5-0 out of 5 stars Super book
Great reference book!Gives you all the information you need to propagate--nurserymen to laymen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book by a pro for the professional propagator
I propagated woody plants as a sideline business for a number of years and considered this book THE source. For many species, specific concentrations for rooting hormones are specified. This is invaluable information since for many plants there is an optimal concentration and using a higher or lower concentration of reduces rooting success rates as well as root development.

5-0 out of 5 stars MichaelDirris the Absolute Expert in Plant Propagation
Dirr has done all the research and you reap all the rewards. Hisconclusions are backed up by many scientific studies by various individualsand groups. The first part gives a summary of the diferentpropagation methods and the second part has very detailed data on specificspecies.I save hundreds of dollars each year by propagating by ownsouthern magnolias, red tip photinas, and navel oranges. This is, byfar, the best book on propagation out there!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to understand the physiologhy of vegetables
This book is one of the best vegetable physiology books I have ever read. First couple of chapters provide you with complete understanding of basic vegetable physiology, where as later chapters deal with major vegetable crops individually. It is a very good and valuable source of informationfor students majoring in horticulture as well as researchers. As anhorticulturist, I am planning to use this book as a textbook for my"the principles of growing vegetables" course which I will beteaching soon. ... Read more

Editorial Review

On August 5, 1949, lightning came crashing down in the vast spruce forest above Seeley Lake, Montana, and touched off a roaring blaze. As every Westerner knows, lightning means fire, but the fire that raged through Mann Gulch that day was huge--the sort that occurs only every few decades. A battery of paratrooper-firefighters, many of them fresh veterans of World War II, had been anticipating it, and even looking forward to the chance to fight a great fire. Before the day ended thirteen of those smokejumpers lay dead, their charred remains evidence that something had gone terribly wrong. Norman Maclean gives a thorough account of the incident in language not meant for the squeamish: "Burning to death on a mountainside is dying at least three times ... first, considerably ahead of the fire, you reach the verge of death in your boots and your legs; next, as you fail, you sink back in the region of strange gases and red and blue darts where there is no oxygen and here you die in your lungs; then you sink in prayer into the main fire that consumes." After August 1949, he notes, the Forest Service came to recognize that not all fires need to be fought and that fire benefits most forest ecosystems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of wildland safety
Living in Montana and being a a Wildland firefighter as well. This book shows the true speed, power and ultimately the violence that a full blown fire can build to. The men that died in Mann Gulch created in death the first vestiges of the high level of training and safety we now all use when in similar situations. Along with fire on the mountain, required reading if you want to see as fire as we do!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Blowhard
The book is way to long it could be 200 pages. Maclean babbles on for paragraphs about something that could be said in a paragraph or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute
Norman Maclean was born to write this book. As an outdoorsman, a wildland firefighter of the same generation as the books subjects and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Norman Maclean's voice becomes the ideal homage to the hero's of Mann Gulch. While fans of Maclean's fiction might miss some of the poetry of his previous works, they will visit a new side of the author in this work as he pieces together the puzzle of Mann Gulch and makes peace with his own personal ghosts. Here the author, in his words, seeks to let the "tragedy become a story". The tragedy is told in detail, both honestly and reverently. Maclean labors to remain dispassionate and honest, to, "not become to sentimental". The tragedy he relates is horrible, the story of the tragedy is beautiful. It is a fitting tribute to the crosses of Mann Gulch and the memories of those who died there. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as the medicinal
The pictures aren't good enough to make identification easy.Good information if you have another book to identify the plants with.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect choice
As usual the Petersen Guide did not disappoint me. It's exactly what I wanted for plant identification

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
I have always had high regard for anything pertaining to Roger Tory Peterson, in regards to nature he is the best naturalist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soon
Certainly one of the better books I have read on this subject.Very descriptive and scientific. One downfall to the book and to the whole idea of tissue culture is the massive costs of lab equipment and growing media.Very well written book though, and a good starter book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay but fell short of my expectations
The book was okay but fell short of my expectations. The author attempted to proceed by taking the reader from no background on microbiology, botany, or tissue culture to explaining to what cloning is all about. It fell short in several areas. The author needed to expand the discussion on plant hormones and the issue of thermal stability during sterilization procedures. The author didn't discuss at all modern methods of cold-filter sterilization methods. The author discusses the topic about making stock solutions but didn't discuss issues of shelf life of hydrated hormones.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best curently available
This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too.I thought that it could have beenorganized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and mediabefore they go through the cloning process.Parts of it will be boringunless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there areseveral step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
I use this book as a starting point on specific topics in plant physiology & ecophysiology from the plant cell to plant global communities. Indeed, it is not an intro course in plant physiology and very broad but I would recommend this book for graduate students, it is helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars A complex book - not for the beginner
This book covers a lot of ground, beginning with photosynthesis, plant-water relations, and plant energy balances before discussing ecological aspects of plant physiology. While it follows a logical progression from the cell to the ecosystem scale, the book is very difficult to read. The authors try to cover too much material in the book, omitting basic material in order to broaden the focus of the book. Therefore, it is definitely not for those who are looking for a basic book in either plant physiology or plant ecology. As a textbook, it is difficult for undergraduate students to understand, and seems to be geared towards graduate students and those already familiar with the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for funghi lovers!
I recommend this book for fungi lovers old and new. Great tips and fabulous recipes, along with cute family stories. I use this book often for dinner parties and family dinners. The colorful cover makes a great coffee table addition, but I use the book so frequently I can't keep it out of my kitchen. I have given many as gifts to my culinary friends. It's a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars DELECTABLE
I watched my husband glace at the book and he just started reading it and about 15 minutes later I realized he was still reading it.He doesn't even cook!Anyway, inspired by his attention to this tome, I grabbed my tea yesterday and hung out on the pet's couch for a good read!I was not disappointed! I now feel I wouldn't be shy about cooking with exotic mushrooms.I can't wait to try the mushroom chile (which I read about in Metropolitan Home mag.)for the Superbowl Party tomorrow.Wow! Thanks Amy Farges!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondefull book.
I tested this book down in the wilderness of the Baja California peninsula and it worked out just fine. Very good information and photos.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good book
Overall, "Baja California Plant Field Guide" is a good book forthe naturalist. However, its design may not help the begginer since itassumes that the readear has a well developed knowledge in plantmorphology. Introductions to Baja California and its bioregions are verygood but the section for plant identification may cause some trouble to thenaturalist that is trying to identify a new plant species (unless it is acommon one). If the book is re-edited it might be good to incorporate aformat similar to some bird guides and particularly, newer plant guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must for anyone serious about Baja flora.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2nd best mushroom book
The pictures in this guide are not quite as nice as in the audubon version but is still easy to use and a nice handy size for carrying in a pocket

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a standard field guide to fungi
This field guide is nearly twenty years old, but there are so few field guides to fungi that it still remains a standard reference. Like all Peterson field guides, it is handy and compact and can easily be taken into the field and pored over with the mushrooms in their wild habitat. The text is detailed and accurate and a "similar species" section is very useful. However, this guide uses painted plates whereas amateurs generally find it easier to identify fungi by photographs. I personally find photographs more accurate, but enjoy paintings in their own right. In this case the paintings are pleasing and quite faithful.
4-0 out of 5 stars mushroom field guide

3-0 out of 5 stars Instant Guide to Trees
Real good drawings of tree leaves, needles and buds. Not any information on tree height (feet), bark or soil conpatibality. Good for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Guide toTrees
When I got my book in the mail my face instantly went pale.It was not what I had hoped for, though my third grader will love it .The drawings/graphics are well done, but rarely any size data (how big is the leaf you're looking at for example) and not a single scientific name in sight.I think adults will tire of the book easily for there's not enough detailed infromation. If you have ever tried to distinguish a black oak from a red oak this book is not for you. At last, for $3.99 it's a good deal for your kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Handy Tree Identification Guide
This book was better than two other far more expensive books on tree identification that I recently purchased from Amazon.com.Excellent color graphics and a section to distinguish between/among other trees with similar leaves. One shortcoming is that the entire tree(s)were only identified with shadow outlines instead of using the same color graphics that distinguished the identification of leaves/needles/berries, etc.Another would be the absence of an outline map of the US showing where the trees are found.Instead, there's a written description of the regions. ... No mere Peterson field guide, this scholarly work is a concise encyclopedia of all the trees native to the northeastern United States, with descriptions that can truly be used to tell them apart (a unique feat). Belongs in the backpack of any hiker who wants to learn trees.Fits in a half-gallon Ziploc.Remember you need a magnifying glass and a sharp knife to use the book properly.

As a wetland delineator in PA, this book proves invaluable for field identification of trees, shrubs, and vines.Especially useful is are the keys for identification of these plants in winter when leaves and fruiting bodies are non-existant.I have several other tree books for reference, but they rarely are worth carting along in the field now that I have this book.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for people interested in edible wild plants
My only regret about this book is that it isn't longer!5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Edible Plants
This books shows, in an easy to understand format-in my opinion-a person how to identify wild edible plants that they can harvest (some even in their own backyard). It shows photos of the plants, tells you if there is a poisonous look alike plant, how to identify them, common locations of the plants, and how to prepare them for a meal. If someone wants to learn more about eating plants that grow in the wild, this book is the one I think should be in their library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only Fair for Identification
Identification of edible species is what I want, with emphasis on the first word. From my experience in identifying tree species and other plant ID handbooks,I'd call this one mediocre. The photos are often close-ups with no indication of scale, so size is unknown.Details are not included.Root structure and overall plant structure are seldom shown.ID often depends on flowers, present only for a few weeks of the year.Variation among species is so widespread that I'd recommend at least two good books, with better illustrations than those found here.Drawings, though not "natural", often provide better clues to identity by showing roots, structure, etc. ... I have used this book so much during my MSc Project on Algal Communities, that it became my personal bible for all aspects of benthic algal ecology. It's a very comprehensive book, that is both interesting and relevant rightfrom the start till the very end. All topics are well designed andillustrated and all in all it is very nice to read - not only forEcologists like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ecologist's Bible for Periphyton
I used that book so much during the writing up of my MSc thesis that it became my personal bible for all periphyton related issues. I've never seen so much excelent and relevant information on this topic in just one book. The figures are well placed, and all in all it's very nice to read (notonly for Algal Ecologists like me). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE Standard, Of Course
The best of its genre, and the standard in visual identification guides for field work and species' recognition. Almost every item is illustrated with color photographs, though I wish there were more images of each item, for year-round accurate ID. If I could afford to, I'd own the entire publication list of "A Field Guide To...". :-)
5-0 out of 5 stars A reference to bring into the field
This compact book is prefect for carrying in your pocket when out in the fields and woods. It has some fascinating herbal lore along with the text descriptions and photos for plant identification. If you want a book to bring with you will in the field this one is a great choice. As the title states a field guide it is!

Editorial Review

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle.Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide
Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide.Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used.I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers
Excellent source of information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Identification
There are excellent photos in this book, grouped by color and then by flower complexity. Each picture in the photos section then has a reference to a printed page where detailed information about the plant/flower is presented. It is easy to use and great for an "amateur".My only complaint with the book is that there simply isn't quite enough of it... but, overall it is far and away the best wildflower book I've seen and I have about a dozen different books I use to try to identify wildflowers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book called "The Color Encyclopedia of Daylilies"
This was an awesome book I love it.Received it very fast in perfect condition from Amazon.
4-0 out of 5 stars New edition needed.
This is a beautiful book but there are so many new varieties that have been developed since publication it has become somewhat dated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty, Pretty Pictures
You will not find another book with such a variety of beautiful photos of daylilies. For daylily growers that want the most comprhensive photo gallery available to date.I would have enjoyed more details about the parentage of these beautiful daylilies.Munsen and Hill are tops for information but Petit's Encyclopedia is by far the pick for beautiful photos.I am sure the five stars this book received from reviewers was based on the hundreds of excellent color and variety of daylily types. If you like lots of top notch photos this is the best!!! ...
