thorough, well-defined, fluent
I was very happy to use this text throughout my course on Hydrogeology.The verbage was succinct, the problems were applicable and well-complimented with the website for explanations, and the chapter reviews were impendious.At the end of each chapter, Fetter cocnluded with a detail of symbols; which I found to be a nice touch.Often an author uses a symbol once and expects the reader to always retain its significance, which is an unreal circumstance.The case studies were necessary to hammer home a concept!They were well-written and facilitated the goal of explaining a hydrogeological problem, and a solution.
Relieved to find.
I found this book the easiest to read, compaired to a few other groundwater textbooks out there.It concentrates on the practical applications as opposed to formula derivations.

Did anyone proof read this text before it went to print?
I have the 3rd edition which I purchased in 1995 and although I enjoy the subject matter and use this book as a reference,I am still finding errors and making corrections to the textbook (typos in both text and problem sets).Someone should have paid closer attention to detail prior to submission to the publisher.I was going to get the 4th addition to add to my personal library, hoping there would be no errors.However, after a few minutes of research on the internet I found out that there are still errors in the 4th addition.However, the author does have a webpage with corrections posted.I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone unless they have time and are willing to go through the text to make the corrections.There are other texts in print covering the same subject matter with fewer or no errors. ... Fred Pearce provides a current and thorough accounting of the travestries of water mismanagement throughout the globe.Plan A groups the grandiose and expensive plans of water engineers to impound and transfer water that have already failed or soon will fail [e.g. "water flows uphill to money"]

A scientific travelogue, engaging both in the author's personal approach and the wealth of information it contains. Highly readable; the message is both clear and alarming:we have soiled our home, have lost sight of our stewardship, and immediate action is needed.Continuing neglect, indifference, and procrastination will be irreversible.Not a shrill or alarmist messenger, the author provides practical interventions both for the individual and on a larger, political scale.The concern is that, embedded in the present, broader cacophany of blame and distraction, the book will be overlooked.Read this book.You owe it to yourself and the future to not sit on the sidelines.

Sponge of Damocles
For those concerned about the frightening state of the world's fresh water supplies, this book is a treasure of information and viewpoints on why humanity should start getting extremely worried about the issue. Fred Pearce has traveled the world to report on water supply horror stories (and a few success stories), with the theme of river health and long-term human usage. This book turns out to have a similar effect for the reader as others on the subject, which dutifully report on who in the world doesn't have enough water to drink and the potential human consequences. (Though this one probably has the most specific examples.) Pearce does give his book a bit of an edge by finding some unique insights into the social and economic problems that are leading us all down a sinkhole of disappearing water.

Professional Library "must have"
This book is a great one-stop reference for engineers and designers involved in water distribution or piping networks.The topics are covered in sufficient detail, and if more information is needed, the relevant source is usually listed (e.g. AWWA publication # xxx) so the in-depth source can be found quickly.

Save your money - buy Bergey's manual
The book begins with a decent 6 page chapter on the "Initial Stages to the Identification of a Bacterial Culture," then has a condensed version of Bergey's manual, which theoretically could allow identification to the species level, provided the information is correct and complete.I got this book yesterday, and found an error on the first thing I looked up. (in table 7.1 - Streptomyces does produce aerial hyphae.)Read more

Save your Money
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.

This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.

NOT the best book to buy.

Good, could be better
As teacher of an Environmental Engineering course (at Ariel Academic College, Israel) and as consulting engineer, I find the book useful, but... Some areas are weak: Population and demand prognosis, Resource planning, Economic evaluation and optimization, Advanced water treatment (membrane and ion exchange technologies, for example), Desalination of brackish and sea water. Each chapter has a well explained exercise, a very useful feature, but most are non metric. All in all, I know of no better textbook, and it is worth its money.
