I recently aquired this book and inside, you'll find a sintilating selection of latin names and meanings of all the animals you study and love.Things that make common sense and others that will blow your mind.Things that you have to memorize for classes become easy when you read their meanings and roots.Excellent for trying to remember the scientific names of all animals.From parrots to lizards to gerbils, you'll find it all here.Big book!

A Plethora of Information for Anyone in Love with Zoology
I first saw this book in my high school library about 2 years ago.Assoon as I laid eyes on it, I knew that I had to get it.Now a sophomore incollege, for as long as I can remember, Zoology for me was the mostinteresting thing to study.But there was always this obstacle of notbeing able to fully participate in the "-ology" of the"zoa," if you will, due to me not understanding most of the Latinlanguage.One thing I will say about this book, is that not only does itremove this hinderance, but it also showed me how many english words havetheir roots in Latin, the most common ones in my opinion being dent=teeth,pod=foot and derm=skin.Anyway, I can go on forever, but I'll stop here.If you are interested in Animals, this book is definitely for you!!! ... A fine reference
I am not trained in zoology and approach this subject as a complete amateur and a beginner amateur at that. This book is lavishly illustrated with expert and precise drawings as well as breathtaking photography that is more than adequat in conveying the beauty and complexity of the book's subject matter. a wonderful book about turtles that should always be in print
This is an obvious labor of love by a sympathetic and careful observer of a local population of spotted turtles in New England. The writing, illustrations and fine details bring to vivid life the most mundane activities of these gentle beasts. If you have any interest in turtles track down a copy of this book!

A superb easy reading book!
A must-read!
AFantastic Read
Dinosaur Bone is a fantastic read. A great Book for any Herper!!!
Meshaka, Butterfield, and Hauge accurately and comprehensively described the many species of introduced herpetofauna that have found there way into the Florida ecosystem.A great supplement to any field guide, this book answers many of those "Why isn't this thing in Petersons?" questions that have plagued many a herper traveling through Florida. The book has a lot of info on Sea Turtles.
This book has information on how to identify a sea turtle, how they nest, where to see them nest, and how to help save the sea turtles.I learned a lot from this book, so I advise you to get it.I'm only 11, so it's hardfor me to write more complcated than this, but the book was wonderful!!! ... Another winner by Mark Blum
It would be difficult to assemble a finer 3-D book. Everything works. Until you see this book, you have not seen a frog, a snake or a gecko. The detail in the eyes, feet and tongues are amaizing. This book really puts things in perspective. For children AND adults.

History, biology, habitat, and life cycles

in this book, Manaster gives lots of info on the past. folklore, tales, and the like. She gives info on the people who have studied them greatly. she shows how they are tied to our past. But, if you i looking for a bookthat tells you how to care for these wonderful creatures, you'll need tolook somewhere else. there is no animal husbandry. No info on keeping themhappy and healthy. So, if you are looking for history, it's a great book;if you need helpful information, try another book.

a damn good book that you should buy
ok, theres a lil something for everyone here, some tales, some science, some husbandry, and pix too! whats lacking is more about the horny toads in mexico, especially pix! its not fair to tell us theres 14 species and onlyshow us pix of 7! still tho, you cant really snivel, since information onhorned lizards is so hard to find. at any rate buy this book, its worth it. ... Excellent overview of the conservation of turtles
-Turtle Conservation is a much-needed overview of the problems facing turtle populations in the world today.Klemens and company make a critical assessment of the threats facing turtles and the solutions often propounded to save them.The sad state of the world's turtle populations is made clear (as Klemens notes, turtles may be in as much trouble as amphibians, but haven't received as much attention), and the causes of decline are reviewed in chapters covering groups of turtles inhabiting different general habitats (marine, river, still freshwater, and terrestrial), as well as the effectiveness of various conservation methods for the unique needs of each group.A common thread in all the chapters is that the techniques that have been employed (headstarting, farming, "sustainable harvest," etc) to conserve turtles in the past are largely "halfway technologies," which treat symptoms and not causes of decline.The message is that less "hands on" approaches are the most effective in the long run, which means habitat conservation and better planning of development.This is not a picture book or an introduction to turtle biology, but a critical look at the conservation needs of turtles.
