5-0 out of 5 stars The Tracker
It is important to know that even though this book may seem fictional, in truth, Tom Brown's account of his early childhood, The Tracker, is a non-fiction narrative. There are many details of the book to make one think it is fiction, but it should be remembered that our narrator was only a child and a young man during the events of this narrative. Tom Brown did an excellent job portraying the way a child should feel and act in the given situations, even though they had happened years before. It is easy to tell that Stalking Wolf and his teachings were extremely important to Brown as he grew up. He spent every day he could outside and everyday there was something to be learned from nature.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nature lover
A must read for anyone that believes in the sacredness of nature and life. Tom Brown is truly one-of-a-kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its worth every cent and then some.
This is a marvellous book. Although the cover and back-cover illustration and summary are sensationalised the book itself is not. It is the spiritual insight gained by Tom Brown as he learns both from his Apache teacher/mentor/guide and the world itself that stands out in this book. His period of four years as a kind of apprentice of the old man and the deep friendship with Rick, the old man's grandson, are the cornerstones of a great story. It resounds, to some degree, with the adventures of Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn although his was a clearer instruction to the spirit that moves in everything. There is no question that the teacher's continuing appearance of looking at the spirit itself acting in the world is true. This can be seen by anyone paying enough attention for long enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening
Get your dictionary out for acronyms... very confusing at times.Great storytelling in the first half of the book, but much finger pointing at the end.Van Heerden is very passionate about his work and point of view.Story matches reality I guess in relation to this catastrophic, horrible event.Very eye-opening, as our government continues down the same road, levee's ...FEMA... wars..... cover-up after cover-up.... Etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sad Truth
As a former emergency management planner, I found this book to be an excellent analysis of what really went wrong in New Orleans. It is a treatise for government officials to learn what not to do and an outline of what we as citizens should demand from our government leaders. It presents very technical information and scientific analysis in a manner that even an elected official can understand. But, beyond presenting the scientific basis of why New Orleans flooded, it presents an outline of solutions that should and must be considered. It is an great testament to the fact that some issues should be above everyday politics and that some important decisions that a government may be asked to make should be based upon science and not political considerations. This is a must read for every citizen and should be a mandatory read for every elected official.
5-0 out of 5 stars Follow this recipe, Dammit!
Katrina was the "medium one", not the "big one". For those who are not on the gulf coast, it wiped out an area about 5 miles deep by 100 miles wide. The damage was mostly to middle class suburbs, but also include alot of very wealthy beach front neighborhoods, working neighborhoods, and a poorer neighborhood (the Lower 9). I personally owned 2 houses whose slabs were 10 feet above sea level, and were 10 miles from the "normal" coast, that took 9 feet of water from the surge. There are "below sea level" areas, but Katrina's surge wiped out high ground too.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is power in Mexico, lots of it, and lots of sun too.
It is amazing that some people can create confusion about a country. There is power in Mexico, you can visit the webpage of the power company in Mexico if you want at: www.cfe.gob.mxMexico even exports electricity to other countries.I am sure there are small towns or areas where there is no electricity, and solar power would be of great use, but that is not a general issue.Thank you for your understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic on Evolution - I Miss Sagan

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution of Human Intelligence
Well presented expose of the "developed" human mind, the centers of our intelligemce ruled by the reptilian brain. Well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living fossils
The topic of evolution is one of the more controversial subjects in science, even ignoring creationism, intelligent design and other religious-leaning dogmas. The branches of the tree of life, especially that branch where humans appear, are still in dispute. In this book, Dr. Sagan takes the reader along this tree from its very root and slowly upwards to humans.By taking this path, he can show how various characteristics that evolved aeons ago are still with us; that in some sense we and every other creature are living fossils.Along the way, he takes the occasional tangent onto other branches, and shows us what was, and what might have been if certain branches had continued.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to foment sustainable revolution
In the 1980s, Lahti's hometown of Overtornea, Sweden was dying. The worldwide recession left the village in an inhospitable climate with no major industry and a declining population. Lahti organized community residents and developed a plan to revitalize Overtornea using principles of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Thus was born the sustainability revolution in Sweden that is taking hold in Europe and spreading to other parts of the world. This is not a story, but a how-to manual. The king of Sweden has endorsed Lahti's methods and seen a resurgence of vital business throughout the country while reducing waste and fossil fuel consumption. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Professional Library "must have"
This book is a great one-stop reference for engineers and designers involved in water distribution or piping networks. The topics are covered in sufficient detail, and if more information is needed, the relevant source is usually listed (e.g. AWWA publication # xxx) so the in-depth source can be found quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended pick for college-level collections strong in cultural history and philosophy
ENDGAME V 1: THE PROGRAM OF CIVILIZATION is a recommended pick for college-level collections strong in cultural history and philosophy: here author Jensen meditates on the state of world species - including humans - and provides a blend of philosophy, psychological analysis, and insights into Western culture. One of the premises is 'the culture as a whole and most of its members are insane': chapters cover conflicting needs and values of the human and natural world and reflect on the 'endgame' humans are playing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing but spot on perspective.
Great author, I would recommend all of his books. This book was quite an experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't turn your back on this...
An extremely important book. Whether or not you want to admit it, these things are going on. Jensen writes with real human emotion, without adding any unneccessary frills.

I agree with all of the earlier reviews of this book - it is a must-read!My family had the privilege of visiting Kruger Park last November.Ms. Kruger does a wonderful job of capturing what it feels like to be there.I highly encourage anyone who can to make the trip - South Africa is a beautiful country that shouldn't be missed.

The question is - where do you go from here? After this book you have to take a break before launching yourself into any other read just because there's so much verve and life to this book, it lingers in you for days. You laugh with it and you cry with it. Extraordinary book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Reference Book
This book's finest and most invaluable quality is that not only does it explain the many hazards modern living has bestowed but it also gives you a way out.At the end of every chapter are website addresses, names and contact information for companies that fill the need for whatever it is you're used to living with (household cleaners, make-up, baby products, energy) but minus the unwanted chemicals or environmental side effects. It provides a solution, not just the problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is amazing. My professor suggested this book and it has changed my life. I only shop organic. I have learned that when you shop at farmer's markets you save a ton of money. I go to Trader Joe's for everything else. I am currently making my home more eco-friendly. This book even changed the way I allocate my money for my retirement. This book is awesome!!!
