5-0 out of 5 stars a sequel please
All things black and slimy.I loved your book Dr. Money.Lets add the nasty Chaetomium next time also neurogenic fungus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Fungi
If Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) were reincarnated as a mycologist, he would have written this book. Dr. Money's liberal dose of irreverent humor makes his very detailed, erudite book on toxic mold easy and enjoyable to read.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
Nicholas Money is an amazing writer who manages to entertain and instruct at all times. I found myself learning and laughing from cover to cover. "Carpet Monsters and Killer Spores" is a book for everyone. Not only does it provide a wonderful introduction to the study of fungi; it explores the way our lives and destinies are inextricably linked to those of the fungi. Homeowners, attorneys, and people in the insurance industry will find much to enjoy (and fear!) in this book, as will biology enthusiasts, naturalists, and readers of all persuasions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just beautiful photos
I just finished reading this book and it was a delight!More than just a reference book, it is chock full of excellent information on origins, habitat, usage, reliability and much more. The suggestions and advice from Mr. Smith, who has been a plant enthusiast for so long, really hit the mark. The style is so friendly without a bit of condescension.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, portable, easy to use.
Very good reference guide to have while assessing forest. Is portable enought to take along, without being unreasonably heavy and bulky.Still need definitive text to refer back to, since it's not all-inclusive, but then again, it isn't supposed to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forestry Handbook: Must-have resource for foresters
The Forestry Handbook contains a wealth of information for foresters and other natural resource managers. It's not a book that you read from start to finish (even discounting the 1,335 page length).Rather, it is a superb reference book.I use the Handbook frequently, and have a copy both at work and at home.5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book

5-0 out of 5 stars best shrub identification book
This book is the best manual for the identification of shrubs and shrubby plants. The photographs are in black & white. There are a set of master pages and then sets of pages with flowers, leaves and fruits. All are very descriptive and enable one to identify with only parts of the plant.
5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I think this book is great.I've been able to id almost every tree/shrub we've got in our woods (I also purchased some of the other books by this author so I can id vines and things too).True the pictures are in black and white but it really isn't a big deal. You're looking at leaf shape and vein designs and things like that - it would be green and white if it were in color.I think its a terrific reference and I'd buy it all over again

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide!
I bought both Symonds' Shrub guide and Tree guide. They are both terrific! The Shrub guide has not only shrubs but also vines and ground covers. It has plants that I've been wanting to be able to id for ages butbecause the only book I had found until now were wild flower guides, I wasalways at a loss. This book is fantastic. It has master plant pages a theback so you can look at all the parts of the plants together (I use thiswhen i have an idea of what it might be already and just need to narrow itdown) or you can go to the parts sections in the front of the book and goto "leaves" for example and search that way.Its the bestapproach I've seen and the pictures, although black and white - areterrific. They show great detail and actuall because they're b/w you'renot confused by variations in color.Definitely one one my best books -the one I go to first. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Limited and Incomplete
I am a professional ecologist and spend at least 100 days a year in the field characterizing vegetation communities and plant species. It is difficult to tell which part of the country this book would be best suited for, as it would be considered incomplete in the areas I have used it in (Northern and Southern Rockies, Black Hills, Intermountain West and Northern Great Plains).I found it's treatment of rushes especially wanting. This book has made it to the field with me only a few times and was seldom used then. The most redeeming quality of this book is it's size, which can easily fit into a back pocket, but when it's taken out you will probably not be able to key the more difficult and uncommon graminiods found in the U.S.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book.Great sketches
Decent book, the sketches are very helpful for attempting to key out species.

3-0 out of 5 stars alright
great drawings depicting mst abundant species although they just go to descriptions for the more rare species.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest book for everyone
I've been teaching in the outdoors using field guides with novices for 18 years, so I offer this advice to assist beginners in choosing a wildflower guide.I have used both this book and the Newcomb book and greatly prefer this one, although Newcomb's is very good.Newcomb's uses a series of keys, which I guess some people find more "sophisticated."Although the key in Newcombs isn't hard to use, I find that the Peterson guide is faster and easier to use in the field.I have also observed that beginners are less likely to make mistakes using the Peterson wildflower guide. The big plus of the Peterson book is the identification system. The flowers are first arranged by color and the book is color coded.Although wild plants may not always be showing their flower colors, 9 times out of ten when the amateur is identifying a flowering plant, it will be in bloom. You can use the Peterson guide to learn the key characterisitics of a blooming plant so that later on when it is not blooming you will still be able to find it in the book and recoginze it.5-0 out of 5 stars Best For Laymen
I have used this book for 20 years to identify wildflowers successfully; the drawings and paintings capture the essence of the flower in a way no photo does; the book includes many less commonly found plants so you are more likely to find what you're looking for; and it is organized by flower color which is most likely to be what drew your attention in the first place. Excellent reference, easily used.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Guide
I own several wildflower identification books, and this one is among my favorites.I often use it in conjunction with other books, but it also does well on its own.I like the fact that the subjects are listed bycolor - this makes it much easier for me to differentiate species when outin the woods.I have given this book as a gift to flower-loving friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
Dream Plants is a great book. The authers are upfront, the plants they critique are ones they have grown. While I might not agree with some of they're descriptions, I as a gardener realize that I have my own little piece of earth and they have theirs.I found it wonderful. The pictures, the layout, the descriptions, and yes, the I don't agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, a guide worthy of owning and studying...
This volume, taken together with Oudolf's "Designing With Plants" -- an invaluable companion -- gives the gardener an inspiring and comprehensive approach to stylish landscape design and plant selection. Taken by itself, "Dream Plants" is a not necessarily helpful guide. It's hard to make sense of it as different from any other plant selection book, as it has no context. But in consort with "Designing With Plants," the design context comes clear: one has both the key and the lock in one place -- the design guide, and the plant selection menu. With both in hand -- and the photographs are lush and suggestive, and the plans bold and clearly illuminated -- there remains plenty of obscurity throughout. But there are not many mistakes here of continuity, and so one has confidence that it is as full and reliable a depiction of natural, early 21st century garden and landscape design principles and practice one can get between two covers. 2-0 out of 5 stars You need to know plants to benefit from this book
Dutchmen Gerritsen and Oudolf label Boltonia a "troublesome, demanding plant." The same with our common wildflower Monkshood. They say that Knipofia won't survive winter. Lobelia hybrids are "only for people with green fingers." "Tierella wherryi is quite reliable when you look after it properly..." All of these plants are favorites in US gardens.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brief comment
As my fellow Top 50 reviewer, Dennis Littrell, has already said it better than I, I just wanted to add a brief comment, mainly because a few years ago I once spent a wonderful three weeks travelling around New Zealand observing its plant and animal life, and many of the examples of plants in the photos are from this country, since one of the authors is from there, and I've seen much of New Zealand's fascinating and diverse fauna and flora myself.
5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
Most of the color photographs are by co-author Rob Lucas. They are just sumptuous--stunning even--and carefully chosen, and illustrative of the great diversity of plant life on earth. There is a slight bias in favor of the unique biota of New Zealand which is understandable since Lucas is from New Zealand. He and his colleague, UC Berkeley botany PhD John Dawson, have written several books on the flora of New Zealand, one of which won the Natural Heritage Prize. This book too ought to win some sort of prize since it is so gorgeously illustrated, so engagingly written, and so carefully edited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!
I love this book- the photographs are absolutely astonishing and make it worth the buy alone. It also covers a wide range of trees, fifty I think to be exact. One disappointment was that the book does have some mistakes in the history, because it cites the "Goddess cults", ect. Most modern historians have shown that there is not sufficient evidence to back up the existance of these cultures, and the book does mention them quite a few times, showing that this history was not checked. However, much of the mythological info in it is valid, and this book shouldn't be missed by anyone wanting to learn more about trees and their significance!

I would give this book an A-almost there and ahead of the rest.
5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Pacific Northwest regional flora
For over 30 years the regional flora for the Pacific Northwest was Hitchcock et al., Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest. For people on the wet side of the mountains, Kozloff provides a new standard guide. He gives us a wealth of fine photographs (over 700 in color) and illustrations, with clear descriptions and keys, allowing identification of nearly every species found in western Washington and Oregon (experts have noticed that a few species are missed, though).Non-native species are identified, with reference to their country of origin. As the most recent comprehensive text, it also provides a reasonably current taxonomic picture of the region as well, which is very useful as hundreds of new names have appeared since the days of Hitchcock. In sum, if you want the definitive flora for the region, this is it.If you want something more portable, though, you should look at a field guide - Pojar and MacKinnon's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great coffe table book
I love the great pictures in this book. The information is very helpful in describing each type of bud. It tells you what to expect from each one. I find this very helpful when researching buds. As a graphic designer I think this layout is top notch. Crisp, clear and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is 1up for Ed!
We liked the book a lot. It almost already seems like a classic. So much more information is being produced in Cultivation books, websites, DVD's etc.
