5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous help to this novice
When I started a new hobby of photographing wildflowers, I had no clue on the importance of learning plant families in order to identify them. If I couldn't tell from the picture in a field guide, I was up a creek. "Botany in a Day" was the first book I found that organized the families in a simple, clear way that I could understand and this system has become my main guide for grouping and identification. The herbal information is interesting, but not relevant to my project. I'm very grateful for the help I've received from this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intention, disappointing result
This book could have been a gem for people interested in botany and healing plants, but it does not manage to fill this void. The text is not read by a professional botanist (I assume) and incorrect or dubious facts are common.Furthermore, the text is filled with typos and misspellings that could easily have been caught in a simple spell-checking program. The figures are from older literature and are not well reproduced. The aim with this book, to explain botany in a day, is highly recommendable, but I cannot recommend this book in its present shape and quality-level. A completely corrected, re-formatted, and revised edition of this book is needed. For people interested in the plant families of North America I instead recommend the high-quality work of Zomlefer: Guide to Flowering Plant Families.

3-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to plant families
Though definitely *not* a field guide. This book is intended to be an introduction to plant families, and it does a good job at that. All the vascular plant families present in North America are briefly described and identification tips noted. Very few actual species are thoroughly described, though the "medicinal" properties of many species, mostly collected from other sources, are recounted here. This book would be better titled "Herbalism in a Day" as it's long on lists of medicinal uses and short on detailed botanical information. I'm pleased I purchased it, but it would be a inadequate substitute for an actual field guide or flora. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Each flower's entry includes a color photograph, text description, information on its bloom season & habitat range, & more
Printed on heavy stock, water-resistant paper and featuring stunning full color photography throughout, East Gulf Coastal Plain Wildflowers is a field guide wildflowers found in a region of the United States including Southwest Georgia, Northwest Florida, Southern Alabama, Southern Mississippi, and parts of Southeastern Louisiana. An introduction and overview offers maps, information about floral diversity, and tips for using the guide, yet the bulk of East Gulf Coastal Plain Wildflowers is devoted to single-column entries of individual blossoms. Each flower's entry includes a color photograph, extensive text description, information on its bloom season and habitat range, and more. A glossary and index round out this superb quick-reference field guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Might Have Wanted to Know about Flowers
William C. Burger's "Flowers: How They Changed the World" is certainly a labor of love. His clear and enthusiastic prose transported me back to a course in botany I had at the University of Arizona around 1970.As a zoologist I had had little contact with botany, but I had always been interested in the subject. The course I took in botany opened up this fascinating world and I now remember the hours I spent in class and in hunting flowering plants in the desert as golden. This book brought all that delight back.
5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books
Flowers are one of the most attractive aspects of the outdoors; but they didn't evolve just for humans to appreciate. Botanist and science writer William Burger examines the role of flowers in the natural world, from how their bright colors and shapes attract and induce animals to help with pollination to how they serve as an energy resource. Chapters survey flowers, their pollinators, and how flowers have enabled ecosystems to survive in his lively blend of botanical research and wide-ranging natural history insights. A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's just "OK"
Less than impressive small, thin paperback.Profiles only a small amount of species. There are at least a few errors: mislabeled photos and incorrectly identified species of plants and fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Manual to have.
This manual is worht the money and is very helpful in the types of Aquarium plants that work best with different species of fish and water conditions. I found this maunual to be well worth the money and very helpful and it does have diagrams to show you exactly what you're being instructed on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price 4++ stars
This little book is a very good value. It covers more than 40 different plants in its encylopedia section in addition to itsglossary and several different info sections, including info on lighting, nutrients, selection and care. It gives more info about plants than can be obtained in the more general information books and is very inexpensive. It could be organized a little better but it is still very useful and very much worth the price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars W O W what a book!
This is the absolute book for wildflowers.Pictures are clear and precise, the information is a bonus. What a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Field Guide for Flowers!
Wildflowers of Tennessee is easy to use when locating a particular flower. It also contains good descriptions which help to indentify each flower. The photography is clean and clear. I'd highly recommend this book if the Tennessee, Ohio Valley, and Southern Appalachians are areas you frequent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book at a Great Price
There are several things that set this book apart from other field guides. The plasticized cover, heavy stock paper, and page size make for an excellent and robust field guide. The quick color guide in the front makes short work of identification. The photos are taken from the aspect at which you would discover the plant, also helping with identification.Descriptions are will written and complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best alpine flower guide
I grew up and live in the summer in a Colorado ghost town at 9,000 ft.altitude surrounded by 13,000 ft. mountains. This is the best guide for Colorado alpine flowers I have ever seen.Great illustrations, fine explanatory notes - a must have for alpine flower afficianados.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best one I've seen!
I go to Coloradobackpacking, rafting and climbing every summer and of all the field guides I have ever had, this one is the best!It has very easy to use color format so you can find any flower in a matter of seconds. KEEP IT HANDY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good one!
This book is just what I was looking for a reference book in the field and home.It has both photos and drawings of each plant. One plant per page and the pages are nicely grouped by flower color which is visible on thepage edges as well. The indexes, as usual in nature books of this type, have both common name and Latin name of each plant.Included are black andwhite diagrams of leave types and flower head patterns with glossary.Eachitem listed has a synopsis of flowers, leaves, what"~ kind ofimmediate environment it grows in, "Life Zone(s)" i.e. foothills, alpine, etc., and flowering time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Texas and Louisiana
This is a good book on wildflowers, vines, shrubs, trees of Texas and adjoining parts of Louisiana.Pictures are generally very good and are grouped by color and in a section by themselves. Each picture has a number reference and looking up the number gives you plant ID information and a range map.My biggest criticism of the book is that it just doesn't cover enough species - for what it does cover, it is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a great little field guide....
I own several field guides to Texas wildflowers, and I find this one to be the best among them. There are books with bigger and better photographs, but none come close to having the nearly 400 color photos this one has. This one also has maps of growing areas for each plant identified and very clear descriptions of each plant. It even has sections on Texas' endangered species and landscaping with native plants.Read more

Editorial Review

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle.Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide
Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide.Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used.I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers
Excellent source of information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Identification
There are excellent photos in this book, grouped by color and then by flower complexity. Each picture in the photos section then has a reference to a printed page where detailed information about the plant/flower is presented. It is easy to use and great for an "amateur".My only complaint with the book is that there simply isn't quite enough of it... but, overall it is far and away the best wildflower book I've seen and I have about a dozen different books I use to try to identify wildflowers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "midwest gardening for dummies"
WONDERFUL - not pretentious or "snobby" in its' writing, perfect for an Arizona gal like me to learn the midwest from the ground up, literally.Again, I have yet to read this one cover to cover, which is definitely on my summer reading list, but I have used it as a handy reference to plants/flowers/shrubs I already have and ones I plan to purchase in the future.I can already see my "black thumb" turning a wee bit green - not to jinx myself, lol.Great for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike - I highly recommend it.

After receiving this book as a gift, I felt obligated to try to turn my brown yard into at least a small spot of color. With the guidance and help from Laara's book, my drab fenceline is now lined with beautiful perennial flowers that are low maintenance and high color bringing joy to my family and the songbirds in the area. I even tried buying and growing a rose plant and this spring intend to plant more. The instructions about planting, mulchign and feeding the roses really made a difference. They were beautiful all summer. The book can even make a brown thumb like mine green. ... Read more
