5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a great find
I recently aquired this book and inside, you'll find a sintilating selection of latin names and meanings of all the animals you study and love.Things that make common sense and others that will blow your mind.Things that you have to memorize for classes become easy when you read their meanings and roots.Excellent for trying to remember the scientific names of all animals. From parrots to lizards to gerbils, you'll find it all here.Big book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Plethora of Information for Anyone in Love with Zoology
I first saw this book in my high school library about 2 years ago.Assoon as I laid eyes on it, I knew that I had to get it.Now a sophomore incollege, for as long as I can remember, Zoology for me was the mostinteresting thing to study. But there was always this obstacle of notbeing able to fully participate in the "-ology" of the"zoa," if you will, due to me not understanding most of the Latinlanguage. One thing I will say about this book, is that not only does itremove this hinderance, but it also showed me how many english words havetheir roots in Latin, the most common ones in my opinion being dent=teeth, pod=foot and derm=skin.Anyway, I can go on forever, but I'll stop here.If you are interested in Animals, this book is definitely for you!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book about turtles that should always be in print
This is an obvious labor of love by a sympathetic and careful observer of a local population of spotted turtles in New England. The writing, illustrations and fine details bring to vivid life the most mundane activities of these gentle beasts. If you have any interest in turtles track down a copy of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb easy reading book!
A must-read!
5-0 out of 5 stars AFantastic Read
Dinosaur Bone is a fantastic read. Written in a gripping style by the world's expert on bone microstructure, this book explains one of the most recently developed and most useful techniques for the study of dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Dr. Chinsamy-Turan brings freshness to the subject that engages the reader from the first page to the last. Anyone who likes dinosaurs will find this book a fascinating look at a field that is revolutionizing our understanding of these magnificent creatures. Chapters on how bones are formed and structured, how dinosaurs grew and on the biology of early birds are presented in an accessible and easy to read fashion. It is amazing how the author takes a complicated subject and makes it understandable to readers from high school students to professors. She saves the best for last with a chapter on dinosaur physiology in which she discusses whether dinosaurs were hot-blooded or cold-blooded and how dinosaur bone helps answer that question. This book is a must read for anyone interested in dinosaur biology. It is appropriate for the young student in high school who is intrigued with dinosaurs as well as the graduate student in geology or physiology who is studying these animals as a profession. An amazing achievement, this book will stand as a landmark, not only in the field of paleontology, but in the field of modern ecology as well. Bones tell us tales about today's reptiles and mammals just as they do about yesterday's dinosaurs. Dinosaur Bone brings it all together in one place. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great Book for any Herper!!!
Meshaka, Butterfield, and Hauge accurately and comprehensively described the many species of introduced herpetofauna that have found there way into the Florida ecosystem.A great supplement to any field guide, this book answers many of those "Why isn't this thing in Petersons?" questions that have plagued many a herper traveling through Florida. Complete with maps outlining known localities of specific species, some fine photography, as well as historical perspectives on these introduced species, this book has not only found its way into the field with me, but has also made its way to my coffee table.I hope this spark causes a wildfire ofdescriptive field guides which begin to accurately identify and bring attention to the growing concern of introduced species throughout the United States. ... It would be difficult to assemble a finer 3-D book. Everything works. Until you see this book, you have not seen a frog, a snake or a gecko. The detail in the eyes, feet and tongues are amaizing. This book really puts things in perspective. For children AND adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars History, biology, habitat, and life cycles
Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Horned Lizards by freelance writer and Austin, Texas-based historian Jane Manaster is an informed and informative guide to a fascinating group of Southwestern lizards, who are colloquially referred to as "horny toads", and who posses a very special and distinctive place in both Old West folklore and Native American mythology. The history, biology, habitat, and life cycles of these amazing creatures is accessibly surveyed, as well as contemporary conservation efforts seeking to preserve this threatened species. Black-and-white photographs and a brief inset section of color plates enhance this enjoyable and highly recommended contribution to wildlife and natural history studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars no useful information
in this book, Manaster gives lots of info on the past. folklore, tales, and the like. She gives info on the people who have studied them greatly. she shows how they are tied to our past. But, if you i looking for a bookthat tells you how to care for these wonderful creatures, you'll need tolook somewhere else. there is no animal husbandry. No info on keeping themhappy and healthy. So, if you are looking for history, it's a great book;if you need helpful information, try another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars a damn good book that you should buy
ok, theres a lil something for everyone here, some tales, some science, some husbandry, and pix too! whats lacking is more about the horny toads in mexico, especially pix! its not fair to tell us theres 14 species and onlyshow us pix of 7! still tho, you cant really snivel, since information onhorned lizards is so hard to find. at any rate buy this book, its worth it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the conservation of turtles
-Turtle Conservation is a much-needed overview of the problems facing turtle populations in the world today.Klemens and company make a critical assessment of the threats facing turtles and the solutions often propounded to save them. The sad state of the world's turtle populations is made clear (as Klemens notes, turtles may be in as much trouble as amphibians, but haven't received as much attention), and the causes of decline are reviewed in chapters covering groups of turtles inhabiting different general habitats (marine, river, still freshwater, and terrestrial), as well as the effectiveness of various conservation methods for the unique needs of each group.A common thread in all the chapters is that the techniques that have been employed (headstarting, farming, "sustainable harvest," etc) to conserve turtles in the past are largely "halfway technologies," which treat symptoms and not causes of decline. The message is that less "hands on" approaches are the most effective in the long run, which means habitat conservation and better planning of development. This is not a picture book or an introduction to turtle biology, but a critical look at the conservation needs of turtles. It gives practical information and suggestions on how to protect our dwindling turtle populations.I recommend this authoritative book not only for those interested in turtle conservation (for whom it is required reading), but anyone interested in conservation of biological diversity, because it illustrates how each group of organisms has its own specific conservation needs, and yet how all are joined by the same requirement for habitat conservation. ...
