4-0 out of 5 stars ignore that bitter student
I too used this book for my introductory botany class and actually worked for Tom Rost several years later (as my both interest and understanding of the subject grew, neither were affected in anyway but a posistive one from the use of this text).I used an older version which included a rudimentary section on fungi (I'm not sure if this edition does) as the book was written to mirror the original content of course taught a UCD but other than that it has just what you'd want to know to get you feet wet in botany.I have this book in paper back - the binding is cracking and I have officallly had pages fall out but I still pull this book out occasionally for use.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great visual help to botany
I bought this book as a additional resource to a basic plant science course that I was taking. It has great pictures, and explanations on the basic proceses in plants. This is not a book that a begining self taught person could learn from easily. This is a textbook, not a home gardener's type book. The only drawback is the binding. All the books that I have seen have been falling apart.I would recommend the spiral bound edition or just live with the binding

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is junk
I'm a UC Davis student who took the plant biology course that uses this book. The professor doesn't even follow the book because it's so bad. It's unorganized, confusing, and useless for my class. Even some of the illustrations in the book are wrong. Don't buy this book if you just plan to learn plant biology. If you have to buy this book because course requirement, good luck ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I live in Tennessee. I own about 40 mushroom books and this one is my favorite. It is great to have a book for identification that covers mushrooms found in the south so well. The pictures are excellent. Roody lists possible look-alikes in many of the excellent, detailed descriptions. He also comments on the edibility of each species. Should be an excellent book for beginners and seasoned mushroom hunters alike. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Mushroom Field Guides Ever!
I live in New York State and have been collecting mushrooms for years - edible and otherwise.I already own just about every other field guide to identifying mushrooms and other fungi, so when I saw this book for sale, I thought "do I really need another?"Well, it turns out I did. This book is fabulous! The pictures are first rate, and sometimes provide identifying detail that pictures in other books do not. While the "regulars" are there (mushrooms you find illustrated in almost every field guide) it also contains pictures of mushrooms that are common but not regularly pictured in other field guides. Consequently, it allowed me to solve a lot of long-standing "mushroom mysteries" in my backyard. The book contains longer than average "comments" on each species, often providing fascinating information.I highly recommend ths book!

After a decade of waiting for this book, I am certainly not disappointed. As an avid mushroom hunter, I have to say that this is the best field guide I have found. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
Pakenham's Meetings with Remarkable Trees and his Remarkable Trees of the World are portraits, not just pictures, each book documenting the impressive presence of sixty venerable trees from around the world. Pakenham groups them by their histories: Natives, Travelers, Shrines, Fantasies and Survivors. Each is a testimony to the majesty of Nature's creativity, diversity and adaptability.
5-0 out of 5 stars a Wonderful Tree Lovers Book
This is an amazing book from the stunning photographs to the detailed stories about each remarkable tree. It is also scattered with beautifull 18thC etching of illustrated trees that refer to the tree being discussed.I found this book quite beautiful. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about trees. Or to anyone who is looking for great photograhic reference as I was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful trees, beautiful writing, beautiful book.
If you need a gift for a nature lover or photographer that you really like, this is the book for them. And get yourself a copy while you're at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a jewel
In recent years, quite a number of autumnal books have appeared on the market.Featuring beautiful photographs reproduced in brilliant colors, the coffee table tomes and regular-sized volumes now appear on store bookshelves just before the *real* leaves begin to change throughout the landscape.Publishers know that "leaf-peepers" want to take samples of those leaves home with them after seeing them in person.Or perhaps displaced Northerners, missing the four seasons, want visual reminders of home.

4-0 out of 5 stars great guide in a sparse field of study
The "Winter Tree Finder" by May Theilgaard Watts and Tom Watts is a compact little gem.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and extremely portable
This is a fine little guide. It's close to the perfect field guide on this under-treated subject--physically small, light and reasonably complete. If your nature rambles don't stop when it gets cold, you should consider this little volume.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a reprint of 1997 edition
If you don't already have the original 1997 edition, then this is definitely a 5 star title. However, if you DO have the original, don't bother to buy this one. Despite the various developments mentioned in the preface to this 2005 edition -- advances in no-till planting techniques, restoration strategies for woodland wildflowers, methods for integrating native biodiversity into agriculture, and exploding Internet resources -- none are dealt with here. There is no updated information about weed problems and herbicides, despite the ongoing advance of invasives and development of new products. Lots has happened in the field in the decade since the prior edition was written, but you learn none of it here. This is just a reprint of the original -- and this is quite disappointing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook : For Prairies, Savannas,
Let me just say that it is nice that someone wrote more than just what plants to use. It is fairly easy to find prairie journals and books that describe everything except how to implement your prairie project. Packard had the good sense to know that seeding rates and implementation techniques are necessary information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing......
This is a top rate restoration hand book.Amazing amount of information from people who are out doing the work.It is a collection of essays/chapters written by the front-runners in the field.Everything you wanted to know from site selction to seed collection to fire management.Since it is written by actual prairie restorationists, not theorists it is practical and easy to understand.I will recomend it to everyone who is interested in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Zealand HIAI Monthly email Newsletter
This is a monumental effort, 220 page plus book well laid out and researched with heaps of references and an easy to follow index of pests and diseases plus biological solutions as the title indicates. Members may recall that John McPartland in fact all the authors were very helpful to NZHIAI some time back regarding MAF's (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) request for information regarding industrial hemp pests and diseases. By NZ standards this book is quite pricey (NZD 150-00 plus landed) That said I would suggest if you are re serious regarding growing industrial hemp this book will become as it is rapidly for me "Your bible." There is so much information my head is spinning. It is attractively bound and could well become a collectors item. No problems with NZ customs. In a word it is BRILLIANT.A credit to the authors. It can be obtained from the website below. Only took a week to get here.

Hemp diseases and pests An amazing new tome on cannabis cultivation. from CC On-line, by Pete Brady5-0 out of 5 stars overwhelmingly thorough
Having only been able to get an overview of this imposing tome, I came away thorougly impressed.for by far the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book should become indispensable. in a field dominated by the likes of ed rosenthal and jorge cervantes, it's nice to see a work that's more academic than either e.r. or j.c. are inclined to churn out (not that they don't provide a great service to the public as well!) if you've got the time, and are serious about cultivation, this work will resolve a lot of nagging questions and issues you might have in a professional, well-organized fashion. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not great
Great fron cover an internal cover, but that is where all the fun stops with this book, unfortunately. The rest of the book consists of strangely chosen and bad quality photographs with lots of huge text. I do not recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a great photograhic book on forests - it is very deceiving!

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing.
I bought this book with the expectation there would be many more detailed photographs in it.Though the photos that were there were stunning to be sure, there were too few of them!More photos, maps to said forests, etc. would have caused me to give this a full five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Green splendour revealed
Approximately one third of the earth's land area is covered by forest habitats. Some are well-known, but there are magnificent forest areas that have not gained major attention. Mythic Woods explores the individual character of both familiar and unknown forests on all continents, revealing new worlds of majestic beauty. The forests include:

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on this subject!
Although this book seems more designed to educate the novice at growing Christmas trees, I believe everyone, even people currently in this business, can learn something valuable from it.It is well written and enjoyable to read, plus informative in that it describes all sorts of trees used, planting methods, protection and care of seedlings and transplants, recommendations for planting locations, and a whole host of other information.I attribute this book to getting me interested in this field as a hobby.Recommend it very highly!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read
This was a good book for the novice with no experience in the tree industry. It was a quick read and enjoyable. But not for someone in who works in the field already.

5-0 out of 5 stars Botany contribution.
Peterson's Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs is a contribution to botany and field identification. This guide includes medicinal species, potentially dangerous ones, and plants with true healing powers. There is a description of range, habitat, medicinal uses, and a toxicity warning beside the species listing. Hundreds of species are covered, making a classic guide, one that deserves to revolutionize the botanical field guide section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Field
Peterson Field Guides has produced another winner. Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs by Steven Foster and Christopher Hobbs is a gorgeous guide book by, pardon the pun, the leaders in the field. This particular field guides sets the standard by which all medicinal plant guides should follow. Brilliant colour photographs of the over 500 identified species organized by colour for quick reference helps any novice quickly identify the plant and what'll happen if you try to make tea out of it. The detailed plant descriptions also include scientific name, family, location found, historical medicinal uses as well as highlighted warnings for poisons, allergies and other areas of caution. A very unique and special field guide Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs also offers harvesting and conservation tips. Pick this book up before you even considering picking flowers, herbs or plants for uses other than the filling your vase, it's a must have for anyone spending any extended time in the outdoors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book with a lot of information.
Do not look at it as a biological treatise for plants. It contains great pictures and talks about plants and habitats in general. You want to have a casual read during some lazy afternoon this is a book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars A serious disappointment
I was hoping this would be the botanical answer to "Animal." Boy, was I wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Understanding of Plants and Global Habitats
"By now, most people know that we're poised on the brink of a biological disaster that could rival anything in evolutionary history...what most gardeners don't realize is that, if current trends continue, a devastating number of the world's flowering plants could be extinct in the coming decades." ~Janet Marinelli

2-0 out of 5 stars ignorant and angry but useful
Chase's angry critique of "environmentalists" and their myths of nature has its points, but he ignores most of the substantial efforts to manage our ecosystem holistically -- e.g. including land, people, and money. He criticizes "biocentrism" but many of us recognize that human life, for example, is totally dependent on other organisms, E. coli to start. The question is not hierarchy, but interdependence.
5-0 out of 5 stars eye-opening clear analysis that changed my views
Until reading "In a Dark Wood" I espoused "politically correct" environmentalist views -- such as "all old growth forests must be saved at any cost from evil logging" -- in a knee-jerk, emotionally charged, self-righteous way, without ever taking the trouble to study or think through what was really at stake, and what premises about reality underlay my views.Alston Chase's thinking on conservation is so clearly presented, so well backed by evidence, so carefully analysed, and so full of good will and integrity, that I find it impossible to read his book without respecting his intentions -- and his conclusions, which challenge everything I had unthinkingly assumed in the past. This is the kind of book that not only addresses concrete problems, such as the political struggle between, say Earth First and Maxxam Corporation, but also inspires the reader to think more deeply, and question his/her assumptions. This is the kind of book I think most self-labeled "environmentalists" -- especially those who come from white, middle class, college-educated backgrounds -- will dismiss prior to investigation, and will never read.If so, it is a sad loss. It's a book that can change your views and help you learn to think better -- and I believe most people would rather not do so, since thinking better might well spoil the dramatic excitement of waging a war of good against evil, nature against humanity.Still, I hope people will read this book. It's one that changed my life. ...
