3-0 out of 5 stars The Butterflies of Costa Rica
After traveling different countries and using various field guides, I can say that this one needs a lot of improvement. This book only covers a small section of species. The specimens that are used are tattered and some are difficult to use for ID purposes. In most guides, the photo description on the left usually include the page number for the text, this one doesn't. So, you have to check the name and look to the index to cross over to the text page.Speaking of names, they are only called by the Latin scientific name. This is probably not a big issue since most do not have one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
The diversity of life in the tropics is such that a tome like this covers just three of families of butterflies, not the whole lepidopteran fauna as other reviewers have pointed out. Nevertheless, these three are both important and conspicuous, including some of the most beautiful and sought after of tropical butterflies such as the Morphos, Owl Butterflies and Heliconiids. And, because of the paucity of literature for this region, this guide will prove useful well beyond the frontiers of Costa Rica where many of the same genera and even species occur - I use it all the time in Venezuela for example.

This book along with the photo essay book "Costa Rica : The Last Country the Gods Made" should be owned by anyone who loves Costa Rica, even if they think they despise nature studies as dry and limited. Buy it just for the color plates. This book's spirit is undeniable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars transformations, be grateful
Photography is simple and elegant, image is right faced page layout, text explanation of the image left face layout. This was purchased for it to be a gift. I believe it is high quality. The image definitions, colours, and natures detailed designs are clear to behold and appreciate. Better still if you are at that place in life for being able to learn and be grateful for the things we take for granted. Great for designers -from fashion through to structural engineers. Regardless of where you are at, it's a stunning book to have on the coffee table or amongst your library ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, but not helpful otherwise
This book outlines several topics, one or two pages per topic, such as birdbaths, artificial ponds, etc., various topics that are all relevant, interesting, and just what you want... but it doesn't treat any one topic thoroughly or well enough.Well before I bought this book, I already knew a bit about how to provide habitats to encourage bees (for example). This book only gave a very rough overview of how to create one type of bee environment (how to make tubes to attract mason bees) but didn't even indicate that there are other types of bees (such as bumble bees... honey bees... various other bee species, each of which need their own particular type of home built for them), let alone give guidelines how to attract them. The most important thing, choosing plants that are bird-friendly or bee-friendly or animal-friends, it handles in a very superficial manner.True, it may list a few species of plants, but it hardly gives a comprehensive list.It doesn't say anything about the plants, such as zones, light/shade preference, etc.In summary, if there's anything you want to do, such as choose plants carefully, you'll need to buy another book.Beehouses?Buy another book or scour the internet.Yes, this book will motivate you, will make you feel, how nice it will be to build a butterfly-friendly garden. But it doesn't really give you what you need to do it, besides make you feel good about it.Do you want to build a birdhouse?Scoure the internet or buy another book. The only thing this book is good for, is to tell you the few topics you should start to think about. And that, you can get just by reading the Table of Contents.Oddly, it spends many pages describing home recipes for making bird cakes and patties, out of animal fat and seeds, that you can hang up in your garden -- a sort of Martha Stewart section slipped in the middle of the book there, as though this was the only "specific" information the author had at hand.I would suggest that instead of this, you buy a book that is positively overloaded with info like Degraaf's "Trees, Shrubs, and Vines for Attracting Birds" which lists a page per specie various plants -- start there. Then look up bee boxes on the internet.Etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great projects you can do with your kids......
So you want to turn your big back yard into a wildlife refuge? The place to begin is with the NWF `ATTRACTING BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES AND OTHER BACKYARD WILDLIFE.' This book, part of the `Creative Homeowner Series includes all kinds of nifty ideas for making your yard creature-friendly. You will become interested in ridding yourself of noxious grass the upkeep of which is frustrating, a lot of work, and expensive, and probably a source of pollution in your watershed. The book explains the reason why you also want to rid yourself of invasive exotic plants and add native plantings to your yard. Many `exotics carry disease and many fail to nourish the local fauna that grew up with the native stuff.Birds, for example, find the berries from the native Dogwood much more nutritious than the fruit of the Kousa Dogwood. You want to strive for balance in your yard if you want more bird sightings. If you live far enough out in the hinterland, you may also find other creatures visit your yard (though I live in Arlington VA and my neighbor reports a raccoon is having a fish dinner every night from her pond, and I know I have smelled a skunk on many mornings).
5-0 out of 5 stars Featuring 17 great projects along with a wealth of tips
Illustrated throughout with enticing color photographs, Attracting Birds, Butterflies, And Other Backyard Wildlife by David Mizejewski (Manager, Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program) is an exceptional and highly recommended homeowner's guide featuring 17 great projects along with a wealth of tips, tricks, and techniques to create gardens filled with wildlife sights, sounds, and natural wonders. Featuring advice for obtaining certification for a backyard habitat in the NWF's Backard Wildlife Habitat program, as well as more general suggestions from building amphibian and bee nesting houses, to finding native plants, avoiding West Nile Virus in the water provided for wildlife, butterfly feeders, and so much more, Attracting Birds, Butterflies, And Other Backyard Wildlife is a first-rate informational guide and a welcome addition to personal and community library Wildlife and Gardening reference collections. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pleased and alsovery disappointed
I looked forward to receiving this book and the caterpillar photos are beyond compare except for a couple that are too dark. For those who have raised caterpillars and been interested in them these photos are magnificant.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beautiful Caterpillars
This book will change the way you feel about caterpillars. It transforms them from ugly pests into objects of beauty and of intellectual fascination. Based on more than twenty-five years of field research in the tropics by Janzen and Hallwachs and their assistants, it contains not only magnificent photos but also a wealth of information on the behavior and ecology of the species represented. It is at the same time a wonderful coffee table book and a great naturaly history read. In sum, I loved this book, and intend to give it as Christmas presents to all of my nature-loving friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget the Larvae
We don't generally like insects much, remembering how they sting, sicken, or impoverish us, and forgetting that they do us invaluable service in the reproduction of new generations of countless plant species. We do like butterflies because they are so beautiful and harmless, but we do not like caterpillars because they are squirmy and eat our plants. There are countless books featuring pictures of beautiful butterflies and moths, but few featuring the larval forms of the insect.A look at _100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica_ (The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press) by Jeffrey C. Miller, Daniel H. Janzen, and Winifred Hallwachs shows that the emphasis on the flying forms may be misplaced. The gorgeous, large-format pictures here show all the colors of which adult butterflies can boast, plus an enormous variation in patterns, spikes, hairs, body plans, and more.Indeed, after the hundred photographs, there is a section of the book devoted to detailed descriptions of the behavior and ecology of each caterpillar, and for each there is a small picture of the adult into which it will grow.Almost all the adults are more drab and less interesting than their larvae.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just another winner from the National Audubon Society Book series
This one was for me, well my husband and I and we both love it just like we love the other books in this series. We have also discovered that children who have access to the great outdoors adore these books as well as we have given them as successful gifts. They are great for outdoor family time as well as doing a little discovering on your own. Great descriptions and beautifully detailed pictures make these books tops in my opinion and that of the people whom we have give them to. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized reference
This reference is easily used by a beginning non-professional as it contains the information in one place (unlike Peterson). Wish it had included the Caterpillar stages, but I suppose that is the topic for another reference source.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE one volume field guide to North America's butterflies - and great for beginners!
According to the preface, Kaufman Guides are "the best and fastest way to get started... to send you outside quickly, putting names on what you find". That was certainly true of the "Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America". Does it work here too?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book For Easy Identification for Beginners
There is one big problem with all Kaufman Focus Guides - they don't make a broad enough line of them!If I were able to have only 1 book on a given subject (birds, butterflies, mammals, etc.) I would always choose the Kaufman Focus Guide. I find their excellent pictures far superior to the illustrations that most books use, for one thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical Peterson
Typical of all the Peterson guides. This one has all the information one normally needs. It also is arranged in sometimes frustrating sections which require one to go to several sections for a complete profile of the subject matter. I simply do not want to spend the time going back and forth in the book when I simply want basic information on one insect.

3-0 out of 5 stars great pocket guide

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guide with a few shortcomings
I finally found the original after years of searching, just about a month before this edition came out :(
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but disappointing.
The reference text is very complete and detailed. However, when I found that most of the photo plates were black and white, I groaned. What I imagined I'd be receiving was a field guide with a good photo with each entry. As it is you have to flip back and forth from text to plate.A book with photo plates is really "old school" these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Butterfly watchers!
Easy to use, with beautiful color pictures of real butterflies. Small enough to take with you butterfly watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the student
Unlike some other reviewers I have always liked the Peterson guides best and this is no exception. The emphasis of the book is not simply on sight identification (which can be difficult at best) but also on a rounded education about the world of butterflies.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected
While the author doubtless put a lot of work into this work I did not feel it came up to the standards of other Peterson handbooks.Perhaps it was the wrong book for what I wanted but I would have liked to see more on the larval and pupal forms of the butterflies than there was. Also I felt the organization of the book was a bit confusing and hard to use.

A great book to keep in your pocket so it is handy when you see an unusual caterpillar. It's nice to also see what your caterpillar will become...each picture ID includes another of the butterfly or moth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive and Useful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy Butterflies In Your Yard Or On Your Patio
I love the Stokes Nature Guides. I've owned The Butterfly Book for years. I found that when I followed the book's recommendations and put plants for both caterpillars and adult butterflies in my yard that my enjoyment of butterflies grew. I love all of the pictures of caterpillars and found the instructions for raising caterpillars helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bird lovers...become butterfly enthusiasts...
I've been enchanted with birds ever since I observed my parents whistling and mocking the mockingbirds who mocked them back. I've been a gardener forever, cursing those creepy caterpillers who devoured this and that. In the past few years I've taken a greater interest in butterflies, and lo what do I discover...the creepy caterpillers turn into the beautiful butterflies if the birds don't eat them first. I knew that of course because like lots of kids, I too brought home the cocoon found on some branch and kept it in a glass jar with holes punched in the top until it did not "hatch." Yes, I said did NOT. I never had any success with this effort so I forgot about caterpillers and cocoons--until I opened STOKES BUTTERFLY BOOK and there are those darn cocoons again.4-0 out of 5 stars Handy guide
The two things I liked best about this book are the pages devoted toidentifying butterflies by color (it groups them so that if you see onethat is predominantly orange, you can look at the page of orangebutterflies to find the one you're trying to identify), and the pagesdevoted to creating an attractive butterfly garden, with schemes showinghow to arrange plants that attract butterflies. It's not a technical book, thereby making it a good guide for backyard butterfly enthusiasts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!
Glassberg's book is a "must have" for anyone interested in butterflies, whether they are a novice or an expert themselves.Glassberg has assembled a collection of stunning photographs of butterflies commonly found in the eastern part of the country. Each photo contains enough detail, that even the rank amateur can easily identify the butterfly that just "passed by."Glassberg also gives side by side comparisons of similar looking butterflies, carefully pointing out the minute differences most may miss.He provides a calendar of when the species is most likely to be seen, areas where they tend to gather and other pertinent information. The book also gives basic background information on butterflies from their life cycle stages to host plants. The book is sized just right to toss into a napsack or car's glove compartment.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's still THE classic pocket identification guide!
When you get it right the first time, why mess with sure thing?Originally published in 1962 (I think) this classic little Golden Guide needs no updating or improvement. The illustrations are are lively and realistic, the maps are accurate, and the text is extremely well written and interesting. Not only does this old standby still serve its purpose well, it's still THE book I still reach for the most when I'm ID-ing butterflies and moths in my own backyard.I'm glad this guide wasn't doomed to "out of print" status. It deserves a place on every butterfly and moth-observer's bookshelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars fine pocket guide
This is a nice pocket-sized handbook for identifying, collecting and raising butterflies, skippers and moths. The introductory chapter describes the order Lepidoptera and details the equipment needed for capture and care of these lovely creatures, and includes a short bibliography.Subsequently, color and b&w drawings of adults, pupae and caterpillars along with distribution maps of North America help with identification, and short paragraphs give information about feeding and regional variations. This handy guide ends with a list of scientific names and an index. This would be a fine introduction for the older child or beginning adult lepidopterist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
For being just a tiny pocket guide this book is terrific! It has most of the common butterflies and moths as the title indicates but what I especially love is that it also shows the caterpillars! Its great to have these side by side so that if you find a caterpillar you can id it and see what its going to turn into.Really great reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for experienced and beginner!!
This book was recommended by a person who was experienced in butterfly identification. As a beginner, it is awesome. So for the experienced and the beginner, it is wonderful.A must buy for the curious in all of us about those beautiful butterflies God put on the face of the earth!

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Standard for the Field!
A while back I wrote a review of the Peterson Series "Field Guide to Western Butterflies", which I had used in the field during the 4th of July Butterfly Count in the Organ Mountains of New Mexico. I gave it five stars as I thought it the best field guide to actually use in the field. The rival Audubon guide to butterflies left me cold because it simply does not show enough detail for identifying hard species.I thus dismissed photo guides because of this bad experience, thinking that artists did better work in illustrating these beautiful insects.I was wrong! There is a way to produce a photo guide to butterflies that actually works and Jeffrey Glassberg has done it!This is the best field guide that I have ever seen for butterflies. The photos, mostly taken by the author, are simply superb! The best thing that Glassberg has done is to standardize the photos so you can compare the same characters. This is a major innovation and must certainly have taken a lot of time. The placing of maps and descriptions opposite the photographic plates is also a major change from the other popular guides. It sure saves a lot of page flipping!
5-0 out of 5 stars First choice
Glassberg's BTB is the benchmark and the book to buy first. You may not need another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars simply wonderful
Until I read this book I thought that onlyNabokov could write about butterflies at such a level
5-0 out of 5 stars Great - Captures collective consciousness
Every culture known to man throughout the rise and fall of civilizations, has carried a myth or symbol about the butterfly. Evidence of this includes the myth of Eros and Psyche, ancient Mycenean gold relics, wall ornaments of Teotihuacan in Mexico, the Japanese paintings, the Native American legend. This book captures the collective ethos of this powerful universal symbol well. It is well-illustrated.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Be Happily Surprised-- and Entranced
This book succeeds both as a tremendous joy for the general reader and a serious treatment of its subject. It is perhaps the best, maybe the only, book on the market right now treating its subject well and completely. Exceeding the breadth of its title, the book actually treats the cultural significance of butterflies throughout history. This is no small feat. Butterflies have been taken by many cultures to inculcate hope, rebirth, transformation and transcendence, matters at the heart of mankind's internal concern for many millennia. Despite its masterful photography and copious illustrations, Ms. Manos-Jones's production immediately belies any notion that it is simply a "coffee table book".The chapter titles well illustrate the book's topical landscape-- for example "The Sacred Butterfly", "The Artful Butterfly", "The Verbal Butterfly", [famous] "Butterfly People", and so on. By the time you've gotten through each of the ten chapters, be you butterfly buff or butterfly scholar, you will probably be surprised that, concerning this topic, you "didn't know the half of it". It is important to point out that Ms. Manos-Jones brings to this book a well-informed knowledge both of butterflies and world environmental issues. In life, she wears another hat-- as an environmentalist associated with the important Michoacan Reforestation Fund-- a premier conservation group working to protect Monarch butterfly overwintering habitats in Mexico.Given these credentials, the book is a really wedding of Ms. Manos-Jones' professional level expertise on conservation and the pure love of her subject-- butterflies. This book can be recommended wholeheartedly to the general reader and the informed butterfly enthusiast alike. I imagine that a few scholars and historians will want to dig into it as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Orgy of Nabokoviana
The prize is an unfinished short story, "The Admirable Anglewing", at an immediate stage of note-taking on index cards. It's an intriguing dead end, identifiably a two-strata Nabokov, but with a strikingly scientific directness not elsewhere seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars It Always Came Down To Butterflies
"From the age of seven, everything I felt in connection with a rectangle of framed sunlight was dominated by a single passion," wrote Valdimir Nabokov."If my first glance of the morning was for the sun, my first thought was for the butterflies it would engender."This was certainly an unusual way in which to view the world and one that not many readers, even those who adore Nabokov, have shared.5-0 out of 5 stars Nabakov's butterflies
