5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
This book is a wonderful tool for anyone that wishes to learn the anatomy of a horse. I use it with my animal massage and animal communication clients to better show exactly where on the horse they have an issue. It is nice for those people that do not want to see the anatomy of a cadaver animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool!
I am an instructor/trainer and this book is wonderful for informing students how the horses body is put together and why some horses move differently than others. It also gives the student a chance to see the inside workings of the horse so that they better understand the vet and farrier when they have to explain what is wrong with the horse and treatment options. This book would also benefit anyone who wants to know more about the horse's anatomy. Not to mention it is fun to color!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Muscle Sketches
I wish that I had this book last year. I did a muscle and joint force project for which I needed detailed muscle diagrams of the horse's hindquarters. When I needed the illustrations, of course, I could not find any that had the appropriate level of detail (not online, through videos, books, etc). For this reason when I recently saw this book it. I would strongly recommend that any other rider or person with a starting interest in horse healthcare do the same. This is an excellent addition to a equine reference library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
All my questions were answered after reading this book. Helps you decide if horse ownership is right for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Every Horse Owner
Cherry Hill has done it again. Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is a must- have for all horse owners. It includes grooming tips, a barn-care schedule, and even a suggested layout for your farm! It also includes tips on choosing land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scratches that itch
Ms. Hill has written a book that fits in well with the psyches of horse-lovers--those who may have just one horse, a herd or stableful, or know that someday they will be a horseowner. It's a book to inspire, inform, encourage, and gently correct when necessary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Save your money.Spend time with your horse.Go to an actual clinic or trainer if you can afford it.Parelli's writing is difficult. The concepts are difficult to understand and there is little practical or useful information.Horses are fairly simple.Parelli makes it sound exotic. It's not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man and horse unite
I would recommend or even make it mandatory for everyone even thinking of going near a horse to read this book. Pat Parelli gets it from the horses point of view, and makes it easy for us to get it too. I have a 2, 3 and 4 yr horse. I have worked with all of them utilizing the theories presented in this book. I have also bought his partnership level 1 and the tools to go with it. It works, my horses are responsive and a joy to be with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Popular but expensive and often unsafe
Mr Parelli writes in a self-opinionated, pompous style about horses, trying to give the impression that he is the guru of all things equine. While his methods have undoubtedly enabled a large number of people to improve their relationship with their horse, one must remember that there are untold millions who have a wonderful relationship with their horse which owes nothing to either his expensively-marketed system or the costly, cutely-named gadgets which seem to be an integral part of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Impossible that present day horses would beat any horse trained by Preston Burch.Just read the exercise prescriptions in this book and be blown away.I certainly was. Here is carefully controlled training by a trainer understanding that his horses are participating in an athletic event. This is a book about conditioning equine athletes and also contains every other aspect of training and caring for thoroughbred race horses in a well written book by an individual who apparently understood the great care required.I held off reading this fearing it was dated, but what a pleasant surprise to find the extreme if succinct comprehensiveness here, every aspect is covered by a fellow who tried to do everything correctly. This is Ivers before Ivers, and one does wonder whatever happened to trainers like Max Hirsch and Preston Burch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preston Burch, where are you?
If every owner had a trainer like Preston Burch, there would be a lot more owners.5-0 out of 5 stars If you are just starting in this business...read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Anyone who spends time with horses owes it to themselves and the horses to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sends a good message
An enjoyable read, well written, easy to understand.I have always questioned the integrity and motivation of the many clinicians out there who have invented and marketed a new mouse trap. He is right on the money when he discusses folks who get so hung up on minor technique that they lose sight of where they are trying to get.The author presents a common sense and deep thinking approach to horsemanship based on experiences learned and observed.Having started hundreds of colts myself, Marks insights into the nature of horses have added to my understanding of them and helped me to become a better horseman...something we should all strive to be regardless of experience or expertise. If you read the whole book and don't learn something worthwhile you aren't trying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read, great philosophy!
This book is a fantastic read, I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. It also presents a great philosophy to training and working with horses.Mark Rashid describes how to be a leader that your horse not only respects, but likes and wants to be with.He also gives great examples of how to overcome resistance issues without any form of force. His approach comes from Aikido which is a martial art in which you use your opponents energy to overcome resistance.I loved this book and want to read all Rashids other books now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Lots of great information
This book has answered many of my questions I have had about horses.I even learned information I never thought to ask about.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!
I love this book! It has so much info! It tells about lots of breeds, and they're all mixed through the book. I'm glad that it tells about my favorite breeds as well as others that I've never heard of, or I don't know a lot about. This book has over 400 pages, but it dosen't cover horse care. My local librery bought it for $40, but Idon't know how much it costs here (Amazon). Get this awesome book, it covers so much, including the Spanish riding school and a horse called Coogenhogan. This book is high on my wishlist, and it's a wonderful book. I would like to know about the revisesd edition, if there is one. Buy this book, no matter how much it costs!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get an overview on American Miniature Horses
This is a great book to purchase if you are looking at an overview of American Miniature Horses and what is involved with their care, upkeep and what one can do with these unique equines from keeping them as pets to having them as show animals.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought the book hoping to gain some additional insight into the world of showing & breeding mini horses. If you have been around the show ring at all and have some showing experience - especially in hand, then this is not the book for you.Clipping a bridle path is the same regardless of size of horse. It is this type of elementary subject material discussed in the book.As for breeding, the author recommends live cover as AI for mini's is almost non-existent.I believe you could gain more knowledge from the miniature horse registry than from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of Women and Horses
Fabulous book, I've bought it several times, makes a great gift for my horse loving friends and for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the love of horses.
I bought this book as a gift for my youngest daughter who shares the love of horses with me. The photos are gorgeous. The essays of these horse women are beautifully written, full of imagery and delve into the spirit of women's connection with these magnificent animals. I highly recommend this book to collect and cherish.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was amazing!
This book is a great book! The best one I have ever read. It makes you laugh, cry, everything. It was just an all around great book! I am really happy that GaWaNi Pony Boy made this amazing book about the connection of women and horses. Its nice to finally find a book and be able to read it and see that finally their are other women out there that understand the same relationships and love for horses as I do, I couldnt put it down. 3-0 out of 5 stars Life Lessons not Rashid's best
I have read most of Mark Rashid's books, and I had greatly anticipated reading this one hoping for more insight into horse training. If you are looking for training advice in this book you will find very little of it. The book deals mostly with what Mark learned about his own personal behavior through observing his horse Buck. One could take advice from the book I suppose but you have to dig much deeper to come away with useful tidbits. Also, don't expect any of the colorful stories of the "Old Man" that appeared in other books by Mark, there are none of those here, and only a smattering of stories about working with horses other than Buck. It is a good read, but don't expect much in the way of tips on working with horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous.Your horse will love you for it
I love the easy reading.Anyone who needs to have more confidence and fun with their horse needs this book. All of Rashids books are great! I found my patience with my Horse soar and the games and fun I have riding - make me appreciate my horse even more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took my breath away!
This is the third book of Mark's that I've read in the last two months. He is an amazing writer and brings with him the understanding of how to not only create a compassionate relationship with horses but with our world. He is a teacher in the truest sense. His relationship with his horse Buck has enriched anyone who has read his words.

4-0 out of 5 stars This an interesting read
I recieved this book as a gift and I didn't know what to expect. When I finally got around to reading it, I found it very interesting. I think it's important to know that it's not really a hands-on or practical book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, interesting
While I'll agree that the book is not full of technical issues, it is an excellent book well worth your time in reading.I read both this one and "Horses never lie" and have found both to be excellent. Not only does it offer a heartwarming viewpoint, it also offers ideas and causes you to look a little deeper into your relationship with your horse.Great read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but disappointing
I was expecting photos of the old greats...Muscat,Bask,Huckleberry Bey etc, also more body shots of the horses. When I saw Padron on the cover I thought "wow, I can finally find a book with some pictures of Padron in it"....not!
5-0 out of 5 stars Capturing the spirit of these amazing animals
When I was a girl, I had the privilege of having Johnny Johnston take my photo as I received an award at an Arabian show.It was the best photo of my horse and I that anyone had ever taken. When I look at it now, I still think how amazing it is to have this moment frozen in time. The book is filled with personal moments like that as well as representations of the moods and talents Arabian horses are capable of, whether at rest in the pasture or in their racing colors with a jockey aboard. This book is worth every penny you spend if you are lucky enough to find a copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great value for the price.
This purchase was a disappointment. It is not what one would call a true "coffee table" book, judging by the contents, the number of pages, or the over-all quality. Several of the reproductions are grainy or seem to have been included more for their landscape interest than the horses that happen to be in view. It is unpaginated and there are only 75 numbered photos. Anyone who has subscribed to one of the Arabian horse magazines for any length of time in the past has already seen the best of Johnny Johnston's horse portraiture. It took less than 30 minutes to read this thin volume and to look at each picture. There is mention on the last page of a second volume to follow. Too bad they didn't double the size of this one to start with to make it more worthwhile. I'll spend my money on carrots for the horses instead of buying the "next" book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Although it's a wonderful and helpful book...
It should really have more important information, such as a summery of costs, tips on picking the perfect horse fo lessons, hiring staff, stuff that you REALLY need to know about starting your own business. Other then that, it's really a great and imformative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book covered a good range of topics.I found several new ideas well worth using in starting our business. The book was definately well worth buying!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
I found this book to be an extremely fun read.I firmly believe that the foundation to any successful business is marketing because if people don't know your business then you have no clients. This book gives some creative ideas to advertise your business along with some fun money-maker activities to plan. However, it is not a very complete guide to starting and running a horse business because there is a lot more to think about when starting a business than colors and horse shows. This is why I find the title to be a bit misleading.I bought this book along with "Business Planner and Bookkeeper for the Horse Enterprise" and found the two books to be an extremely helpful pair.As with any business though, one or two books can not teach you how to be successful. To anyone who is serious about starting a business, I recommend reading as many books as possible about running a business, not just this one. ... Although this book is entitled "The Elements of Dressage" Col. von Ziegner really presents the elements of basic training of any horse! His version of the training scale is much easier to understand and follow than the German approved version (even though he helped develop the German version, he told me that many years of training has made him develop this newer scale). As a result of reading this book I went and rode with him in Germany ... an amazing experience seeing what I had read in his book being put into practice.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to ride dressage or to school a horse calmly and logically. In comparison to other dressage books I found this one a bit easier to understand and to apply to my riding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More in it than it first appears
Having so much enjoyed Hempfling's earlier book, I was at first disappointed with this one, as he gives the initial impression of being 'away with the fairies' with his Tarot Pack of equine characters!
5-0 out of 5 stars Who are you, my friend?
Mr. Hempfling sets forth for us many "character types" and his recommendations for training those character types.A man of extraordinary insight has created a landmark work, for those who are ready to receive it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was hoping to gain some valuable insights from this book.I don't expect that every book I read will jump from one valuable new idea to the next;I just hope that I can pick up one or two ideas from each. This book disappointed me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive guide yet
This was one of my college text books- I was an equine science major. It's probably the most comprehensive guide to horse nutrition and feeding practices ever written so far.It discusses different vitamin and mineral deficiencies and excess with photographs of horses suffering from these imbalances, teaches you how to calculate the nutritional needs of horses of various ages and activity levels, types of feed and hay, types of pastureland. The color section on poisonous plants is especially helpful. The book is very information intensive, but I found all of the information to be extremely useful and applicable.I retained a lot of information from this book, which I don't always do with textbooks!I think anyone who keeps their own horses or manages a stable would greatly benefit to reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking collection of essays
Having heard Dr. Miller speak about imprinting a foal, I've been a big fan of his work. He's done a lot in the field of horsemanship, helping to educate horse owners. His work is aimed at the amateur horse owner, someone who might not have a background in horses, or who only has one or two in their care. With that said, do I agree with everything he says? No, I do not. However, I did find this book to be a thought provoking collection of essays.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the flashy title
I found this book to be much better than its flashy, "whisperer-trendy" title would indicate. It is a well-written, logically built collection of key "psychological" characteristics of horses. Not directly useful as a problem-solving guide, but still a must-read, because it explains quite clearly what every horse lover should deeply absorb.

3-0 out of 5 stars Considering Ancient Secrets of the Horses Mind.
While this book contains valuable information,it is not by any means athorough text on the horses mind.It contains some controversial advice. Too many stories and too much personal information for my taste.TheAncient Secrets of the Horses Mind is big on promises but falls short ondelivery. Recommended as a training supplement only, not as the onlybook you get on training the horse. ... Read more
