a life long passion. This is evident in his writing style. The information in the book is informative and while it is presented in a formal manner, it is non-threatening for the novice gardener. This work is not helpful just for gardeners. Photographers will appreciate the wonderful shots of the flowers, many of which were photographed by Cullina himself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing if you want to cultivate these plants
I was under the impression that this book would provide the information I needed to cultivate these plants on some scale.I was very disappointed. There is no way that you could reliably produce these plants with the information provided in this book. There are much better books out there for that purpose. If you are a novice, homegardener wanting to learn about wildflowers and grow a few in your backyard, this book would be okay for you.But if you are knowledgeable on the topic already, I think you will be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great photographs for inspiration
For a macro photography beginner the photographs were a great inspiration. One dissapointment with the book is that it does not mention how the photos were taken. Kufeld has used lighting quite creatively and it would have been great if he had provided some more information for others to learn his techniques.
1-0 out of 5 stars Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy
As a professional photographer, I found this book extremely disappointing. I purchased it because of the 'good' rating reviews I read under its title and the one good photograph which is on the cover. His lighting is terrible and his 'point of focus' using a macro lens, along with the compositions, make absolutely no sense. The only thing I would use this book for is to lecture on 'how not to do macro photography'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual, exquisite journey
Adam Kufeld's book on flowers is a pure delight. It is a fantasy book in the truest sense -- it allows your imagination to soar as these beautiful photographs take you from the depths of the sea to the farthest reaches of outer space, all in the limitless creation of your mind's eye.Kufeld's photographic vision turns flowers into abstract paintings, into fantastic creatures, into images so sensual that they should be viewed in the privacy of one's boudoir! Kufeld leads us into the delicate private sanctum of the heart of the flower, revealing the intricate gloriously rich world that is so easily overlooked in our hurried lives. What a delicious treat! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reference
This is the best reference book I have on Boletes. It has so much information on just Boletes so it is fairly comprehensive, and the book is so easy to use. The keys make it easy to identify just about any Bolete. The descriptions are in alphabetical order as are the pictures so it is easy to flip through to find what you want. The pictures are incredible! The price was well worth it for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Most expensive paper weight i own
Great book if you are a scientist, but for the average mushroom hunter it is way too complicated to use. Information is scattered thoughout the book so you are forever flipping pages Ex.Once you get to a name, you have to go to the index w/that name to find out where the picture it's at. Don't it make sense to have that info next to the mushroom name and description.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, yet accessible.
This book is a little pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The keys are fabulous, the photography excellent, and by limiting itself to boletes, this book covers most of what you will find, at least in North America. I have been collecting, identifying, and eating wild mushrooms for years, and this is one of the best reference books of the many I've used. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A century ago, malaria was killing Washingtonians, Londoners, Parisians. Today HIV, along with various cancers, has taken its place among worldwide epidemics. Quinine, extracted from the cinchona tree of the Amazonian rainforest, quelled malaria; alkaloids taken from trees in the West African rainforest may well yield a cure for AIDS. Yet those woods, Mark Plotkin tells us, are fast disappearing, along with the native peoples who know the powers of the plants that dwell there. His account of wandering through the Amazonian jungles focuses on local knowledge about plants, whose uses range from the mundane to the magical. The rainforests of the world, Plotkin notes, are our greatest natural resource, an intercultural pharmacy that can cure woes both known and yet unvisited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
Occassionally its a paragraph too long, but otherwise a very, very beneficial book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Sing Your Praises
This book was nothing less than a page turner.Mark Plotkin weaves his tale of adventure and peril of Suriname with a style unsuspected of a scientist.Dr. Plotkin goes to the Amazon in search of plants with medicinal value. The book is not so much dedicated to his finds but his interaction with people and animals of the rainforest.Furthermore, the book is steeped with the cultural plight and history of the natives.Interspersed throughout one can find history lessons of certain plants (for instance, coffee originated in Ethiopia before politics and redistribution landed the plant in Brazil).I must say I found Dr. Plotkin's tale to be inspirational and was sad to see the book come to an end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shamans know best
This is a great book. I have read it twice and also given it as a gift. Dr. Plotkin enters the jungle to know the shamans. He learns so much from them. Dr. Plotkin exposed himself to the jungle and its dangers in order to help us find cures to so many illnesses. He now belongs to the Amazon Conservation Team. I really recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS BY TOMPKINS & BIRD
This book had a lasting influence on my life since the first time that I have read it in March 1981. I have always loved plants and had respect for them - especially trees. However, after reading The Secret Life of Plants I knew why. As the book so amply illustrates plants are living, sentient beings with a conscious life of their own. Plants have been around since the dawn of time and know a few things about survival, but more importantly we can learn a lot from plants. Most people know that plants provide us with oxygen, food, medicines, clothing, shade, and beauty, but very few people realised anything about the other side of plant life, the secret life of plants - their consciousness, feelings, pain, longings, and joys. Tompkins and Bird unlocked this closed side of plant life for many of us for the first time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book!
As a plant ecologist I thought I should give this book a fair shake. This is the most ridiculous book I have ever read! Don't bother reading it. If you want a real book about how plants really work read David Suzuki's Tree: A life story.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book!Since i began reading it, i have not been able to put it down, nor have i been able to "shut-up" about the endless intriguing stories within its' pages!
