5-0 out of 5 stars Crocs Rule and So Does This Book!
If you're an avid viewer of "The Crocodile Hunter", as I am, than this book is a must have.True, much of the information in can be picked up from the show. However, I actually enjoyed reading about Steve and Terri's adventures a bit more than watching them. You learn more about their families and what motivates them. After reading the book, I've developed a desire to learn more about wildlife conservation and what part I can play in it.I would highly recommend this book for any animal lover or Crocodile Hunter fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but too darned short!
To millions around the world, Steve Irwin is known as "the Crocodile Hunter," thanks to his wildly popular series on Animal Planet. To millions more, he's known as "that crazy Australian guy."THE CROCODILE HUNTER, a book by Steve and Terri Irwin, won't change anyone's mind about Steve's sanity, nor will it provide new insight into the man and his adventures for those already intimately familiar with his television exploits.THE CROCODILE HUNTER will, however, provide a few hours of distraction from the tube and more leisurely exploration of Steve and Terri's usual talking points about wildlife conservation.3-0 out of 5 stars adventurers tend not to be introspective
disappointing. a short work. steve's life is presented in little more than outline depth. while atriculate on tv, doesn't transfer to the written page.Read more

Excellent safari companion showing various animals and describing them, their habitat, etc.Recommended for anyone going on safari.

5-0 out of 5 stars African animal sighting tips your mother never told you and your father didn't know
This is a book of biblic quality for the uninitiated.I did not appreciate the diversity of the wildlife available in Kenya and Tanzania.Wow, this is worthwhile study guide as a prologue to your journey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not find it that useful in E. Africa
The pictures are black and white drawings. We brought this and the Audubon Society Guide to African Wildlife (or something like that) and we much preferred the Audubon book.It was more compact, had a durable vinyl cover and had color pictures with quick facts on each animal - which is really what you want in the moment on a bumpy safari game drive.I would get the other book instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for beginning and intermediate birders
The alphabetical indexing is excellent for those who have not mastered the taxanomic order as found in most lists and books. The presentation of the song before the identification is useful in honing ones ears.Would like it to be longer than the ~110 species presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best bird song training & reviewguide
This is an outstanding CD for learning bird songs. Each song starts with the bird song and then the narrator describes the song and provides a short phrase or description that aids you with identifying it, followed again with the essence of the song. This format allows you to quiz yourself.I bought my first copy two years ago and have bought 5 more to give to friends since then.Everyone has commented that its a great guide.I own several other guides including Birding by Ear and More Birding by Ear and this is by far my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended & exactly what I was looking for.
The CD arrived in the mail yesterday, and I've listened to it once all the way through. The bird songs were recorded in Wisconsin and I live in Connecticut, and I recognized most of the songs as ones I had heard near my house, so it seems that birds selected for inclusion on the CD are widespread enough to make the CD useful for most of the eastern US.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Living in California oak country, I have searched for just such a book to help learn about these beautiful trees. This is the best information I've found.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful
If you are used to books with line drawing of leaves that make it impossible to use as a reference, then you will love this book.It is a great study as well as a beauty. If you only have one book on the Oaks of California, this should be it.If you have many books on Oaks, this is still going to be one of the most used. Useful and beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love California's oaks...
this is a magnificent book. I just cannot get over the glory of the native oaks and this book captures that glory well. It covers all native species with a nice amount of detail. The photographs are beautiful. What I actually found the most intriguing was the great history the authors provide on the oaks, and the incredible ecosystem that depends on their existence. The book even provides information on parks and drives statewide where mature native oaks can be visited. I have had this book for many months now and it is one I continually pick up again and again. It inspired me to plant several native oaks at home and take inpeccable care of the one large oak (treasure) that came as an added bonus to a beautiful old home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for the serious birder
This book is one of my favorite birding books. I am reticent to call it a field guide because it is so much more than that. Incredible amounts of information on all the sparrows. Great range maps AND descriptions of migration and vagrancy (can I hope to see this bird in my area?), and all the other natural history and behavior information you'd expect. Beautiful plates showing ALL the different plumages, primary and basic, male, female and juvenal. And it's not just a wealth of information, it's a beautiful book, well written and a delight to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foxfire 5 is excellent.
The information contained within Foxfire 5 has come in handy for Duane many a times for learning how to do stuff. Most of the old methods are now lost to the current generation of Americans. It is a good reference for someone who wants to learn hands-on skills, such as blacksmithing and other independent living skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected it to be
I have the Foxfire two book which goes into detail about how to take sheep's wool, card it, spin it and make something. It also tell how to build a horse wagon. There are lots of pictures and drawings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another "MUST HAVE" for your bookshelf
If you enjoy the Appalachian culture, you'll love theFOXFIRE books. Volume No. 5 covers bear hunting, blacksmithing and gun making. If you've never read these books, it may be difficult, since the text is written in the vernacular of the mountain folk, but this adds to the charm and "character" of the books. The bear hunting stories wer entertaining, but I really enjoyed reading about Hacker Martin and Hershall House. If you want to know how life really was in the Smokey Mountains, read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written story of an almost forgotten tragedy
This is a very well written story about the tragedy of the 1938 hurricane that, without warnning, hit Long Island and the coast of New England. This hurricane changed the look of shore lines, islands and lives. It wiped out entire families, left a school bus driver forever haunted by the loss of all the children in his care, and yet miraculously spared others while destroying everything around them. This is a good book that tells a story of struggle, courage, loss, and survival.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read despite some flaws
R.A. Scotti presents a riveting account of the 1938 hurricane that slammed into Long Island and then wreaked havoc in New England. The strength of this book lies with the personal accounts of the survivors, including the rich and famous such as Katherine Hepburn, as well as everyday people such as frightened children at a party fleeing to an attic to escape the rising waters, passengers on a train crowded into forward cabins as waves eroded the rail bed, and numerous coastal residents caught unaware by the storm.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for a weather nerd, ended up reading it myself!
I bought this book for my husband, the Weather Channel junkie. (If you know anyone who watches Storm Stories, this is the *perfect* gift for them.) But when I glanced inside, I was immediately drawn into the sheer human drama of this awful storm. The prose is elegant and not too ornate; sometimes a more spare approach is just what's needed. The story is shocking and amazing all by itself, without elaboration. Hubby got the book eventually, but not until I finished it!

    Editorial Review

Pink dolphins--and yes, in the Amazon River the flamingo-colored mammals do exist--are believed by Brazilians and Peruvians to take human form, impregnate women, lure lovers to an underwater paradise, and in various ways drive those who encounter them mad. They seem to have worked their magic on science writer Sy Montgomery, who journeys through rain forests and sunken cities in a mad-dash pursuit of the enigmatic creatures. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but Frustrating
As someone who's interested in the Amazon, its people, culture, geography, fauna, flora and other subjects, I read this book for its fascinating topic. However, this is a very mixed bag. There are moving sections, as when she describes the genocide perpetrated against the native peoples by Europeans (you would not believe the atrocities and torture they visited the Indians, whom they considered lower than animals - much worse in its ferocity than the Holocaust of WWII).The writing can be quite bad at times (at one point, her powers of description comes up with a fruit she tried, "bitter as semen").But the worse is, she seems to be a very bad science writer and researcher.Who edited this book?Certainly not people versed in science or Portuguese. She gets everything in Portuguese wrong. The scientific names and terms are often misspelled.Proceed with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars enchanting travelogue and work of natural history
I loved this book! Sy Montgomery is a talented writer, able to put you in exotic places with vivid descriptions, I almost felt I was in the Amazon. She really brought it to life, I look forward to reading another book of hers I have purchased, "Search for the Golden Moon Bear."4-0 out of 5 stars Amazonian vacation
This is one of those books to read when you don't have the money and/or time to actually travel the planet.I enjoyed that Sy both had a grasp of biology and is a truly talented author. She also obviously cares about the socioeconomic situation of the peoples who live in the area that her biological studies took her. This book transports you into a magical world in which pink dolphins inhabit rivers in a mystical jungle.Sometimes the truth is better than fiction. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite worthless, but almost
I took this guide to Oaxaca to carry in the field, as the Howell guide is so heavy.I almost threw it over the cliff at Monte Alban. It will help you remember which euphonia is which, but for anything more subtly marked it is almost no help at all.Furthermore, there are no range maps, no details on alternate plumages, little to no information on vocalizations.I would have done better to bring the old Peterson guide, even though it is out of date.

2-0 out of 5 stars Substandard in almost every regard
To be sure, this field guide is better than having no field guide. If birds posed for observation, it would be a great field guide. But for the real world this guide is disorganized in text and illustrations beyond excuse.I'm not sure this is the author's fault. It may be due to the publisher cutting costs.Still, no excuse.A birder will pay a premium for a great field guide.Illustrations are jammed together on each plate with no regard to proportionate size, or to other birds on that plate. For example, kingfishers are intermixed with trogons, motmots, swallows and woodpeckers on 3 separate plates. The amazon kingfisher is on one plate; the similar green kingfisher is 2 plates later.Quick comparison is impossible.Seven trogons are together on one plate, but the elegant trogon is 2 plates later. Some woodpeckers are on each of plates 20, 21 & 22; the imperial woodpecker is on plate 45.First I cried, then I laughed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, but disorganized
This book has what Peterson's "Mexican Birds" lacks: good colour pictures of (nearly) all birds of Mexico and adjacent areas and their Spanish names. However, the presentation of the pictures is a mishmash. The descriptions of the birds are not detailed but very short. It is a pity that there is no information about the behaviour of the birds, often very important for identification. ... Read more

Conifers grow old, big and tall in California. What better book for discovering the coniferous bounty that the state has to offer. Second only behind Mexico in native conifer species, the conifer elevates the landscape and become an indelible symbolic reflection of all that is natural in California, from theSierra rich in yellow, sugar and Jefferey Pine to the isolated groves of heavy sequoia, magnificent in their collosal staure. High in the White Mountains of Eastern California, living at seemingly impossible heights the bristlecone pine lives long and prosperous in stauesque poses in an inhospitable environment. The redwood defines the Northern coast, living lavishly in mist shrouded groves. The mighty Tahoe National Forest displays a rich blanket of fine firs as far as the eye can see...

5-0 out of 5 stars Lanner (the author) is a genius.....
