Editorial Review

Paper or plastic? Cloth or disposable? Regular or organic? Every day, environmentally conscious consumers are faced with the overwhelming catch-22 of a capitalist society--reconciling the harm we do by consuming, while still providing ourselves and our families with the goods and services we need. It's enough to make a city dweller crazy. Fret no more! The Union of Concerned Scientists has put together a well-researched and eminently practical guide to the decisions that matter. The authors hope that the book will help you set priorities, stop worrying about insignificant things, and understand the real environmental impacts of household decisions. For instance, you may be surprised to learn that buying and eating meat and poultry is much more harmful to the environment than the packaging the meat is wrapped in, even if it's Styrofoam. This guide takes on both sides of the consumer-impact argument, goring sacred cows of the environmentalist movement (like the strident emphasis on recycling) and the industrialist perspective (like the relentless message to buy more, more, more). If you're confused and overwhelmed by all the environmental decision-making in the modern world, you'll find new inspiration in this book. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pratical Advice
This book offers a lot of scientific input of our environmental problems, but I think it also gives people a choice to whether they want to make it. I would say that this is a helpful book in gearing people to make smarter choices, but at the same time almost tells people that somethings are not a big deal. Which can be debated.Read it and enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strange omission
This was an interesting enough book, if slightly repetitive. The best part about it was telling people not to sweat the small stuff like deciding between paper and plastic bags. But what I found particularly odd was that there was absolutely no mention of cigarettes anywhere. It's strange because tobacco is a crop like fruits and vegetables and therefore effects land use, water pollution, and stuff like that. It's clearly a personal health risk (cancer), and it may contribute to air pollution since there's tar and other toxic chemicals that are released into the air when they're smoked. I can't believe it's more important to eat organic foods than to stop smoking. Why such a glaring omission??

5-0 out of 5 stars great and practical advice
i agree with all the other reviewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rethinking is the right word
Being an environmentalist isn't just about enjoying the outdoors or recycling. This is an in depth study of the complex interactions between humans and our world and an examination of our historical and cultural relationship with our environment. In particular, I found the discussion of our meaning for the word and our concept of nature to be particularly enlightening. There is simply no place in the world that isn't touched by human impact and noone on the planet who isn't touched by our environment and what we do to it. A MUST for anyone serious about the study of environmental study.

5-0 out of 5 stars the result of a year-long project in critical thinking
Cronan has done it again! This volume of essays critically examines the concept of wilderness, nature, and humanity's role in the modern world.Though the individual essays are somewhat uneven, the main theme of thebook is clearly communicated, especially in Cronan's introductory piece. That is, that the concept of wilderness needs careful rethinking, particularly with our world nearing 10 billion persons. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep this in your pack.
This book is the best starting place for those wishing to learn about wilderness survival. The book is well organized and a pleasure to read. The subject matter can be dry, but Mr. Brown does a good job of interlacing his personal experiences with the instructional material. There are two reasons I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. 1)I think it could use more diagrams and pictures.Without an instructor by your side it would be easy to misunderstand some of the more technical skills covered.2) This book is mainly for temperate regions. While much of the material is useful for any climate, it is missing tropical and artic specific information. Mr. Brown's knowledge of survival and tracking techniques is second to none. His field guides should be on every outdoor enthusiast's book shelf, and this book should be in your pack with you at all times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Credit well deserved in this "have it all" guide.
I must give credit where deserved and Tom Brown, Jr. certainly deserves it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some good nuggets, largely impractical
In my experience, wilderness survival books come in at least two distinct flavors: from-scratch survival (like this book) and practical outdoors education.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you think
This book is an incredible read. I highly recommend it for anyone who is concerned about the environment and their own health. This book contains a lot of research, which contributes to its credibility, however it is far from your typical scientific book. It's a fascinating read for anyone, whether they have a background in biology or environmental science or not. I actually read it as part of an extra credit assignment for one of my college classes. My original intention was to skim the book and write a summary. I became so wrapped up in the book that I literally read it cover to cover - including the forward and the afterward. I later purchased my own copy. This book is both challenging and fascinating. Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars eye opening reality
A great, easy to read arguement that we are creating our own demise to profit in the short term. Theo has had a daunting task and put together the pieces of scientific evidence into a timely work of art that questions the side effects of our daily practices.I'd love a sequeal for personal and corporate change that would, of course, only slow the possible outcomes of our daily lives and of thosewonderous creatures which have no choice inhabiting and inheriting the tainted sphere with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars An alert for us to heed now and to prevent further damage ..

5-0 out of 5 stars Beston is without a doubt the best!
I wouldn't dream of heading for the Cape without this book--Henry Beston captures the Cape more beautifully than any other author.THE OUTERMOST HOUSE is one of those enchanting books which improves with each rereading.

Since Amazon hasn't provide a link between Outermost House, by Beston, and The Winter Beach, by Charlton Ogburn (ISBN 068809418X), I would like to suggest here that, if you like Outermost House, you will almost certainly enjoy The Winter Beach, as well. From the jacket description: "A naturalist and man of rare wisdom shares with you his journeys along the Atlantic shore."

3-0 out of 5 stars Bird-watching the Soul
There's an H.G. Wells story (in Bloom's anthology for children) called "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes"; the title character is struck by lightning and undergoes a visual hallucination in which he believes he sees a desolate island, or as he puts it, "Dark sea and sunrise! And yet I'm sitting on a sofa in old Boyce's room!...God help me!"I didn't think much of the story at the time I read it, but now, on reading "The Outermost House," I find it a remarkably excellent and relevant critique of American nature writing.Surrounded by friends and family, Davidson's gaze is turned inward-or rather projected far outward-to a pristine setting that becomes a horror to the reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book!
I first met the book in the uni library. Having been teaching natural resources and environmental economics, I find this intermediate textbook with is useful and worthy of recommendating for those postgraduates whohave strong interests in theoretical exploration. Since almost alltextbooks in the market are elementary and are not suitable for theadvanced readers, this book with new approaches has been increasingly usedin the uni. However, this book does not pay enough attention toenvironmental policy. This should be considered by the authors when thethird edition is composed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More Republican atrocities
As if there were any doubts about the atrocities perpetrated by the Republican government, here's an account of what they're doing to science: to stem cell research, to the environment, to endargened species, to the teaching of evolution, etc., while deriding people who live "in what we call the reality-based community," which consists of those who "believe that solutions emerge from judicious study of discernible reality." (I'm not joking.)Read it and be prepared to take a bath with Clorox and a steel brush when you are done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well researched & documented
A very thorough and well-written book.Certainly a must-read for anyone interested in science, public policy, political tactics, current events, or any combination of the above.

5-0 out of 5 stars Republicans' Orwellian "sound science" no science at all in their upside down world
Chris Mooney's passionate, thoroughly researched book concludes: the Bush administration ignores or denies mainstream research to please its conservative base. Business groups and certain religious lobbies helped while Bush-era treatment of scientists did a 180-degree reversal from that of Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Reagan. The Republican Congress passed laws - endorsed by the Bush White House -- designed to disable clean air and water efforts, and has dismantled safeguards, such as the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, originally intended to give legislators unbiased advice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as The Party's Over...
While Heinberg summarizes the lit. on oil depletion and fuel shortages, this book branches into imagined political outcomes--basically, the demise of liberal culture, the individual, and our civilization.(Examples: no oil, little fuel, population decline to 3.8 billion humans, etc.)He offers "rational" alternative end-games and scenarios, but his thinking predicates that human beings and societies are and can be "rational."If you accept that, then, OK, this analysis is for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heinberg Reports, You Decide
Heinberg writes as friend who has the regrettable task of informing us our way of life is over.He gives a concise, readable account of why change is coming. In short, the age of cheap oil is soon to end and viable substitutes (if they are to appear at all) are decades away.We are now at the point, or we will soon be at the point, where supply cannot keep up with demand.Demand is rising (thanks in part to the industrialization of China and India) and supply is at its peak. This new reality will have disastrous consequences for our economic, political and social institutions."It literally changes everything."
4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Long Emergency
Very concise review of alternative energy options, and why repair, re-use, maintain will become very important as we learn to live with energy resource limitations. Its not as alarmist as the Long Emergency (James Howard Kunstler), but puts the onus on policy makers to make hard choices now, or be faced with some unwinnable strategies,e.g. "Last One Standing" which appears to be the policy of the Bush administration, perhaps unconsciously.I enjoyed it.Very well written, well researched, and easy to understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information! An Easy & Fun Read!
Ryan and Durnings book contains excellent information about products we use everyday, and how our choices matter. After reading the first section tracing the history of coffee, I was prompted to go to my health food store and purchase "shade coffee" (organic or cooperatively produced).
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious but fun read
This is one fun and informative book and one I am buying for young as well as older friends. I sit here typing on a computer keyboard and because of the book I see things I never really stopped to see before. And with this comes questions and answers about how many people and natural resources does it take to make all the elements of this modern marvel. Not just the keyboard, monitor and speakers, but the people behind Amazon.com who are consuming coffee, flushing toilets, using lights and machines to process my order.
3-0 out of 5 stars Limited as an Environmental Guidebook, but Informative.
In "Stuff", Ryan provides a comprehensive description of the materials and processes used to produce, use, and dispose of a variety of everyday consumer products (automobile, hamburger, coffee, newspaper, etc.).He presents precise statistics on the quantity of raw and recycled materials, energy, and pollution caused by this production and consumption of each product."Stuff" is concise and thoroughly researched.
