5-0 out of 5 stars The book all aquatic chemists should keep on reading
Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No
This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems
This book is an excellent reference. It presents a thorough discussion ofa complex topic. The authors provide many worked examples, with allrequired numeric inputs and resutls, that permit the reader to quicklyverify his or her understanding of the material. The consistent and properuse of units throughout the book is refreshing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and refreshing approach
This book is a very solid, creative and refreshing proposal for new ways to look at Global problems. He modestly proposes real solutions and processes. These ideas seem equally applicable at the regional and local level where institutional change can be slow but problems need a response without years of debates and institutional resistance.

4-0 out of 5 stars What has our world come to?
This book shows, proves and explains 20 of the major problems our world is faced with, which will become fatal/too serious after twenty years. Rischard has divided the book into three sections: the reasons, the problems, and the solutions. He gives examples of what we could do or what needs to be done, and why this is importants/what would come from it if we do not act. It is not a book for people who dont care at all, but is a good read for those who have enough motivation to help. Worth the money, although its not about the money, but the meaning is important: it's not just 'a good read'.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 for the Book, 3 for the Shipping
Like the other reviewer, my book was improperly shipped, this time in a box too large so it sloshed around on its journey, getting dinged in the process.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, inadequately packed
This is a magnificent book, with unique photgographs of sea creatures on white backgrounds. It would have made a splendid gift, except for the unfortunate fact that it was shipped in a box hardly bigger than itself and had obviously been dropped and crushed. Every page was dented, but it was too late to return it and get a new copy. One wonders why tiny objects are so often shipped in a box many times larger than themselves, but books like this one are tossed casually into the mail with no real protection at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another exceptional collection of images and information
Such beautiful work is a treasure and an education all at once. It's a rare treat to be able to see in such intimate detail those creatures who have lived and may perish without our ever having known them except for the work done here. This book, and the entire body of the Liittschwager/Middleton collaboration is a must-have for every conservationist, every school. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This did the trick
I got a 55 on the exam. However, I received the book 3 days before the test. I crammed and got through it. However, there were lots of questions on the test not covered in the book. The book itself was just a bunch of tests, not tangible study material. In summary, it was a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great preparation for the Environment & Humanity Exam!
I used this book along with a library book on environmental science to score a 58 on the exam (enough to give me credit with an A!).In many cases, the example questions were much harder than the actual exam qestions.I spent quite a bit of time reviewing the practice questions in this book, and the glossary of environmental terms came in very handy when I would come across a question that I wasn't familiar with. This book can not be your only study resource if you know very little about the topic. However, when used in conjuction with a well-written book on environmental science and current issues, it helps you to find your weakest areas and improve upon them.It also helped me to get a feel for the layout of the exam and gave good basic information about all the DANTES exams offered, including contact information for the Chauncey Group, the organization that oversees the program.Read more

Editorial Review

"Climate change is the ignored player on the historical stage," writes archeologist Brian Fagan. But it shouldn't be, not if we know what's good for us. We can't judge what future climate change will mean unless we know something about its effects in the past: "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." And Fagan's story of the last thousand years, centered on the "Little Ice Age," reminds us of what we could end up repeating: flood, fire, and famine--acts of God exacerbated by acts of man.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just talk about the weather
The effect of climate on history is undoubtedly profound, but beyond the last century most of what we know about climate comes from indirect estimates gleamed by measuring tree rings, ice cores and other rare artifacts that trace changes in temperature or moisture. In "The Little Ice Age" these clues are combined with historical records to build an insightful history of European peoples.
4-0 out of 5 stars The havoc caused by climate change
This book describes how climate changes over the past millennium affected humans in Europe and nearby. This time period can be divided into the medieval warm period, the little ice age (roughly from 1300-1850), and the period of global warming. And, wow, will you hear of some really bad weather: summers when the rain almost never stops, sand dunes that move so fast people can barely escape, and glaciers you can see advancing daily.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Changes like the Weather.
Nothing changes like the weather. But sometimes the weather can change a lot -- like the summer of 1300, when the world's temperature suddenly dipped.Norse settlements were wiped out and plague destroyed half the population of Europe. The Thames river froze over in winter, and Hans Brinker could skate the length of Holland. When the "little ice age" ended five hundred years later, the result was another environmental catastrophe that caused the Irish Potato Famine, and millions of deaths. At a time when we are looking for predictions of what future environmental catastrophe might be like, maybe we should be paying more attention to historians. Is our "just in time" civilization robust enough to deal with the surprises of global warming?Fagan delivers modern science and historical details in a delightful package that will give you new respect for mother nature -- and more than a twinge of apprehension about what might lie just over next summer's horizon.-- Auralgo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If There Is One Book You'll Ever Need, This Is It!
I own several environmental engineer textbooks, many of which focuses on either environmental planning, engineering systems, case histories & legislations, water treatment, energy, or current trends. Few books like this 1400+ page monster of a handbook focuses on all aspects of this important field. In its preface it explains why having all aspects in one bounded body is vital to the engineer student; simply the field of environemental engineering utilizes knowledge and information from other-scientific, legal, and social-science fields to solve many problems that are encountered daily whiles working to create better systems, laws and solutions. This book has everything that you will need to know to work in the field. It promotes tried and true theories used by scientists before as well as sets up the beginner students with the challenges of creating new theories and working ideas to solve current and projected problems that face us today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is amazing. I'm new to green building and reading this book gave me so much information on so many different things. I want to find other books like this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A+ Informative jumping off point for people interested in environmental and social responsibility.
I didn't read it cover to cover but it was not the type of book to be read like that. All in all I'd say it does a good job covering what is a pretty broad topic; there are so many "green" strategies out there and it is hard to discuss them all.I thought it did a good job on the three or so different main categories and it connected them back to the common denominator.Save, protect, and preserve natural resources. It covers site and land usage, energy and water conservation, and interior and exterior material usage. The author took the difficult path of trying to sell `green' building as potentially cost effective, whereas in reality I think it is important to realize that capital costs will definitely be higher and it is hard to predict/confirm short term viable pay-backs.Once you put a value on your conscience and the long term big picture it makes obvious sense, reasonable pay-backs are definitely attainable but they come from diligent work and coordinated evaluation and integration.
5-0 out of 5 stars A WEALTH OF INSPIRATION AND INFORMATION
IT'S GREAT TO HAVE A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON GREEN BUILDING

5-0 out of 5 stars good wetland text
Overall, this is a very good text on wetlands (for students and professionals both). However, I personally feel that a entire chapter could be devoted to wetland soils and wish that this book gave a better presentation of wetland soils.Furthermore, a great deal of research has been performed in Boreal wetlands and Boreal Prairie wetlands of Canada yet the Canadian literature is somewhat lacking in this text. Its still the best option out there for professors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applauded by this Environmental Engineer PE!
There is no better book for learning about wetlands that I have found. Many students find hydrology difficult, but this book lays this critical process out clearly, with excellent illustrations and diagrams.

Great book, very concise.Step by step way of calculating GW problems.Must have for GW and environmental Engineers

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil
The concepts covered in this text are fairly well explained.Chapter 2 focuses on characterization and remedial investigation. This section can be useful for those who do UST investigations and soil removal. Here the author runs through the steps used to determine mass and volume of soil excavated from a tank pit and mass and concentration of excavated soil. There are also many useful subsections describing the procedure for determining mass and mole fractions of gasoline components, contamination in the vadose zone, etc..The author also presents calculations for determining well volume for groundwater sampling.Chapter three covers plume migration in groundwater and soil and the author covers such topics as transmissivity, specific yield and storativity. These topics are not covered in great detail.Aquifer tests are covered and some simple examples are used demonstrating the Theis Method, Cooper-Jacob Straight Line method and Distance-Drawdown method. Not a lot of detail in these sections.Remaining chapters cover mass balance, vadose zone and soil remediation, groundwater remediation and VOC air treatment.Overall a good reference text with a great deal of applicable information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for environmental professionals!
Extremely concise reference that has taken the place of over twenty books on my shelf at work!I only worry I may wear out the spine before my second copy arrives! ... Read more
